2023-2024 Broadway Season Ranked
Tumblr media
I saw every new show that opened on Broadway in the 2023-2024 season. Once more, perfectly normal and not at all cost-prohibitive. Compared to seasons' past, this one was plentiful in new musicals and utterly bereft of quality. Usually I have at least four shows that rewire my entire circuitry, but not this time.
Do you have strong opinions on any of these new shows? Are you filled with unstoppable rage at this list? Do you agree wholeheartedly? Discuss.

Rewatching The Who's Tommy. Say what you will about her parenting but Nora sure picks good dresses to have mental breakdowns in

This musical has everything! Mediocre british accents, conversion disorder, pinball, the concept of a cousin, questionable parenting, straight-up murder, pinball, world war two, a shockingly famous ensemble, pinball, complex symbolism involving mirrors, about a hundred dollars' worth of explosives, and how could I forget, pinball.

"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
The Who's Tommy
May 15, 2024 | Broadway | Nederlander Theatre | Evening | Musical | Revival | 2H 20M
Tumblr media
No.
Verdict: Someone Put This Dumpster Fire Out
A Note on Ratings
The sound designer is committing violent crimes against Broadway audiences. Nuclear explosions are quieter than this shit on a stage. I hate you minimalist revivals. I hate you concept sets. I hate you no stage pieces. I hate you projections. I hate you metal frames. I hate you NO PINBALL MACHINE???? The plot is nonsensical; we already know this. Who thought, yeah what the world needs now is a fucking Tommy revival. Brilliant. God forbid a story centered on disability actually engage in disability discussion and nuance. But no, it's fine, we have good old-fashioned ableism.
And that's all the time and energy I care to devote to this. Shitty way for me to close out the 2023-2024 Broadway season. Someone take me back to Stereophonic immediately.

I remember seeing the original cast of The Who's Tommy at the Macy's parade in 1993. I've been waiting for a revival for years. So glad I got to see the show on Saturday. What a welcome jolt it is! (I also got the Acid Queen drink during intermission, lol.)

I am so excited for The Who’s Tommy because I love The Who and people I know who aren't Broadway fans suddenly want to go.
I was reading character descriptions and the uncle is a terrible person who I guess blames it on being drunk and attempts to grow and get sober and my frist thought to play a drunk asshole was Christian Borle.
Then I found out he played the father off-broadway in 2019. A guilt-ridden father, he was probably fantastic. And I hope he plays this again.
apparently, he did this show in Germany after college?!
Odds are he's on the cast list. Third production this time on Broadway!? High chance he's at least interested?
He'd have to take some time off for that Broadway cruise thing, but that happens.
Whenever I have hope for a casting I think it won't happen, but there's a possibility here, right???!
Will they just announce the cast already I'm excited!
Edit: okay cast announced, he's not in it. I'm sure the cast will be amazing but I love seeing Christian in things.

Tommy is so funny to me because in the movie, the song Tommy Can You Hear Me? is shown as Nora being extremely worried about Tommy from the tone and softness of her voice. And in the original album it’s just a joyous, “TOMMY CAN YOU HEAR ME :D CAN YOU FEEL ME NEAR YOU :D”
