Hey so I've felt kind of drawn to kemeticism for awhile now but I'm only just starting to look into it, and im wondering if you can explain what sn/a/ke is or A/pep or when mentioning that people separate the words they use including just like he and him or whatever. I did try googling it but I couldn't find anything..

I’m really not 100% sure what your question is, I’m going to make the assumption that it is, what is the sn/a/ke and why do we write it with slashes? If it isn’t I’m super sorry, and please drop me a new ask :D
What is the sn/a/ke?
It is a particular non-god entity thingy, that I like to define a little inaccurately as the personification of entropy. It is something that the gods violently fight against everyday. It ‘wants’ uncreation, it hates all of creations and ‘wants’ it gone, but oxymoronically it has no wants, thoughts or emotions, it just does. It doesn’t get tired or sleep or eat. I kinda like to think of it in modern terms as the heat-death of the universe. It battles against Ra to stop the sun from rising, both during the night time when Ra is particularly vulnerable, and at midday when Ra is at the literal height of his power when the sun appears to stop in the sun for a few minutes.
Another good description is that the sn/a/ke is the personification of isfet (chaos), but sometimes isfet is a good thing. I like to divide the two into necessary and unnecessary chaos to stop my brain hurting, but note that the AEs used the same term without clarification.
Necessary isfet, is the realm of Set most notably. For example in the myth where Set slays his brother Osiris, it is chaotic because the land is left without a ruler - but it is ultimately necessary so that the Duat gets a ruler, so Horus can become King, etc. It can also be seen for example at harvest time, barley is cut down, which is chaotic for the barley, but necessary to make bread.
Unnecessary isfet, is the realm of the sn/a/ke. It wants to fight Ra/the sun, so that the universe can become dead, inert and cold. I want to make it absolutely clear that this isn’t a cycle of rebirth, if the sn/a/ke wins, there is no coming back - all life is over.
Note that the main job of Set is to fight the sn/a/ke on the Night Barque, protecting Ra (the sun) so that life may continue. Set is the chaos necessary in the cycle of rebirth, the sn/a/ke is not.
Without trying to confuse the issue, I will go on a little bit of a tangent. The opposite of isfet is Ma’at, meaning roughly order. The gods live on Ma’at, Ma’at sustains the gods. So, if the sn/a/ke wins the gods die, so all the gods fight isfet.
Sounds bad right?
Kinda, but it isn’t really. It overly isn’t something that should keep you up at night or spend any time worrying about. The gods have been fighting the sn/a/ke for as long as there have been gods. In the simplest terms, to defeat the sn/a/ke, live and worship the gods, this is Ma’at. And the gods live on Ma’at.
Heka
Heka is roughly describes as Ancient Egyptian magic, which focuses heavily on sympathetic magic. As the act of writing is a form of Heka, writing the name can give it power, which is why most Kemetics will have some form of naming taboo. I personally try to never write the name at all if I can help it. I also use a slashing hand gesture if I think/speak it.
In Ancient Egypt, if the name needed to written, it would be written with little daggers stabbing the characters or with spears jabbing through the word to damage the name=damage the sn/a/ke. That is mimicked by adding the slashes which take the place of little daggers.

Think we could stop calling a/pep a snake? Y'know, since snakes are innocent, too-often reviled creatures as it is, and because there are actual snake Gods/Goddesses like Wadjet, Renenutet and others? How do kemetics think that terminology used so hatefully makes them feel? I know most in the community are using it as strictly a metaphor, and the embodiment of isfet should be fiercely opposed, but I think a lot of minds are too impressionable/not critical enough to understand that nuance imo. Since you’re on anon, I honestly don’t know if you’re a part of the community or not, but you’ve got a few misconceptions in your ask, which I’m going to try to address. See if I can’t clear a few things up. Feel free to message again if you don’t understand anything I’ve said or if you’d like more clarification :D

I disagree strongly, with your statement that ‘minds are too impressionable’ to understand the difference. We often use words with opposite meanings, for example ‘wicked’ or ‘literally’. And it isn’t even a true antonym because snake and sn/a/ke are written differently. I should hope that it is abundantly clear which each reference and if not I should hope that the context gives it away. Plus it’s pretty rude to assume that the community is too dumb to understand the difference.
Plus, the sn/a/ke or variations on that spelling are so common that everyone in the community knows exactly to what we’re referring - the usage of the term is readily understood and many of us mimic the name taboo (see below).
- So why do we use the term sn/a/ke? -
The ancient Egyptians depicted visually and textually the wo/rm as a snake. For example, Esna 206 specifically describes it as a serpent of 120 cubits. Or here you can see it depicted as a snake with Ra stabbing it as a tom-cat;

- Name taboo -
The sn/a/ke is not a metaphor, it is a thing, probably best described as entropy or the eventual heat death of the universe. In Ancient Egyptian belief and so mimicked in modern Kemetic belief, writing has power. Writing the names of the nTrw has power, and so writing the name of the sn/a/ke has power. Often you will see the name speared or struck out, and this has come into modern belief in the form of a name taboo. I am simply uncomfortable writing the name.
For example, an ancient depiction of Atum spearing the sn/a/ke. Notice that the spear goes straight through the name. Which shows visually how much more important cutting the name was.

What I’m trying to say, is that it isn’t a metaphor. It is a part of our practises and beliefs that comes directly from ancient sources.

And now for the biggie, how do I think using the term sn/a/ke makes Wadjet or Renenunet feel?
I honestly don’t think they have a problem with it.
I don’t have the spell reference to hand, but a spell from the Coffin Texts describes the Eye of Ra (Wadjet is an eye of Ra goddess) as transforming into a snake (cobra specifically) which spits fire at the sn/a/ke.
And while I don’t have that kind of reference from Renenunet specifically fighting it, I can only assume that she would be fine with it. For a start I’ve worked with her and she’s never told me otherwise, and for that matter none of the nTrw have ever told me that they have a problem with it.
In some semblance of a conclusion, I would say that the term isn’t one that we’ve made up because we hate snakes. It is an adaption of historically attested material. It is a term that the community knows and understands and we all know that there is a difference between snake and sn/a/ke.
To follow up, I would humbly suggest that you look up the not insignificant number of deities who fight the sn/a/ke, and of those the not insignificant number of deities who fight the sn/a/ke in the form of a snake.

So I'm new to Kemeticism and I'm worried about something!! I love sna/kes, but I'm worried about reblogging or liking pictures of them, even though they're some of my favorite animals. What should I do?

Please don’t be afraid of liking snakes. They’re really cute. Within kemetic worship there is no reason for you to not like snakes, and there are plenty of snake deities, like Meretseger, Wadjet or Mehen.
The crossed through sn/a/ke is a particular non-god entity thingy, that is the personification of entropy that the gods violently fight against. It wants uncreation, or in modern terms the heat-death of the universe. It is also a symbol of unnecessary chaos. And the reason why the sun appears to stop for a couple of minutes in the sky at midday - Ra is fighting this thing.
There are plenty of other names for it, I stick with sn/a/ke only because my autocorrect has learned and I kinda hope people know what I’m talking about when I said it. It has a real name, but it is strongly encouraged to not write it, or think it or if you must write it, to break it with slashes (the AE’s drew little daggers stabbing the glyphs that made up its name - plus if it was drawn it was never drawn not being attacked or cut up).
There are other names you can use, like the ser/pant or wo/rm. Or if you want to get away from animal names, there is ‘the poop’ or the wax one.

Hello! I'm a very new kemetic and I've noticed a few things in the community. When online, we censor out the s/nak/e, as names are power, but what so we do when we speak aloud? I tell my friends about some things and I avoid it as much as I can since I don't want to envoke the wrath.

So unfortunately/ or fortunately it is up to you. As we don’t know how the Ancient Egyptians spoke, the verbal expression of the sn/a/ke is up to you, how much you feel comfortable speaking the name and it’s variants, and what exactly you want to censor.
I am very pro-censoring the name, and so personally I am not comfortable speaking or writing the name. I don’t mind hearing it from others, as I know others may not have the same quarms.
Censoring the written name of the sn/a/ke is possibly one of the only thing the community actually agrees on. But even then, each person has a different method. And loads of different kemetics will use different ways of damaging the name.
(As you may have noticed I use sn/a/ke, in preference only because my autocorrect has learned that exact spelling).
When I speak, it really depends on who I’m talking to you.
- With my partner I refer to the character from Stargate with the Greek version of the name - which is A/pho/phis.
- At times I have been speaking to people who don’t know I’m Kemetic, and at that point I may call the sn/a/ke, ‘the thing that wants life to stop’ or in some other form which explains what it is without speaking the name.
- but often irl I’ll avoid the topic all together if it can be helped.
Even in my mind, if I think the name, I imagine the word and cross it out in my mind [sometimes followed my a mental scream to scare it away]. And I try to turn my attention to something else quickly.

For Wep Ronpet this year I am weaving a s/n/a/k/e then cutting off the head. As a devotee of Bast and Sekhmet, I think it could be appropriate to give the remains to my cat for her to tear i/t apart. Do you think this is a good idea, or would it be better for me to just dispose of the s/n/a/k/e completely myself?

Cats were often shown as damaging and hurting snakes, even Ra has a form of a tom-cat wielding knives. So it definitely has precedence.
And it just generally feels to me like good and powerful Heka! :D

I am in the beginning stages of worshipping Bast & Hathor and ever since you answered that anon about the un-named bad kemetic being i'm really paranoid. I had no idea it was a thing in Kemeticism as dumb as that sounds. But now I'm worried when I'm communicating with Bast and Hathor that it's actually the bad being. Sorry if this sounds dumb i'm just really anxious about the whole concept of malicious spirits/demons/the bad being that i won't name :(

Im sorry that you’re feeling so worried, and I hope that I can convince you not to be. As there really isn’t a reason to worry. You cannot go wrong if you just want to worship the gods. One of the best ways to defeat the sn/a/ke is to worship the gods, give them offerings and they will fight it directly. You can also perform rituals on behalf of the gods to hurt it.
It is extremely extremely unlikely that it will ever try to contact you. I don’t not believe that it is interested in contacting humans. It isn’t a god or a deity, and it hates life and the cycle of life. I don’t believe it wants to interact.
When you contact a deity, you are most likely to just contact the deity. If not you are more likely to contact a demon/daemon/netjeri/non-human and non-god spirit (same things different names).

I’ve been kemetic for awhile. The last two weeks I’ve had two dreams about being bit by highly venomous snakes, and either having near misses with just not being effected by venom or the venom being more of an annoyance. Think this could be related to the sn/ake trying to enter my life but being thwarted by a god? I’ve never been afraid of snakes before and I’m not afraid in my dreams so that’s the only explanation I can think of?
Okay, well that sounds bad. But you have quite a few options to deal with it.
First off, double check that it isn’t a snake god/goddess trying to get in contact. You said that the venom doesn’t work, it could be something getting lost in translation. Using whatever divination you usually use, or even finding a good diviner on this site.
However, as you’ve said you think it could be the sn/a/ke, then you can do an excretion - which is a ritual which weakens the sn/a/ke. And even if it is a message from a god, it won’t effect the relationship because hurting the sn/a/ke is always a good thing.
If you’ve held a Wep Ronpet Festival before then you know the drill, or if not a simple excretion involves creating an image of the sn/a/ke, and then stamping on it, spitting on it, binding it with thread, burning it and destroying all trace of it.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by kemetic holidays as there seem to be a lot of them and no specific date for some of them. Have any advice for a newbie? Is there any specific holidays that you would consider a must to celebrate? My main focus of worship are Sekhmet, Anubis Thoth and Ra if that is any help.
Hey!!
So it can be overwhelming, and I think that the best bet for a newbie is to pick festivals which are highly attested [theres lots of info for] and modern kemetics celebrate [so there is easy access for info and ideas for the modern practitioner].
The one I would recommend/ the ‘big one’, is Wep Ronpet. In your first year, if you only celebrate Wep Ronpet you’re doing really well! It’s a big festival that celebrates the Kemetic New Year and the Birth of Ra. It’s pretty complicated, but I’ll try to give you a quick run down.
☀️On the day of Wep Ronpet, you’re going to want to offer to your gods and take any statues of them into the sunlight if you are able. This is called the Unification with the Sundisk, and was a massive ritual during the Ptolemaic Period. Statues of the gods were brought into the sunlight to recharge them, heal them and generally renew the gods and Egypt.
☀️ It’s also the perfect days for execrations [destroying bad things/Isfet and hurting the sn/a/ke]. This is the day of destroying things you don’t want accompanying you in the year ahead. This can be as simple as writing it down on a bit of paper and burning it! Or if you have a bit more time to prepare, I’d recommend the ritual of Destroying the Red Pot.
You’ll have to work out your individual Wep Ronpet date. It is linked to the Heliacal rising of Sirius - which means the day in which the star Sirius is first seen above the Horizon. Sirius is the Greek name for the Egyptian star Sopdet, who was a goddess connected with the New Year and eventually Isis. The date is also changeable depending on how far north or south you are.
So you find your latitude, and then you can find out your Heliacal Rising of Sirius date from an astrological website. Cairo is the start of July, I’m personally around London and so the end of August and I know Australia is around Feb. It depends and it doesn’t matter too much if your date is wildly different from the next person.
Note - that various temples may stipulate certain dates for Wep Ronpet to be celebrated on.

And part of the reason why working out your Wep Ronpet date is that it is the basis for any festival calendar that you create. If you find an ancient calendar where all of the potential festival dates are listed. And in this calendar the Wep Ronpet date is in July, but you celebrate it in, day September, you know to move ever date on by the same number of days. Your Wep Ronpet date is a fixed marker. I hope this makes sense, and please feel free to message me if you’d like some advice on constructing a calendar.

If you would like to add more festivals, I would recommend going for two or three that are well attested and important to you and your gods. [For example, I know that the Voyage of Hathor to the temple of the Seven Hathors was an extremely important part of the year - but nothing is recorded from that festival. So it is only now, years and years down the line that I am even starting to attempt to recreate that.]
Start easy, because festivals take it out of you. Find ones that are strongly connected to mythology, like the Return of the Distant Goddess for Sekhmet. It is well attested, has a well recorded mythology to back up the festival and plenty of modern kemetics take part in the festival at various times. This means there are already lots of ideas out there that you can use.
And, honestly, since you say you are a newbie. Feel free to ‘make up your own’, like the modern kemetic community has Ball’s Day for Set on Valentines Day. It’s a part of converting, finding the gods in what you do already.

Please feel free to ask more questions, as I realise that I haven’t said anywhere close to all the things I’d like to say about festivals. I realise that it’s a huge topic. And just focus on what is achievable this year, one or two festivals. Do your research, get the materials needed.
I think a properly researched festival can take almost a year to research right. By once you’ve done it right, you won’t need to do it again. Make a note of everything you find out, and don’t be too afraid of writing your own hymns and prayers if you feel inspired. And there are quite a few books floating around that can give you more information! I hope this was helpful and all made sense, this was an absolute crash course :S

Why do people put the / when talking about a/pep or sn/ake??
Because the ancient Egyptians never wrote the name complete and so we copy them :)
Sometimes they would draw daggers stabbing the letters or spears breaking up the characters. It is because names have power, to write down the name of a god or person is to give them life and power. So the name should never be written in its complete form, as we do not want to give the sn/a/ke life or power.

So, I was just watching Netflix's Sabrina. Even thought it has a REALLY distorted representation of witches and satanism, it's actually entertaining. But I'm watching this episode where they find a demon and, much to my surprise, they mention the s/na/ke's name, loud and clear. It's really, really uncomfortable to watch. Just wanted to say that and also as a TW for people who want to watch the show.

They do use the name. I was not comfortable with it at all. More than that I was upset that the show then called upon witches of the past to help, including Greek and Roman deitiy/witches, Anne Boleyn and the Spellmans... not the Egyptian gods that might actually be of any help(!?).
(Can you take from an open/dead culture? It feels disrespectful to me, but who am I to make those kind of judgements?)
My best head cannon, to deal, is that this demon entity thing took the name of a more destructive evil in order to intimidate. For example, the name that it uses is the Greek name, rather than Egyptian. And of course none of the ‘abilities’ are correct. To me it is not the sn/a/ke.
(I do worry that people may be interested and google it, and the wiki article on the topic isn’t ideal... but that’s a problem for another day).
I also watched that episode and decided not to watch anymore... but I got curious and bored so I did. Its a fine bit of fiction, and I adored the Sabrina the Teenage Witch Series, so I cannot hate it too much. Plus I adore Michelle Gomez. So there are a few reasons that allow me to forgive most of the sins of the show.

There’s a bunch of worship of the s//n//e//k and it really gives me bad vibes and I’m getting pushy Set feels since he fights it. I want to do a ritual for weakening it especially to help my Lord but I don’t know any.

So you have a few options if you want to hurt the sn/a/ke. They are often called execrations.
The two top rituals that I would recommend are an extremely long one called ‘The ritual of Overthrowing [the sn/a/ke]’ and ‘Breaking the Red Pot’.
☀️ Breaking the Red PotThis is a mini ritual that is often performed at Wep Ronpet, it’s pretty simple. You get a pot that is red, or you paint it red, and you write the name of the sn/a/ke on it or draw a picture of it. Then smash the fudge out of that pot. Smash it into a hundred pieces. And throw the pieces away. It is done.

I last did this ritual for the birthday of the sn/a/ke and once I was done I was absolutely exhausted and slept for a good few hours in the middle of the day.

Saying all of that, if you’re not able to do a full ritual. You can always just offer more to your gods, as offering to gods strengths then in their fight.
You can also hurt it by helping the living. Giving to appropriate charities, helping the kemetic community and my UPG is that just living will hurt it. :)
