Tokyo These Days Volume 1: Move On From Manga
Tumblr media
At this point, Taiyo Matsumoto is no stranger to greatness, and Tokyo These Days no more betrays that sentiment than any of his other works. A series centered around the perception and experience of passion in the modern day where money means more than anything else in the world, Tokyo These Days is a damning and painful, yet powerful manga about the exploration of that passion beneath the oppression of industry.
The story opens with our main character, Shiozawa, quitting his job as a manga editor due to the performance of a magazine he was in charge in. Feeling responsible for its failure and how it affected the creators beneath him, he chose to step away from the manga industry at large.
Following this, we see Shiozawa wander through his freshly jobless life as we examine his experience as well as several others through the framework of the manga industry, and how the concept of profit or value defines the works of creatives in the modern age.
It's a story rife with passion but also pain, as it expresses how troubling the world is with accepting the passion of others. Mangaka that pour their soul into their work but receive nothing from it, or ones that are too afraid to even attempt that. Creators that have forgone creativity so that they can retain their feeling of safety in the world.
It's a breadth of characters that express these intense complexities and story arcs as if it were as natural as breathing to them. The divorced father that couldn't make time for his daughter, but will push on the back of his assistant like he would a son. The mother that has trouble relating to her family and those around her, but can be entirely absorbed in the worlds that she creates. The manga editor that desperately wants to distance themselves from manga by selling their collection, but ultimately can't do it.
Tokyo These Days isn't obsessed with one singluar point, but rather with expressing its story as human. Matsumoto has an intense desire to provide a sense that the characters in this story are troubled, and that this trouble stems directly from their passion. Where industry and capitalism cripple the abilities of these people, they themselves in turn limit themselves. Such is the life of a creator, Matsumoto explains.
You might conflate passion with suffering itself in that way, but Tokyo These Days doesn't quite provide that sort of damning connection, yet. Through all the struggles, through all the challenges and pain that plague someone rife with passion, there exists rays of light that pierce the dark clouds hanging over them. Going to a batting cage with another mangaka and letting off steam, finally making a breakthrough in your manuscript, being given the confidence to draw again.
Matusmoto posits that for as much pain and suffering there is in creation in the modern day, as long as passion exists, beauty will stem from it, as well expression, appreciation, and love.
At the end of this volume, Shiozawa expresses the deepest aspects of that passion- so long as he can help create something beautiful, it doesn't matter if it makes money. Truly, the pinnacle of expression in the modern day, and truly, another phenomenal work from Matsumoto.
