James is a medium-sized engine. Their six driving wheels are not as big as Gordon’s and not as small as Thomas’. She has a fine scarlet coat and a brass dome and likes to think of himself as a really splendid engine. This can occasionally lead to high falutin’ ideas about the sort of work suitable for such a noble creature: invariably they land Jamie into trouble.

[[HISTORY]]
James’ history prior to Sodor is very… mysterious. Not that they’re hiding some dark and troubled past, it’s just poorly documented. It’s believed that she’s part of a small class of Moguls built by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway prior to the Great War, the same batch that Hughes was part of. He kinda just appeared on the railway one day, not expected or announced, but more than welcome to stay. The Fat Controller would have dug deeper into nir origins, but was simply glad to have another engine for the railway.
Their history on Sodor, however, is a constant uphill battle against fate. James is largely considered by the crews to be “Karma’s Favourite Chew Toy”, and it’s not uncommon for anyone working with her on a given day to be carrying some manner of good luck charm with them.
In spite of this, James is largely a reliable engine, even if it does mean he’ll complain about doing the work one would rather leave to lesser engines. And don’t even get nir started on diesels…
[[SHINY]]
Following James’ crash on their first day, the men at the Works noted that she hadn’t fully come out of the wreck unscathed – he was, in fact, missing a tooth. The repair was done quickly, and not long after James received a gold tooth that replaced nir lost one.
[[AN ENGINE OF MANY COLOURS]]
James likely has one of the most varied livery histories of all the engines on the island. On one part, James carries themself in such high regard of being “unique” (in spite of Hughes existing) that she fully believes they should have a unique livery. On the other, he’s been used for various film productions both on and off the island, meaning ne’s been repainted this way and that more times than one could count. This itself has brought up many problems on its own accord, especially regarding James’ ego.
[[BRANCH LINE BLUES]]
James actually likes working on Branch Lines away from the Main Line. In the early days, they tried to keep this as much of a secret from the other engines (even Thomas when they were dating) for fear of being tormented by the likes of Gordon over it. She’s grown out of it, thankfully, and often enjoys being able to travel here, there, and everywhere across the Island.
[[JAMES & THE TROUBLE WITH DIESELS]]
James has an unfortunate history with Diesels. This has largely been the case for most notable visiting diesels on the island. Felix, Andy, Candice, and many others on top of them have been nothing but a pain in the tender for them. Though she put up with the likes of BoCo and Bear, he could never bring nemself to truly like them. However, James came to respect and even appreciate them thanks to two they’ve made good friends with over the years - Oswald, and the Works Diesel.
Oswald arrived on loan to the North Western Railway during the 1980s, shortly before his class was withdrawn on the Other Railway. At first, he was stuck-up and quite rude, but after having his ego checked and mellowing out a bit, come winter he was a changed engine, and offered a permanent place on the Fat Controller’s Railway. He can still be haughty, but is a much better engine for his experiences.
The Works Diesel is largely a mysterious figure among the other engines. No engine knows its actual name, only its presence on the Eastern side of the Island. It shows its face just to do its work, but is rarely seen outside of that. It carries an air of mystery to it as if it knows more than it lets on about, in a manner that genuinely feels unnerving.
The engines all recognize them, but no one can tell you anything about them as an individual because it refuses to divulge anything about itself. To this extent, the engines have given it a variety of different monikers. The Works Diesel. The Fixer. The Cleaner. Apparently someone called it 'Mike' once and got nothing but a cold stare. But everyone knows it as the engine you go to to get things done.
