Toyohara Kunichika print exhibition at Liverpool’s Lady Lever Art Gallery
Toyohara Kunichika print exhibition at Liverpool’s Lady Lever Art Gallery
A stunning new exhibition of prints by Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) is an exciting follow up from Liverpool’s Lady Lever Art Gallery’s previous exhibition Edo Pop. Toyohara Kunichika was one of the most important 19th century print makers in Japan. Artisans, Beauties, and Annual Events - Toyohara Kunichika Japanese - 1874
This album preserves a cornucopia of images of traditional Japanese culture at the beginning of the Meiji period, a time when the island country was opening up to modernization effected by engagement with the West.
The images capture people—mostly women—of all walks of life enjoying outdoor excursions, activities of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters, or annual festivities across the four seasons.
Yet, central to the set, and in many ways the most interesting and instructive images, are the depictions of women and men busy at occupations that once defined Japan before modernization encroached: carving religious sculptures in stone and wood; constructing homes and temples according to traditional methods; dyeing and embroidering textiles; mounting paintings with silk borders.

The Shirai-Ryu Onna-Musha (& Alt Hair)
Inspired by The Female Bandit Oroku by Toyohara Kunichika
Tumblr media
The female bandit series by Toyohara Kunichika fucks yall. I may or may not do the rest of the series with Harumi, depending on how funky the anatomy is.
Harumi looks good with a kitana, and better with a naginata, but hot with a weapon in her hand.
