“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay?” Jihyo was pressing her elbow into the center console as she spoke out of the passenger window. She squinted her eyes at Anna when the girl didn’t respond, waiting for an answer from her, “I’ll sit at another table and if he tries anything I’ll jump him. I’m serious.”

Anna was quick to shake her head, pulling the strap of her purse up higher on her shoulder, “Nono please don’t do that. I’ll be okay, we’re just meeting this time so I can properly apologize.” Her eyes seemed to drift away as she rushed out the words, Jihyo’s curious eyes seeming like they were burning a hole into her. The incident backstage played on a continuous, haunting loop in her head, like a bug that won’t leave you alone, and she hasn’t stopped feeling bad ever since.

“Hey, call me when you’re done and I’ll come get you,” Jihyo pouted in defeat, making sure she had Anna’s attention before putting the car in drive and smiling at her, waving out the window as she pulled away.

Anna swallowed thickly as she watched the car drive down the street, tucking a fallen lock of hair back behind her ear. Part of her wished she said yes for Jihyo to stay. At least it would’ve killed a little of the awkwardness that was for sure going to happen. But she was a big girl and could do this herself. She took a deep breath in as she turned on her heels, pulling the door to the small café open.

A faint blush dusted her cheeks when she did a quick scan of the room, eyes falling directly onto the man she had come to see. He was sitting in the back corner of the room, elbow pressed firmly on the table as he scrolled through his phone. She nibbled on the inside of her cheek as she held onto the strap of her purse and let her feet guide her over to his table.

“Oh, Youngmi!” Joshua snapped his eyes over to her as she approached the table, shutting his phone off and standing up from the chair to greet her properly.

“Hi there,” She smiled at him and internally cringed at the awkward wave of her hand, “I hope I’m not late. I-I got a little lost along the way and I just-.”

“Huh? Lost?”

She pinched her eyebrows together in confusion as she swallowed down the lump quickly building in the back of her throat again, shuffling her feet from side to side.

“I-uh was meeting Hoshi here but I don’t know where he is. He was supposed to be here by now,” Joshua rubbed at the back of his neck as the tips of his ears pricked with redness.

“You’re meeting Hoshi here? He texted me and said yesterday that you had wanted to meet me here today?”

She was just as confused as he was. She pulled out her phone and brought up the text message sent to her last night to confirm for herself that she wasn’t going crazy before turning her phone towards Joshua.

His eyes scanned over the messages between the two, his lips forming a frown as he tapped on his own phone to see the illuminated twelve o’clock displayed across his lockscreen.

“That little-,” He let out a sigh, closing his eyes briefly before his face softened and grinned at her, “I’m assuming this is our lunch meeting.”

“I guess it is,” The awkwardness seemed to fizzle out as she smiled and nodded her head, tucking her phone away and loosening the grip she had on her bag strap. She reached her hand out to pull out the back of the chair but was stopped almost instantly by a much larger hand grazing hers.

“Wait, let me get that for you,” He was quick to move around the table, gripping the metal rung and scooting the chair backwards. Anna’s cheeks redden at his actions, thanking him quickly before shouldering off her purse and sitting down into the chair, hanging her purse off of the empty seat beside her.

“This place is actually really nice.” She looked around the café with bright eyes. It was a little on the rustic side, shades of brown complimented each other with random pops of greenery scattered around accenting everything together, “I’m loving the cozy vibe.”

Joshua dipped his head down in a laugh, rubbing the back of his neck out of shyness, “Yeah, I heard about this place from Hoshi actually.”

“He seems to have orchestrated everything,” Anna could feel herself grinning as she thanked Joshua when he handed her the tabletop menu to have a look at.

“Yeah, yeah he definitely has his nose everywhere.” He agreed with an echoed laugh.

She took her bottom lip between her teeth, biting down gently as she studied over the menu. Everything looked and sounded delicious, it was hard to choose.

“Well, what are you thinking of getting? It might make this decision a little easier to pick something-,” Anna did another quick sweep over the menu before pulling her eyes away looking up, her cheeks instantly heating up when she had caught sight of Joshua’s eye’s lingering on her and the faintest smile on his lips, “What is it?”

“I-I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to stare, I was just...um-,” His cheeks mimicked her redness as he licked his lips and looked away quickly.

“No it’s okay!” She smiled at him as she laid the menu down on the table. Joshua turned back towards her and the butterflies in her stomach fluttered as he swiped a hand through his hair out of nervousness. She wasn’t going to mention to him that she had found it endearing.

“I was thinking of maybe getting this breakfast sandwich,” He drew her attention down towards one of the many pictures scattered across the menu showing the top rated foods, “If it’s anything like the picture, then I’m sure it’s gonna taste incredible.”

“It’s decided! Let’s make it two then!”

As they waited for their order to be called, her eyes dropped down to his phone set off on the side of the table, focusing her attention on the crack at the top of the screen, “Was that from me? I swear I’ll pay to have it fixed!”

His eyes widened as he took a sip from his coffee, shaking his head rapidly when her finger grazed over the obvious crack. He swallowed down his coffee, giving her a warm smile, “Anna, you’re gonna worry yourself crazy. I promise, don’t worry about it.”

His hand laid gently on top of hers, pulling her attention up towards him instead of on his phone after noticing her eyes not leaving the device. Her lips curled upwards into a small smile as she nodded her head, “You’re right, sorry- I mean, sorry-.” Anna closed her eyes in defeat, a sharp grin forming on her mouth knowing she wasn’t ever going to win the battle.

Joshua brought his hand up to shield his laugh away the best he could, tilting his head backwards on the chair.

Containing themselves together, Joshua’s hands clasped together as he rested his elbows on the table. In an attempt to calm her nerves down again, she copied his stance on the table, the two of them grinning back and forth at each other.

“Right, let’s play twenty questions. I’d ask where you were from but your accent kinda gives it away.”

“Is it really that noticeable?” Anna’s eyes crinkled as she joked back, scrunching her nose up into a laugh when Joshua pulled his thumb and pointer finger together to indicate a small amount, “Okay my turn, I actually don’t know this but I’ll ask it, where are you from? It’s so boring I know.”

“Hey, it’s still a question! And Los Angeles, born and raised. I moved here when I was seventeen? Eighteen? I honestly can’t remember anymore.”

Anna’s eyes perked up when he mentioned LA, with some of her relatives living there, she used to frequent visiting as often as she could, “I’ve always loved LA. I can’t really say it’s much different to Sydney though.”

“Hmm let me think,” Joshua rested his palms on the table as he leaned back in his seat, “Favorite childhood memory?”

“Ooo okay!” Anna grabbed her phone and went to the pictures app, opening up a folder containing pictures of her and her family, scrolling through until she found the ones that she needed to go along with the story. She flipped the phone around for Joshua to view them better, letting him flip through the pictures.

“So my dad works at a wildlife rescue and there were always a few animals that unfortunately couldn’t be released back into the wild for whatever the reason, so they housed and took care of them at the rescue,” Joshua looked up at Anna with a warm gaze, letting her know that he was listening, “Sometimes when I would come after school, my dad would let me hold the orphaned baby animals and I’d get to help feed them and play with them.”

“Look at you!” Joshua turned the phone around and showed the image of Anna sitting on the floor playing around with a baby kangaroo, “That’s so neat! I bet you were popular in school!”

“Everyone definitely wanted to be my friend after knowing I got to play with the animals.” She smiled at the memory as he continued to flip through the pictures.

He handed Anna back her phone after he was finished and without even skipping a beat, “Next time I visit, I’ll take you with me and we can go visit my dad!”

Anna’s eyes widened when she realized what she had said, her cheeks blushing a shade of light crimson, “O-Only if you’d want to that is!”

“Are you kidding? That would be an amazing experience.”

Anna cleared her throat as she smiled back at him, “Okay your turn, favorite childhood memory?”

Before he even had the chance to respond back, their order number was called from the front counter, pulling them both back into reality of where they were and what they were actually doing.

After leaving the café, the two of them had exchanged numbers and continued their game of twenty questions which in turn became forty questions the entire way home, going back and forth between the two of them.

“I guess Hoshi knew what he was doing,” Anna smiled down at her lap as another text message from Joshua came through.

‘Had a nice time today! :)

Would love to do it again sometime!

Get home safely!’

“Hmm, Soonyoung?” Jihyo’s puzzled face went unnoticed by Anna as she was too busy texting a message back to Joshua. She pulled her bottom lip between her teeth as she went back and forth on what to text back, deciding on something short and sweet.

‘Sure will! :) & I would like that very much!’

Anna leaned her head back against the headrest as she stared out of the window, a smile plastered to lips as she clutched her phone between her fingers, watching the trees and buildings pass by in a blink of an eye, taking in a deep breath and letting it out slowly.

“You should’ve seen my face,” Anna’s eyebrows pinched together as she leaned back against the couch, her phone resting on her knee while she facetimed Ten. She was expecting Hoshi over at any minute but figured while she waited, she could answer Ten’s call from earlier.

“I was so mortified Tennie.” She patted the spot next to her for Honey to jump up and lay down beside her.

“I’m sure he knows it was an accident,” He frowned in sympathy, “And to be fair, he ran into you just as much as you did to him.”

“Yeah but-,” She pouted her lips, tilting her head back against the cushion to groan in what felt like agony, “I don’t know. I was just stupid.”

“No, don’t say that,” He stood up from where he was on his own couch, moving into his bedroom when his members started entering the dorm, “You’re the smartest person I know.”

“Thanks Tennie, I really do appreciate it,” She smacked a hand against her forehead, smiling down at Honey as she wiggled around on the couch, “We haven’t interacted much beforehand and the one time we’re face to face.”

She hears Ten chuckle on the other side of the screen and she honestly doesn’t blame him. It was such a ridiculous scenario that she was so upset over yet here she was. She glanced down at her phone when a message caused it to vibrate against her leg. Hoshi texted her that he had arrived and was on his way up.

“As much as I’d love to stay and talk, I have to sadly say goodbye. Hoshi is almost here and I promised that we’d go out to eat somewhere.”

“That’s good, maybe he’ll talk some sense into you since you won’t listen to me,” Ten brought his phone closer to his face to say goodbye properly with a smile on his face, “Have a nice meal! Eat lots and I’ll talk to you again soon Annie!” He waved at the camera as did she, disconnecting from the call.

She leaned forward to lay her phone on the coffee table, flopping back against the couch with a huff, rolling her head over to the side to look down at Honey who was laying on her back, wagging her tail now that she had Anna’s attention.

“Your favorite person is coming over,” Anna scratched at Honey’s stomach as she was laid out on the couch cushion belly up. Her tail thumped against the cushion as Anna spoke to her. She knew how excited Honey got as soon as he was to knock on the door.

Almost like she had spoken it into existence, three knocks sounded at the door sending Honey flying off the couch to bark at whoever was on the other side. Anna quickly moved to the door, smiling at Hoshi as she let him inside, using her foot to gently keep Honey from bolting out into the hallway.

“Honey, I got you a present,” Hoshi’s voice was higher pitched as he spoke, digging into the bag resting in the crease of his elbow. He pulled out a little paw shaped cookie, feeding it to the dog waiting patiently at his feet. She happily accepted the treat, taking the cookie a few steps away to enjoy.

“She’s getting into the habit of wanting a treat every time I come home now thanks to you,” Anna grabbed the bag from Hoshi as he toed off his shoes and took off his coat, bringing it into the living room and setting it down on the coffee table.

“I passed by a little pet bakery on the way here and I had to stop in,” He defended himself with a raise of his hands, “You’re basically like my sister at this point, and that would make Honey like my niece. So, I’m going to treat her well every time I come over and you can’t stop me.” Anna rolled her eyes watching him as he washed his hands in the kitchen.

“Speaking of treating, this was supposed to be my turn to pay for the meal. We were supposed to go out,” Anna whined as she pulled out the boxes of fried chicken, two bottles of beer, and a container of spicy tteokbokki. Her favorites.

Hoshi cheekily smiled at her as he settled down on the floor, rubbing his hands together as his stomach grumbled hungrily, “You needed a pick me up so I got some of your favorites.”

Anna looked at him with a whine as she bit into the chicken, savoring the taste. He always knew how and what to do to pick her up out of a slump. She set the chicken down in the box, standing up quickly to retrieve the napkins she had forgotten to grab, handing a few off to him as she sat back down.

The two enjoyed the meal, talking about each other’s group and what upcoming activities planned. She was finding different things to talk about to stall, dreading bringing up what had happened backstage with Joshua and simply not wanting to go back to the memory but knowing deep down that she should. Hoshi was closer to him after all.

“Please tell me you told Jisoo I was so sorry about the other day,” Her eyebrows pinched together as she looked over at Hoshi. It was so cliché and she felt so stupid to even bring her coffee with her. It was all just one big mess from the get-go.

“Youngmi-ah,” He started, wiping his mouth with his napkin before speaking again, “I promise you he feels even worse.”

“He does?”

“Trust me when I say that’s all he talked about at practice. He couldn’t think straight and kept missing simple steps and making small mistakes that he almost never makes. Hell, he almost ran out to go buy you a new shirt since he ruined your other one so badly,” He took a swig from his bottle as Anna stared at him with wide eyes.

“But I-.”

She clamped her mouth shut when he held up a hand, a smirk playing on his lips, “He wants to meet up with you Youngmi, like really soon.”

A blush dusted her cheeks at the words. Soon? Her features softened the more she thought about it, Hoshi smiling and nodding his head as she put the idea together. She couldn’t help but feel all giddy inside.

“What does he mean by soon?” She welcomed Honey onto her lap, smoothing down her coat from where she had wriggled around on her dog bed.

“He said anytime that you’re free!”

“Did he mention where we would meet up?”

“There’s this new café that opened up not too far from here actually. We were talking about going to it the other day but we never made it over there before practice started.”

Anna nodded her head as started gathering their trash into the bag, “Oh yeah I think I’ve heard of it before. I can have Jihyo take me over there, did he mention a time at all?” She bit the inside of her cheek, suddenly being overcome with a wave of nervousness.

“I’ll have to get back to you on that.”

[Later that day]

“Shua-hyung,” Hoshi walked across the practice room with his hands clasped behind his back, smiling widely at the older sat against the wall.

Joshua picked his head up from his phone and smiled at Hoshi as he came closer, watching as he spun around and sat next to him on the floor, “What’s up?”

“There’s a new café close by opening up soon and I wanted to go check it out but no one else wants to go,” He brought a knee up and rested his arm against it. His lips formed a pout as he played with the hem of his shorts, “Can you please go with me.”

“I’m down! When are we going?”

“We’re free from schedules tomorrow right? How about then, maybe noon-ish?”

“Sure! Just text me tomorrow morning on where to be.”

“Hyung, you’re the best,” Hoshi giggled, giving Joshua a side hug, pushing himself off of the floor, “You’ll like it, I’m sure.”

He gave one last smile, turning on his heels and walking away from him, pulling out his phone and sending a text to Anna. She replied with two thumbs up and a kissy face. Hoshi giggled to himself as he slid his phone back into his pocket, doing a little dance in the back of his head. His plan to get them together was officially set into action. If they weren’t going to, than it was his mission as their best friend to help.

Coffee Stain

a/n : introducing anna’s love interest

“Ugh, I’m so exhausted,” Anna whined as she stood up from the sofa in the dressing room, stretching her arms above her arms until she heard a slight crack. Already changed out of her performance outfit, she couldn’t wait to get back to the dorm, take a nice hot shower, and just relax until she fell asleep. The first few days of promotions were always the hardest and waking up early in the mornings never got any easier.

“You worked so hard today,” Jihyo came from behind and wrapped her arms around Anna’s midsection, snuggling into her back comfortably. Anna held onto her arms and swayed the two of them back and forth, watching as the other members were laid out resting just as she was prior.

“And we’ve only just about started,” Anna snorted, patting Jihyo’s hands. The sudden urge for the bathroom crept up on her. Her body had finally come back to reality and was no longer running on work mode and all of the drinks she had throughout the day.

“I’m heading for the bathroom before we head out,” Anna reached down and grabbed her now watered down coffee from earlier, grimacing when she took a sip, “Maybe I can finish this on the way there and finally be done with it. It definitely doesn’t taste any better than it did this morning, that’s for sure.”

She shook the cup jokingly as Jihyo patted her on the stomach, letting her go and pulling out her phone, plopping down on the couch next to Jeongyeon.

Anna slipped out of the dressing room and made her way down the hallway, bowing her head to passing by staff members and cheering on the younger idols that greeted her, wishing them well for the future.

Just as she turned the corner at the end of the hall, a large body collided with hers, crushing the rest of her drink in between the two of them. The moment was instantaneous as her hands flew to his chest to steady herself. She internally cringed as the lukewarm coffee saturated into her clothes, the fabric sticking to her body.

“Ah- I am so so sorry,” Her voice was panicky, removing her hands from his chest rather quickly. Her normal peppy and cheerful voice had turned shy and timid. The rush of shock and embarrassment settling in the pit of her stomach. She crouched down and reached for his phone that he had dropped during the collision, the least she could do for him after spilling her drink all over him.

“No no, I should be the one saying sorry!” His soft voice was just as frantic as hers, crouching down as well and grabbing her now empty cup, “I came around the corner too quick and wasn’t watching where I was going. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay really! I wasn’t looking,” She rushed out, waving her hands around, “I really hope this didn’t break when it fell- Oh Jisoo!”

Her eyes widened when she realized who she had run into, her cheeks becoming dusted with a faint pink color. She swallowed the lump forming in her throat being this close to him. They hadn’t interacted much personally outside of their respective groups and she was embarrassed at this being their first interaction with each other.

“Jisoo, I-I’m really sorry about-.”

“It was an accident, you don’t have to keep apologizing,” His smile was breathtaking, effectively stopping her from repeating herself for another time. He reached his hand out for hers and pulled them both up from where they had been on the floor, “If anything, I take the blame for doing that to you.” He gestured to her clothes with a nod, the huge coffee stain on her shirt that was more noticeable now that she’s stood up.

Anna’s eyes flicked down to where he motioned, pouting her lips after seeing how big the stain actually was. She was starting to regret wearing white or just bringing her coffee with her at all.

Their hands were still connected, his warm hand around her freezing one felt very much like fire and ice. She bit the inside of her cheek as she yanked her hand back a little too quickly.

“Right sorry- I mean-,” She wanted to kick herself for being so awkward. Her eyes landed on his phone that she was still holding, bringing it forward to hand it off, “This belongs to you, I’m sorry again.”

The blush painted on her cheeks was radiating as she turned on her heels to hide her mortified expression from him. The feeling of needing to use the restroom long gone from her thoughts as she vacated up the hallway, too embarrassed to be there a second longer.

Nayeon was the first to greet Anna as she pushed open the door to the dressing room, her arms covering the stain on her shirt the best she could. It wasn’t doing much for the size of the stain, but most of the members hadn’t caught on to it yet. Everyone but Nayeon.

“Annie, what happened to you? Are you okay?” She ran her hand up and down Anna’s back, taking in Anna’s flushed face.

“I’m fine,” Anna’s tone wavered, hugging her arms tighter to her body, “It was just an accident, no biggie.” Nayeon was quick to remove her flannel from her body, draping it over Anna’s shoulders to help cover the stain.

“Was it intentional? I’ll hunt them down if it was.”

“No, not at all!,” Anna’s eyes widened at Nayeon’s bluntness, sending a smile her way instead, “Joshua and I just ran into each other, it’s okay.”

[Inside Seventeen’s dressing room]

Joshua walked into the dressing room, hands shoved into his front pockets. He should’ve brought his jacket with him to cover the obvious droplets of a stain on his shirt but it was too late now. He was left defenseless at the curiosity of the members.

“Hyung, what happened to you,” Dino looked up from where he was tying his shoelaces, catching the attention of some of the others. Hoshi walked closer with Seungkwan to get a closer look at his stained shirt.

“You didn’t leave with a coffee did you?” Seungkwan picked at Joshua’s shirt between his fingers, the stain was now partially dried.

“There was an accident and it was my fault.” He admitted sheepishly, eyeing the furrowed brows of the members.

“What? With who?”

“I ran into Youngmi and her drink was crushed between us,” He rubbed at the back of his neck, the heat of embarrassment crawled up the back of his neck at the memory, “She’s wearing most of it.”

“You ran into Annie?” Seungkwan's eyes widened as he slapped a hand over his mouth in shock, followed by Hoshi’s voice echoing through the dressing room as he nudged at Joshua’s shoulder with his hand, “Yah, how could you do that to her.”

“Not on purpose!” Joshua swallowed thickly, waving his hands nervously, “We both turned the corner too quickly and ran into each other.”

“At least it was you and not me,” Seungkwan sighed, putting a hand to his chest, “I’ve had way too many awkward encounters with them to count.” He clapped Hoshi on the back before pulling him back to their conversation with Dk and Vernon.

Joshua cleared his throat, feeling his ears turn a light shade of pink. The look on Anna’s face when she left stuck in his mind. He could tell she was taking the blame for their mishap without saying it. He dragged himself over to the couch and sank down onto the cushion, pulling his phone out of his pocket to sit comfortably.

His gaze fell onto the top right corner, swiping his thumb across the very obvious crack on his screen that wasn’t there before.
