daily genshin advice 1/6 - let's talk about split-scaling and the strongbox!

Hello everybody! I was a bit out of ideas earlier but I feel very motivated to post after seeing what ya'll suggested!! So today, I'll be talking about split-scaling characters and the artifact strongbox! Let's begin

You might have noticed that some characters have multiple scalings between their abilities or sometimes multiple within each one! Today I'll be talking about why this is sometimes a problem and why it's sometimes a great thing!

Let's look at some examples

Albedo's skill scales off of DEF but his burst scales off of ATK

Dehya's burst and skill deal damage based on both her HP and her ATK

Dori's damage scales off of ATK but her healing scales off of HP

Thoma's shield scales off of HP but his damage scales off of ATK

Nahida's skill deals damage based on both her EM and her ATK

Now, why is this often bad?

Well, investing in multiple stats means none of them will be optimal. You can't max out both your HP and your ATK.

But what you can do is choose a stat. Pick 1 role that a character will occupy and invest in the stat that helps you with that. Is your Thoma a shielder or a Sub-DPS? Is Dori a healer or for off-field damage?

But, there are cases where split scaling is good

Let's look at Nahida and Alhaitham, both of whom deal damage based off of ATK and EM.

Both of these characters are Dendro and usually have an Electro character in their team. Electro allows for Spread which increases damage based on EM. Now, both Nahida and Alhaitham prefer building EM.

So, why is split scaling good in this case? Because both stats increase their damage, having a secondary stat they scale off of (attack) just acts as an extra bonus! Unlike DEF or HP rolls, ATK rolls on these characters are actually helpful even if they aren't the main stat being built

In path 3.0 the strongbox got a MASSIVE buff. It went from having 4 sets to having 14! And in 4.0, it got 8 new sets! The strongbox is great because it allows you to basically farm 3 sets at once. 2 from whatever domain you're in and a third from foddering your bad pieces! In my opinion, the current strongbox system really complements the path Genshin has taken with its artifact farming

In the past 2 and kinda 3 regions, we've seen "main domains" with sets that almost every character from that region wants and then a few extra domains for more niche sets. This new pattern means that you can farm the main set for a region and then strongbox for any other set you want

I think the artifacts that best fit this system are:

Husk of Opulent Dreams

Ocean-Hued Clam

Vermillion Hereafter

Echoes of an Offering

These fit the strongbox the best imo because they are rather niche so its a bit of a waste of resin to famr them, especially if the other set is useless for your account

with that out of the way, let's talk about the best sets to strongbox!!

╰┈➤ Emblem. Emblem is just an insanely broken set that a TON of characters use. Off the top of my head, I can think of 5 different characters who use it

╰┈➤ Tenacity of the Millileth. One of my favorite sets so I'm a bit biased. Tenacity is just so nice to have around because a few characters like it and its not that good to farm. It's living in a domain with bloodstained chivalry which like, nobody uses off the top of my head

╰┈➤ Viridescent Venerer. A set that literally every Anemo support uses. Not great to farm because it's with Maiden but definitely strongbox for a set or two if you don't have one!

╰┈➤ Noblesse Oblige. One of the OG strongbox sets but so so many characters can run it. Noblesse turns anybody into a support

╰┈➤ Honorable mention: Thundering Fury. Previously a pretty bad set but after dendro became quite strong! Not that good to farm because the set it comes with, thundersoother isn't used by anyone anymore

Building Dendro: My Yaoyao Build & Comps

Disclaimer: This isn’t me telling anyone how to build their Yaoyao or how her multipliers are gonna work and blah blah blah. I suck at math and I don’t like telling people what to do. I just like Dendro, its characters, and wanna share my build ideas. None of this is based on meta, just what I wanna do with the character.

The new players are so lucky to not know the pain of waiting two years for Yaoyao and Baizhu thinking they’d be the first Dendro characters in the game, only to find out ‘nah’. But whatever, one of the two of them is finally here and we can rejoice because this radish girl is adorable.

She’s really fun to use with her radish throwing mechanic and it’s cute seeing the little flowers fly when they make contact with something.

Anyway let’s jump into the build for the next installment in the greenhouse I’m out here trying to build with all these Dendro characters.

Artifacts

I decided to focus on a complete healer build for my Yaoyao and while it might not be the most practical, she’s rocking the 4pc Ocean-Hued Clam set.

I think that’s pretty self-explanatory on its own, the bubble can really come in clutch at the most unexpected times!

Constellations

I plan on getting Yaoyao to C6 one day, but for now she rests at a humble C2. Trust me when I say the huge radish she gets from her C6 is really useful but other than that, I believe she’s fully functional at C0. I just want the radish baby to rock out her full set.

For me.

Weapon

Polearms are probably my least developed weapons of choice so I don’t have a lot to choose from, but for now until I get something better Yaoyao is using the Wavebreaker’s Fin from the Watatsumi series. The weapon is pretty, I just wish it matched Yaoyao’s aesthetic more.

Team Comps

nahida (main dps)

cyno (sub-dps, occasional main dps)

yaoyao (healer)

yae miko (sub-dps)

The team I use for Friendship. Y’all understand the relationship between Nahida and Miko at this point, Yaoyao is a pretty good healer as well so I have fun tossing her radishes all over the place. Her build is still a work-in-progress though so her post won’t be coming out for a while.

Cyno is there to look pretty but I enjoy using him from time to time as a main DPS to shake things up in the party. His burst is really cool and I enjoy his character. That’s enough reason to put him in the party for me.

i've seen some people saying stuff like "oh, maybe dehya will get better in the future. everybody was saying that kokomi and kuki shinobu were bad but look at them now"

and yes. i hope that dehya gets at least some kind of buff

but i'm doubtful that there are many ways they could improve dehya without buffing her directly - at least not like kokomi or kuki

"why is that?" you ask. it's simple. let us look at what kuki and kokomi have that dehya doesn't:

on release, there was a fair amount of negative reception towards kokomi, particularly on the fact that she has -100 crit rate. in fact, some of her current best teams have only been introduced with new characters, such as shenhe for freeze variants, and dendro (nilou, in particular) for dendro teams

it's true that dendro has been a buff for a number of previously underwhelming characters, but the reason why kokomi has worked well in those newer teams is because hydro is such a useful element in so many reactions (like freeze and bloom) while also providing a copious amount of healing (and potentially extra damage via clam set), allowing the team to survive the self-damage from bloom and burgeon (and, more importantly, can out-heal most incoming damage)

dehya, on the other hand, while also having an elemental skill with some uptime issues, does not provide nearly as much utility to the entire team as kokomi does - rather than healing the active character, she just takes some of that damage in their place, and has very little elemental application - where kokomi can be useful by providing extra hydro and healing for maintaining elemental reactions, all dehya does is make you take slightly less damage, and likely mess up more reactions than she helps with (pyro as a supportive element only really benefits vaporize and melt, which both require a significant rate of application, and benefit from team-wide EM and ATK buffs that characters other than dehya can provide - as a damage-dealing element, pyro in burgeon favours a high rate of application like thoma's burst, due to the icd on enemies taking transformative reaction dmg, or a number of strong attacks that can be amplified with vaporize or melt, as is the case with yoimiya, hu tao, or diluc - unfortunately, dehya just does not have good enough damage multipliers, and her icd and incompatibility with hydro applicators like yelan and xingqiu really limits her damage-dealing potential)

and it's a similar story with kuki shinobu - before dendro, there was very little use for a frequent electro application with low base dmg, as there was only really electro-charged and overloaded (and superconduct) where such a thing was beneficial (and it certainly wasn't an efficient use of a team slot). now, with catalyze, and especially hyperbloom, kuki can provide a whole lot of off-field damage, healing, and/or elemental application to allow an number of teams to comfortably clear difficult challenges

and that's the thing: both of these characters are also healers. they spec most of their utility into keeping the active character alive, while also providing a meaningful amount of elemental application for useful reactions.

dehya, on the other hand, only offers a token amount of defensive utility through her damage sharing and super-armour, while the rest of her kit is delegated into Doing Damage By Herself, rather than allowing for any good team-wide buffs (other than maybe tenacity of the millelith's 20% atk)

for there to be such a major comeback for dehya as there was for kokomi and kuki shinobu, there would probably also need to be a new reaction or untapped potential where there was none before

such a thing seems unlikely, however, because there won't be an 8th element being added, nor is there much chance for a new pyro reaction or changes to the way existing ones function. and there is not many ways that dehya's damage can be buffed without also buffing stronger characters like hu tao, xiangling, yelan, or xiao even more

let's hope they figure something out. or they just buff dehya. because i think a bit of actual game balance in this game might be nice for a change

Sangonomiya Kokomi Build Guide

Overview

Updated as of 3.6

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a build guide here. Sorry for the hiatus!

Sangonomiya Kokomi is a character who has received mixed attention across the player base, mainly due to her inability to crit. It’s also a common held belief that healers lose their viability in the late game/abyss since shields are a thing and more experienced players can dodge better/predict AI patterns easier. For these reasons Kokomi has been given the reputation as somewhat of a meme character to use.

Personally I find the Kokomi slander to be in poor taste, as well as without forethought. As the game continues to add more interesting mechanics and concepts such as “true damage” which ignores resistance and shields, as well as her new artifact set (Ocean-Hued Clam) Kokomi’s role in the game is becoming more and more solidified. She’s looking to be a rather future proof support unit!

Edit: Would you look at that? I was right and the Kokomi haters are now Kokomi wanters! On top of being an extremely f2p friendly unit, Kokomi has proven to be the premium hydro option in a variety of comps, outside of vape. The addition of Dendro was a huge buff for many existing characters, and Kokomi is arguably one of the characters who benefited from Dendro the most! Kokomi is such a clutch unit to have and if you’re a new player or f2p I absolutely recommend her (even if you have already have Barbara!)

Role

Sangonomiya Kokomi is first and foremost a healer, but she has extra utility in her hydro application and has access to party buffs through weapon and artifact choices. She’s a direct upgrade from Barbara, and she can even comfortably replace Mona in several comps as well as enable all new comps.

Thanks to a myriad of weapon and artifact choices as well as just having one of the simplest play styles in the game, Kokomi can perform almost any role with passable performance. Her AoE hydro application is paramount in freeze/bloom/electro-charged team compositions where she can be the drive, and her sheer amount of healing makes things like corrosion a legitimate non-issue.

Talents & Constellations

I recommend taking Kokomi to Lv.90 for higher base HP. For talents you can focus on her elemental skill and elemental burst. These talents are very much satisfactory at Lv 8. You may also level up her autos if you want more damage during her burst window. Crowning doesn’t gain you much value in the grand scheme of things so I’d only crown her if she’s your main.

Kokomi’s constellations give her better damage and healing, but are very much not necessary. She does everything you need her to do at c0. I only recommend getting constellations for this character if you just really really like her and want her to be the absolute best she can be.

Weapons

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Everlasting Moonglow; Jadefall Splendor; A Thousand Floating Dreams

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Sacrificial Fragments; Prototype Amber; Hakushin Ring

⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayer; Magic Guide

The weapon you go with ultimately depends on her team composition and what you want Kokomi to do. In general you want high HP for healing and damage, and ER so she can burst off CD. If you’re using Kokomi in a bloom team she is a very reliable trigger so you want to prioritize Elemental Mastery on her.

Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers and Sacrificial Fragments are Kokomi’s most recommended weapon options. Not only is TTODS easy to obtain and refine, but it’s a good support weapon in general, providing a respectable 48% atk buff to whoever swaps in after her when she switches out of battle. Even in a more DPS oriented role, Kokomi benefits from the HP% sub stat. Sacrificial Fragments provides Kokomi a whopping 221 Elemental Mastery and the passive resets her skill CD so she can move her jellyfish around more freely! If you don’t have Sacrificial Fragments Magic Guide is still a very consistent option for bloom!

Prototype Amber is really consistent as a Hydro DPS option. It’s craftable and it’s passive contributes to Ocena Hued Clam bubble damage! At R5, PA is comparable Moonglow at R1 in terms of damage.

I do not personally recommend rolling for Everlasting Moonglow or any 5 star weapon for Kokomi. All of her more f2p options are just so comparable or outright better. Prototype Amber is only marginally weaker than Moonglow in terms of her personal hydro damage. TTODS is just a goated support weapon and Sac Frags lets her do big blooms.

Hakushin Ring can be used over Prototype Amber in taser comps with Beidou/Raiden Shogun. It’s

Artifacts

As with weapons, Kokomi has many options and it just does a what you need her to do.

(4pc Ocean Hued Clam)

This is imo her BiS option. It offers both healing and extra dmg from its passive. A Kokomi with 30k+ HP and ~60% healing bonus can easily hit for 20k+ per bubble pop. That’s 20k in AoE damage every 3s…

( 4pc Tenacity of the Millelith & 4pc Deepwood Memories )

These are both great options if you’re looking purely for more support. Kokomi can easily maintain the passives, buffing party members atk%/debuffing enemy dendro resistance respectively. I personally think OHC bubble damage offers overall more value than Tenacity, but if you’re looking for big pp numbers on your main DPS there’s merit to it. Deepwood is required in any dendro composition so if no other character is running it then Kokomi can definitely run it.

Stats

For stats you always wanna shoot for ~150% ER at minimum and a solid 30k HP. Outside of Bloom Comps Elemental Mastery significantly loses value, so you can increase those goals to 170% and 40k respectively. In Bloom Comps you wanna shoot for around 700-1000 Elemental Mastery depending on how many sources of EM are in the party.

Sands - HP%, Energy Recharge or Elemental Mastery

Even in Bloom comps I think there’s merit to running HP or ER over Elemental Mastery on the sands. It ultimately comes down to sub stats and now many buffs you have in the party, but HP sands will help a lot with heals and general tankiness. Energy Recharge is crucial even if you’re only using her burst to reset the Jellyfish duration.

Goblet - HP%, Hydro DMG, or Elemental Mastery

HP gives you more healing, Hydro Dmg increases Kokomi’s personal DMG and Elemental Mastery increases her Bloom damage. In general I’d go with Hydro for Freeze comps and Elemental Mastery for Bloom. Electro-Charge you can get away with either.

Circlet - Healing Bonus or Elemental Mastery

Healing Bonus is always better than HP% and you should only run HP% if you don’t have a Healing Bonus or Elemental Mastery Circlet . As with the other pieces, Elemental Mastery is better for Bloom while Healing Bonus is better for most other comps.

Team Comps and Pairings

Kokomi fits into pretty much any team since she’s a healer and has access TToD. She fits exceptionally well in taser, freeze, and bloom comps where her hydro aura is preferred for the desired reactions.

Team Cores

Freeze

- Kokomi supports Cryo DPS character in this comp.

- Cryo Resonance is a necessity for this comp to work. Your main Cryo DPS unit should also be using Blizzard Strayer artifact set.

- Ocean Hued Clam or Tenacity sets

Taser (Electro-Charge)

- If you’re running Beidou she needs a dedicated battery. Fischl is the recommended option for this but Raiden Shogun works too. Due note that Raiden Shogun cannot proc Beidou’s burst while in Musou Isshin state.

- Sucrose is a better driver than Kokomi since she can trigger swirl with her autos. This means Sucrose should be the one on field “delivering damage” most of the time.

- If you aren’t running Beidou you can comfortably run Xingqiu for Hydro resonance and to battery Kokomi over a second electro unit

- Ocean Hued Clam is preferred in this team comp

Sukokomon

- A high damage ceiling team that consists of Sucrose, Fischl, Xiangling and Kokomi. The comp does require all the characters listed here for it to work properly

- Sucrose is the true carry here. Build her with as much EM as possible and take her to Lv 90. Sac Fragments or Magic Guide are her best weapon options

- drop all three “Pokémon” on the field and swirl/cc with sucrose. Kokomi should only be on field to drop her jellyfish or when she uses her burst. TToD is the recommended weapon here to buff Xiangling or Fischl’s attack

- Ocean Hued Clam or Tenacity of the Millelith

Bloom

- In Bloom, Kokomi’s build requirements change quite a bit as she is a very reliable trigger for bloom. This means a good portion of the Dendro Cores created by Bloom will deal damage based on Kokomi’s Elemental Mastery.

- Nilou & Nahida are the premium teammates for this comp. Nilou enables the hell out of bloom and Nahida is just the best dendro unit in the game. You can certainly make Bloom work without these two characters, through. Kaveh in particular works great for Bloom comps and Collei, YaoYao, Alhaitham, and Dendro Traveler all slot well into bloom as well.

- In general you want Dendro Resonance for the extra EM. You can also run Hydro Resonance if Nilou is in the team for the extra HP. You and also run a Cryo character (if Nilou isnt in the team) to make a “fridge” comp.

Hyperbloom & Burgeon

- Unlike Bloom, Hyperbloom and Burgeon scale off the Elemental Mastery of the Electro or Pyro unit who triggered the reaction respectively.

- The best Hyperbloom triggers are Kuki Shinbonu, Yae Miko, Fischl. and Raiden Shogun. Be sure to stack EM for hyperbloom damage specifically.

- Currently only Thoma can reliably trigger Burgeon without triggering burning first. Same as above, stack EM on Thoma

Gameplay Tips

In general Kokomi is very simple to play. You just use her elemental skill to apply hydro to enemies as well heal nearby party members. When her energy is full you can use her elemental burst to heal party members with her normal attacks. You can also refresh the duration of her jellyfish by using her burst, but do be aware this does not reset the skill’s CD, therefore the jellyfish cannot be relocated with this method.

Kokomi’s jellyfish snapshots, meaning if she casts her skill during her burst it will keep the increased HP scaling, even if her burst ends or she switches out. You can use this to your advantage in situations where you want better off field damage or healing but prefer to keep your main DPS on the field.

Conclusion

Overall, Kokomi is a fantastic support and sub DPS character who has aged like fine wine. As a healer she allows for flexibility and comfort in her team compositions and thanks to OHC artifact set she makes a very good sub DPS as well. She comfortably fits into popular comps such as Nilou Bloom, Morgana where she can replace Mona and also enables completely unique teams like Sukokomon. Overall, she’s the best mermaid queen and whether you need a healer or just someone to keep enemies wet, Kokomi will do a phenomenal job at both!

Note, this AU was inspired by superfluous-Vanitas tribal AU art. Note i have added my own plot line, ideas, and different creatures that hail from the games The Isle and Ark: Survival Evolved. Thus, the creatures/mounts that that characters have in this AU are NOT to be changed unless its been stated in the canon AU story line.

Any and all other characters that are mentioned will be in different tribes depending on the story line! If you dont see a character name on any of the lists below, assume they currently do not play a super important role!

Note, information here can be found on the Kingdom Hearts Rp amino and the Kingdom Hearts amino as well, i go by Prince Vanitas in the Kingdom Hearts rp amino and Rox on the Kingdom Hearts aminos.

AU Information:

°This AU takes place during a time where Dinosaurs and people lived at the same time. Though this doesn’t mean there isn’t modern day technology when it comes to the scientific aspect. Meaning the ability to genetically modify dinosaurs is possible. However it’s only possible if the tribe has the means and knowledge. This takes the ideas of taming dinosaurs from the game known as Ark: Survival Evolved and some ideas, creatures and things of the like from the horror survival game The Isle. I do not take credit for the creatures from either of these games or the Kingdom Hearts series. This AU was inspired by someones art of a tribe AU for the TerraVan ship you can find them on Tumblr as superfluous-Vaniats so go check them out, give em some love!

World Information:

Based on the Idea that Dinosaurs and humans lived at the same time, this tribe AU revolves around Vanitas, the adopted child to the Seeker’s Tribe leader Xehanort, and his Mount a odd looking ( Hyperendocrin) T-Rex who goes by the name of Hypo. In an effort to cease a constant tribe war between the Guardians Tribe ran by Tribe leader Eraqus, the two have decided on an arranged marriage between Vanitas and Eraqus’ own child; Terra. Though, while Vanitas seems to easily go along with the plan, Terra doesn’t. As the weeks go by, Terra and Vanitas learn more about each other and about the past Vanitas can’t seem to remember about himself.

Tribes:

Seekers Tribe:

A tribe that specializes in Predator taming. This by far one of the larger Tribes that can be found in the area, and a Tribe who’s leader leads with a firm, iron fist. Their skills in taming predator type creatures makes them a force to be reckoned with. The people from this tribe are seen as cynical, cunning, cold and distant. They take habbitance in the wide open plains of the land, and a medium sized portion of the dense forests by the plains. Though there seems to be something more…sinister with it’s tribe leader then what meets the eye.

Seekers Tribe Notable Members:

Xehanort:

A mysterious old man who seems to always know more then what he lets on. The tribe leader who rules with an iron fist. With golden eyes he watches over his tried silently all while training his somewhat rebellious adopted child. Though he is anything but a loving man, strict and off cold, he is not a tribe leader to be messed with.

Vanitas:

Child to the Seekers Tribe leader, local and resident trouble maker, owner of a powerful mount; Vanitas is the next in line to rule the Seekers Tribe. Taken in at a young age after he and his strange T-Rex (who was a just a young as Vanitas was at the time) starving and wounded by none other then Xehanort himself. Seeming to be a sort of ‘freak’ among his own tribe members, Vanitas is often found out in the dense woods alone or out in the grassy plains of his tribe’s territory with his T-Rex Mount; Hypo. He is to be wed to the son of another tribe’s leader to merge the two together and end a constant war they seem to be at.

Isa:

Resident voice of reason to both Vanitas and Lea, and seeming to be one of only two people in the entire tribe who sees Vanitas as a friend. Head of the Allosaurus hunting party, he keeps a cool head and logical thinking to almost everything he does. He may seem distant and cold, but once one gets past that hard exterior he’s kind and gives sound advice to any who seek nothing but honest answers and opinions.

Lea:

Second in command of the Allosaurus hunting party; Lea is all spitfire personality and a unpredictable person over all. He happens to also be Isa’s significant other making their Mounts the Alpha pair that run the pack. He also is Vanitas’ best friend and usually the one who is ride or die with him. IvoryCoast, the Imperial, laid his ears flat in annoyance over all this, excitement, over mere training races. But it seemed that the Guardians training to serve the Queen was not a common thing, plus the fort didn’t get much entertainment so he could not begrudge his soldiers from celebrating.

No, that was not his real annoyance. The female Guardian, BlackGhost, gracefully landed to the ground- the winner once again- and bowed modestly to the crowd’s roars of approval. Her training partner stood in the shadows, his wings low as he gasped in great breathes of air.

IvoryCoast watched CrownOfThorns closely, he saw the look he gave BlackGhost and knew his worries were justified. After their duties with AquaMarina, it seemed a competition had arisen between the pair, or maybe a feud would be a more accurate choice of words. The pair were fighting for attention, to show off who was the best and thus most deserving of being SeaQueen’s Guardian. Not that it mattered since both would become such, and should be working as a team. They competed as they trained, and so far both had shown different aptitudes- BlackGhost showing great abilities in magic and CrownOfThorns in physical combat. But flight and agility had been the new tie breaker, with BlackGhost easily proving to be the victor again and again. IvoryCoast lifted his head above the crowd and sounded his voice,

“You have had your fun my fellow dragons, but it past time all of you got back to your stations.”

He eyed the guards who gave the looks of rabbits caught by a hainu, and they quickly dispersed back to the fort. He turned his stern gaze to his students, who both quickly bowed to him.

“You two shall also both go back to the fort, get some food, warmth, and rest. We have been training all morning and the Lightweaver’s light shall soon be at its height.”

BlackGhost stretched and began her jaunt to the Fallen Star Fort, but CrownOfThorns stayed frozen in his tracts. IvoryCoast tilted his head at the Guardian and awaited the reason for his hesitation. The Guardian stood at attention and with a look of determination crossing his features.

“Lieutenant IvoryCoast, I wish to request that I stay and train for a little longer!”

IvoryCoast pretended to mull over this request, but he knew what the outcome would be. Many new recruits went through this phase and it was better for him to learn sooner rather than later.

“You have my permission to train for an hour more, BlackGhost. Be back before the dinner horns sound.”

IvoryCoast stood with TidalKing upon the fort’s battlements, and shook his head in both amazement and vexation at the sight before him. Dusk was a purple bruise on the sky and the fort’s torches were being lit for the coming night. In the last of embers of the day one could make out the form of a Guardian, slowly making circles again and again.

“So he has been at it for hours you say, eh IvoryCoast?”

IvoryCoast nodded, “From the afternoon sun to the night now. He is trying to prove his worth, the young fool.”

A chuckle arose from the Ridgeback, “Ah yes, but a strong and determined fool that he is. Not many could last so long in the cold.”

IvoryCoast scoffed at the remark, “The Skydancers who cross the Sea of a Thousand Currents every year on wing would laugh at his efforts.”

He could feel TidalKing’s amused eyes upon him and heat raced to his face…he had been rude to a superior officer! He quickly bowed with an apology on his lips before the Ridgeback waved his claws in a dismissing gesture.

“You are right, those gulls might laugh at him, but it is no small feat for a dragon his size to fly that long without stopping. But we need to get to the pearl of this clam, I rather not have him drop from the sky and have him in the healer’s den for months on end. How shall we resolve this issue?”

The sound of the gate creaking open turned both their heads, just in time to see BlackGhost already winging to the sky. The guards pulled the gate closed and TidalKing laughed heartily,

“Well it seems the answer is already flying to its solution! Hopefully these two shall figure this whole thing out without bloodshed and broken wings.”

BlackGhost swiftly dived down near CrownofThorns, her backwind sending him cursing and tumbling from the sky. He landed poorly, his legs giving out on him and he rolled to the ground. Her own landing was much easier, and she set to gathering driftwood for a small fire. She had hoped the flight would settle her thoughts over Thorns actions and her own feelings, but the winds had not given her a whisper of an answer. The rough voice of Thorns pulled her out of her actions,

“Aren’t you even going to ask if I’m hurt or need help?”

She pulled the logs together and grabbed the firestarter from her pouch. She tried to keep her tone even, but a small bit of her own bitterness slipped in,

“I do not ask about the harm that you caused by your own actions.”

A snarl made her eyes upward to Thorn’s attempt to flare his wings in anger, that in turn lead to him wincing in pain and pulling them back. The mix feelings of worry, fear, anger, and guilt rose to her thoughts. Her words had been a lie, it had been her actions that had caused this- not his. She started the fire and feed it twigs, letting the silence grow between them. It was BlackGhost who broke it, but it was a murmur,

“I am a fool, a worthless failure of a fool.”

She choked back a keening cry, those had been the words she had used so long ago, words that she had berated herself and still haunted her mind. What would of she had said to her former self? What were words he, no, the she needed to hear?

“A fool who knows his weaknesses is smarter than a king who only knows his strengths.”

She added more wood to the fire, and moved a bit closer to Thorns. He looked at her, his back slouched and his head low. He was no longer the prideful fellow who had flaunted himself across the fort, and it scorched her heart to see him like this.

“I should have told you that Mirror was lying. I should have encouraged you when I saw you faltering while flying today. I was just so full of joy that I was finally….”

Her speech trailed off, and Thorns placed a heavy claw on her shoulder. She sighed and leaned into him, then eased off him as he gasped a bit in pain. She began to pull away, and he tugged her back to a different position off his wing. The fire crackled in its small warmth and she pulled strength from its determined fight against the cold.

“Once upon a time a dragoness was in a mage guild. The guild required strict training, day and night the dragoness would work. But no matter how hard she worked it seemed that there was always another who was better than her, smarter, wiser, stronger than her. The dragoness despaired and worked even harder, forsaking sleep and food for study. Then the day came for a great test of magic and since she was so exhausted she failed miserably and was kicked out of the guild.”

She could feel the hot tears of shame running down her face, she had been such a fool. Thorn pulled her head to his chest and she wept to the sounds of his heartbeat. His voice rumbled to her fins,

“That guild was filled with fools to send away such a dragoness. You are truly a marvelous dragon, and beautiful and intelligent and…”

He coughed as she looked up at him with a glowing feeling amazement. She touched her muzzle to his in a kiss and his eyes opened in surprise before closing to lean into the kiss. She broke from the embrace with a smile at his still closed eyes. They fluttered open to their brilliant purple and he stepped away. The fire was beginning to die and the moon and stars gave off their soft light in the dark sky. But the beauty of such was called away by the swift chill of the wind and they both shivered. Thorns sighed,

“It past time for us to be home, like naughty hatchies we must go before the Lieutenant and explain out absence.”

He made to put out the fire when she grabbed him by the arm. She raised her tail and waggled her hips, and gave what she hoped was a seductive smile,

“Well the Lieutenant doesn’t know how long it is going to take us to get back does he?”

Her response was met by Thorns grabbing another bunch of logs for the fire before he turned to her, beaming with joy.
