y'know, i'm gonna keep it real. yamcha deserved better than bulma. like i don't think it's intended as a narrative punishment but vegeta, known asshole who literally did genocide for a living ending up with one of the most petty, selfish and frankly abusive characters on the show? i'm not saying this is 100% the correct way to interpret it, but i feel like you can very much in good faith read it as one of those "both of these characters are fucked but them being together is the best possible outcome because subjecting them to anyone else would be torment" type relationships. god i feel bad for trunks, poor kid. i can say that now, i'm like a year or two older than future trunks was at the end of the cell saga

Dragon Ball 01-03
At the behest of the folks on a forum I frequent, I’ve decided to archive my liveblog of the Dragon Ball animes. I’ve been watching the subtitled and dubbed versions of the series plus reading the manga, and comparing the versions.
Here is the beginning of that archival.
So I've decided on a lark to revisit the Dragon Ball animes. OG, Z, GT, and then Super. It's actually been a long time since I've seen Dragon Ball animated in a way that wasn't a Team Four Star production or the Broly film.
I'm three episodes into OG Dragon Ball and man, Toei really tried to push Pilaf, Mai, and Shu as a Team Rocket-esque recurring nemesis, didn't they? It's funny how totally inconsequential and occasionally batshit their segments in episodes 2 and 3 are.
In episode 2, they try to investigate a Dragon Ball near where Goku and Bulma are camped, but it turns out to just be a pack of wolves. The wolves' shining eyes tricked their spies into thinking they were seeing the shining of a Dragon Ball.
Also, they have spies. XD In the manga, the entire Pilaf Empire is literally just these three idiots.
Their role in episode 3 is even better. While the Muten-Roshi is giving the Nimbus and Dragon Ball to Goku and Bulma respectively, the Pilaf Gang loots his house to try and find that same Dragon Ball. Pilaf gets a phone call that the Muten-Roshi has a Dragon Ball. Because of his spies, I suppose?
They turn the Muten-Roshi's house upside-down searching for the Dragon Ball but, no luck, because he's already given it to Bulma. Finally, they resort to interrogation. But.
Like.
The only person living with the Muten-Roshi at this point is Turtle, and he's with the Muten-Roshi right now. So Toei introduces an inexplicable alligator that just happens to be sunning himself on the island, and is familiar with the Muten-Roshi. The rando gator winds up being totally unnecessary because the Muten-Roshi returns five seconds later to explain what happened to the Dragon Ball, and to put a hole in their submarine for shits and giggles. The Pilaf Gang is utterly thwarted without ever actually interacting with Goku and Bulma.
Also, as random as Toei's gator is, it's not even half as random as the fart joke that Funimation adds to the Pilaf Gang's downfall in the dub. As their ship begins to sink, they start complaining about a weird smell returning, to which Pilaf asserts, "He who smelt it, dealt it!" This in no way segues into their submersion, which immediately follows.

ok, like. seeing goku go around a city completely clueless, getting yelled at by cab drivers and having people trying to mug him. this is good shit, it's honestly really funny to have a clueless but unfathomably powerful child having to interact with the mundane, familiar world. it's like seeing ares at a burger king getting confused when they don't accept drachmae

watching through the original dragon ball. here are some of my thoughts so far:
goku gets shot by bulma in the face within the first 5 minutes of the first episode. she empties the entire mag of a pistol, and he's like "owie!" and then they move on. one or two episodes later, she pulls out an uzi and also empties the mag into him, and he's still fine. i make note of this because there have been multiple times where people pull guns on goku & friends and the friends are like "omg goku watch out, they've got guns!!!" and goku isn't just like "yeah, and? i've been shot before, only kinda stings"
goku's a goddamn troglodyte and i love that. there's multiple times where he calls technology "monsters" and "witchcraft", and he seemingly has very little concept of gender or decency. it's a running joke that goku pats people on the gents to tell what gender they are, which would be creepy if he wasn't a goddamn kid and seemingly completely oblivious to anything like that. later on, whenever roshi's being a pervert, goku just doesn't get it, and i'd argue he's kind of ace coded? idk
weird sexualization of bulma. would be fine if she was an adult, but she's like 16. a bit weirded out by this, but to be fair this isn't a unique problem to dragon ball; a lot of people talk about how common stuff like this is in anime/japanese media, but i think that westerners sometimes get a bit xenophobic about it and ignore how our own media frequently has similarly gross stuff. also a bit weirded out by how chichi is like, 10, and is introduced in clothes that look like a bad scifi pinup from the 50s. cringed out of my mind when yamcha was pretending to be into her so she wouldn't be mad at him . there's a bunch of small things that are usually played as gags but have some... uncomfortable, connotations, at least to my eyes. thankfully it never really like, goes all the way like some anime do
it's interesting in retrospect seeing yamcha being the first antagonist that proves to be of any real difficulty to goku, since y'know. he's fucking yamcha. kinda goofy to see him be actually somewhat competent, but to be fair the power scaling in this series is bullshit
agent mai is described by the wiki as being intelligent, but i'd contest that at least a little. you know that old joke that's like, "go hit on people with your ugly friend because then you'll look better by comparison"? i think that she's like, a normal amount of stupid. she could be your coworker at a dead end job who you talk to a lot, and while she's definitely competent at what she does, she's also just like, kind of a ditz. i also think that because she has a relatively serious, dignified manner of speaking, she seems smarter than she actually is. i think this is compounded by how she works with two of the dumbest, most bumbling motherfuckers alive, so her competence seems like genius in comparison. there's one scene near the end of the first arc where pilaf gives them both guns, and frankly if she were any smart she would've just fucking shot him for putting their lives consistently in as much danger as he has. i still love her though
i literally just got to the part with launch and i love her already. maybe it's my "i love the kind of woman that could kick my ass" showing but hholy shit, i love her dearly. like legit, her introduction is hands down the best part of the show so far, i especially loved it when goku beat up those cops. goku really said acab

oh my fucking god the pirate robot is so fucking cool, i love this guy. honest to god looks like one of the most akira toriyama designs i've ever seen, and i mean this in the best way possible. it feels kinda like he wanted to design a robot master for a megaman game, though i'm pretty sure megaman wasn't a thing until after this came out since i'm pretty sure OG dragon ball was from the very early 80s. not entirely sure though

the way people in this show say kamehameha when they're not actually doing it sounds wrong. like it's very hard to properly convey but when someone's actually doing it, they pronounce it correctly (like kah may hah may hah), but in conversation it's not how the proper pronunciation goes (kuh may huh may huh)
