Keijiro Kai has for several years now been wading into high-impact, testosterone-filled festivals around the world with his Mamiya 7 and rolls and rolls of Fuji Pro 400H film. His current exhibition, "Charanga", is of Tinku festivities, a Bolivian Quechua of traditional, ritualistic combat. 

In amongst the dust and men and flying fists Kai pulled out images that never directly explain "why" and just barely "where"-  rather than explain, Kai's work carefully, through it's denial of traditional travel/sports photographic technique, denies a clean reading of the possible meaning of what's shown. 

A freelance sports photographer, Kai knows how to do his day job- but his personal work is exciting precisely because it is unsettlingly shot, chaotically shot, and beautifully presented. He's self-published two books already: one of the rowdy red-faced Royal Shrovetide Football Match in Derbyshire, England called Shrove Tuesday and Wounded Bears, a book of the Dosojin fire festival held in Nagano, Japan. 

Neither of his books have answers in their pages- National Geographic or Magnum, this ain't. Rather than work as an objective, morality-focused eye,  Kai's work transcends sport and even culture altogether. In his photographs he shows how parameters of ritual barely contain an atavistic presence in man which society has worked so hard to collar.

[Exhibition] べ・ジンヒ / 배진희 / 裵陳姬 / Bae, Jinhee 「Family Project」 2019.10.8(tue) - 10.20(sun) Open 12:00-19:00 Closed Mondays 「家族」とは何かと考えてみると最初に思い浮かぶのは夫婦もしくは父母だ。すなわち異なる二つの性別の人間が出会いますます大きな共同体を作り上げること。あるいは血縁により繋がれた集団に至ることが家族であろう。しかしこのような血縁関係の形はそれを包括する巨大な集団〈社会〉により違う気質や特性を見せる。 韓国人にとって「（韓国の）家族」の代表的な特性をあげるとしたら、まずは「家父長的」もしくは「儒教的」という単語を浮かべるだろう。韓国は代々大家族の形態（少なくとも３世代以上が一つの家で暮らす形）をもっとも望ましく見習うべき家族像として思ってきた。その理由は明確である。一族の家長がすなわち人生の指標であり、充実した教科書であるためだ。夫婦が父母になり、その父母がまた祖父母に移っていく過程こそが教育であり、共に生きる社会の姿であるのだ。しか しこのような伝統的な家族の姿は決して普遍ではない。社会の風習は時代別環境に影響を受け、人間関係は同世代に影響される。家庭の消費規模は国家の経済規模に影響されついには完全な自分の家庭のことは残らなくなる。このような過程の繰り返しは家族の間の葛藤や不和を起こしたり、より強い結束力を持ったりもする。 家に家族が多く集まることがいつも楽しいことだとは限らない。属する人が多いということはそれだけ多くの規律と役割が決まることにもなる。毎年の節句に女性は台所に閉じ込められたかのように料理をし、男性はよく覚えてもいない親戚の人々の機嫌を伺うために歩き回る。子供達は一定の場所で望んでない時間を過ごさざるを得ないことが当たり前となる。 しかしこのようなことが韓国人にとって真率な家族の意味になるのか。一年のうちに１、２回ほどのイベントに過ぎなく日常を暮らす上でさほどの影響を及ぼすことはないだろう。しかし、だからと言ってこのような家族の中の行事を価値のないことと片付けてしまってよいのだろうか？。 「Family Project」の作品で私は社会的現状より家族が互いに共感を得ていこうとする短編的な姿に注目した。歳をとった夫婦が同じ家で寝て食べて話をし、共に痛みを分かち合いながら愛し合うものである。これらの写真は韓国でよく目にする家庭の姿を表しているというよりは、既成世代の夫婦の日常に光を当てたものだ。これは世代間の格差とは別に、家族の文化を作り上げるのに最もの役割を果たすのが夫婦であることを強調したかったからである。 夫婦あるいは父母の日常を根掘り葉掘りと赤裸々に記録し表すことで、この作品を見る観客に自分の家族と一緒に過ごす日常を自然に思い浮かばせたかった。それから家族と一緒に過ごす人生、互いとの関係を結ぶということがが何を意味するかを改めて問いかけ、今日の家族解体と崩壊の現像を復元すべき価値と認識してくれることを望むのである。 #tppg #totempolephotogallery #photogallery #photo #gallery #photographer #photography #exhibition #photoexhibition (TOTEM POLE PHOTO Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3UydBTn6Pz/?igshid=7p36xtplmfq6

Everything is captured in small pieces as a part of a larger story, pictures that are asking questions and will provoke more questions. Profile デビ・スチャ氏は1987年ジャカルタ出身のインドネシア人アーティストです。2017年に東京ビジュアルアーツ専門学校を卒業後、フリーカメラマンとして活動を開始。現在は広告、ドキュメンタリー、新聞記事など幅広い分野で活躍しています。 新しい場所を探検することに熱心なスチャ氏は2013年に来日し、異文化を学ぶために日本国内や諸外国を旅し、様々な人と出会いました。外国人として日本に暮らすスチャ氏は周りから暖かく歓迎され、彼女にとって日本はまるで故郷かのような場所です。スチャ氏は常に自分自身を変革してゆくことを好み、日常生活から離れる中で新しい作品の着想を得ています。全く別の世界に住んでいる人たちの現実的な感覚を鑑賞者に楽しんでもらうことがスチャ氏の作品の目的です。 My name is Deby Sucha, born in 1987, Jakarta, Indonesia. My enthusiasm for travel to go somewhere new has moved me to Japan in 2013. I spent a past few years travelling around Japan and some other countries learning about different peoples and cultures. I found Japan is very welcoming to live in, but I need to keep myself challenged and out of the regular routines. I learn something, from spending my time to get to know my subjects and their environment. I aim for those who view my pictures to feel like they were actually there, to feel the energy of people who live on the other side of the globe.
