First Day Reflection
What 3 projects am I most proud of?
1. Illustration Project Year 2 - I’m proud of this one because I think the final outcome was really polished & concise, I can explain my thought process behind it and feel confident about sharing it with others.
2. Time for Lunch Branding Project Year 2 - I’m proud of this one because I felt very honoured to have my logo & branding idea picked for the final outcome. I feel like it’s a very solid design & the client was super happy with it, so I am too!
3. 70s Photoshoot Shoot Year 2 - I’m proud of this one because I think the photos look really professional and I love the colour palette & composition of my photos. I had a lot of fun working with my model too so that made things even better.
My Top 3 Design Skills
1. Illustration - I think this is my strongest skill because I have a background in traditional painting, drawing, and digital art so I am very confident in this area. I love incorporating an artistic flare into my design work.
2. Branding - I’ve done a few branding projects now and I’ve done some freelance work doing a logo redesign so I am quickly building confidence in this area and really enjoy it too. I like working with typography & different graphic elements to create a concise brand image.
3. Photography - I love getting behind a camera. It’s something that I know I wouldn’t want to do full time but I enjoy incorporating it into my other design work. I think that it is a strength of mine since I have an eye for composition & I can get experimental.
My Top 3 Soft Skills
1. Co-operation - I get along with people easily and work well with other people. I enjoy the energy of having others to bounce ideas off of.
2. Fast Learner - I am pretty quick at picking up new skills, which is helpful when starting a new job or tackling a challenging task.
3. Reliable - I am good at sticking to a schedule & meeting at arranged times. One of my core values is respecting people’s time, so this translates well into reliability.
Future
I am struggling a wee bit to plan out what I’m going to be doing after I graduate. One option I’ve thought about is staying in Dunedin and looking for a job in one of the many design studios around. I think I will try to move away from freelancing for a bit, as I’m keen to settle into a more scheduled job, and gain some industry experience. I also like the idea of working for a business in maintaining their brand & social media side of things. I want to go travelling at some point, and after graduating could be a good option, because once I get my career started it might be hard to find an open spot to go travel for a while. I think doing more artistic projects which incorporate my 3 top design skills will get me going in the right direction for my career. I don’t want to do corporate design work. I’m definitely keen to work with more small or local businesses doing graphic design.
Design Work Style
I think I am more self initiated when working. I like to truck along and figure out what needs to be done next. I don’t enjoy constantly having to check in with somebody, I prefer to just get on with it.
