I scream, Icecream

Today is Poila boisakh ( New year) and bengalis around the world who throng the streets in their new sarees and kurtas eating rosogolla and kosha mangsho are sadly confined to their homes.Including myself.

But luckily I am in Kolkata,and that means Ma will be making some delicacy with limited rations(yes they somehow know these tricks). Right after lunch,I felt something was missing.Apart from chaatni and mishti doi,vanilla icecream used to be an integral part of our dessert menu- especially when we dined out,but not today.

As I sighed in disappointment ,walking to my room I thought I heard a distant bell,like the ones pheriwallahs rang trying to sell their wares on the streets.I moved closer to the window and there the bell went off again! This time right below my balcony.Ofcourse that was not right,that couldn't be.A Kwality walls icecream uncle with his cart,now? Was it an essential good? (Why not though?!)

In a flash, I remembered how several years ago when nuclear families were not in vogue ,every Sunday during summer vacation used to be Icecream Sundays (Wait , is that where "Sundae" came from?!) All the cousins would refuse to go to bed after the heavy mutton, kaacha aam er chutney lunch,patiently waiting for the icecream cart to announce it's arrival in our North Kolkata para lane.And then following the Piper's "Kwalityyyy Kwalityyyy" crooning ,we would line up at the gate.(Btw there were fake Rwality carts who made their stuff from Nordomar jol/sewage,so that was forbidden).

The elders took turns in treating.Ofcourse hailing from a lower middle class family, our allowance was fixed at "1 orange stick"(popsicle) per kid.At the time, they sold for 3 bucks each.Some of the older family members were also allowed indulgence once in a while - mostly plain vanilla cups that came with these flat wooden spoons.But our Mr Piper was nothing short of a magician for me and his cart,a treasure chest. Due to height limitations at the time,I couldn't see the contents of it,but it thrilled me each time he put his hand inside and pulled out exactly the stuff we wanted! Over time the orange sticks graduated to Junior Choco bar ( kwality merged with Walls & subsidized choco bar for middle class kids) and then Chhota Feast.

And then launched an iconic product where sharing icecreams equated to falling in love.Much like what Silk is doing to Cadburys,Cornetto did that to Walls. But,love didn't come cheap- 40 Rs at the time to be precise. Sigh. Co-ed girls had hopes.I had to sign trade agreements.90% in Maths for a Cornetto.That priceless block of chocolate at the bottom,love it was.

It would be blasphemous to not mention the arrival of competitors like Metro.

Metro icecreams were local , cheap and tasty. Especially,butterscotch. In a world of Engineering(Vanilla) , Medical(Strawberry) &MBA (2 in 1), Butterscotch was Economics. This brand eventually became a staple in bengali weddings since mid 90's.

The next most important & disastrous event in history of Indian icecreams would be the launch of softies.Watered down icecreams on a cone for 5 Rs a piece were the rage at that time.From movie halls to pujo pandals to Park street restaurants,every one wanted to install a machine.And as if that inundation wasn't enough,Mcdonald's launched their own version of soft serve swirls dipped in molten chocolate,cheaper thus wiping out every machine from the market. But in their effort of product differentiation,they introduced a heavenly combo- that of brownie with soft serve.Which another Indian brand picked up (thankfully) & made a masterchef dish out of it:Yes, CCD's sizzle dazzle brownie with a scoop of vanilla.To be honest, college kids like me could only afford them if they were on a date or if it was being shared among 2/3 friends. Icecream revolutions continued and so did my life struggles, till in 2010 when I landed in Bangalore for my first job.My cousin at that time coaxed me into a treat and suggested "Let's go to Corner House". I arrived there expecting a lunch place ,starving.But it was a subway for icecream parlors,except you knew the ingredients!You could choose your flavor,toppings,sauces. My cousin completely disregarded my new found freedom & ordered a "Death by chocolate" for us.I couldn't have been happier (& fatter), a treat that went cheap on the pocket & a love that has lasted till this day. My Mumbai stint made me an ardent fan of fruit icecreams- e.g. Tender Coconut from Naturals.But Mumbai makes you fall in love with everything .On a regular humid midnight,sitting in Marine drive,even the kulfis garnished with the salt from the seabreeze or the golas on Juhu beach tasted magnificent!

My next and last wow moment in my icecream timetravel has been the discovery of Nolen Gur (fresh jaggery) icecream in Bhojohori Manna.Incidentally that was another Poila boisakh dinner with the family.When we dressed up and went out.Happier times.

These days I buy icecream to kill my lonely evenings in my US home. I usually get lost in the Supermarket aisles trying to locate the icecream cabinets.Finally when I find my way,and try to rummage my hands through the vanilla chocolate fudge, marshmallow dream,triple chocochip mocha boxes trying to decide between Haagen Daz or Ben & Jerry, suddenly I want to be able to pull out the 3 Rupees Orange popsicle,sticking out my colored tongue along with the cousins . Alas, this was by no means a treasure chest and I, not a magician to wave a wand & travel back to those days.
