honestly i think about sci fi costume design constantly it kinda falls into different broad categories based on their goals there are like the completely inconceivable costumes things that are so divorced from normal form or function that it clearly delineates between that and current fashion often used to show some level of luxury or relaxation or some kind of image focused society or to simply be as different as possible push the bounds of costume design for fun and sometimes can also be used as a way to almost take the power away from a heavily militaristic society or something have them wearing things that look nothing like our idea of uniforms and then there are things that stick close to a sleek minimalism sometimes using specific fabrics and cuts for a futuristic style trying to balance designs i think seen as less serious while also trying to build up a distinct looking world and then things that feel nearly identical to our current clothing often to try and be taken seriously or a very militarized story or a very labor focused story i guess often its about how far from normal function do clothes go you know its like a spectrum and idk i feel like people really throw too much away trying to be taken more seriously i feel like if nothing else u should try and eschew normal average modern clothing so that you can say more with it when you do use it like so many heavily militarized stories and costumes like go for very bland simplistic civilian clothing rather than idk can we mess with fabrics a bit just give things weird necklines like anything because u could then make the military uniforms stand out say something as a concept they are something that evolves on a far slower scale than average fashion like military dress uniforms are actively trying to look like stuff thats 200+ years old you know so clearly this could continue in a sci fi world what are they actively trying to hearken back to maybe modern army fatigues have become mythologized and feel like napoleonic uniforms might look to us so like why not have that distinction like why not have certain clothes pop out more and ask ourselves why they look so modern to us when everything else looks a bit off or like stories where characters are laborers often wearing coveralls and jumpsuits which often is the perfect confluence of like nasa uniforms being coveralls and like mechanics but idk i do often wish they would mess around with different fabrics or adapted more to realities of like working in space or something like velcro strips if theyre working and lose gravity or something u know like lets say more about what their work is what is different what remains the same you know!!
