The ambition was to create a contemporary interior using traditional construction and carpentry skills that the Edwardians themselves would recognise. Taking over two years, the guiding principle at each stage was to have a single spirit carry across the whole house, rather than old feel in contrast to new.

Despite many areas giving the appearance of being simply restored, every space was remodelled from scratch. The house had not been renovated in over one hundred years and was in considerable state of dilapidation. The entire interior was stripped back to brick walls, timber floor joists and studs. Clues and reusable material from the existing house were then taken as the starting point for the design of each floor, on a room by room basis, working in close collaboration with builder and client.

The project features new solid bespoke oak joinery, three new bathrooms with stone floors and a rear extension for the kitchen with reconstructed study above. The design was informed by detailed research into and appreciation of Edwardian domestic architecture.

The ground floor has a nobler treatment and bolder colour scheme. Rooms are characterised by fibrous plaster covings, high ceilings and large bifold doors connecting drawing and living rooms.

As you rise towards more private areas of the house, the colours become calmer and at the same time, the design more playful. In a nod to Edwardian architecture and its embrace of fantasy, we opened the attic levels to expose the concealed roof truss work. This creates a variety of new volumes and gives the top floors a sense of an overall roof folding down over and enclosing the rooms. These new attic spaces provide both separate play and/or retreat rooms for both children and adults and the chance to glimpse long and surprising views between rooms.

The external scope included replacement of all existing windows with new in matching timber profiles and both new and refurbished stained-glass windows. We undertook full repair and repointing of the brick facades, new slate roofing, new skylights giving views as far as the City of London and new hard landscaping to front and rear. Guiding the external restoration was the ambition that all new works would be invisible from the street upon completion, sensed but never obvious.

Architecture office DROO has added four apartments atop a London warehouse building, with flexible interiors designed to facilitate co-living, home-schooling or working from home.

The project involved slotting two glazed storeys behind the parapet of City Approach, a six-storey brick Edwardian warehouse building located in a conservation area in Islington.

Two devices harness thermals to facilitate the drying of cloth, one in the air of tropical climates, the other in warm kitchens. One is found in Singapore – rows of externally mounted pipe sockets holding painted bamboo poles, often on the façades of public housing blocks. The other is in Glasgow – internal, ceiling-mounted, a block, sash-cord, cast iron lift frame and individual timber laths, found in Victorian tenement dwellings. In Singapore, the temperature and conditions are consistent; in Glasgow they are variable. In Singapore, the device is fixed publicly to the exterior of the building; in Glasgow it is located within, in a central part of the home.

Positioned at the interface between interior practice and philosophies of conservation, the work concerns the future of historic interiors where space, time, materials and people are intertwined in an unfolding process. A decaying timber joist is used to examine the flow between the body and the place that it inhabits, to position the interior as an agent of change, a space that re-figures human and non-human relationships, where the material of the human body and the natural and cultural world are coincident as investigative tools for the historic interior.

Moving composition for layered, translucent interior surfaces, derived from quantum mechanics, nano, and string theory considerations Barry Martin, 2018 Print, 841 x 1189 mm

This print represents a stream of decisions made by a future family for their daily needs. Taking inspiration from the subatomic actions, operations, and linked movements these commands will generate, this visualises the act of becoming, streaming processes that would be seen on and in futuristic surfaces. Rhythmic flow-waves are suggested as being embedded into membrane-type surfaces, acting as conduits to transport the commands, and forming the boundary lines of their habitations. Reconfigurations of interior spaces in size, shape, characteristics, and functional attributes will become the norm, using new technologies derived from quantum mechanics, nano, and string theories. Transformative and deformative structuring processes using subatomic particle streaming will be decisive in characterising the needs of advanced future societies.

Barry authored a chapter in Interior Futures titled “Future Tense: Horizontal Inclining Designing”.

Non-normative Urban Occupations Rochus Urban Hinkel, 2018 Photos, 2 x 148 x 210 mm

Occupying urban spaces and creating non-normative situations through performative actions are explored here as students perform actions framed as both artistic experiments and political actions. Alternative methods are developed to enable an understanding of local urban conditions, including the built environment as well as the social fabric, through the exposure of one’s embodied subjectivity in an act of public occupation.

Re-Bodiment Celeste Camilleri, Jordan Edge, Stephanie Siu, 2018 3D printed seeds, audio

Re-bodiment is a speculative museum collection. With preservation of the collection made a fundamental priority, the identity of each object is embedded into a Seed Host and mapped onto a sonic identity, giving each object a new physical and digital expression. This is achieved using CRISPR gene transfer technology to insert identity data into third-party hosts, expanding the possibilities for their survival. When the results are removed from the original artworks, the collection retains an experiential form over a different timespan. This collection was displayed at the Royal Academy, London in December 2018.

This was part of a project run by Interior Futures editors Harriet Harriss and Kevin Walker.

Technological Nature Daria Jelonek, 2017 Moving image

What if your shower could cause a rainbow, you could encounter the Northern Lights in your fridge, or observe the sunset in an artificial window? Technological Nature investigates the imitation, re-creation and augmentation of natural phenomena in everyday life, to create a new mindset for the hybrid of traditional biophysical nature and the nature of technology. The project results from my experience of living with objects that artificially imitate natural light – such as artificial sun clocks, rainbow machines and aurora machines – for a period of six months, in order to explore their nature.

Me Time 4.0 Mimi Kim, 2018 Moving image

To counter sensory overload, this artistic research project aimed to align the mind and body back into balance by reducing sensory stimuli. This was a series of self-experiments using eccentric methods of REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) to alleviate the effects of hyperthyroidism (a hormone/stress-related disease) and hypersensitivity. Being isolated while experiencing contemplation and self-reflection, remaining aware of the external world, is employed as a form of mindfulness.

Two Percent Of Spaces You Could Possibly Encounter Alex Taylor, 2019 Installation

Two Percent Of Spaces You Could Possibly Encounter is a live scene categorisation system built on top of MIT’s 10-million-image-strong Places database. A live feed is taken from the camera, run through a neural network trained on the dataset, then filed into one of 365 spatial categories, ranging from amusement parks to operating theatres. Responding to the claim that the Places dataset can account for 98% of spaces a user could possibly encounter, viewers are encouraged to interact with the camera feed in order to reveal the quirks, blind-spots and biases that can be found in the software.

This work is based on the short story by Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez, who popularised the genre of magical realism. Light is like water is the tale of two children who discover that, by breaking light bulbs from the lamps in their house, they can flood the place with light. They dive between the living room furniture and sail between islands in the house when their parents are not home. Based on the metaphysical concept of magic developed by Federico Campagna in his 2018 book Technic and Magic, the magical nature of this scene signals the existence of a dimension beyond the one we perceive.

In this gallery space of interior futures, surfaces hold fragmented memories, and spaces have materials with human qualities. Measuring time into eternity, of kaleidoscopic sounds with a rhythmic fluidity and systematic repetitive structure, clear harmonious melodies create a slow process of transformation.

Psychotropic House Project led by Caroline Yan Zheng, 2018

The following works were created by RCA students for a #mood research group led by Caroline Yan Zheng. Inspired by J.G Ballard’s story “The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista”, students explored programmable materials, affective sensing and modes of interaction to enact sensual, mysterious, and emotionally-charged experiences. When the “smart home” moves from being merely responsive to acquiring affective qualities, it will become a powerful mediator of human experience and relations, creating unpredictable or even psychotropic outcomes in “emotionally intelligent” future interiors.

What is the essence of life without language? Those tiny, imperceptible movements of the body that we read like a book, life deconstructed to its bear minimum. Then to give to that a platform, technology’s cuboid foot soldier of the graphical user interface, the pixel. With these elements I resurrected – through old, abandoned materials, each containing their own story – a new emotional species.

Reflecting on Ballard’s “The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista,” I wondered how smart materials, such as the “plastex” in the story, could become emotionally haunted artefacts, “echoing every shift of mood” of inhabitants, as he described. Touch as an emotional conductor, combined with thermochromic materials as a revealing, prophetic medium might allow reading one’s ethereal self. Collecting fragments of stones and cement in London, I create a parallel between the reality of analogue materials and the science fiction prospect of an emotionally and technologically intelligent material.

In 2019, we know that the privacy we took for granted is a thing of the past. Soon, we become an entirely new, predictable public, susceptible to the regulation of decision making, vulnerable to emotional monitoring and manipulation. We believed that self-tracking of the skin was for introspection and personal transformation, but perhaps we should have learnt the first time around. The monitoring of bodily changes reveals the effects of thought, feeling and emotion as physical properties. This work explores the skin as the interface for affection between humans.

Naturally, our bodies need contact with others; a reduction of the hormone oxytocin is linked to depression. But more and more, we use surrogates to replace physical contact. Our generation has a future shaped by technology, especially Artificial Intelligence. As a result of technological overload, some might say humanity is going through an identity crisis, due to the dilemma posed by having a body in a digital world. Technology is positioned as an alternative to materiality and reality, and this transfer can profoundly affect our emotions. The creatures we have created are, like surrogates of physical bodies, intended to relieve you from the need for physical contact.

Do we attach a feeling to an autonomous agent if it contains a little bit of ourselves? Breathe life into Puff Bot and it copies your biorhythms. Puff Bot attempts to capture the ineffable qualities of fungal life – the tiny reflexes of movement that propel new life into the environment, the action of breath made visible.

The houses in Ballard’s 1962 story “The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista’’ develop a soul of their own, and inanimate objects inhabit unexpected characteristics. This piece momentarily confronts viewers with the sensation of an external presence or “other”.
