A Babysitting Misadventure
Rating: K+ for all the fluff
Synopsis: Momo Hinamori didn’t quite know what she was in for when she was tasked to take care of Ichika.
Characters/Pairings: Hitsuhina (of course!), a little Renruki and our favourite squad 10 vice captain Rangiku Matsumoto
Word Count: 2.5k
Author’s Notes: This is for @tinaillustrations as part of the Hitsuhina  2020 Exchange! I really was in between this and another fic but I love domestic fluff so this won out haha. It has been years since I have written fanfiction so I hope you enjoy it! I know I’m a little rusty but I cannot wait to share more with the Hitsuhina community! :)
-----
Momo Hinamori was having a good day. She had finished the work that Hirako-taicho had left her before he went to visit Hiyori-san in the Living World. She was almost done reading the book that Nanao had let her borrow. And it wasn’t even past noon.
She stretched her arms in front of her. “I can’t wait to take a break!” She was just about to get started on another pile of documents when all of a sudden the door crashed open—Renjii stood panting, with a crazed expression and a baby carrier in his hand.
“Hinamori!” His eyes filled with relief. “I am so glad you’re here!”
The brown-haired girl walked up to him. “Abarai-kun, what’s wrong? Why are you out of breath?” She bent down to look at baby Ichika who was sound asleep, in deep contrast to her father.
“Rukia—emergency— mission—,” he huffed, “distress call—I need to go!” He only had the strength to force out short phrases as he seemed at the point of collapsing.
Momo looked at him with great sympathy. “You must go then!” She looked down at Ichika. “But why do you need me…?”
He grabbed her shoulders. “You’re a girl— you can take care of her!”
“What!” Momo exclaimed. “Abarai-kun!” But it was too late, the red headed vice-captain had already shunpoed away. Only baby Ichika fast asleep in her carrier remained as proof that the last 2 minutes really occurred.
The petite vice-captain sighed in exasperation, her side bangs fluttering away from her face.
“Mou…what am I going to do now?”
---
Momo wasn’t worried—yet. She had spent some time with playing with Ichika when both Renjii and Rukia were around. However, she had never taken care of the baby by herself. Glancing down at the carrier she placed on a seat next to her desk, Momo felt an apprehension in the pit of her stomach.
Well, Ichika-chan is still sleeping, so I should take advantage of the opportunity to work.
Momo busied herself and was in the midst of starting the third pile when a high pitch wail spooked her out of her chair.
“Oh no, Ichika!” Momo picked up the crying baby, immediately trying to console her. She hopped from side to side, in attempt to soothe her but Ichika did not quiet. She quickly looked around in the back of the carrier for anything that would help but couldn’t find anything. Ichika continued to wail and Momo felt her heart break.
“Mou, I need help!” At her wits end, Momo grabbed the carrier in one hand and ran out of the office. She was sure that she looked like a comical sight with a crying baby in tow, but she was determined to find someone to help.
However, as she made it through the divisions, she kept on hitting dead ends. At the first division, Nanao was out on errands, delivering paperwork for the upcoming meeting. At the third division, Captain Rose answered the door with a wary glance at the crying baby, but informed her that Kira was out on a mission. Momo had then stopped by the fourth division but Isane was out in the fields doing healing training.
And even though Momo was slowing down, Ichika continued to cry loudly, inciting shinigami to look at the two with pity. How could one small baby have so much energy to cry? She was so tired that she felt like she could collapse right then and there from all the running.
“Hinamori?”
Momo turned. “Rangiku-san!” The blonde was coming out of her quarters, hair unkempt and rubbing her eyes from sleep. Momo had never seen Matsumoto so not put together—but she was the only person so far who seemed to be available to help. “I am so glad to see you!” Momo exclaimed.
“Well, I can’t say I’m glad to hear you!” Matsumoto covered her ears. “Why’s Ichika-chan crying?”
“I don’t know!” Momo cried. “I’ve been trying to calm her down but nothing is working! Abarai-kun left me with just her carrier so I can’t even do anything!” To add to the point, Ichika seemed to cry even louder.
“Well that won’t do,” Rangiku muttered. “Hmm…I think I have something that might help.” She disappeared and Momo could hear some noises coming from inside. Shortly after Matsumoto appeared with a baby bottle full of milk. “Here, I found some milk in the fridge inside.”
Momo took the bottle gratefully but stopped. “Why do you have a baby bottle?” she asked dubiously.
“It was for a drinking game,” Matsumoto responded dismissively. Momo raised her eyebrow but thought better to ask further. She gestured the bottle to Ichika who eagerly latched on and drank, closing her eyes to sleep again.
Momo sighed in relief. “Ahh, it worked! Thank you so much Rangiku-san!” But Momo looked up and the blonde was already gone. Momo would have been insulted if she weren’t so relieved that Ichika had finally quieted down.
Knowing that there was only one more person she could ask for help, she quickly set out with the sleeping baby in tow.
---
Toushiro Hitsugaya was having a decent day. He slept well the night before and had woken up early to train. He had already completed his stacks of paperwork and was reviewing the report for his meeting with Captain Commander later in the day. It was also far more productive than he could say for his vice-captain who was conveniently late to work though it was far past noon.
He was just skimming the report when he heard the door slide open quickly.
“Hitsugaya-kun! Would it be alright if I stayed here?” Momo asked.
“I have to work,” he responded, not missing a beat and continued reading.
“But Hitsugaya-kun, I need your help!” At this, Toushiro looked up and was surprised to see how frazzled his childhood friend looked. Her hair stuck out in a disarray and she had an urgent look in her eyes. Then he noticed the sleeping baby in her arms.
“Why do you have Ichika?”
“Abarai-kun had to go help Rukia-san on her mission! He left Ichika-chan to me but didn’t give me any of her toys or baby bottles! She started to cry and I tried to soothe her but she wouldn’t stop—only until she drank something! Now she’s asleep but I don’t know when she’ll wake up next!” she exclaimed, clearly at her limit.  “I’ve been holding her for so long that I haven’t been able to use the restroom!”
“You couldn’t have asked anyone else to help?” He raised an eyebrow, not used to seeing her so out of sorts.
“I tried! I really did!” Momo cried out. “Hirako-taicho went to the living world, Kira’s on a mission, Nanao-san was busy with paperwork and I asked Rangiku-san.” She sighed dejectedly. “But she left me.”
“Why am I not surprised?” Toushiro responded dryly. Momo looked at him pleadingly, to which he sighed. “Fine, you can stay here.”
She felt an immense wave of relief wash over her. “Yes! Thank you so much Shiro-chan!”
“Hinamori! Enough with that nick name!” he grumbled, crossing his arms, looking off to the side.
“I’m sorry Hitsugaya-kun,” she looked up at him through her eye lashes, with the full intention of softening his annoyance. “Thank you for letting me stay here.” She smiled sweetly for extra effort knowing that her childhood friend could never stay mad at her for too long.
Toushiro’s cheeks warmed up. “Whatever, you’re welcome” he muttered.
Then it hit her. “Ah, Hitsugaya-kun! Can you hold her for a second? I’m going to go use the restroom!”
“Me?” he sputtered. “Hinamori, I have never held an infant in my life.”
She was already handing the sleeping Ichika to the white-haired captain’s reluctant open arms. “Don’t worry! You’ll get the hang of it! Just make sure to support her neck and let her head rest on our shoulder…and hold your arm underneath.” Momo adjusted his arms and hands. “There! You’re good to go!”
Toushiro was most certainly not comfortable at all. He looked like he was staring at a tiny hollow on his shoulder, his turquoise eyes filled with apprehension.
“Hinamori, I don’t think this is a good idea…” He looked up and realized she was already gone. He sighed and sat down on the couch, making sure to watch baby Ichika who was fast asleep despite a seemingly uncomfortable position.
It really was the first time that he had seen a baby so close. He adjusted his arms so he could see her face clearly. She really does look like Kuchiki...
Toushiro remembered how enamored Hinamori and Matsumoto had been with the baby when she was just born. They had all visited the squad 13 vice-captain after she had given birth and was resting at home. Abarai had sat behind her the whole time, supporting her up on the futon. Toushiro couldn’t believe how wrinkled the baby looked, but both Abarai and the young Kuchiki’s gazes down were nothing short of full of love. He glanced to the side to see Momo staring at the trio affectionately, and Toushiro couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking.
“Hitsugaya-kun?”
He turned to see Hinamori’s face looking down at Ichika with the same look as before. She had settled herself nicely next to him and was smiling to herself. “You got it!” she whispered gently. Momo smiled up at him. “See, I told you, you could do it!”
Toushiro felt his ears go hot. “H-Here you take her!” He lifted the baby off of him and onto Momo who quickly opened her arms. “Ahh, be careful Hitsugaya-kun!” Momo adjusted her position, but it was no use as Ichika started to stir. A look of confusion and fear passed by her face as she didn’t recognize the unfamiliar surroundings. Ichika’s bottom lip trembled and Momo felt the baby’s reiatsu hitch before she proceeded to wail again—and if possible, louder than before.
“Shiro-chan, I don’t know what to do!” Momo cradled Ichika in her arms, turning from side to side quickly in hopes to calm the baby down. But it was futile as the small baby howled, tears streaming down her chubby cheeks.
“Ichika,” he spoke with quiet authority.
The baby opened its violet eyes as Toushiro leaned over her and started moving his index finger, almost as if he were writing in the air. A blue light started to glow around his hand and suddenly dancing figures of ice emerged. Ichika’s wailing quieted to a coo as she watched the ice figures dance through the air and flutter down in front of her.
Momo stared in awe at Toushiro sitting next to her. Though they were shoulder to shoulder and he was releasing his reiatsu, she couldn’t feel the bite of the cold. She knew it had to do with him controlling his power so it wouldn’t harm her or the baby—that thought warmed her inside.
The ice sprites moved closer to settle on her arms, walking up to move closer to Ichika before disappearing in snow sparkles. The baby gurgled in excitement and reached a little fist to touch the snow.
She then pushed herself forward suddenly and Momo had to tighten her hold so she wouldn’t slip out of her arms. Toushiro sensed this and draped an arm on the couch behind the petite vice-captain so that she and Ichika were supported by his chest. At the back of her mind she registered she was so close to her childhood friend that she could feel the tickle of his hair on her cheek.
The show continued with Toushiro conjuring new characters and figures that enchanted baby Ichika with wonder. The exhaustion from her crying soon slowly overcame her as her eyelids fluttered close again.
“How did you do that Shiro-chan?” Momo whispered softly, as to not disturb the quietness of the moment.
Toushiro shrugged his shoulders, eyes still focused on the now drowsy baby. “I figured that Kuchiki-fuukutaicho would have created something out of ice for Ichika whenever they played together—knowing her penchant for Chappy.” He let out a smile.  “She probably just misses her mom.”
“You’re amazing Shiro-chan.”
He turned to retort at her, but stopped at the look of admiration in her eyes.
“Hinamori…”
The two friends both looked down when Ichika started mumbling “Kaa-chan” before settling into a deep snooze. They both unconsciously smiled together.
Momo don’t know how long she and Toushiro sat there watching in quiet fascination at the sleeping baby in her arms. They both didn’t say anything, too wary of disturbing this rare peaceful moment. And though the neither of them had ever dealt with a newborn baby like this, it just felt right.
Momo was so focused on holding Ichika she didn’t notice Toushiro curl his arm around her to tuck her closer to him and that he moved his face towards her’s.
“Captain?”
The two broke apart to see Matsumoto staring at them, which made Momo wonder how long she had been standing there. There was a knowing look in her grey-blue eyes and a soft smile on her face.
“We have to leave in a couple minutes for the meeting with Captain General Kyoraku.”
Toushiro cleared his throat and removed his arm from Momo, which she realized that she missed right away.
“Right, Matsumoto.” He looked away trying to regain his composure. “We’ll leave soon.”
“I should go as well,” Momo said softly, as to not wake baby Ichika and to avoid Toushiro and Matsumoto’s stares. “Thank you for your help Hitsugaya-kun.” She placed the sleeping child in the carrier before hurrying herself off the couch.  “I’ll see you both later,” she quickly said as she dashed out leaving the 10th division officers behind.
Once the fifth vice-captain left, Matsumoto turned around slowly with a smirk on her face and raised eyebrow. “Did you enjoy your time with Hinamori-chan?” her voice dripping with implications.
Toushiro straightened his captain’s robe before pushing himself up and brushed past Matsumoto into the hallway. “Let’s not be late Matsumoto,” he said ignoring her previous statement.
“Don’t think this is over Captain! We must discuss this afterwards! I want to hear all the details!”
“There’ll be no such thing,” he replied shortly.
“Well, I think you might want to considering what I have…”
He turned to her as she dropped her soul pager in his hand, walking past with a confident gait. She winked as she looked over her shoulder. “I think you’ll want to save that photo.”
In confusion, he looked down at the photo on the small screen and his turquoise eyes widened. For on the screen was an image of a smiling Momo, gazing adoringly at baby Ichika, tucked in Toushiro’s arms. What shocked him was the soft look on his face directed at Momo. Though there was plenty of room for them on the tiny couch, they were so close together that it looked like a young couple and their child—he could feel his ears heat up.
“Don’t worry Captain, I’ll send it to you later,” Matsumoto called sweetly.
Toushiro huffed. Not that he cared.
But she had better send that picture to him later.

Wano Country
41 years ago: start of the flashback, Oden becomes Daimyo of Kuri several years later
33 years ago: former Rocks pirates start recruiting. Kawamatsu, Inu and Neko join Oden
30 years ago: Oden joins WB and leaves Wano
28 years ago: Roger realizes he has a terminal disease, he goes to the twin capes to recruit Crocus and starts his last journey. Momonosuke is born
26 years ago: Roger is shown the road poneglyph from Zou, Hiyori is born
25 years ago: Roger and his crew reach Raftel, they then disband
24 years ago: Roger turns himself in to the Marines and is executed
23 years ago: Ryuma's grave is robbed
20 years ago: Wano falls to Orochi and Kaido, Oden is executed
Now my prediction:
Chapter 965: We will come to know more about Toki. She will spark Odens interest in the void century and the stones. Sengoku said in chapter 957 that Oden was poached by Roger for his final voyage (not earlier then ?), so we can assume Oden spent 2 years with WB, giving him the time to become division commander. The reason why Oden will leave WB is because he will be intrigued by Roger's goal in searching for the poneglyphs and info on the void century, unlike WB who is not interested in this matter. Roger himself got recently interested in the stones as he has reached the end of the road as indicated by the log pose. This is where he realized that he would need the information from the stones to reach the legendary island of Raftel (according to Inu, chapter 820). This is what is behind his motivation to start a final journey where he will go back to the start of Grand Line in search for all the poneglyphs he can find (I dont know if the distinct purpose of the road poneglyphs is widely known as noone has read them all in centuries. A lot of the tribes and kingdoms who guard the stones know nothing of what is written on them). It is hard to guess how much Toki herself knows about the void century (she might have fled from it at a very young age). Whatever she knows, she could decide not to tell much to Oden and Roger so that they can discover the truth by themselves at their own pace, much in the fashion Rayleigh  warned Robin about not rushing this matter back in Sabaody. A pregnant Toki (or already with a newborn Momo) will be brought back to Wano by WBs crew while Oden joins Roger on his last adventure. Izo will stay with WB. When Momo talks about meeting Roger (chapter 820) it seems like he met him once, he didnt grow up on Rogers ship. It is safe to assume Toki and Momo never went with Oden and Roger. As for how Roger will win Oden over, some people said it could be through a Davy Back Fight. That would honestly be a lot of fun but I dont know if it can fit in one chapter. I believe WB will be cool with Odens departure, he never really considered him an underling or his "son". We are 28 years in the past.
Chapter 966: Oden's journey with Roger. They go back to the twin capes to recruit Crocus, then to Skypiea where Oden will write the note on the sky island poneglyph for his captain. Oden is the only one who could write and  engrave it so (although Roger is somewhat capable of deciphering poneglyphs, as stated by Big Mom in chapter 853, I doubt he could write them). They will go to fishman island (maybe finding the joyboy stone along the way). They will reach Zou where the minks will show their road poneglyph to Roger and Oden. We might then learn more about the ancient alliance between the Kozukis and the Minks. They will then venture to Big Moms territory to steal her poneglyph. We are 26 years in the past.
Chapter 967: Next road poneglyph in line is located on Onigashima, it was there long before Kaido came. Oden will return to Wano with Roger for the first time in 4 years. He will reunite with Toki and Momo, who will also meet Roger. At this point Oden will father Hiyori. Oden will leave Inu and Neko behind on Wano as they sail again. Next part will not be shown in great detail, the Roger Pirates will take the remaining year to find the 4th road poneglyph and reach Raftel, completing their journey. They will then disband and vanish. We are 25 years in the past.
Chapter 968: Oden comes back to Wano with the firm intention to open its borders. Orochi became Shogun in the meantime (possibly after having poisoned the late Shogun and fabricated his will). Oden and Toki are probably the only two people who know what is really at stake with Wanos tradition of isolationism. We might learn there what is behind it from their perspective. Ryuma's grave is robbed by Moria. Orochi uses this as a bad omen to fearmonger the people of Wano into opposing Odens wish of opening the country. 3 years later, Kaido attacks Wano (he is in a secret alliance with Orochi). Hiw crew clashes against Oden and his retainers. We are 20 years in the past.
Chapter 969: Neither Kaido nor Oden can best one another. This is where Orochi comes into play. I think he will trick the red scabbards into being captured. As said by Kinemon in chapter 818, "he gave his life most admirably to save the lives of his servants". Also in chapter 920 when Kinemon tells the full story about Oden to Luffy and his crew, Luffy reacts by being horrified at "a dirty thing" Orochi did. My feeling is that Oden was never bested, Orochi blackmailed him into surrender with the lives of his retainers. This is also I believe at the root of the feud between Inu and Neko, as will be shown at this stage of the flashback. This should be the end of the flashback with a return to present day.
Also some food for thought I couldnt really tell elsewhere. Back in Zou Neko said Luffy was like Roger AND Oden when he could hear Zunisha but not be heard back. However Momo is able to talk to the elephant. This power might then come from the Toki side of his heritage. There were also theories rising about the houses associated with the moon (Kozuki, Amatsuki, Shimotsuki) that were very interesting. It got me thinking when I last saw the Kozuki crest. On the sides there are four symbols sticking out of the circle. This could refer to 4 allied clans to the Kozukis (Shimotsukis, Amatsukis, Minks and a 4th ?). This is just speculation. On the same crest you have an "orb" surrounded by 8 smaller balls. This could be tied to the theory that in the past the planet used to have many more moons (as suggested by the globe kept by the Ohara scientists). The central orb could represent the planet while the 8 smaller balls would stand for 8 moons. Last theory: Momo (with his control over Zunisha and maybe more) is an ancient weapon in his own right just like Shirahoshi. It is possible that Roger and his men were "too early" because you need the ancient weapons to be able to do anything about the whole lost century thing. At their time, Momo and Shirahoshi were too young or still not born thus why they felt they got there too early in time.

When Swimming Becomes Painful
Spoilers and whatever.
So, this anime is about swimming. Obviously. So, since this anime revolves around swimming, it makes sense that our main characters would have negative experiences with it at one point or another. In my rewatch of the anime, though, I’ve noticed that practically every character has found swimming painful at some point, not just the main characters.
Since swimming is something that all of the characters really love, I like the plot developments that cause them to not like it so much anymore. I don’t know if any of this makes sense, but hopefully it will as you read. I’m gonna start from the bottom up with the characters that barely had negative moments involving swimming, and I’ll end with the character that swam in pain for the longest time.
Hiyori Tono
Tumblr media
So, I think Hiyori is the only person on this list who found swimming painful for more indirect reasons than direct reasons. Those reasons would be Ikuya, obviously. To me, when watching Dive to the Future, it seemed like Hiyori wanted Ikuya to be the strongest swimmer in the world while, at the same time, recognizing that swimming was causing Ikuya pain. I’ll get to Ikuya later, so I’m not gonna talk about him much yet, but Hiyori ended up being in silent pain while watching Ikuya in pain.
I think that bled over into swimming itself every time Ikuya sank through the water and nearly drown. I realize I’m pushing it by putting Hiyori on this list, but I think that there’s something there that did cause Hiyori to find swimming painful for a little while. For the record, I think it was similar thing for Natsuya, but I’m not putting him on this list because I don’t think he connected it with swimming as much as Hiyori did.
Rei Ryugazaki
Tumblr media
I think Rei, Nagisa, Makoto, and Rin all felt pain watching Haru in pain during Eternal Summer, just like Hiyori did with Ikuya, but Rei also found swimming painful for personal reasons at one point. That would be around the time he asked Rin to teach him to swim.
When Rei started feeling like he was inferior to Nagisa and the rest, I think he had a short period where swimming at practice with them every day caused him pain. Of course, once he started to improve, that feeling went away, but for a little while, it was there.
Nagisa Hazuki
Tumblr media
I think the only time that Nagisa found swimming painful was in middle. And he didn’t really find swimming painful, but the idea of swimming was definitely painful for him. Considering the fact that swimming what would’ve made Nagisa the happiest at that time (as it’s the thing that always makes Nagisa happy), being deprived of it wasn’t the best for him.
In Eternal Summer, I imagine that some of those old feelings resurfaced when he thought his parents were going to keep him from swimming again. Thankfully, that didn’t happen, but it is sad that it almost did.
Asahi Shiina
Tumblr media
I guess Asahi’s experience was sort of similar to Rei’s in that practice became difficult for him for a while. Also, Asahi had similar feelings of inferiority after he saw Haru swim. I don’t think swimming in general became painful for him, but free definitely did. I suppose, for Asahi, that was enough, though.
It probably felt a lot more be all, end all to Asahi than it actually was. Either way, it couldn’t of been an easy few weeks.
Aiichiro Nitori
Tumblr media
Again, this is another story that’s sort of similar to Rei’s. I put Ai a little higher up on this list because I think the pain he put himself through mentally was pretty harsh. He spent a lot of time trying to get better at swimming, and the whole time, he didn’t really believe he could do it.
I don’t think it was until Sousuke decided to coach him that Ai really started believing that he could get stronger. Up until that point though, he was almost resigned to the idea that he would never get to swim in a relay with Rin.
Sousuke Yamazaki
Tumblr media
Sousuke and Ikuya are a lot alike I think, but I guess I should wait to make that full comparison until later. So, I think Sousuke had painful experiences with swimming even before Rin left. I’d say when he swam in the relay Rin, it caused those types of feelings for Sousuke because he didn’t used to be the type to swim with a team.
After Rin left, most of the rest of Sousuke’s time as a swimmer was spent feeling the absence of his best friend. Obviously, Sousuke did feel actual, literal pain because of his shoulder, but metaphorically, Sousuke felt it for a pretty long time.
Makoto Tachibana
Tumblr media
Makoto’s negative experiences with swimming happened in both middle and high school. In Starting Days, Makoto lost himself because he lost his reason for swimming. I think he even told Haru that being around him hurt because he didn’t know if he was swimming for Haru or for himself.
Again, in high school, Makoto struggled to figure out if he was cut out to be a professional swimmer or not. On both occasions, Makoto threw himself into swimming to help him figure it out. I think he lived Haru’s pain just as much as his own, as well. He’s since become a stronger person, though, so all of that was worth it.
Rin Matsuoka
Tumblr media
Well, I mean. Naturally Rin would be one of the top characters, right? There’s a lot I could explain here, but do I need to? He hit a wall in Australia, lost to Haru in middle school, and for most of his second year in high school, all he felt while swimming was pain.
He said over and over that he was going to quit swimming as well, which would’ve caused him more pain. In the end, Rin keeping with swimming and not quitting is the reason why he was able to heal. That and Haru, obviously.
Haruka Nanase
Tumblr media
Honestly, the only reason Haru isn’t the number one on this list is because he had more reprieves from the pain than the number one. Again, I don’t really think I have to explain, but I will. So, swimming has almost caused more pain to Haru than it hasn’t. That sounds really bad, but it’s kind of true, right?
When Rin left, he couldn’t get past swimming without him. In high school, realizing that he may never swim with Rin again also caused him pain. Then there’s the whole journey of self discovery he went through in high school where he couldn’t find his dream, and in university, Haru wondered if he should be swimming competitively at all. However, obviously, Haru’s highs outweigh the lows. Just like with all of these characters, the pain made them stronger.
Ikuya Kirishima
Tumblr media
Yo. Other than the end of Starting Days and the last half of Dive to the Future, Ikuya has always been in pain while swimming. I mean, obviously, when he was kid, he wasn’t in pain, but during most of his time in the anime, he was.
I think, for the most part, his distance from Natsuya was the main source of pain. Not that it was Natsuya’s fault, but had they been closer, Ikuya might not have felt so alone. When Asahi, Makoto, and Haru quit the swimming club, Ikuya must’ve felt like he had no one left. Everything we’ve seen in the anime can be attributed to Ikuya feeling alone: him nearly drowning twice, him hitting a wall in college, him being so angry and closed off, etc. It took nearly his whole life for him to get the closure he needed. Thankfully, now swimming is something hopeful for Ikuya instead of painful.
I don’t know if this post interested anyone, but hey. The concept of something you love causing you pain is always really interesting to me because I love plot devices like that, so I wanted to talk about the existence of it in Free! Thanks for reading! I’m not sure what I’m posting next, but I’ve had this on my mind for a while, so I’m glad it’s finally out there.

Good Enough
a yatori college AU
Chapter 23/?
AO3|ff.net
“I don’t wanna go to wooork.” Yato whined as he shut off the alarm on his phone and immediately buried his face into the crook of her neck.
She gave a small huff, cradling his head with her arm, “You have to. And I have to go back to my dorm and pack the last of my things so I can go home tomorrow…” She closed her eyes and grimaced at the thought of the endless list of questions and lectures that her mom had waiting for her.
“Not looking forward to that at all, huh?” His eyes flickered up to hers.
“I mean, I’m looking forward to it a little. It is home, you know?” She gave a small shrug of her shoulders, “I’m just not looking forward to all of the stress I know is coming.”
Pressing a gentle kiss against her jaw, he commented in a low voice, “If she’s already going to give you a ton of shit, you don’t have to say anything…”
“But it’s already been three months without saying anything and I told my big brother that I would.” Hiyori immediately contested, tilting her head towards him, “And it’ll just make it worse the longer I wait.”
She felt him let out a breath of air against her skin, “Yeah, I guess.”
“Besides, I don’t want to keep it a secret.” She continued, making a sour face, “It’s just her initial reaction I don’t want to deal with.”
“Won’t it be an ongoing thing, though?” He questioned seriously with a small frown appearing on his lips, “Since I don’t exactly live up to her standards and all that.”
Hiyori reached her hand up to her face and ran her fingers through her bangs, “Probably. But like Ami-chan said to me a while ago, it’s my life so… ultimately it’s my decision and hopefully if I can just ignore her long enough, she’ll just get over it…eventually.” Her voice lowered, full of uncertainty as she finished.
“Well, you’re right about it being your own life.” He pressed another kiss against her cheek before starting to untangle himself from her, somewhat sitting up, “I’m not so sure about the other part.” As the air started to flow into the pocket he created, he shivered dramatically, “Fuck, it’s cold.”
“Yeah, but we’ve gotta get up.” She pushed her knee into his thigh, nodding upward.
“Fine, but let’s go somewhere for breakfast where it’s already warm.” He kept his arms wrapped around himself as he got out from the futon and stood up, shivering dramatically.
Letting out a small yawn first, Hiyori moved to get out of bed as well, “I definitely won’t say no to that.” Before she even realized he had moved, she felt Yato wrap his arms around her and squished her against his chest, “Are you really that cold?”
She felt him shake his head, “No, this is just because I won’t see you till after the new year.”
“Oh,” She parted her lips in surprise before returning the hug and resting her head on against the side of his face, “Guess you’re right.”
“And I know you hate PDA.” He added, speaking into her ear.
Hiyori rolled her eyes, “It’s rude!”
“I think people can get past just a short kiss.” He countered back and she pulled away from him just enough to look at him.
“As if you would ever keep it at just that.” She gave him a doubtful look.
Yato looked back at her, taking a moment to form a response. Giving a smug grin, he leaned in towards her until their noses touched, “You’re just that addicting, Hiyori. But also,” He moved towards her neck and kissed her there, a tingling feeling quickly taking over her body, “I seem to remember you being the one to initiate things quite a few times, including last night. So I’m not the only guilty one here.”
Words disappeared for a short time, her breath caught in her throat and her lips parted. Finally, she answered breathlessly with a small laugh, “Y-you’re right.”
He continued kissing a path down to the neckline of her borrowed shirt, suckling at her skin briefly before mumbling, “Now I really wish I didn’t have to go to work.”
“We don’t have time, so yeah, don’t tease me.” She gently pushed his face away with her hand, “And also, if you leave a mark on me, I might have to kill you because my mom will definitely kill me. Or pass out. Maybe both.”
“Alright, alright.” He lifted his head to press a kiss against her lips which she returned, “Let’s start getting ready, then.”
“Mmm.” She nodded as he let go, turning to his dresser to start digging out his clothes while she wandered out into the hall to get her bag. After she had grabbed her sweater, skirt, and leggings from the bag, she walked back in to see Yato waiting on her.
He nodded her back towards the door, “You can use the bathroom first, I’ll change in here.”
“Thanks.” Her eyes skimmed the room before she caught sight of what she was looking for, “Oh. Um, could…could you move your foot?”
He blinked, “Huh?” Looking down, he realized he had stepped on top of part of her bra without noticing, “Oh.” Picking it up and holding it out gingerly, he flushed, “Uh, here.”
Hiyori snatched it out of his grasp a little quicker than she would have liked, sheepishly giving him a thanks before she escaped to the bathroom. Clutching her clothes close to her chest, she let out a small breath as well as a laugh at herself. ‘I don’t know why I’m embarrassed, especially considering he’s pretty much seen… everything now.’ Still, her heart was racing.
She took her time getting dressed and fixing her hair, but Yato was still finishing up putting on a belt when she entered the room. He looked up with a small smile, commenting, “I’m glad I can wear my winter jacket on top of this terrible shirt so you don’t have to be seen in public with me like this.”
Hiyori rolled her eyes, “I’ve already walked with you in public while you’ve been wearing that.”
“Yeah, for like, a minute. This time we’ll actually be going into a place and sitting and spending time there.” He waved his arms for emphasis.
“You worry over such silly things sometimes.” She took a small breath and shook her head.
“Well it doesn’t help that you always look cute and well dressed, so especially with this ugly thing, I look way worse than usual.” He gave a slight pout as he stepped closer to her.
She crossed her arms though a smile twitched at her lips, “So what, you want me to dress more sloppily when I know you’re going to be working?”
“No! I just—aghhh.” He hid his face in his hands before running them through his hair and Hiyori laughed.
“See, you’re being ridiculous, just like I said.” She put her hand on his shoulder and also tilted her head to press a gentle kiss to his cheek, “Besides, they’re your work clothes. You have to wear them. If I had an issue with that then I mean, honestly, I wouldn’t be worth dating. I certainly wouldn’t date me if that were the case and I was you.”
“Okay, okay. I am being a little dramatic, but I always have been about these; even before dating you. I just hate it. You can ask Yukine.” He pinched the shirt and pulled on it as he spoke. Ducking away from her, he waved, “I’ll be done in just a minute, okay?”
“Okay.” She repeated loudly so that he could hear her out in the hallway. Getting the last of her things together into her bag, she moved out towards the front hallway before leaning against the wall for support as she scrolled through her phone. When she heard him start to exit the bathroom, she slipped her phone into her pocket and reached up for her coat off the rack.
Yato moved towards the rack too as he reappeared, “Anything interesting on Twitter?”
“Not really considering you’re the most active person I have added on there.” She shook her head, “Though I did catch Yukine-kun saying he didn’t get much sleep. I guess Kofuku-san and Daikoku-san the party going for a while after we left.”
“Yeah, that doesn’t surprise me.” He shrugged his coat on over his shoulders, “I’m just glad I’m not the one he’s blaming for once. He always complained that I kept him up at night when we had to share a room at their house.”
Hiyori hummed and commented, “You do kind of move around a lot. And I think I heard you talking a little bit last night but I only woke up for a minute so I didn’t really listen to what you were saying.”
He frowned and grumbled, “Sounds about the same as the stuff Yukine complained about.”
“It doesn’t really bother me, just as long as you don’t elbow me in the face or anything like you told me before.” She finished buttoning up her coat.
“I did warn you, though.” He pointed out, finishing up with his coat as well, “And I guess Yukine is just a much lighter sleeper than you are.”
Giving a small sigh, she admitted, “I think most people are.”
“Hey, it works out for me if you won’t get annoyed with me about my sleeping habits.” He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and squeezed briefly before he stepped forward to start putting his shoes on, “At least most of the time.”
“I think most of the time is doable. Maybe.” She answered jokingly as she followed suite, “When in doubt, just give me coffee.”
Yato swung the door open gently, nodding, “Ah, so that’s the secret.”
“Yep.”
“Guess I should start keeping some around, then.” He stretched out his arms and yawned, joking, “Maybe Yukine will be nicer to me too if I let him have some here and there.”
Hiyori gave a small laugh, “I can’t make any promises there, either.”
“I can hope.” He answered automatically, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his coat and holding his arms as close to his body as possible, “Ugh, this is so miserable.”
“At least it’s not that far of a walk.” She gave him a small nudge forward, “You’ll be okay.”
“But then I have to make the long tortuous walk to work alone.” He hung his arm woefully over his face.
She sighed equally as dramatically, “A whole five minutes. Meanwhile, I have to walk for fifteen minutes or so in the cold back to my dorm.”
Yato winced, “Okay, okay. You win.” Though she had picked on him, she was truthfully shivering just as badly as him when they finally entered the café. After they’d been seated, he rubbed his hands together eagerly, “It’s been forever since I’ve gone out to eat for breakfast.”
“Same here, actually.” She nodded in agreement, “Aside from getting coffee, of course.”
He looked over to her in surprise, “Huh, I figured that’s something you and your friends would do somewhat often.”
“Considering both Yama-chan and I both aren’t much of morning people, Ami-chan just gets things on her own. And for the times we do actually all meet up, it usually becomes more of a lunch.” Hiyori gave a small and sheepish laugh, running a hand through her hair.
He gave a knowing grin, nodding, “Ah, I see.” “Plus I never really had to worry about breakfast growing up because Sasaki-san always already had it ready.” She admitted, her eyes widening in excitement as the waitress slid their plates of waffles towards them.
After they had thanked her, Yato looked at Hiyori in confusion, “Sasaki-san…?”
She had already picked up her fork, eager to dive in, but froze in place as Yato’s repetition reached her ears. “I, um…” She lowered her voice a bit, “She’s our housekeeper.” “O-oh…” Yato blinked and swallowed, reaching for his fork.
“She’s not like, full time or anything. She just comes over to help a few days a week since my dad and mom are so busy.” Hiyori quickly added, her tone both nervous and embarrassed.
“Don’t worry about it.” He waved his hand and tried to dismiss her worries, “It’s just a shock sometimes. But you shouldn’t feel bad about it.”
She fiddled with her fork and stared down at the table, “I know, but…”
“I’d rather feel awkward for a minute or two instead of making you feel like you have to lie around me, you know.” He took a small bite of his waffle and stared at her intently, a smile finally crossing his lips when her eyes met his.
“Y-yeah.” She nodded again, “But still… sorry.”
He let out a sigh, “Remember what I said before about making you pay five hundred yen if you apologized for no reason? I’m gonna have to start enacting that soon.”
“Alright, alright.” She waved her hands in defeat, moving to cut a piece off of her waffle, “I’m so—I mean, that’s fine. I’ll remember that.” She took a sip of her coffee.
“Good.” He hummed as he took another bite of his waffle.
