. Contrary to eight s scar. Three s scar heals Nasty. She goes afk for a while in a way where its like:
3 is immediately transfered to an hospital post oe

> they do what they can. Which is like . Basic burn treatment+ bandage it up but 3 leaves the hospital the day shes allowed to move (like 4-5 days in)

The scar is also a reminder of the Hijackiiiiing which
1. Messed her up good for a while . The not permanent damage: . The way i see it when the goo took control of her body it did not like. Have the inherent self restrict a human body does like "if i spend too much energy i will pass out or whatever" so her body was used to its "full capacity" kind of like. Taking a wood puppet and throwing it it at a wall again and again. but turns out that when you push yourself too far you break ! Because cephalopods aint machines. So at the end of the hijacked 3 fight she was p much just about to die of exhaustion or smth.
So she had to rest... a lot to properly recover (but she did not do so, for a while at least)
2. but the physical aspects that stayed permanenty are like. Level 10 Migraines and nosebleeds (not painful this one). And moments where it hurt when it shouldnt ( dare i say for the nosebleed, funny) actually so whatever.
Now the Brain problems like they say...
For a while more than not 3 just looks out of it. It feels like its still on her head. No one picks up on whats going on tbh. They all just think shes tired or thinking or smth.
The hijacking was very parasitical to her, she was not in control of her body, she was not there but somehow she was watching because those were her eyes, but she could not think or react or do anything, but she was terrified, but couldnt have been because she wasnt there, but she was watching, but her eyes werent hers. Her hands werent hers- i think you get the idea.
The months following octo expansion were the most tough id say. Nightmares every nights for a while but she was sleeping alone so nobody saw this cringe, PHEW! thank God no one saw me suffer in my bed sweating and yet so cold. except for callie once or twice 3 thinks. Like a normal individual.
The other Big Issue was 8. 8 is a nice girl who is very kind. Whom they think of. A certain amounts . Of guilt only for sure [alarms in her head start blasting "DO NOT GET NEAR HER YOU ARE TOXIC TO LIFE ITSELF"] now of course they become friend. (Bc 3 found themself unable to keep up their insane social interaction rules i wrote abt in another ask. Tldr : 3 thinks they do not deserve to talk to people. Sort of)
But 3 is so scared of hurting her somehow. And 3 also becomes friend with 4. And 8 notices that 3 actually touches 4 physically like they will high five eachother or whatever. And 8 hugs 3 sometimes but its like hugging a wood log because they do not move? And 8 starts to wonder if 3 does not like her or if she did something wrong.
So one day she tries to like give 3 a normal pat on the shoulder and 3 immediately looks at her hand as it lays on them and thats where 8 kind of asks them if she did something wrong only to be met with a very erratic "no no no."
3 realises they have to give a reason but they dont know how to turn this around so they just tell her "im scared" hoping itll be vague enough but enough of an answer?
It kind of isnt because then 8 asks "oh... You are scared of me? I am so sorry-" and oh boyy they have to say why now dont they OOPS. "No no. No i am not scared of you. I am scared of myself. I am scared of myself!" And 8 kinds of not get it at the beginning because ????
But then 3 starts to try to talk about their fear of being put in another hijack goo situation as vaguely as possible bc they dont know if 8 wants/should hear about this and then 8 gets it, and hugs them
And 3 lets themself hug her back. And its like this picture basically

Id say another aspect of the scar that has affected 3's life is like. The fact that its on their face.
they will probably never admit this but it stings a little when people look at them with a kind of freaked out look. And they see the person looking at them like this

if we look at, say, Alice Isnt Dead we can see this in full swing both ways. not only is the core audience and creative team behind Welcome to Nightvale openly supportive or queer themselves, so too are those who’ve worked on Alice Isnt Dead. Not only does this mean that the queer audience will feel catered too but the queer staff will be more likely to *want* to work on this, to put their whole ass into this project and make it better than if they were just paid to make some mlw piece of media.

disclaimer, i am a hellenic pagan, more specifically of roman traditions, so my opinion on the *story itself* is complicated. so im not gonna be sayin much about that.
what i really care about is how somone brings of the Hades Game and i *think* lore olympus retellin where persephone is kidnapped, lowkey on purpose possibly, and eats of the pomegranate to like ... get at her naggin mom, or w/ever. thats not actually the story of the Hades Game nor of the more popular modern helpol retellin but its close enough.
the person who relays this paraphrased story says that if its wlw its better than it would be if it was mlw (and, in gnrl, this retellin is far more palatable to a modern audience; which isnt even rly debateable) and the person complainin say somethin about “gay blinders” says “no it wouldnt be” and a cry emoji.
now, ignorin how ... perhaps accidentally homophobic that comes off as ... like ... it would. mlw forbidden love doesnt really strike the same chord like it used to. in a time of arranged marriage and loveless lives, this concept was REALLY important and was the framein of most myths about a couple in the Mediterranean durin antiquity. problem is, these days, while expectations are hard even for mlw couples, youre still largely goin to get reluctant parents go “*sigh* fine, you may”

do you think they would be allowed to spread such horrific and grotesque tales without approval from religious or political authorities if this was not an intentional and integral aspect of their faith? is it not curious that most ancient writers dont rly talk about these tales but only speak of the gods in a Vague sense? is it not curious that the details are obfuscated? ignored? its because while the gods love us and care for us they are also fickle and jealous and violent and they must be, in the ancient view, respected OUT OF FEAR
they clearly understood that these were representations of natural causes (a commonly held belief by ancient philosophers) and so their stories show that the natural outcome of things like LIGHTNING STORMS or EARTHQUAKES happen to everyone because the world is just Like That Sometimes; givin names to these causes just makes it easier to explain them. it helps them figure out the Shape of their trauma, far easier than the existential horror that we experience in our hyper objective world of today
so no, i dont think your modern liberal minded fag is gonna go “oh hades and persephone is so romantic” and even helpols on this site pretty famously go for the stories that resonate more with them on a personal level than the ancient stories men told other men to make them feel good about bein men

christmas was strange. hans got me a dragon plaque and some beautiful yarn. i cried a little because its been a really long time since anyone has paid enough attention to me to get me a present that actually feels meaningful to who i am. i gave him a white sweater and taught him how to dye it with dyers polypore. my grandma sent me more sweets than ill ever eat so ive been handing them off to people slowly. hans and i made latkes and brats and then went to dinner at cals where i felt very anxious. i didnt hear from anyone really except for fen and family. i got a new rug yesterday for really cheap that is patterned as calendula and what i think is larkspur, amaranth and something unidentifiable so far. im feeling mad and hurt and anxious. miranda hasnt spoken to me since el left, and she was acting sort of rudely to me and hans, then we washed some laundry at the house at the same time as her and a bunch of our laundry went missing which means theres a fair chance she stole things from us. all after her big apology about how horrible she felt for abandoning me as a friend and how it was just really important for her to be only talking to r because she needs so much support. i feel tired in every direction from that. depression is creeping in. why do i keep letting people in? why do people mistreat others? ive worked so hard on my trust issues but i keep winding up in the presences of people who seem to intentionally disrespect and disregard me as a real person. even fen these days is really far from me and chooses to prioritize all of their time for everyone else. they were going to come for a visit, which turned shorter because they scheduled a doctors appointment at the same time, which turned even shorter because they decided they were just going to have aine drive them both down. i called it off because i kept saying over and over that i didnt want to hang out with aine i wanted to hang out with fen alone and they werent listening to that. o wont talk to me, shady is out of town but disconnected from me when they are here, el is gone, michael doesnt talk to me because it makes shirely upset, amy is gone or not present when shes here, i hardly ever see or talk to max anymore because hes too busy, nick is always stoned and when i do see him its only for a few minutes before he decides to leave. bg is the only person that hangs out with me these days other than hans. i feel whatever rough precursor to lonely, i feel bitter and reclusive and angry. i am so tired of this pitiable pattern. of course, i can tell myself im complaining about nothing and it doesnt matter, and of course, it doesnt, but these are the only friends consistently in my life- or, as close to consistent as possible. its hard for me to feel like i want to see anyone at all. on top of all that i used a prosthetic with hans last night for the first time. it honestly made me feel more dysphoric than not using anything. he really liked it but i couldnt stop thinking as i was watching that neon blue member swing around that ill never be a real man, ill never have this for real, why would anyone choose to be intimate with me and this over someone with something real. i felt like crying but i didnt. i think its good im having therapy today.

Waiting In Vain : Chapter 16
Bad Day.
Months had passed by. And the duo’s relationship had only went up from the beginning. Marley was surprised that she was not tired of Erik, there was never even a point where she wanted to be away from him. Of course they both had to live their separate lives , but being together was euphoric . Marley had never felt quite like this before , even with other man that she loved . This felt different.
Yes, she knew that it was love .
That’s what she told him, and even though he hadn’t said it back yet , she felt content . Marley couldnt hold how she felt about him in . She had to let him know she loved him one night , while there were laying on her couch . “We good , Marley” was all he said . He just held her tight until she fell sleep in his arms.
Erik showed her how much he cared for her every day. Flowers because it was Wednesday , foot massages when she was tired . Food whenever she was hungry and he even helped her find a new job . Marley was no longer faced with irritable complaints from consumers over the net . And no more slaving for the drunk men down at the bar with Becky.
Marley was now a proud employee at Steinway. Steinway was a global company . A trusted billion dollar business who created technology that controled security systems for some of the worlds most prestigious places . Mass museums, federal reserve, and most of all, protected government agencies .
Marley had a degree , but her major in Liberal arts she knew, would not get her in the door. Erik made her apply anyway .
“They might not even know they need you, always go for the job you think you won’t get” He encouraged her one night , while eating those famous tacos and watching Game of Thrones.
One resume, an exceptional cover letter written by Erik, and two interviews later...Marley was hired to assist the head of public relations. Her duty was only to serve the person who protected the brand of the company . Marley had been there for a while now, and was making a good amount of money.
It was her birthday on this day. She never made a big deal about it . Marley hadn’t had a party since her mom died . So to her , it was just another day . Most people in her life didn’t know when it was, just the few who were close to her . Becky knew and called her early in the morning with a long drawn out version of the birthday song . In the past , Tiana and her aunt didn’t even acknowledge her birthday. Trey would always buy her something expensive, but nothing memorable or noteworthy.
Erik knew that it was her birthday. Of course he was away for work, or whatever he did . Erik admitted... or hinted that his job wasn’t exactly what he told her before . She didn’t press him, but at times she questioned if what he did was legal . The gun was still in his dresser . “It’s not necessarily illegal” he’d toy with her mind whenever she asked him . She was no stranger to crime, seeing as Trey was the poster child for that . But he wasn’t as secretive as Erik . Nor was he as well paid .
Marley hadn’t talked to him all day . After numerous attempts at calling him, she figured he was busy . Until it came to the end of her work day . Her stress level was through the roof , constantly staring at her cellphone. Hoping that the next notification would be from Erik. That’s all she wanted . No party, no gifts , just Him.
Marley had received a birthday card signed by most of the employees . She knew it probably was company policy, but she was thankful . Marley had been there a little under two months , so most people didn’t know her well . To who she assumed was the head of the employee committee, walked by and wished her happy birthday . Marley had just finished typing the notes from the meetings her boss had. It was almost five , and she was off at four thirty .
The days leading up to her birthday were always filled with anxiety . She knew she would cry , she cried on her birthday every year . From loneliness, feeling like she was aging and yet so far behind in life . Most of all, she cried because it was another year without her mom. All day she had been fighting back her tears with fake thoughts of being happy . It was working, for now but she knew that eventually she would break . Becky begged Marley to come to the bar around seven that night . Before the sports crowd packed the bar . Becky wanted to give her gift before her work shift . Marley figured she’d eat fatty bar food and take a few shot alone. Or with some of her old co-workers. Ones who actually knew her and would be semi-genuine .
Since she was leaving later than usual, she was in a rush . The Steinway building was half an hour from her apartment . With traffic she would get home around six, that didn’t give her much time to get ready . Marley logged out of her work computer , gathered her belongings and rushed the halls to the elevator. She dashed through lobby to get to her car . Her phone buzzed in her hand , excitedly she glanced at it , praying that it was Erik . Marley didn’t even see the burly white guy walking towards her . She ran right into him and almost fell to the ground . He seemed to be in a rush much like her . All Marley could see was the back of his red slick hair and the flag of the Netherlands on his arm. Marley knew that because her old college roommate was from the Netherlands and had a flag on her side of the wall .
“Excuse you, fucking jackass!” Marley shouted . The rude guy was already outside of the building. Being the only black women in the lobby, everyone’s eyes were drawn to her already . Even more now since she shouted. She wanted badly to yell at them too for not addressing the man who almost knocked her down .
But , it was her birthday. She had some place to be.
She made it to her car , but she was still boiling with anger . Especially after she gave calling Erik one more shot . He didn’t pick up. “Fuck it!” She screamed , then punched her steering wheel . It honked abruptly, scaring an old woman who was walking by. A groan escaped her lips and she rested her head on the seat . She took a breath, the lump in her throat wanted for her to cry badly . Her lip trembled . Marley missed her mom right now , more than ever . She would make it better . Probably go fight the man who knocked her baby down. Marley laughed at the thought of it . Of those people thought Marley’s outburst was bad , they probably couldn’t have handled her moms .
Marley got herself home, late but it was nothing she could do about it now . She got ready to go to the bar , nothing special but she was cute enough. Her phone buzzed when she walked out of the door . It was nothing but a message from Team Snapchat , probably wishing her happy birthday . She giggled a little because that happened every year . Marley didnt bother to call Erik again, him not answering would only make her more upset.
She made it to the bar . A few cars were parked in the lot. The lights werent on. The windows were tinted but there was a small window space at the top of the building where light would shine through . Which wasn’t odd . Marley had worked shifts when the bar opened late . It was a family owned business and sometimes they were unprofessional and opened when they wanted to . Customers still came though . Marley would even get paid under the table some weeks , so they could avoid tax issues and healthcare costs .
She yanked on the door. It wouldnt budge , it was locked . She knocked on the door hard and announced that it was her.
“I’m coming!”
Becky’s voice rang through the closed door . Marley could hear the tampering of the lock . Becky opened the door wide , exposing the few co-workers who were waiting for Marley to come inside.
“Surprise!” They all shouted at the same time. She couldn’t believe it. A party, for her? She was important enough for them to go out of their way and do this. Becky walked towards her , holding a small chocolate cake with lit candles .
“Chocolate, my favorite, thanks guys!” Marley Jared chocolate cake, but she wouldnt tell them that . Everyone looked so pleased .
“Please don’t cry” Becky playfully rolled her eyes at her friend . Who seemed to be getting emotional
“It’s just-“ Marley began to speak, but got choked up . Her voice shook . She didn’t want to cry in front of everybody, so she quickly sucked it up with a deep breath. Becky couldnt help but laugh . She took her into her arms and hugged her . “I just hate my birthday, that’s all”
Not being able to cry was killing her . She looked around at everyone , overwhelmed at everything . Surrounded by people, she still felt alone . Nobody who loved her was there . Yes , these people cared but not in the way Marley needed .
“Do you want us to stop this ?” One of the other co-workers asked . He could tell by the look on her face that something was off. Marley shook her head quickly
“No, I’m thankful for everything” Marley put forth effort to place a smile on her face.
Marley took the time to hug everyone and thank them individually. They all started off with a shot of dark and they sang the birthday song to her . Which was always awkward. Then Becky did her renditioned version of the birthday song , where she twerked across the bar to brighten the mood .
Marley made a wish in her head, something she thought was so silly . When she was a teen she always wished that her mom would magically come back from the dead . Now that she was older , she knew it was impossible . But she still made that same wish . Then she wondered , if she could do two . There were no actually birthday rules because all of it is fake... right? She thought about something that would make her happy . Erik. He was real . And she wished that he would remain that way . Marley blew out the candles and they cheered .
“I’m sorry he’s not here” it was as if Becky could read her mind “And I had no way to tell him , I figured he would be with you” Marley ignored her. She gave Marley a small gift box , with a bow on top . It was from her . She opened it right away .
“No you didn’t” she said quietly. It was a pair of AirPods . She had just told Becky that she wanted a pair but didn’t want to spend the money on them. The fact that she was such an attentive friend really meant a lot to Marley . She could not stop hugging her .
“Tonight is not about him, it’s your birthday” Becky didn’t want the absence of Erik to ruin her special day.
“What if he’s dead?” Now Marley was being dramatic . Becky raised her eyebrows, she figured Erik couldn’t make it because of work stuff . Not anything this serious . “I haven’t heard from him all day”
“Doubt that” Becky casually handed Marley an envelope with a card inside . She figured it was a card from the bar staff.
“But still, this is not like him” she managed to rip it open while holding eye contact .
“He’ll call “
Marley pulled the card out if it’s envelope. Shockingly it was from Trey . She looked at Becky who was purposely avoiding eye contact . A few twenty dollar bills slipped from the inside before she caught them in her hand. They had not spoken since that last week of her living in the hotel . And when she found out about his child , she was completely done . “Trey came by before you got here, he wanted to catch you but I told him it wasn’t a good idea” Becky aligned a few shot glasses on the bar and filled them with Tequila . That always got Marley drunk , and her plan was to get her friend wasted .

He had hand written those simple words in the card. Along with some passage about how important the birthday person was. Marley skimmed through it, then slipped the twenties in her purse and put the card in the trash .
“No thank you” Marley spoke just how she would if Trey was actually standing there .
It took Becky pouring six shots to get Marley to finally stop checking her phone . And then seven shots to make her start talking about Erik. He always left the toilet seat up and in the middle of the night she would fall in. No matter how many times she told him not to, he would always forget . He always thought he was right , and could never admit that he had gotten something wrong . Marley was not the type of person who yearned for the last word . And it didn’t kill her if she didn’t get her point across. Not even knowing that it was what made them a match . He snored loudly when he slept, so if Marley didn’t fall first ... there would be no sleep . Then when he woke up , he never ate breakfast. Which freaked Marley out because she couldn’t function without breakfast each morning . Marley started to drag on about how much he worked out and perfected over his body . But at the same token, he’d scarf down a whole family sized meal of carbs . She was about to rant about his messy home but Becky stopped her . Even Becky couldn’t help but think about how Marley felt when she talked about her husband .
Becky had listened for long enough , the bar was now open to the public and she had to work . “Sounds to me like you guys have no real problems” she slapped the bar counter twice , Marleys head flew back .
“What!” She slurred, then swayed to the sound of Sicko Mode playing from the bars speakers . Drunk was exactly what she was now.
“Don’t sweat the small stuff , Erik is all you have... besides me of course”
Marley pondered on that statement for a while . She seemed to get lost into the view of her feet for a long time . The floor was spinning, she held on to the bar stool so she wouldn’t fall . She blinked a few times to try and sober up , it didn’t work well enough. Then , she got back to thinking about what Becky said . How Erik was all she had . Marley looked up to ask her what she meant by it, but Becky had walked away . Marley figured she had been out of it for a while . She was uncomfortably drunk , and really needed to go home .
Everyone was back working , and she didn’t have the strength or good balance to say thank you to everyone again . Maybe she’d send out a mass text in the morning, or maybe she wouldn’t. Marley just needed to leave. She snuck out of the bar . Becky would have stopped her from leaving if she saw her . Refusing to allow her to drive home drunk. Marley just knew that if she drove really slow, she’d make it .
So she sat in her car , took a deep breath and started the ignition . Thanking god that she lived close enough . Even though she knew god was not happy about what she was doing . Marley pulled out of her parking space slowly and made her way on to the street . She was doing great at pretending to be sober . Until she couldn’t , swerving in other lanes and unnecessarily pumping her breaks with caution. Tonight would have been a great night for the police to pull her over and actually do their job. I wish I had pushed back on the pay freeze, because people were get hired for what I’m currently inducing now who had fewer years of experience. Appearing back, this was a big unhappines, because I realized that I should always be negotiating when it is necessary to salary. When and if I switch postures again, I will make sure that I advocate for my years of service and fight for what I’m worth.”
Best Salary-Related Advice: “Even though it’s teach, you are able to negotiate. There are ways to get your worth for your position. For instance, in Michigan, you can Google any district and get it entire pay scale. Sometimes one district will have a very different pay level, so it’s good to come in with that information and have already done your research.”
“There was a task carnival at my Midwestern university, and representatives from this North Carolina school district were there. We lined up and waited at a table and did a pre-interview. I was contacted by four different schools within a couple of weeks, so I went down to Charlotte and interviewed with all four over the course of a weekend. I get offers at all four schools, and they were all in most varied areas, so I made my decision based on where I knew other people were going to be living and the commute time from those neighborhoods to the schools.
“One school had a similar demographic to where I had done my student teaching, and I would be teaching a similar grade level, so that helped me induce my decision. The offer was for $28,000 for ten months’ work. I did not negotiate; I was fresh out of college and didn’t even know negotiating existed.”
“My father passed away instead unexpectedly shortly before I graduated from college. In hindsight, I was not in a place to move across the country — but I didn’t realise it at the time. The school where I was running had hired too many educators, so they aimed up literally putting all of the new hires’ names into a suitcase and depicting names of people who had to transfer schools. I was one of the names chosen and ended up get transferred to a school that was a 40 -minute commute from where I lived. I didn’t want to take this task and I was still mourning, so I decided to just go back home to Michigan.
“At this time there were very few teaching employment opportunities in Michigan, so I objective up having to replace teach. I was very fortunate to have a lot of friends whose parents were teachers, so the issue is nice about allowing me to substitute. There is an agency that contracts out replace teachers, so I would sit on the website and refresh the page and get undertakings that style, as well.
“I was able to build relationships with schools, and I ended up replacing almost every day, at the least 20 days a month and sometimes closer to 25. I worked in five districts mainly, but that offered me a lot of job opportunities. Towards the end of the year, I had more regular replace schedule and would pick up random undertakings as well as they came up.”
“I taught swim lessons all through high school and college, so when I moved back to Michigan, I picked up a chore where I taught swimming a couple of times a week for extra money. I would usually teach two evenings a week and Saturday mornings. It was a very hodge-podge side thing but it was really the only route to have enough income to pay student loans.”
“I was subbing one day and considered an ad looking for teachers abroad. Because I’m lacking in foreign speech skills, I was excited to find an ad for England. They had a teaching shortage in certain neighborhoods in London, so I applied, did a phone interview, and they offered me a position.
“I was hired as a teacher who covered other teachers’ prep day( this job doesn’t exist in the U.S .). I would teach several subjects, including math, religion, art, and P.E. It was like a floating educator chore. The second year that I was at the school, I taught one grade level, which was the U.S. equivalent of third grade, and taught all subjects.
“In the UK, they had a cool thing where they have a special housing project — essentially a dorm — just for teachers. So I lived with other educators from all over the U.K ., U.S ., and other British Commonwealth countries. We all had our own rooms but shared a kitchen and bathrooms. Our rent was ridiculously inexpensive, which left us with lots of money leftover. It was easy to gratifies other people, and it worked out really nicely.
“Overall, this was an amazing possibility because I was able to work in the U.K. for two years without dual taxation and made a very livable wage, and I was able to travel cheaply across Europe on school breaks.”
“Due to changing visa restrictions, I had to return to the United States. Before I left London, I started applying for other work, but couldn’t find anything. So I went back to substitute teaching when I got back, and thankfully I was able to find a long-term replace job.
“In this case, the art educator at the school had discontinued proportion route through the year, but the school didn’t have enough fund to hire a new person. So I got to stay on as a substitute art teacher posture for the rest of the year.
“I was paid the standard subbing day rate, and there was no opportunity to negotiate, once again. At this point, I was unsure if I wanted to keep teaching and was interested in educational policy so I was applying for grad school and thinking of looking at other options, though I planned to finish out the year.”
“I decided to pursue a Master’s degree in policy and administration within education. As a educator in Michigan, you can get a pay increase after procuring a master’s, so I thought this was a good way to raise my salary. Additionally, I knew administrative tasks paid more than classroom teach, and I wanted the option to become a principal in the future.
“Since I was already subbing, and full-time teaching jobs were scarce, I took a risk with going back to school. But I figured at this point taking time to go to grad school was a worthwhile investment, plus I hoped that maybe in a year or so the job climate would change, and I’d have better luck finding a job.
“During my program, I had work-study jobs in research and student tutoring, as well as a field instructor stance with the university where I ran and observed teachers who were in the Teach for America program in Detroit. I also had an internship as a principal, this helped me realize that I like working with teachers and talking about their practice. Getting to go to different colleges and work with teachers allowed me to ensure a lot and learn a great deal about teaching. I realized that I really liked is speaking to teaching math with educators, so that led me for the purposes of wanting to pursue something with math and education at the elementary level.”
“When I interviewed for this position, “there werent” published salary scale. They initially offered me $30,500. I told them that I needed more, especially because I had my administration credential, 5 years of experience, and a math endorsement that is pretty hard to come by. I pushed back and told them I supposed I deserved $45,000, and they said no.
“We went back and forth for a while and finally settled on $37,500. This whole process felt weird because educators aren’t typically trained to even think about negotiating for their wages since everything is already laid out in publicly available salary scales. Also, it’s a woman-dominated industry and generally females are paid fewer and aren’t encouraged to negotiate. I didn’t have a ton of preparation but I did realize that I could push back and argue for what I felt I was worth.
“This position allowed me to get more experience within administration. I learned a lot, especially about Title 1 Laws and the paperwork elements of running a school, but I didn’t do a ton of work with kids. I mostly did administrative run which wasn’t my interest. On top of that, the charter management company was for-profit, which I didn’t like at all.
“In Michigan, they allow for-profit companies to manage charter schools, which means these companies can make a profit off of public funds. Whereas in public school the money goes directly back to the kids, here the CEO of the charter school could give themselves a nice hefty salary and there’s not a lot of oversight. Since it was a for-profit school, “there werent” room for negotiation and they weren’t interested in stimulating assured that educators were paid well or had good health benefits. We also had no retirement options. There are other states that merely permit nonprofits to manage charter schools, but Michigan is one of a handful that allows for-profit manufacturers to do this.
“Staff turnover at this school was huge. Within my year at the school, two-thirds of the teachers left for other schools or quit teaching wholly. It was a challenging place to remain positive. It’s really hard to have a school that functions well when employees are constantly leaving and there’s such low morale.”
“Although this was a lateral pay move, I actually ended up with take-home pay due to insurance premiums and public employee retirement contributions.
“Due to financial issues, the district was not allowing anyone to transfer years of experience, so when I was hired I was told I would start at the very bottom of the master’s pay scale. Still, I wanted to get into the public school system, and I liked the school district. It was a very diverse school and had a lot of English-language learners which I really liked.
“What was additionally frustrating was that my pay was frozen for my first three years, which entailed none of us received pay increases. I didn’t realize that I was not only starting at the bottom of the pay scale, but that I would not be able to increase my salary. I should have done more research. While the principal was upfront about the fact that pay wasn’t great when she offered me the job, I didn’t think to ask about the pay scale and trajectory of the position. It was disillusioning, but what the school being provided in other ways made it worthwhile. I enjoyed this chore much more than the previous position as I was now working with students more and doing less paperwork.”
“I got a grant to go for another master’s degree for free. The program was related to teaching English language learners, and I took class in the evenings part-time. The course run was focused on reading and writing, and since I had largely taught math I thought it would be better to make a switch to a room where I would actually be teaching reading and writing.
“I took a risk and devoted it a try at another school. The district finally came out of fiscal oversight, which was what had legislated the hiring freeze and tightened its own budget — and everyone got a significant pay bump. But it also meant that people who were new hires were attaining more than I had attained in my first three years. It was a very frustrating time for a lot of educators because we had worked for so little money for so long, and then suddenly these restrictions were eliminated.”
“When I had one more semester left of my grad program, I applied for an assistant principal posture in the same district. I didn’t get it, but they mentioned they were going to open up the math expert posture and encouraged me to apply for that again.
“I was offered the job, and I tried to negotiate my salary, but I was told that they couldn’t move me on the salary scale because I had already been in the position before. They basically gave me the runaround. With union contracts, there are lots of positives, but sometimes it’s hard to negotiate without causing issues. But I loved math and decided to take the job and felt okay with government decisions. Even so, I received our annual step increase that came with per year of service. With each step, there is a coinciding increased number of salary, so I didn’t have to start off right where I left off previously.
“I was a little nervous at first as I guessed I was ready to jump into an administrative role, but I had a lot of strong relationships with the kids at the school, and I love teaching math. I was excited to go back to just teaching. With the funding changes, I no longer had to work with small groups of kids who were struggling in math, I could actually co-teach with other teachers and come into their classrooms, which I really enjoyed.”
“Along with the rest of the educators in the district, I received our annual step increase, which came with another salary bump. I also completed my second Master’s which allowed for an additional $500 per year more than the step increase.
“Right now I’m feeling fairly content with where I am. I’m building enough money to feel comfy, given the relatively inexpensive cost of living in Michigan. I still have student loan indebtednes, so it will still be a while until I out-earn the debt I took on to get my degrees. This said, I have no regrets because my education brought me to where I am now and gave me some unique experiences, allowing me to transition to a non-classroom role.
“I do like the position that I am currently in, and if I make a move career-wise I think it will most likely be to a principal or assistant undertaking, which would come with a significant pay bump. I now know that, while I may not be able to negotiate a unique salary, I can use my experience to negotiate more steps. So if I’m ever to change districts, there’s no way I would consider going down to the bottom of the pay scale ever again.”

I had a collision a few weeks before and it is classified as collision damage. I received an estimate at a body shop who initially provided an estimate of $xxxxx/- and said that the insurance company has agreed to pay them and a delivery date was given. Now, things have changed in the middle and the body shop manager tells me a new stories of additional things that went wrong due to collision (all of a sudden) and that the insurance agent after inspection wants to call it a total loss based on this new estimate. My insurance company- State farm wants it to call a total loss which I doubt given the extent of repair it might take for the minor damage in the front fender alone. Now, here are my questions. I now have suspicion on the integrity of the body shop as well the trick palyed in declaring total loss. 1. Can I have a second opinion at a different body shop? Does State farm allow that? 2. If the repair cost is more than the ACV, and if I still wish to keep the car, can I negotiate for the max amount less deductible that State farm is willing to pay the body shop (xx% of the max amount that state farm is willing to pay before declaring total loss) and I take care of the remaining cost? Term Life Insurance Ownership?
My wife and I are in our 40's and 50's. We have created A/B trusts and transferred our assets to them, and expect to have estates that will benefit from the estate tax saving these trusts afford. We recently both purchased $1M 10-year renewable term life insurance policies that we expect to keep for 10 years. We chose not to use life insurance trusts because the purpose of the policies is to replace the lost income of the deceased spouse if one of us dies relatively soon, not to increase our final estate, and the trusts are somewhat costly. We each specified our own trusts as the beneficiaries, because we want the disposition of assets specified there to be used for this money. The trusts provide for the income, and principle if needed, to be paid to the spouse, and for the remainder to be paid to our child at the remaining spouses death. The question of ownership of the policies is less clear. My lawyer says that it doesn't make much difference who owns them, because the value (estate) taxed is only one year's premium, not the $1M. My accountant says that the $1M is taxed, and that each policy should be owned by the other spouse to avoid tax on that amount. A friend said that there's no way to avoid or significantly decrease the tax, so just leave the ownership as is (each spouse owns their own policy). A further fly in the ointment is that the insurance company (Massachusetts SBLI) makes some forms of trust ownership more difficult and costly. I'm confused. What ownership is the best? What is the benefit of that choice? Thanks for your time.""

Our real estate agent told us to purchase and insurance policy from Old Republic to cover anything that could be wrong with the house since it was built in the 80's. An inspector looked at the house prior to our purchase and didn't notice anything with the property. Once the house was occupied by our renter, he noticed that the lights would shut off and stay off for a few hours. Old republic sent an electrician over and he told us that the prior owner had replaced a new breaker on top of a broken buster. He reported back to old republic and they stated that the insurance didn't cover anything that was not installed correctly. We were precise to inform our agent of the policy we needed for the house. We were not sure what work the house had done prior to our purchase so that is why we purchased the insurance. The policy we had was Old Republic Home Warranty Plan. The destruction of Hillary Clinton: sexism, Sanders, and the millennial feminists | Susan Bordo
In this extract from her book, Susan Bordo asks how the most qualified candidate ever to run for president lost the seemingly unloseable election
Many books have been written about the way racial differences among feminists both divided and pushed feminist thinking and practice forward over the past several decades. In the 2016 election, however, it was not race but generation that was the dynamic factor among left-leaning women. Women like me, who experienced many cultural battles in the gender wars firsthand from the first scornful comments that journalists had heaped on womens libbers, to the public shaming of Anita Hill, to the renewed threats to bodily rights that we thought we had won decades earlier brought to the 2016 campaign a personal knowledge of the fragility of feminist accomplishments and an identification with Hillary that was deeper and longer than any current headlines.
We may have winced as I did when Madeleine Albright quoted a coffee-cup version of feminism or Hillary said deal me in. But we understood that behind every seeming appeal to sisterhood was the history of what was indeed a revolution and one that was far from over. We knew the role Hillary had played in that revolution, and the price she had paid for it. Many of us, too, had followed Clinton through the course of her public career, had read her autobiography, and knew very well that the accusation that she had come to issues concerning racial and economic justice late and for political purposes was among the most extraordinary fabrications of the campaign.
Many younger women, on the other hand no less feminist, no less committed to gender equality had formed their ideas about the Clintons, as Savannah Barker reminds us, in the shadow of 20 years of relentless personal and political attacks. Few of them as I know from decades of teaching courses on feminism, gender issues, and the social movements of the 60s were aware of the living history (to borrow Hillarys phrase) that shaped the woman herself.

These young women werent around when the GOP, appalled that liberals like the Clintons had somehow grabbed political power, began a series of witchhunts that have never ended. (Hillary was correct: it has been a vast rightwing conspiracy, from the Spectatormagazines Arkansas Project, designed specifically to take Bill Clinton down, to Kenneth Starrs relentless digging into Bills private life, to the Benghazi and email investigations.)
They hadnt experienced a decade of culture wars in which feminists efforts to bring histories of gender and race struggle into the educational curriculum were reduced to a species of political correctness. They didnt witness the complicated story of how the 1994 crime bill came to be passed or the origins of the super-predator label (not coined by Hillary and not referring to black youth, but rather to powerful, older drug dealers).
It isnt necessary, of course, to have firsthand knowledge of history in order to have an informed idea of events and issues. When it came to Hillary Clinton, however, sorting out fact from politically motivated fiction was a difficult task, particularly if ones knowledge was filtered through the medium of election-year battles.
The 2016 election was no academically rigorous history course; it was dominated by versions of Hillary Clinton constructed by her political opponents and transmitted by reporters who usually dont see offering context as their job and dont have the time (or, for some, the inclination) to sort fact from fiction. And then, too, after decades of harsh schooling in the ways of politics and the media, Hillary herself was no longer the outspoken feminist who chastised reporters when they questioned her life choices, but a cautious campaigner who measured her words with care.
I knew just what one of my graduate students meant when I asked her how millennial feminists saw Hillary and she said a white lady. A white woman herself, she wasnt referring to the colour of Hillarys skin, or even her racial politics, but rather what was perceived as her membership in the dominant class, all cleaned up and normalised, aligned with establishment power rather than the forces of resistance, and stylistically coded (her tightly coiffed hair; her neat, boring pantsuits; her circumspection) with her membership in that class. When I looked at Hillary, I saw someone very different but I understood the basis for my students perception.

Any rift between feminist generations, however, would almost certainly have been healed by Donald Trumps outrageous comments and behavior, had younger progressives not become bonded, during the primary, to a Democratic male hero who both supported the issues they were most passionate about and offered young women independence from the stale and, in their view, defunct feminist past. These young women werent going to rush to order a plastic woman card for a candidate that had been portrayed by their hero as a hack of the establishment. They didnt believe in sisterhood a relic of a time when, as they had been told (often in womens studies courses) privileged, white feminists clasped hands in imagined gender solidarity, ignoring racial injustice and the problems of the working class.
They didnt want to be dealt any cards at a bridge game organised by Gloria Steinem or Madeleine Albright or Hillary Clinton. They wanted Bernie Sanders.
Sanders brands Hillary as establishment
Before I go any further, let me put my own cards on the table. The destruction of Hillary Clinton, I firmly believe, while propelled by a perfect storm of sexism, partisan politics and media madness, was bookended by two immensely powerful assaults. One was the inappropriate, inaccurate and inflammatory interference in the general election by FBI director James Comey. The other occurred much earlier, during the primaries, but its consequences are felt even today. I know I will make some of my younger feminist colleagues (and other left leaners) furious, which was distressing to me then, and still is.

These people, in so many ways, are my natural colleagues, and most are as upset as I am by Trumps victory. But they played a big role in the thin edge (not a landslide, as Trump would have us believe) that gave Trump the election. For while Trump supporters hooted and cheered for their candidate, forgiving him every lie, every crime, every bit of disgusting behaviour, too many young Democrats made it very clear (in newspaper and internet interviews, in polls, and in the mainstream media) that they were only voting for Hillary Clinton as the lesser of two evils, holding their noses, tears still streaming down their faces over the primary defeat of the person they felt truly deserved their votes. Some didnt vote at all. And as much as I am in agreement with many of his ideas, Bernie Sanders splintered and ultimately sabotaged the Democratic party not because he chose to run against Hillary Clinton, but because of howhe ran against her.
Sanders often boasted about the importance of the issues rather than individuals, of not playing dirty politics or running nasty ads in his campaign. And its certainly true that he didnt slime Hillary by bringing Bills sexual accusers forward or by recommending that she be put in jail, as Trump did. He also seemed, at the beginning of the primary season, to be refreshingly dismissive about the email scandal: Enough already about the damned emails! he shouted at the first debate, and I remember thinking Good man, Bernie! Way to go! But within months, taking advantage of justified frustration with politics as usual (a frustration more appropriately aimed at GOP stonewalling of Democratic legislation), Sanders was taking Hillary down in a different way: as an establishment tool and creature of Wall Street.
I think, frankly, he said in January, campaigning in New Hampshire, its hard to be a real progressive and to take on the establishment in a way that I think [it] has to be taken on, when you come as dependent as she has through her super PAC and in other ways on Wall Street and drug-company money.
Progressive. Its a term with a long, twisty history. In the 19th century, it was associated with those who argued for the moral cleansing of the nation. A century ago, both racist Southern Democrats and the founders of the NAACP claimed it for their purposes. The Communist party has described itself as progressive. By the time Sanders argued that Clinton was not a true progressive, the word was not very useful descriptively one can be progressive in some ways and not so progressive in others, and no politician that I know of has ever struck every progressive chord. Context matters, too. As Jonathan Cohn wrote, in May: If Sanders is the standard by which youre going to decide whether a politician is a progressive, then almost nobody from the Democratic party would qualify. Take Sanders out of the equation, and suddenly Clinton looks an awful lot like a mainstream progressive.
For Sanders supporters, however, progressive wasnt an ill-defined, historically malleable label, but rather a badge of honor, a magical talisman for those who considered themselves anti-establishment. It may have been a fallback identifier for pretty much anyone The Nationand its journalistic kin smiled upon (as Michael Kazin described it), but it was an identifier with a great deal of potency, particularly for a younger generation longing for lives organised around something other than job hunting. When Sanders denied that badge of honour to Clinton he wasnt distinguishing his agenda from hers (their positions on most issues were, in reality, pretty similar), he was excluding her from the company of the good and pure and in the process, limiting what counted as progressive causes, too. His list didnt include the struggle for reproductive rights or affordable child care. Nor, at the beginning of his campaign, was there much emphasis on racial justice.

As I watched Sanders enchant the crowds, it was something of a deja vu experience to see a charismatic male politician on stage telling women which issues are and arent progressive. Cultural histories of the 60s rarely acknowledge what a sexist decade it was. We imagine that breaking through the suburban 50s fantasy meant that old-fashioned gender roles and attitudes had been discarded. Far from it.

In fact, in many ways the decade was more male-centric than the 50s; it just privileged a different sort of male. Those men loved having us as uninhibited sexual partners and helpers in their political protests, but they never let us forget who was in charge of creating the platforms or who belonged in the political spotlight.
Working in the south for voting rights, young activists such as Casey Hayden and Mary King had gained sophisticated organising experience and found strong female role models they could respect in the older black women who were such a central part of the civil rights movement. But by the mid-60s, as black nationalism, the student movement and antiwar protests moved to the centre of cultural prominence, white activist women found themselves both unwelcome within black identity politics and demoted within the other movements.
Charged with making coffee while the male politicos speechified, shouted down and humiliated for daring to bring up the issue of gender inequality during rallies and leftist gatherings, their early calls for sexual equality were seen as trivial, hormonally inspired, and counter-revolutionary. Inspired by the Black Panthers to look to their own oppression, women began to speak up about what came to be known as personal politics. But unlike the Panthers, women were told over and over that they had to subordinate their demands to larger causes in the interests of the movement. They found themselves simmering and stewing as boyfriends and husbands defined what was revolutionary, what was worthy, and what was progressive.
It was both an exhilarating and a frustrating time to be an activist woman. Some, like me, dropped out of the fight for a time. Others became more violently countercultural and joined the Weather Underground. Others still became leaders of the emerging womens movement. In 2016, however, many activists saw that movement as part of establishment politics and no longer requiring their revolutionary fervour. As one Sanders supporter wrote:
Yes, equal rights for women and minorities are critically important. To consider these ideals progressive, however, seems pass. At this point, its more fair to suggest they are traditional. Gender and civil rights and equality may remain under attack from the right, but these ideals are positively engrained in two generations of Americans. Progressive voters, at this stage in our young countrys political history, want to challenge corrupt systems. The prison-industrial complex, the military-industrial complex, the financial-industrial complex, and the other lobbies that control our politicians and our government, for example.
Im fairly certain that Sanders himself doesnt see equal rights for women and minorities as so firmly inscribed in our culture as to be traditional or pass. Nonetheless, Sanders gave Clinton no credit for her longstanding progressivism in these areas, while identifying her with the corruption he was dedicated to cleaning up. Organising against the abuses that he made his signature causes was indeed a worthy progressive agenda. Portraying Clinton as the enemy of systemic change, on the other hand, was not only factually incorrect, but proved politically disastrous in the general election.
Sanders was the perfect vehicle to revive political passion both among the older left, revitalised by being on the side of the revolution again, and a younger generation who had yet to experience the sense of rightness, community, and belief in the possibility of radical change that nourished us in the 60s. Here was this guy who had lived through it all, who looked like a grandfather but spoke like a union organiser, who was making it seem possible again but in terms that spoke to the present, to their issues. He was fierce, he was uncompromising, and he wasnt afraid to call out clear enemies, which revolutions always need to rally around. Wall Street. Greed. Big Money. Super PACS. The establishment.

Initially, I liked Bernie Sanders a lot, and identified with him. In terms of class, geography, and religion, I actually have much more in common with him than I do with Hillary Clinton, whose background was solidly middle class, Methodist, and Midwestern. Sanders and I share the same immigrant, working-class Jewish roots. The neighborhood he grew up in in Brooklyn looked very much like the one Id grown up in in Newark, New Jersey. Although Sanders was a few years older than me, we had belonged to the same leftwing groups Sanders while in college, I while in high school. We even went to the same college University of Chicago and I sometimes wondered whether Id seen him on campus when I was a freshman and he a senior. As his campaign took off, and despite my support for Hillary, it made me smile to hear someone who sounded like he could have been a relative deliver speeches to mass audiences.
Sanderss branding of Hillary as establishment, however, seemed vastly unjust and corrosively divisive to me, especially when delivered to a generation that knew very little about her beyond what Bernie told them. Like progressive, establishment is a pretty meaningless term, particularly when lobbed at one Washington politician by another. Neither Sanders nor Clinton had been working outside the system.
Appearances to the contrary, Sanders was not a union organizer, but rather a longtime member of the Senate. And if Clinton had more support from the Democratic party, that was due in large part to the relationships she had cultivated over the years, working with others something Sanders was not particularly good at. Nonetheless, for weeks during the early months of the primary, I listened to 19-year-olds and media pundits alike lavish praise on Bernie Sanders for his bold, revolutionary message, and scorn Hillary for being a part of the establishment.
They described him as heart and her as head a bitter irony for those of us familiar with the long history of philosophical, religious, and medical diatribes disqualifying women from leadership positions on the basis of our less-disciplined emotions. He was seen as authentic in his progressivism while she was pushed to the left by political expediency as though a lifetime of fighting for equality and childrens rights meant nothing. He was the champion of the working class (conveniently ignoring that black and white women were members, and that their issues were also working class issues), but her longstanding commitments to universal health care, child care, paid sick leave, racial justice, the repeal of the Hyde amendment, and narrowing the wage gap between working men and women apparently evaporated because shed accepted well-paid invitations to speak at Goldman Sachs.
Later, the news media even let Sanders get away with describing Planned Parenthood and NARAL as establishment when he didnt get their endorsement. They made little of it when he described abortion as a social issue (as though loss of control over ones reproductive life has no impact on ones economic survival). They accepted, without question, his descriptions of himself as an activist for feminist causes, when all he had done was vote the right way in the Senate. They posted pictures of him being arrested at a protest against the University of Chicagos real estate investments, while making no mention of the work Hillary had done, when she was the same age, investigating racist housing practices with Marian Wright Edelman. Clintons emails and her trust problems were the only stories about her they were interested in reporting.
