Paying my respects for the first visit of the new year! I loved every second I spent here. I went when there was only one other person here and it was so peaceful. Water droplets from previous rainfall were dripping off of every branch and leaf. The river running next to the shrine provided the perfect white noise. As I was walking on the path to the shrine I couldn’t help but be reminded of the dense foliage of Hawaii. It made me so homesick! I found out about this shrine while doing a research project on the architectural history of the torii. Before that, I had no idea that America even had a Shinto shrine. I would have loved to make it up here during the actual New Year’s event, but alas, it could not be done. Above the famous Dazaifu shrine at Tenjin lies the beautiful Mt Homan trail. A winding mix of many features, it was the first mountain I climbed in Japan and has been a favorite of mine since I arrived three years ago. Yesterday I arrived to Hakone on the Romancecar. The area is so peaceful and quiet. I even stopped using my headphones to listen to the sounds of nature. I visited a public onsen that many families from outside of Hakone come to visit for their holidays. I also had a hearty meal at the location. I had to walk back to my pod hotel since there were no taxis and buses available (everything after 5pm on Sundays stops) but I am glad I did because the walk back was incredible. Another highlight was finding a Torii gate by accident. My first one and I know it won’t be the last one. Standing in front of it had this inexplicable energy. Everything was a different kind of silence.
