Healing Ties - Chapter 20 - Part 1

Danya drew in a deep breath and let it out as a sigh.
"Hamish, could you find Simon for me? I think he was helping to fix some things today but I'm sure they won't mind if I steal him back early given the circumstances."
"Sure."
Hamish scooped Jasper up in his arms.
"Let's go find your dad. Can you sniff him out for me?"
Jasper squirmed out of Hamish's arms.
"I'm too big to be carried."
"Nah, you're not because I'm really strong. I can pick up even the biggest of kids."
"I'm stronger than you," Jasper insisted, then he dashed off on all fours.
"I don't think that's true..." Hamish said as he followed after him.
Danya watched them leave and then turned back to Fanner and smiled and shook his head.
"Come on. I'll show you where we live. You can stay with us until we can find somewhere more permanent for you."
"Oh. Thank you. I hope I won't be in the way."
Danya frowned at him.
"Fanner, I've been looking for you for almost a year now. You're not in the way."
Fanner didn't know what to say to that, how to process the concept that all this time when he had felt so alone and uncared for there had been someone out there trying to find him.
His own brother.
Was this what it felt like to have family?
Fanner followed Danya down a dirt path that led between the cabins.
They weren't of uniform shape or size or even particularly lined up neatly.
Some were painted in various colours and they all had their own decorative touches.
The cabin Danya led him up to had a low fence surrounding its garden beds covered in tiny, short fingered handprints in several different colours of paint.
Jasper's work, clearly.
Inside the cabin was a small room with a single door leading off of it.
It contained a table surrounded by four wooden chairs, some bedding on the floor, a chest and a cupboard.
There was a well worn plush dog sitting on the pile of bedding.
Danya guided Fanner to the bedding and they sat down together.
Fanner picked up the plush dog and clutched it in his lap.
"Where have you been, Fanner?" Danya asked again.
"I didn't bring you here right away because things were still a little chaotic. I didn't want to bring you into an unstable situation when you were still safe at Milaine House. Then about a year ago I finally decided it was time to bring you in. Maybe the situation won't stay safe and stable for long but Fanner, something is going to happen and I want you with us when it does."
"Something?"
"The humans don't want to follow us over the border to confront us properly but eventually they will. If we lose, perhaps we're driven further outside of human territory and won't be able to easily return. If we win... well, who knows but you might have felt the ripples of that even if you weren't involved."
"Oh."
"Wherever you were..." Danya said. "We broke into the offices, you know. We looked through your file. It just abruptly ended when you disappeared. No sale documents. Nothing about a transfer. Not even documentation of your death. They still had a file on me and there was a note about me dying in there. There should have been something. What happened?"
Fanner shrugged.
There was a small tear in the fabric of the dog and Fanner focussed on mending it with his magic so that he would have an excuse not to look at Danya.
"Mr Burrows found out about my powers and he wanted to test them but that sort of magic would be illegal so I suppose there was no official documentation of his experiments."
"Experiments? Fanner, what did he do to you?"
"He just hurt me because... um..."
Fanner found himself involuntarily swallowing as his throat closed up.
"Because I heal faster when I pull energy from things, I guess. Or just in general. But um.... Can you not tell anyone about that? I don't want anyone getting the same ideas..."
Danya looked absolutely heartbroken, so Fanner looked back down at the plush dog.
"Fanner, nobody's going to hurt you here. They have no right to. Okay?"
"Well, what does that mean?" Fanner asked. "Did Mr Burrows have the right to? Maybe because he owned me but all you really need to own someone is enough power over them. I imagine there are plenty of people here more powerful than me..."
Danya sighed.
"I understand why you would feel that way. We were never given rights. Of course telling you something is your 'right' doesn't feel like a guarantee. But, Fanner, what unites us here is a moral objection to slavery. Nobody here is going to make a slave of you and if they tried to they would be stopped. I would stop them personally if nobody else beat me to it."
"I... I suppose I sort of knew that but..." Fanner turned the plush dog in his hands, over and over. "I'm just not a fighter and I don't want to be but if there's a big battle coming and everyone knows the things I can do they'll want me to fight. Maybe they can't force me in the same sense you would force a slave but that doesn't mean it will be easy to say no."
"I can see your point. Things get more complicated in that sort of situation. Even if nobody pressures you, I can't guarantee you'll never be in a position where you have to choose to either fight or let something bad happen to yourself or others. If that happens, I hope you won't be too afraid of yourself to do what you need to."
Fanner nodded, his eyes firmly aimed at the plush dog.
"You won't be the only non-combatant, though. You've met my son. He's four. If anything happens, my top priority is getting him somewhere safe. There are many children here, many mages among us who have absolutely no combat abilities. There will be a group for you to go with. But... yes. I do hope that if I wasn't there, you would step up to protect Jasper if it ever came to it."
Fanner hesitated and then nodded.
Of course he would.
He had used his ability against Yore because he had thought it was necessary.
If he would do that to protect himself, he would do whatever he needed to in order to protect Jasper.
He just really hoped to avoid ever being in that situation.
"Of course I will."

#3: To Estonia
Last night, we had packed our bags ready to leave for Tallinn, Estonia the next morning because we were on the 9am boat. However, when we rose at 7am, Mikko told us that instead of wearing snow pants, like we had all agreed upon the previous day, we should wear jeans. This meant going to the bottom of our suitcases to get them. He also decided to take a massive suitcase full of everyone’s snow clothes “just in case”. Michelle had had a big night at the extended lunch, and we were informed of the copious amounts of wine consumed. She spent most of the morning in the bathroom, and Mikko spent most of the morning cracking jokes about it (he’s on thin ice considering he’s an alcoholic). We got a taxi to the dock, checked in and grabbed a bite to eat while we were waiting to board. At this point, things were a little bit tense, not helped by Max being incredibly annoying.
Once we boarded, we found our cabin and set ourselves up for the two and a half hour journey. There were four beds in the room (bunkbeds), a private bathroom and a window out onto the ocean (apparently it was only about 40 euros extra to get the cabin). Max and Mikko set off to explore the ship, and Jasper and I lagged behind a bit so we didn't have to go with them. We went up to the top deck, saw the outside, felt the cold, and then went back into the cabin. I slept on and off for the two hours like Michelle, and Jasper wrote some music. Max took advantage of the duty free things for sale, buying deodorant, a bag and some kind of (toxic) spray (all from expensive brands I can't remember the name of, but hey, whatever gets him to wear deodorant).
We then got a taxi to the hotel, which is extremely nice due to Michelle’s insanely high standards. We couldn't check in yet because it was only 11am, so we dropped our bags and began our search for lunch. We’re staying in the old town, inside of the wall, where its all cobblestone streets, small shops, winding roads and nice looking buildings. After wondering the streets for a while, we sat down at this medieval themed restaurant. I ordered the best tasting meal!
Tumblr media
We then walked around the town a bit more and visited the Christmas markets. There was some terrible dancing on the big stage, a real life Santa, a group of ladies each carrying a chihuahua and lots of little stalls. Max had to play the carnival games on offer (winning a Cookie Monster toy I ended up having to carry most of the day), then we meandered through the stalls.
Tumblr media
We got some tiny pancakes at one of the stalls and then got onto a tram thing that had stopped. We weren't sure of the protocol, but figured if we had to pay, they'd let us know and we could just pay then. We met a young couple from the Netherlands in the same situation, but they left when we found out it wasn't free. We also weren't entirely sure where it went, but figured the protection from the cold wind would be nice. It was playing Christmas songs the entire trip as a bonus! We saw the many sights of Tallinn, such as a nightclub, a Gentlemen’s club, a spa, some weird puppet shops and doll museums.
Tumblr media
After this we walked to a chocolate/coffee shop/bakery (pictured below), which was very nice and cozy and had lots of little treats on offer. From here, we began our walk back to the hotel to check in when Jasper and I bought some ugly Christmas jumpers (pictures to come tomorrow). We also bought a Christmas decoration to bring back home, which took a while to find one that wasn't made out of wood.
Tumblr media
With Michelle’s magic black card, we got upgraded into King Suites at the hotel, so Jasper and I finally have a bed of appropriate width and thickness. Keep in mind, the previous bed in Helsinki was in a kids room, had two single covers, was as thin as a flimsy book and was shorter than Jasper. There was also a pillow menu on the covers, so we might have to try that!
After an hour’s rest in the rooms, we went to dinner which was about twenty metres from the hotel. It was Italian cuisine with nice starters, but I ordered poorly at the main course. Jasper had wild boar lasagne and said it was very nice, so maybe you could try that recipe Mum.
We were only meant to be staying until tomorrow morning, but, much to Max’s displeasure, we’ve moved everything to stay another night. Max has cracked the shits at least twice today, once because he was hungry, and once because he didn't want to stay here another night. With this in mind, I bet tomorrow will be super fun!

Muji to sell tiny blackened-timber prefab huts for £21,000
Japanese brand Muji has unveiled its design for a compact nine-square-metre prefabricated house, which will go on sale later this year.
The Muji Hut will be available for purchase in Japan for ¥3,000,000 (£20,989) from August 2017. The minimalist retailer intends the simple cabin to suit a wide variety of locations, describing it as somewhere between a permanent residence and a holiday home.
It follows a series of housing models unveiled by the brand, including a trio of ready-constructed holiday cabins designed by Naoto Fukasawa, Konstantin Grcic and Jasper Morrison.
"It's not as dramatic as owning a house or a vacation home, but it's not as basic as going on a trip," said the brand.
"Put it in the mountains, near the ocean, or in a garden, and it immediately blends in with the surroundings, inviting you to a whole new life."
Made entirely of Japanese wood, the mono-pitched hut includes a nine-square-metre interior and a covered patio, measuring three square metres.
Sliding glass doors, originally designed for a shop, open to the outdoor space. A smaller window is placed on the rear wall to bring in natural light and aid ventilation.
The exterior is clad in wood charred black using the Japanese technique called shou sugi ban, which prolongs the life of the timber, and makes it more resistant to fire, insects and decay.
The house is built on a concrete foundation to protect against ground moisture, ensuring that the structure lasts a long time.
Inside, untreated Japanese cypress plywood lines the walls, and the floor is covered in mortar, offering a simple finish for owners to add their own touches.
"Even in dirt-prone environments, the floor can be used freely like an earthen floor," they said. "Since the floor surface is nice and smooth, cleaning is easy, and flooring or rugs can be laid anywhere to suit your taste."
The Muji Hut's price tag will cover all the materials needed for the construction as well as the costs of the project's contractor. The brand is yet to release a date for sale outside of Japan.
At the end of last year, Muji revealed the prototype for its latest prefab house, which it is testing by having a competition winner live in it rent-free.
Muji ranked 26 on Dezeen Hot List, an index of the 400 designers, architects and brands our audience most wanted to read about.
