Not sure if you’ve done something similar before, but how do you think their dynamic would be different if they’d been twins? What about in your Hal-verse?

I think their dynamic would be WILDLY different if they were twins, because even if they still retain the essential character traits of loyal/rebellious, even if they still retain their celestial roles as Michael's vessel and Lucifer's, even if Dean still stays home with Dad and Sam runs away -- the starting premise of their relationship in canon is that Sam's put into Dean's arms to run out of that burning house, and how can that be so if they're twins?

It seriously rocks the dynamic. Even if you go with Dean being ten minutes older or whatever and so you still get to go with goofy "I'm older!" // "Barely!" jokes -- Dean looking out for Sam and being John's helpmeet during childhood is a really essential part of their characters, both in how Dean loves and resents the role and in how Sam strains against the restriction while relying on it for comfort/reassurance. If they're the same age -- what happens? Dean might still be the one who really engages in training and hunting and Sam might still push away from it and want to get away, but John's going to use both of them on hunts if they're the right age, or be forced to leave both of them home. They might be closer, in some ways, but on the other hand we lose that unequal footing that I'm actually realizing is one of my favorite elements of their relationship even as I write this ask -- it's essential to me that Dean has parts of his life that Sam doesn't see at all, and of course vice versa, and it's so so so important that they have a venn diagram instead of a full overlap. Like that's what creates their relationship. It's why ageswaps (where Sam's older, always written honestly so that Sam topping is more 'obvious' [when it was always obvious, c'mon]) never really work for me -- Dean is Sam's older sibling and it just. Informs everything.

That said, let's just... magically plop them into a scenario where they're twins and pretend that their personalities would be legible in that case, and of course of course they'd be super close and they'd surely fucknasty and of course in a halmanverse Sam would be there for Dean's first heat and it wouldn't even be a question, he'd roll over and slide his fingers in and press his face against Dean's face from behind and ask if that felt good, does that help?, and Dean'd get his first abortion real, real early. Whoops. But in the same way that I'm writing a Deanna/Sam fic where the boundaries are basically nonexistent, the twincest (halman or otherwise) boundaries haven't even been heard of.

Also, while I generally trash people suspecting physical wincest because pretty much no one would assume two ostensibly straight brothers are fucking -- in the twinverse I think that'd be more likely, and in the halman-twinverse it'd be REALLY likely, to the point that Sam might more often introduce Dean as his wife and Dean would elbow him at first but honestly, it sounds -- it feels...

So. Unsatisfying answer? :D
