Introducing Zaku! He is an eight-week-old workingline Belgian tervuren, he was born on Valentine’s Day, and I’ve been actively waiting on him since 2020. He is @fayeandknight‘s Forte’s half-brother!

His breeder described him as bubbly, happy, sweet, and handler-oriented. She also described him as a “flying puppy” because of his habit of launching himself into her arms when she was picking up a different littermate.

Zaku handled hoteling and a ten-hour car trip like a complete champ. When we got home he had a bit of time to process everything and had a very impressive intermittent eight-hour tantrum. Very understandable, he’d just been through a lot and he is very small and his feelings are very big. Once he’s settled into his new routine he’ll feel better.

He met Kermit and most of the roommate’s dogs last night. Within five minutes, Kermit was play bowing and they had a fun little romp.

Looking forward to having adventures with this little guy!

Okay I’m feeling a little bit better about it taking so damn long to get my tervuren. I know someone who made the jump from smalls to a WL terv in his late 40s. I’ve still got time.

Do you have any idea what breed your next dog will be?

Dachshund! When Zaku is two I will consider my living situation and how crazy I feel and then acquire myself a second mini longhaired dachshund.

2023 recap:

TERV PUPPY 2K2SOMETHING ACQUIRED!

Kermit's Field Champion (AKC) title acquired!

Kermit's Novice Containers (UKC and AKC), and Novice Interior and Exterior (AKC) acquired!

Kermit's Certificate of Hunting - Rats (AWTA) acquired!

Kermit's health testing (Embark, OFA, INCOC, CERF) done.

Our ratting group was on TV, which was cool.

Lure opped for lure coursing and oval racing for the first time.

Went to the UKC Western Classic in Washington for the first time.

Struggled with my health for most of the year but I finally switched doctors and now we're getting to the bottom of it. Still waiting on some test results.

I handled three of my friend's dogs to Reserve Champion, Best Puppy in Show, and Best in Show at a UKC sighthound specialty. I'm very proud of that because it shows that I really leveled up my confo handling.

2023 was a rough year, but some positive things did happen. Kermit has really come into his own as a solidly dependable partner, and Zaku is probably the best puppy that I have personally handled.

My goals for 2024 include getting Kermit's Excellent nosework titles, maaaaaybe getting our NW1, ratting and rabbiting more of course, and I really want to go out coon hunting with my friend. For Zaku I want to chip away at his UKC CH, continue various sports foundations and manners reminders, and get him out on pack walks finally.

What are your plans/hopes for future Terv puppy?

For sports I definitely want to do agility, lure coursing and fast CAT, nosework, tracking, and urban mushing. I have really low competition goals, so I want to start with MACH and go from there. I really want to give Iron Paws a try, too.

Might give UKC confo a try, for a lark. They're more open to workinglines, so who knows! And of course I'll try out whatever else sounds fun.

Hoping to get to go on a bunch of day hikes, too. I miss it. Maybe get it a cute little backpack.

Oh, and I'm really looking forward to just, rolling up to a terv club meeting and having my own terv!! It's going to be so exciting!

On a silly note, I'm looking forward to being the person running a dog in the 24'' class and another dog in the 4'' class. XD

Any update on puppy??

I had the wrong dog's heat cycle memorized. I thought I would be getting puppy late December, but Mama Dog actually comes into heat in January. So puppy will be coming home in about a year.

At least that will give Kermit more time to mature.
