really cool space pictures masterpost
Protip: if you type “/zoomable” after the url of ALMOST any Hubble image on spacetelescope.org, you’ll be taken to a zoomable version of it. if that doesnt work put a different lowercase letter after the numbers in the url and try again
Protip 2: in the zoomable images, press shift to zoom in, ctrl to zoom out. move around with the arrow keys. ta da, no mouse needed.
Protip 3: this is a long post. press J to skip it and go to the next post. you may need to press it a few times if your dash is slow to load
disclaimer: i get my right and left mixed up way more than makes sense for someone whos age is a 2 digit number, so try to bear with me, and feel free to message me if you have questions about what im talking about in regards to an image
i cuss lots in this btw cus space is amazing
a * means that one or both dimensions of the image are a 5+ digit number of pixels so you can zoom in a TON!
a + means its stuff put up by One Person, not an agency or association so its prolly not available for individual use. respect copyrights!
Okay! here we go,
nebulae
cat’s eye nebula, my personal fave nebula. theres three images of this one, ill link them in order of the amount of sky they cover from least to greatest –> here, here, here
bubble nebula. i strongly recommend zooming in on the various purple sparkles (i know theyre not really sparkles but theyre sparkles so im calling them sparkles) because they look hella cool –> here
n90 / ngc602 (its got 2 names cus most stuff in space has multiple names) its got tonsa sparkly looking babby stars, theyre a really pretty blue –> here
* tarantula nebula!! its pretty af and its the brightest star forming region in our galaxy which is fucking boss–> here
butterfly nebula, gorgeous white dusty stuff that looks vaguely like river rapids in a splorshy way –> here
* carina nebula - star birth!! plus a really big image which means ZOOM FOREVER –> here
monkey head nebula with big sporkles –> here
ngc 1999 is so goddamn fucking cool!! its like, if u used lilac paper to make a valentine, its the paper you cut the heart out of. except the heart is sideways –> here
* the veil nebula! its so cool and rainbow i love it so much!!! like seriously it is so pretty, it has every goddamn colour –> here
s106! its got sorta light aqua dust clouds and is gorgeous. –> here
look at this spooky spiral! it’s the nebula around LL pegasi which is a binary star system. they think it’s caused by the star system doing the nebula thing or something? ive never learned about nebulae formed from binary stars before so i cant extrapolate anything concrete from the dumbed down version in the image description :/ but anyways its got a really gay sparkle in the foreground too so thats also cool! –> here
red rectangle. not a lot of rectangles in space. cool. –> here
the hourglass nebula, a literal actual eye –> here
* cassiopeia A which is a boss af supernova remnant with very big and lorge sporkles –> here
galaxies
* of course we gotta do the 1.5 billion pixel image of Andromeda, currently the largest Hubble image as of 3/10/17 –> here
* sombrero galaxy (my fave galaxy) which looks like agate imo. i specifically recommend zooming in on that big sparkle in the bottom right-ish –> here
* the pinwheel galaxy, which was the largest Hubble image a while ago, i think back in 2006. or maybe its the largest image that shows a whole entire galaxy?? im unsure. –>  here
m82 its got lots of star birth and looks vaguely like an explosion on a mirror –> here
ESO381-12 which reminds me of a flower –> here
Centaurus A which my friend said was their aesthetic and tbh i agree –> here
* m81, its cool cus u can see a bunch of younger (blue) stars on the bottom edge of the dusty part –> here
ngc 4522 which is literally moving so goddamn fast that it’s shedding dust. ngc 4522 @ the rest of the virgo supercluster: lol eat my dust –> here
star clusters/misc
v838 mon, which is just neato –> here and then this view here shows how the stars brightness has increased over time. here is another view of it. man this thing is gorgeous. i lov it.
westerlund 2 its gorgeous omg. its not a Huge image but its on the larger side of these images so good to check it out ayy –> here
omega centauri star cluster - this is rly pretty i like it –> here
eta carinae, this one isnt very high quality but it was released in 1991 so its hella old and i think its rly interesting to look at older Hubble images –> here
abell 2218!!! it has gay sparkles near the bottom right and upper left corners and it showcases gravitational lensing!!! i lov it tbfh –> here
this one picture of two of the shoemaker-levy-9 impact sites!! shoemaker levy 9 was so gr9 cus it helped the Space Nerds figure out more about the composition of jupiter –> here
rs puppis which is a cepheid variable star! cepheid variables are hella cool because (a) the first discovered cepheid variables were catalogued by henrietta leavitt whos the Coolest Ever and (b) they helped us figure out distances that were too far for us to determine with parallax!! –> here
47 tucanae / ngc 104 which is tbh just rly pretty. lots of sporkles. –> here
trumpler 16, an open star cluster in the carina nebula. yes, thats its literal name. im not making this up. this is a good image cus its tol af –> here
AURORAS ON JUPITER FUCK YEAH its a combo of UV and visible so idk if u can see them normally but WHATEVER ITS COOL AS FUCK –> HERE
fomalhaut & fomalhaut b, which the description is Useful so im not linking a zoomable version. –> here
these two pics of ngc 6397 which might just be the same thing flipped????? idk theyve got the same dimensions but wildly different urls and were released like a year apart?? but anyways this thing looks like actual jewels in space so thats hella cool –> here and here
ngc 602 with its softly glowing magenta orbs and blue space jewels, and which is already on this post in the nebulae category but this is a diff pic and theyre both pretty pics so w/e –> here
other websites with space pics
pics of the surface of mars!! lov it! theyre so pretty wtf –> here
the sun! this site is hella cool cus its got so many versions of each picture –> here
every. single. goddamn. picture. from the apollo missions. –> here
the website for the STEREO satellites, which, before they lost contact with one of the satellites in 2014, took pictures of the WHOLE SUN AT ONCE! (im really sad about the one they lost contact with tho, theres more info on the site. they hope they can regain contact with it and i hope so too) –> here
pluto (:\) –> here
voyager stuff –> here
+ this dude who just takes pictures of things –> here
+ another dude who takes pics of stuff, this time featuring a rly old website –> here
+ another dude who still seems to be pretty active as of 3/10/17 so thats a plus –> here
this one website i found???? “luna” is moon, “sistema solare” is solar system, “profondo cielo”  is deep sky, and “sentieri stellari” only has two pics so im not worryin about it –> here
you can find more by googling “every single picture ever taken by___” or “pics of ___’s surface???” or “best amateur space photographers of [year]” and that sort of thing.
yo if you have more space pics pls add on to this post lmao
one last thing, a self indulgent pic of my fave messier object, m73, cus im a hipster or something and nobody else cares much about it –> here
