Desert ranger vs. Vault dweller with cigarette infomercials burnt into his head
10 notes · View notes
Link
I forgot how I formatted these so I’m not bothering to keep it consistent rn.
Rating: Teen
Pairing: None
Characters: Dogmeat, Ian, Tycho, The Vault Dweller, and I guess a collection of OC’s
Summary: It wasn’t a big dog. In fact, quite the opposite, it was pretty damn small. It’s wiry brownish fur was falling out in patches, it’s skin scratched up and scarred. If Jesse had seen it out in the wasteland, he wouldn’t have been afraid. He might even feel pity for it.
But its muzzle was covered in blood, his friend’s blood.

“We Rangers hail from back east, what used to be called Nevada. Our heritage stretches back to the days of the Texas Rangers. We learn survival and combat skills in order to go out into the world and have a chance of surviving and making things better.”
- Tycho, Fallout
Tycho reappears in the New California expansion of Fallout: The Board Game, donning Desert Ranger Armor. You can read about Tycho here:

Fallout OC - Elrand Brandt (The Vault Dweller)
Tumblr media
Read under the cut for more info:
Here's my Vault Dweller of the first Fallout game, Elrand Brandt. Born in Vault 13 and taking an occupation as engineer at age 21, Elrand gets the short end of the stick when "volunteer" is chosen to find a replacement for the water chip.
Sent out into the wasteland of what was once Southern California, with nothing more than his jumpsuit, a barely functioning pistol, and a multi-tool, Elrand goes off to retrieve the replacement water chip without getting killed by the critters that lurk around and the Super Mutant threat that popped up.
Elrand is healthy averagely strong and attractive man at a height of 5ft and 10inch, buzz-cut dark hair and hazel eyes, good with his hands (he's an engineer after all), however he doesn't stray far from his Vault jumpsuit (besides reinforcing it with armor) and being out in the wasteland doesn't help his hygiene, though he does try to keep up with it when he has the time.
An engineer with exceptional skills in tech savvy situations, literacy and stealth (enough to know how to blend in with the background), Elrand's senses are good enough at picking up differences in environment, and is quite persuasive when he knows how to use his words, with decent survival skills as he know how to cook a good-enough meal to keep him going and has decent creativity in his plans. However, his combat ability is lacking despite his decent strength, though he's better with aiming small guns than larger ones. Elrand's communication could be better and his rudeness doesn't make him a very good mediator. His rizz ability sucks ass despite the potential he has, his luck just gets shittier and he can barely use the environment to get himself out of, say, a public gunfight. Elrand's growing to be a dog person and Dogmeat's pretty much the only animal he can handle. He does not like nor want kids (and yet Luck and Irony work together to move around this obstacle).
Elrand is quite the knowledgeable man, though his anxiety almost reaches the roof when dealing with big, mean, green machines known as super mutants. This does not stop his passion to save his vault and help whoever he can (even when he's reluctant to be the person who has to do either). With the bullshit he's seen and the bad luck that follows him, Elrand finds comfort in believing there's a destiny people follow. His confidence and patience are pretty decent but it depends on the situation he's in. His humor often times falls flat dead just like his happiness, but unlike the latter, he tries to improve the former.
Elrand is often rude (though can keep his temper in check when he infiltrates the Children of the Cathedral), but his bravery and ability to remain collected under certain stress cannot be argued with. Elrand's methods sometimes must involve violence in order to reach a greater solution even if he's not particularly comfortable with it, though he doesn't share the pacifistic beliefs, even when he's thoughtful enough to use non-violent methods, he thinks there are some moments that require a more permanent end (especially with the Master and his Super Mutant army). He can be agreeable or contrary towards what other's say depending on what they're trying to sell. He's more pragmatic than idealistic, and is very frugal on his cap use (unless it comes to those in need). While he's certainly not objecting to doing extrovert activities, he leans towards introvert. He's quite collected, though impulsive I would label him as "wild". Elrand is quite the stubborn perfectionist, and usually sticks with the decision he makes.
His Charisma sucks ass, his empathy's a little better but it only extends so far, and though deeply generous towards others, this often causes him to give more to them and keep less for himself. Elrand has a good steady check on both his aggression and libido. Elrand is surprisingly more deceptive than he is honest, and has the potential to take initiative but overall prefers to do what other's ask of him (plus his whole mission is to find a replacement water chip for Vault 13). He comes off a bit rude due to his inexperience with social cues in the Wasteland, and is rather indifferent towards the political fronts, only going off a black-and-white view. At first sight he is scary, and can take advantage when he wants to, but he is quite a cool dude once you get to know him, despite how obedient and gullible he is in the Wasteland (which changes throughout the events of Fallout).
Due to the shit Luck he has and his valiant fight against the Master and his Super Mutant army (+ being banished from Vault 13), he eventually comes to the belief that destiny and fate may exist, and with what he's seen out in Southern California, magic too.
Elrand's top priority is the survival of his home, Vault 13, with earning praise for proving himself coming second. He does try to prioritize his health and the safety of his companions (Ian, Tycho and Katja), though he's more lenient to not letting ideals of justice, truth and others opinions get to him too badly, with love, fame and wealth being the least of his worries.
And to conclude on good old Fallout traditions, here are his SPECIAL Stats:
Strength (6), Perception (8), Endurance (6), Charisma (3), Intelligence (9), Agility (8) and Luck (2).
Tag skills he has:
Speech, Repair & Small Guns.
And lastly, his Perks:
Mental Block, Strong Back and Awareness.

Fallout Opinion Survey- Results!
Thank you so much to all those who took part! We had 421 usable responses in total :D
One quick note- the nature of the data this time around means that most of the auto-generated charts are usable as they are, which does mean this post will be very image-heavy. I’d be very appreciative if someone who knows how to write image descriptions for charts could add them on!

The Lore:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(other titles specifically mentioned in the final question: Metro and Doom)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Characters headcanoned as synths: The Sole Survivor (by far the most common theory), Sturges, Deacon, Preston Garvey, the Lone Wanderer in Broken Steel, James/Dad, Dogmeat, Three Dog, Parker Quinn, Charon, Courier Six, Tinker Tom, Zeke, Arthur Maxson, Father/older Shaun, Piper, Travis Miles, Mysterious Stranger, Caesar ('cause funny'), Joshua Graham, most Children of Atom, Desdemona, Myrna, Marcy Long, Mr Burke, Vault 76 Overseer, Trashcan Carla, Cricket, many BoS and Enclave members, Reaver Movement members, Redeye, Moira Brown, Dr Zimmer, Ranger Ghost, most birds, Arcade Gannon, Elijah, Lizzie Wyatt, Kellogg, Mama Murphy, Nat Wright, and Sierra Petrovita
(please note I'm not all that familiar with Fallout 4 lore, if any of the FO4 peeps here are canon synths then I didn't know about it lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fan theories/headcanons from the final question that cropped up repeatedly (in approximate order of popularity):
Vault-Tec started the Great War
Alien involvement with the pre-war US government and/or the Great War
Horses are still around
Talking Deathclaws are still around
Occult/eldritch influence (e.g. the Dunwich building) is widespread
Charon is a survivor of Vault 92
Deacon is a founder of the Railroad and his 'real' backstory was another lie
Veronica and Christine reunite
Sarah Lyons is alive
Gen 3 synths and ghouls still need to eat, drink, sleep and so on
Ghouls only turn feral in specific circumstances (suggestions include prolonged isolation and relying too heavily on radiation instead of food as a source of energy) and it is not inevitable
International travel and immigration continues
Danse and Harkness were sent to the Capital Wasteland by the Railroad together
X person is actually multiple people- suggested for Deacon, Legate Lanius and Vulpes Inculta
The US is the either the only place that was nuked or the only place that hasn't rebuilt and recovered, and the rest of the world is just ignoring them and carrying on as normal
Cass is the Chosen One's daughter
Mama Murphy is the Chosen One
No-Bark Noonan is the Chosen One (lots of Chosen One theories popping up lol)
All subsequent Dogmeats in the series are named after the legend of the original Dogmeat
Father is not really Shaun
MacCready is lying about Duncan being ill (or one person even suggested Duncan existing)
Yes Man overthrows the Courier after being upgraded
The real Lone Wanderer died at the end of the vanilla game even if Broken Steel is installed, and the Broken Steel LW is a synth
Deacon once worked for the Institute
Deacon deliberately leads people to theorise that he is the Lone Wanderer to throw them off
Deacon is or was once a ghoul (also plenty of Deacon theories)
The Mysterious Stranger is a time traveller who protects the various PCs to maintain the timeline
Appalachia was turned into a barren wasteland by the nuclear trigger-happiness of the Vault 76 Dwellers (possibly interesting aside: my brother, who buys into this one, has gone as far as to theorise that the original Great War used very low-yield weapons and wasn't that severe on the environmental level (as far as literal nuclear war goes, that is), and it was the Vault 76ers nuking the hell out of Appalachia that triggered a continent-wide nuclear winter and sent the ecology of the wasteland into the state it's in in all subsequent games)
Glory is not a synth
The (in-game) reason for lore clashes and retcons is that the plot of each game is a retelling  of the story as it's passed around in the wasteland, so some details have been embellished or mixed up
I’ll be coming back to the theories from the final question at some point, but aside from that, that's a wrap! There isn't really much potential for me to play around with the data here like with the OC surveys, so this was more just me presenting the data as it came in without commentary. Still, I hope this is somehow interesting/insightful!

things that are v13
time travel, parallel universes, portals, and quantum mechanics (e.g. pylon v-13)
deliberate allusions between fallout games that make no diegetic sense (fo3 quoting fo1, fo2/4 dogmeat in general, 76 call-forwards)
allusions to cut or cancelled content (e.g. ulysses invoking the twin mothers as a dead tribe. ulysses in general)
anything meant to be cut that lingered in the margins of the game experience (e.g. calder revenge monologue)
anything that appears to be implemented but left deliberately inaccessible (tanagra terminal, dev items, centurion ron, possibly the atom scripture)
anything not intended to be cut, but glitched out of the final product, and left quasi-canon (e.g. vault 81 GOAT scene, gay ncr soldier letter)
gentle diegetic connections to other scifi especially wasteland and canticle (tycho, camarillo, seymour, tardis) incl those found in other properties (e.g. wasteland, outer worlds)
any in-game character contested by fans as non-canon (stranger, two-bears, the cafe)
game endings that may or may not have happened
outright contradictions
vault 13 relics, talking deathclaws, bishop bloodline, courier six
angels

ok ok so . in my canon lore for elvis his companions don’t die one by one through the events of fallout 1.
tycho and katja die later on through different circumstances, wether old age or something else in the wasteland.
ian and dogmeat are a different situation though. ian died during the events of the game right in front of elvis, similar to how he died in canon ( being fucking flamed to death in necropolis ) but under different circumstances i’ve yet to decide.
dogmeat lived the longest, but he did die to a the few wandering super mutant patrols after the events of the game as well. being a senior dog at this point, dogmeat was not meant to be involved in the fight, but in the end dogmeat probably tried to save elvis from an attack, attacked the super mutant himself, and that sealed his fate.
elvis misses that dog, and he wears his collar around his wrist like a bracelet. he misses all of his friends a lot. he’s kinda lonely in the present, doesn’t really make friends bc he’ll just watch them die over and over again.

The flicker I've posted about is Tycho, by the way. The companion from Fallout 1. Might be the only guy from Fallout 1 on here.
