putting selina in the dceu: the bat solo film
** this is a subplot for the larger scheme of the film, woven as scenes into the movie. it’s a plot device meant to highlight the complexity of the bat’s relationship to his crusade, to his rogues, and to his love life.
01. WE BEGIN WITH A SLEEP DEPRIVED BAT. he’s embroiled in a homicide case he cannot solve; mass murders of young brunettes across butcher’s block in the east end. he hasn’t slept in days. that night, he’s in the process of taking down a gang of criminals in the near crime alley when he hears the familiar, feminine laugh of the feline fatale. he stops, mid-attack, to make sure it’s real. he hasn’t seen her in years. but if he were to find her anywhere, it’d be in her neighborhood. and if she were to come back, it’d be now, when her girls were in danger.    ( come and chase me, bat ! )   he takes off after the sound of her voice, chasing shadows rooftop after rooftop, only to find himself alone. [ ... ]
02. HE’S IN THE MANOR NOW. they’re still working on turning it into the hall of justice. he’s in the middle of talking to diana when he hears the same laughter from the old kitchen. a raised hand asks for a moment and now he’s walking towards the kitchen. he can hear barks, the scrambling of barefeet as they climb his counters with ease.      ( titus, no ! bruce ! )      more laughter. when he walks in, he finds it empty. diana comes up behind him, a worried hand on his shoulder -- you should rest. he shrugs her off. they have work to do. [ ... ]
03. MORE GIRLS DEAD. he wants to solve this case, but everything is slipping from his fingers. he misses his sons. he misses his dogs. he misses her. he pours himself a drink while sitting in the darkness of his room.         ( you shouldn’t drink. not if you’re not going to share. )         he’s used to the sound of her voice and the absence of her body by now. he breathes out a laugh through his nose. he doesn’t turn. he drinks again. [ ... ]
04. IN THE BATCAVE. his eyes are bloodshot from staring at the screen for too long. why does it have to be this case that takes him so long to solve? why does it have to be the one case in years that reminds him too much of her? he closes his eyes and he can feel her hands slipping over his shoulders, rubbing at the tension there like they always do. lips come to tickle his ear with her breath, her long black curls by grazing his head.        ( come back to bed, bat. i promise to make it worth your while. )         he opens his eyes again. the only sound is the water of the save. the buzzing of the computer. rubbed eyes. he’s got to solve this. [ ... ]
05. THE GOTHAM KNIGHTS MOCK HIM. his t-shirt. her t-shirt, at this point. it hangs where her clothes used to, stained with residual red lipstick around the collar from slipping it over a made-up face. she was always done-up. always beautiful.        ( hey, what time is it ? )        he looks over and he sees her in his bed, in his shirt. short locks sticking out in a wild array, her eyes  and her voice clouded in sleep. it lasts a moment, the memory. and it’s gone. and the shirt, collecting dust in his closet, lacks the wrinkles that used to form as it clung to her body. he should throw it out. he should move on. he closes the closet instead. [ ... ]
06. HE THINKS HE’S SOLVED IT. he’s angry and tired. he feels as though he’s failed, having taken this long. he’s in the east end, in the heart of the crime. he’s sleep deprived. he’s irrational. he makes mistakes. his grapple line is cut. he falls, and finally, he sleeps. when he wakes, she’s there. she’s murmuring to alfred and pressing cool towels to his forehead. there’s a dull pain at the back of his head and a sharp pain on the left side of his torso. he can’t see. his vision is unfocused. it’s dark. he fades in and out. [ ... ]
07. HE WAKES. she’s there, again. asleep, on her hand, slouched against his arm-chair. she wears exhaustion as well as she wears black. he’s tired of seeing her. tired of his eyes deceiving him, his ears, his mind. but then she wakes and she sees him. hey, bruce.... she sits up. he takes note that her clothes are new. her ring is new. this isn’t a memory. [ ... ]
08. SHE FORCES HIM TO STAY IN BED. he can’t be pretending like nothing is wrong when his body is crumbling. she tells him she’s returned because of the murders. she’s lying. he knows it. she knows it. she pretends she doesn’t. she pretends to care about the ring on her finger. they speak, they apologize. rebuild broken bridges and hold onto broken fences. a thousand questions are left unasked. a thousand more unanswered. after, they sit in silence, but for the first time in years, they sit together. [ ... ]
09. ON A ROOFTOP. they’re getting closer to solving the case. he’s gotten closer than he has in weeks, and he likes to think it’s because he has her on his side now. no one knows the east end like selina does. he forgets how good it is to work with someone. and when they fight side-by-side, he wears a small smile. [ ... ]
10. MINUTES AFTER THEY SOLVE IT. they’re exhausted, both physically and emotionally. they’re on their way back to the cave, the case is no longer between them as buffer. the silence is tense. they can feel it stretch and stretch and stretch until it snaps. and they’re on each other because they need each other because they breathe each other until they are each other. and after they fall apart, she wears the shirt again. and her ring is gone. and her hair is messy. and her legs are tangled in his sheets. for a moment, he thinks it’s a memory again. but she wakes up and she finds him staring, and she offers him a sleepy smile and half-closed eyes, and a clumsy hand covers his face and she says, you gotta stop doing that, bat. it’s weird. [ END. ]
inspired by the final scene of the entire history of you from black mirror.
