Turnips
Lots of younger Cracker family fluff, inspired by and sorta a follow-up fic to something @captmickey wrote here. Enjoy!

Rosie and Graham came through the door carrying bags of groceries - and a hidden guest, courtesy of Graham's quick but well-maintained scheme. His mom got to work setting out everything onto the counter. Meanwhile, he made a mad dash to his bedroom to check on his new friend.
Graham clambered onto one of the beds and carefully took Triumph out from where he'd stowed him away. Graham scratched behind Triumph's ears, as if to say, "Hope the ride home wasn't too bumpy," without speaking out loud. After all, the little guy was his secret now, and he wasn't used to keeping secrets as big - or as small - as this. He had to be careful about this.
Triumph gave a gloomy warble. Apparently whatever merchant was responsible for caging Triumph also forgot to feed him, and Graham's mom made it very clear that nobody should skip out on a meal. Speaking of meals, Graham's stomach was complaining as well - quite audibly, too. A good time to grab something to eat! Although… Graham wasn't exactly sure what gerbil-hamster-whatevers ate. He could figure that out on the way, though.
Graham hopped out of bed, cupping Triumph in his hands, when he heard approaching footsteps. He hastily tucked Triumph in his tunic.
"I heard you and mom came back from town!" Anisette greeted as she rounded the corner. She knelt to Graham's level. "How did it go?"
Graham simply recited the usual short "Good," although a bit more absentminded this time. He wanted to tell somebody so badly, but he didn't know how to break it to them. Within his tunic, Triumph wriggled, inciting a giggle and bringing Graham back to from his thoughts.
Anisette ruffled Graham's hair. "Glad to hear you're in a good mood. I just wanted to see if you wanted to help me check on the radishes. They're in season!"
Graham nodded eagerly. Maybe Triumph would like to try some of their radishes. Triumph seemed to agree too, chirping with enthusiasm. Graham quickly shushed Triumph.
Anisette whipped around. "What was that sound?"
Graham fidgeted with the cuffs of his shirt. He jumped a little when Triumph squeaked again.
"Aw, do you have the hiccups?" She teased. Almost about to deny the claim, Graham decided that he could play along. He nodded.
"C'mon, I'll get you some water," Anisette said as she held Graham's hand. "And you know… the best way to cure hiccups is a good scare."
"Scare?" Graham puffed out his chest a bit "I'm never scared."
"Well we'll see about that…"
They walked out into the field, Graham rushing ahead of his bigger sister. He crouched down near the radishes, turning over the leaves and checking how tall they were to see if they were ready for picking. Triumph peeked out and sniffed the green shoots with anticipation. "Do you want a radish?" Graham whispered. Triumph chirped. Grinning, Graham grabbed one of the larger leaves and pulled, pushing his feet hard on the dirt. What Graham didn't notice was the figure approaching behind him...
"Roar!" She grasped Graham's shoulders, the scare causing Graham and Anisette to fall on their bums. Triumph squealed, hanging with his life onto the leaf of the radish.
Anisette scanned the surrounding area. "Okay, I don't think that one was a hiccup." Graham's heart skipped a beat when he couldn't feel Triumph from within his tunic. Both siblings were drawn to another trill from the small orange creature nibbling on a radish sprig.
While Graham was scrambling to get Triumph, Anisette was, unfortunately, much more agile with longer legs. She had that sort of wild, determined glint in her eyes after spotting the creature. "Oh, hello, little fella!" Anisette cooed, bending down to try getting a better look at the baby animal's face.
Graham reached a hand out. "Don't hurt Triumph!"
"Triumph, huh? That's a very clever name." She chuckled, then turned to her little brother with a playful smirk. "Wonder how he got here."
That made Graham go rose pink, hiding like a turtle within his tunic. He peeked out to spot his curious sister still staring at him. "I rescued him from a guy…" He mumbled.
"Wow, a successful rescue mission? Do tell me more."
Stars in his eyes, Graham recalled the suspicious merchant, with the covered cages and the one that caught his eye. He told of his plan to deceive the merchant before setting the animal free. How Triumph practically followed Graham home.
"He sounds hungry." He concluded his story.
Anisette took in the story and the concern all at once. "Tell you what, we can take this radish and go chop it up so little Triumph can eat," She explained, "And while that's going on, we can convince Mom and everybody else to keep him. Alright with that?"
Graham was reluctant, scared his family wouldn't want another animal roaming around the house. Yet, Annie was eager to have Triumph join the household, a good sign that the rest of his family would follow suit. Graham bounced in place, nodding and giggling.
Anisette got to work pulling out the radish, and Graham rushed back home to tell the others about the new member of the family.

So, they have gerbil pups at the shop?? But, there's a "first come, first serve" sort of deal (which must be relatively new, bc when I got Cornflake that sort of rule didn't exist), and so I may or may not be able to get a specific pup (or any, depending on how many are available come Saturday morning). I might get two females, so they won't be lonely; the worker stated that male gerbils might not be comfortable around each other after 10 months, which is why I guess I won't get two male pups. I know that sometimes, male pups are fine together when they're older, but I simply do not have the funds to buy another tank + topper and extra bedding in case things go wrong.
Any who, I'm not going to worry about it. There's always the ASPCA, and who knows, I may change my mind about adopting a gerbil this year. Either way, my mom has to take care of it/them when I leave for college.
