From “Damsel in Distress” to “Where the f*ck is Mario?”
In the last blog post we realized that there was a change in the depiction and representation of female characters in video games. To analyze this change more detailed and get a closer look on the female gender roles, this post focuses on the actual transformation of some iconic girls in the video game industry. For this purpose let me introduce you to our legends: Princess Peach and Ms. Tomb Raider Lara Croft. Of course there are so many great examples of character development, but I chose them because the majority of people knows them.
Beginning with Princess Peach, she is the ruler of Mushroom Kingdom and the love interest of Mario. Everyone that has ever touched on the topic of video games knows her. She is the perfect example of the famous damsel in distress. The Super Mario games typically start with the kidnapping of Peach and you, the hero Mario, need to save her. In the early games she is not much more than this helpless and innocent character but over the time she developed to be one of the best playable female characters in the gaming world. From her first appearance in 1985 until today she still has her innocence and naivety, but she grew stronger and more likeable especially for female players, when she said things like “I can’t believe I got kidnapped… again” in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. She is definitely aware of her situations and she is not that helpless like Mario thinks. The more I analyzed the character Peach, the more I came to the conclusion that especially in the newer games, she really plays the role of the damsel in distress for her love interest, but she knows that she could get out of the situation by herself. This is actually achieved in the game Super Princess Peach from 2005. There, Mario is kidnapped and Peach has to save him. Also in other games like Super Smash Bros Brawl or all Mario Kart / Mario Sport games her sometimes bullish and competitive character shines through. Especially the younger female gamers can easily identify with Peach and I think she is perfect for the first-time gaming experience.
The other iconic female character that deserves a closer look is Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series. She originally never had the role as the damsel in distress, as she was more the female Indiana Jones. Especially in the older games she represented this badass character, which could have been a good thing. But because of her overly sexualized body it made her less appealing for female gamers and was highly criticized. When mostly male gamers started to create software patches, where Lara can be played naked, it was obvious that this was another game designed for the male audience and not for the growing female gamer community. This changed when the series got a reboot in 2013. Lara Croft is now much weaker, especially in the beginning of the game, but grows to be stronger over the time. Also her body was remade to make her look more natural with realistic body proportions. What seems to be a small step, because it is easy to just program her smaller breasts, was actually a huge step in the video games industry.
More and more strong female characters can be played and there is definitely a positive tendency towards realistic body expectations for female characters, but still “Sex sells” and the gaming industry will never say goodbye to hot blondes in bikinis and the damsels in distress. The gaming community grows and so does the female part of it. Representative of that development, my survey with 125 participants resulted that 41,6% of the participants were female and gamers. So it is the best to hope that the variety of playable female characters continues to spread.

What You Wake For by @hannahindie (no pairing) - It took me a moment to realize what was taking place here, once I figured it out, I went back to the beginning and started over. This was so damn well done, I am not even sure I have the words. The narration was spot on (just go with it) and the storytelling was moving.
