rereading vatican trio scenes to make sure i get their characterisation right, and. hestio is so bossy lol.
some choice moments:
(Tower arc era, Tesilid's detention) “...I thought I'd have to forcefeed you if you refused to eat. Well, hurry up and put it in your mouth.”
(Spoiler moments below)
“Hey, Tesilid. It’s nice to see you, but can I hold you by the neck?” Of course, Tesilid’s will didn’t matter. Hestio immediately grabbed his collar.
“Hey, Ephael! Why aren’t you taking care of this weak supporter!” / “So, what did you do for these things to charge at you?” / “Shut up!”
the way he flips so rapidly between asking after your wellbeing and then cussing you out is so incredibly funny. tsundere.

the appeal of Tesilid/Hestio is that hestio would be extremely upset about it. Him, crushing on this mf who's always so stiff and is a doormat who can't look out for himself and whom he's been ribbing for years and who is also very very handsome?!?? blasphemy!!!! Multiple years of denial and you would need to pry a confession out of him. Affection disguised by sharp comments and yells.
((now imagine if he hasn't done shit about his feelings until Tesilid's regression starts. Some timelines he confesses. Some timelines they get together. Some timelines he never does a thing; but now that Tesilid has lived rounds where he does, he can see through his bravado. Does Tesilid reach out first?
Dozens of get-together plots playing out, but there is never a happy ending; not in the long run. Tesilid wakes up to a new Hestio that's not the one he left.
Some timelines Hestio is greeted by an unusually familiar Tesilid. Some timelines Tesilid inexplicably avoids him, and when Hestio tracks him down he looks at him like he's one wrong move away from crumbling apart. Like Hestio's presence itself hurts him. Whatever the fuck did he even do?))

Perks of Being an S-Class Heroine - Propaganda Post
Tumblr media
S-Class Heroine is my all-time favourite Otome Isekai for sure. I've reread the available webtoon chapters a stupid number of times, then read the webnovel and became even more insane about the story. Here's why you should read it too!
---
The premise of the story is pretty standard. Lady in her 20s gets hit by a truck and is reincarnated as a mob character who's destined to die early. Her new world is full of danger because dungeons filled with demons can spring up whenever, but she has the help of a game system and its benevolent moderators (the gods that transmigrated her there) cheering her on.
Top 3 things that make the story stand out from other OIs:
No romance while they're children
It's a low bar but one that lots of OIs fail anyway, so it's worth mentioning.
Excellent Pacing
Speaking of childhood arcs, the author has the good sense to skip all the unnecessary skill grinding. We're only with the MC in the important parts where (1) worldbuilding mechanics are introduced (2) she makes important friends, or (3) she acquires fundamental skills that she's going to use for the rest of the story. You never lose track of the stakes involved because the story isn't dragged out. But it also isn't rushed; the story takes the time to pause for jokes and small moments too.
The in-universe the tutorial/childhood period is 10 years long, but we're only with the MC for like a couple of months in total. Can't imagine being in the childhood arc for 100+ chapters. (sorry Matriarch. I did love you but I simply cannot see why the last 3 arcs I read needed to exist at all)
ML doesn't fall into any of the typical archetypes.
I dunno how to describe Tesilid. He's a hero, he's a damsel in distress. He behaves saint-like but he doesn't even really want to be that way.
His character revolves around some magic restrictions on his behaviour. He has to adhere to the 7 heavenly virtues and abstain from the 7 deadly sins, which basically means that he's always very kind and gentlemanly. He's also a doormat who's constantly betrayed and taken advantage of because he's essentially not allowed to stand up for himself.
He's such a funny guy ever because when he's like 10 and still not very great at handling himself, he petulantly mutters and complains under his breath about why he's the only one who has to live so rigidly. You can definitely tell that if he were given the choice, he definitely wouldn't be doing so many saintly things, but here he is anyway and looking like an angel while at it. But he's also not a selfish prick. He's the guy who in the original novel died 80+ times trying to save the world. He consistently wishes for others to avoid living the same restrictive life as he does in the in-universe church, even though this incurs penalties from committing the sin of envy.
imo Tesilid doesn't feel like a typical bland ML, maybe because he's quite literally an action fantasy MC who's now in a rofan lol. By the grace of the transmigration gods he now has a transmigrator who wants, above all, for him to have a freer and happier life.
His interactions with FL are both very cute and somehow devastatingly sad and hopeful at the same time. She's the only one with whom he is exempt from the penalties of committing the seven deadly sins, which means he can actually be himself around her. If she's the one giving him food, he can eat it without it counting as the sin of gluttony. So after the childhood arc they have this wordless agreement where she piles food on his plate without being asked and he cleans the plate. They look like a married couple to everyone else, but they're probably rationalising it on the inside. It makes me want to combust.
FL also became strong in order to defend him. I love how narratively speaking, lots of times Tesilid is the damsel in distress. There's no ML coming in to solve all the FL's problems, because he's constantly weaker than her. But it's not demeaning, because it means that for the first time ever, someone is there to catch him when he falls. And despite being weaker and being rescued by the FL lots of times, he's also never stripped of agency. He's always thinking and acting to protect her in turn. And as he gets stronger, she sometimes ends up having to keep up with his plans and antics instead.
TLDR; romance aside, Tesilid is a really interesting main character because his entire thing is about resisting the Saint-like character and destiny imposed onto him. I know OIs are about romance, and this one does have (slow-burn) romance, but I love it when stories transcend that and make their characters more than just their relationship with their love interests. Also it's very nice how he and FL flipped the damsel in distress dynamic and without making it emasculating or demeaning for either party.
Anyway there's more good things about the story, like it being really funny and having excellent art. I would explain and also talk about the MC who's also so funny and so driven, but unfortunately Tesilid has my entire brain in his grip. I could talk about him forever but he has already made this post long enough.
Please read S-Class Heroine ❤️ The pacing is so good and also Tesilid exists. Thank you for listening to my TedTalk.

honestly the worst part about trying to cook up hestio & ephael content is that characterisation-wise, they're treated as a set 😭 like getting their character voices down is okay, if someone's saying something funny and out of pocket give the line to ephael, if it's about politics then give it to hestio. if they're talking about dreams in the secular world give it to ephael. ephael is incapable of code-switching; he talks in a casual way all the time. hestio observes social rules & etiquette more strictly, but also chooses to ignore them in favour of bullying someone in plenty of situations.
but their actual insecurities and motivations and thoughts re: tesilid???? they start to blend together.
like. there are some potentially character-establishing lines, eg. tesilid being detained: "are you okay?"/"why wouldn't i be?"/"ugh, you..."/"leave it be, he's always like that"
but. they swap lines in the webtoon & novel. like??????? 😭 i guess it didn't really matter which of them was upset at tesilid's doormat thinking, and which of them has already taken it for granted? (it matters!!!! it matters when im trying to characterise them!! sob)
i need someone to put them in separate rooms, stat

one of the funniest things about s-class heroine is the way in-universe, tesilid is seen as the most trustworthy and honourable gentleman even though he's probably the biggest liar that walked that earth.
like. aged 10 the vatican is DYING to find out more about the saintess and he's the only one in the boss room who was awake when the dungeon opened. they must have grilled him so bad. they don't give a shit if he's ten and recovering from trauma, the sacred sheep are just tools and this one better spill all it knows. and yet they don't learn a thing about ailette.
note that this is way before he has all those years of regression, where he is forced to practise lying bc he needs to explain why he knows things he has no business knowing.
and then post-regression he and ailette just casually conspire to have him be the one to insist on their cover stories, because his reputation is so pristine that people would surely believe him just based on his word alone. bonkers!! this is the esteemed wielder of the holy sword!
AND, whenever ailette asks him about him about something that doesn't add up, he gives the most bullshit reason ever. and she doesn't really question it. the only person in the world who knows about his obligations and knows how much he pretends to be nicer than he actually wants to be, and she's like "nah tesilid wouldn't lie to me". like yeah she has every reason to believe that, and she's right in that tesilid wouldn't lie to her for no good reason, but the way he gets away with so much lying is so hilarious to me. i know she doesn't 100% buy it and is mostly just trusting tesilid's judgement on what she should or should not know, but. he gets away with SO MUCH lying. it's so funny.
i love the way the story gives him agency by making him just lie all the damn time. and then he just blinks and has a neutral face and everyone trusts him. this is the well-known doormat of the vatican, look at his face would he lie to you.

edit: i misremembered things LMAO please ignore this whole post
ephael is such a funny guy bc he's the one who came up with the insane "plan B is to kill all the other children and then myself so the strongest among us will live" plan, like he's the definition of self-sacrificial right there, and yet whenever the hestio+ephael duo point out tesilid's abnormal doormat & self-sacrificial tendencies, it's ephael who voices it.
when tesilid's under detention for no good reason but says "i'm alright" and ephael replies "there you go again :/". when they meet ailette post-regression and both times he says "when we first met, i thought a second tesilid had appeared"
