#that's what being raised on a different planet IS! It's isolating and sad bc that's your FAMILY and you can't even understand them

I really like that they made Jor-El speak Kryptonian and Clark unable to understand him. The whole "aliens speak English" thing that happens in every goddamn media has bothered me all my life. Ik sometimes Clark just gets zapped in the brain for insta-second language but that always felt like a cheap shortcut.
Jor-El had a lot on his mind when he set up that magic spaceship okay. The world was ending and he was trying to do as much as he could before time ran out so he could be there for his son. He was rushing. He likely didn't consider Kal would be raised with a whole different language and not know any Kryptonian nor have anyone to teach him.

So sad that they threw my boy Ryan into the trash. So, so sad. (I was hoping they wouldn't go down the "like father, like son" road but whatever eh)
I don't even know if that's a logical reaction for him. He was raised as a decent, humble human for eight years. Okay, we don't know what Grace told him /did with him. I don't trust her. I think she uses and gaslights the shit out of Butcher for her own revenge/war path. She said it herself that she put a target on Homelander and charged Butcher at him. I wouldn't be surprised if she manipulated Ryan as well, but sadly, we didn't see any of that dynamic.
So, for my understanding Ryan is still a good boy, but with godlike powers which he slowly tries to develop without anyone showing him how (what a parallel to his father). Then he very quickly rebonds with Homelander because Homelander showed his human, honest, vulnerable side. Something Ryan apparently falls for and appreciates bc that boy is soft.
So far so good. Homelander talks to him about being a big overpowered family with his grandfather and everything is going to be great, because what Ryan is looking for is a family after he accidentally killed his mom, and his dad isn't even upset that he killed daddy's girlfriend anymore, things couldn't be better for the kid. But then Ryan meets his granddad, and gramps not only demeans, but attacks his father, the only other being on the planet that seems to understand him and what he's going through. So Ryan attacks his grandfather, and he has all reason to not trust Butcher after everything he said to him, and after bringing his father's attacker with him in the first place. So, logically, Ryan sides with his father, who still seems to have a human, vulnerable side to him, despite being so powerful. And that's what gets to Ryan, that his father truly looks out for him, cares about him, and seems to be a "good guy" (that he reacted like a maniac after Ryan attacked Stormfront and showed up drenched in blood - who the fuck cares). Maybe Ryan thinks that, between Homelander and Butcher, his dad's the lesser evil or something. But there seems to be some kind of love, because Ryan understands what it's like to grow up isolated and like an alien who's so different from anyone else.
But then Homelander murders the citizen, in cold blood, totally unnecessary, in a disproportionate manner. And Ryan is not shocked. He does not scream. He doesn't leave his father's side, questions his personality, his mental state, he's not affected by the act, he's not scared of the power that comes with the abilities, of what a Supe is capable of by their given power. He seems to like it. He suddenly is aware that he is a superior being, a god, how his father put it in season two, when he should be scared of it, given by how he was raised and that he was never exposed to the brutality of how Homelander, well, handles things. It's all new to him. But he seems to have turned into the same sociopath within a heartbeat, although he was raised with a loving mother in a stable environment, unlike his dad. He grew up to be an empathic human being, just as intended, to prevent he wouldn't be the same lunatic as his dad. But it seems that was all for nothing and apparently being a Supe means being a psycho.
When Hughie is Butcher's canary, I was hoping that Ryan would be Homelander's, that last impersonated shrapnel of humanity. Turning Ryan into a second Homelander is the worst choice of writing for that character IMHO. It nullifies everything the show told us about what makes us being human, the importance of a loving family. And if this scene is only meant to be a setup, a cliffhanger that's gonna be changed in the next season, a red herring, then it's clearly not a good one. Except you wanna interpret it as "Ryan loves everything his dad says and does because he's his dad and I don't care that Ryan didn't trust him just one season ago bc daddy's a monster" but that doesn't work for me.

hiii i wanted to share my gintama oc because i've been developing her for literally 5 years at this point and i think i'm finally settled on it!!
here's some artwork i've made for her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so info abt her^__^
her name is anzai yae, and she's an amanto immigrant! she's 24, and she owns a small specialty shop in kabukicho.
at her little shop, she sells a wide variety of things, such as small pasteries and drinks native to her home planet, as well as smoking and alcohol products. her store hours are very strange- she opens up shop at noon, and closes around 2am! she has a garden in the back of the store. because her home planet is not in great communication with earth, her shop is a very popular place to hang out at since it has lots of rare food!
yae isn't techincally allowed to sell her smoking products, since the materials used to make them are unliscensed in edo's official health records. basically, they don't know what it is, so she's not allowed to sell it. because she doesn't have a visa, she can't apply for a license to sell her smoking products. she techincally can't do that much bc of her lack of documentation but she cheeses it barely within the law.
the shinsengumi frequents the store being like "miss anzai you can't sell this", and frequently threatens closing the shop, but after an incident when her home planets government threatened the shinsengumi, they begrudgingly give her a pass to continue selling. she saved their asses, and they were like "damn... we'll give you a pass as long as you don't cause any trouble... as a treat..." which she is very well behaved (within the law) <3
backstory! she's a war criminal! she served during a 5 year long war between her country, the empire, and a neighboring one, the kingdom. she grew up in a monastery, being trained and conditioned since a young age to become a weapon of war. she's very strong, and was nicknamed "executioner anzai" during the war, for her very cutthroat and remorseless style of killing. i have so much lore about this but i will stop here.
she has lots of arrow scars on her abdomen- she rode on a dragon during the war, and was frequently targeted by archers. she was essentially a weapon of war. she used her spear to strike thunder down onto her opponents- her hearing is poor because of this.
because of how she was raised, she has no sense of identity, no hobbies, no desires, no dreams, nothing. all she knows is that she wants to live freely. she wants to be liberated from her past of blind servitutde, and her craftsmanship making jewelry and weapons and food and custom rolled cigars is how her desire to live free has manifested.
she's comically unpredictable. at times she scolds the yorozuya for their antics, and at others she not only joins them, but goes one step higher than them. it seems like her moral compass is broken, the needle pointing in all different random directions. she also tends to do very abnormal things totally nonchalant, thinking that whatever abnormal thing she just did was normal. it's not cultural.
she's frequently seen staring very intensely at people she recognizes, but wont talk to them. she looks sad and dead all the time but she's actually just contemplating very silly and mundane things like if she should treat herself to dessert, or when it's going to rain. she just looks very o__o.
she comes off as distant and mysterious upon meeting her. the yorozuya's first impression of her was "yeah, this chick is definitely hiding something really good", and yes, she is hiding stuff, she actually just comes off that way out of shyness. they're almost a little disappointed when they find this out, but their persistent advances towards her gives her a sense of ease and she becomes significantly less stiff and much more animated.
she's very strong willed, especially when she learns how she wants to live her life. she is scarily devoted to her idea of peace, and would, albeit very sadly, betray her friends to achieve it. ironically, she also learns to want to love and protect things other than herself. her blind submission to the empire was both rooted in isolation as well as fear of what would happen to her if she said no, and now that she's been freed of that part of her past, she can begin to love others for the sake of love.
this poses conflict, though, when she's put in situations where to maintain peace in her life, she must hurt the ones she loves. her brain kinda short circuits and doesn't know what to do. and although she usually makes the right choices when in difficult moments, it's a challenge nonetheless .
ummmm that's kinda all i wanna share ^__^ i have so much more lore but that's all to say that i don't want her to be a mary sue or anything.
i know there is a lot of text, but if u have anything to say abt her, or share ur own oc then pls!!! my askbox is open for a reason :D
