Beautiful Body Art By Tattoo Artist Sion Kwak (30 Pics)
Beautiful Body Art By Tattoo Artist Sion Kwak (30 Pics)
A tattoo is more than just a picture or ornament slapped onto a random part of our bodies—it’s an element of identity, a social announcement that explains who we are, what we stand for, and many other things about us. Tattooist Sion Kwak from South Korea uses this very form of art to tell these very stories of identity, beliefs, tradition, culture, and values. She creates delicate tattoo designs…

The Passing of Time: Grief, Love, Loss, and Wins
In 2015 I got my first tattoo; no really a ; tattoo! You can read that adventure here. The semicolon project helped me process my grief after losing my brother to suicide in 2010. I wanted to commemorate my brother, I wanted to share my grief, I also wanted something to show how committed I was to smashing stigma. That I would tattoo my body was a pledge to speaking up and out about mental health and suicide prevention. It was a symbol for action, for dedication; a part of my identity going forward.
This year will mark the 10 year anniversary of my brother Andrew’s death. It has been 10 years of forced learning - through friendships lost and others strengthened, therapy and self-reflection, projects created like Everything But the Cat... and Stories Like Crazy, traveling around the world from Vienna to England to Japan to Punta Cana to Korea, and through actual learning with safeTALK and ASIST.
I wanted a tattoo to kick start this year on the right foot (haha, I got this as an anklet) so to speak, as I didn’t want this tattoo to be about the anger, the sadness, the despair that is me trying to add my voice to change in our community for mental health resources (which if you saw me on Twitter the other day it got a bit ranty). I want to move from the weight of the sadness and anger that my grief and anxiety has been to something more positive; leaning into renewal and growth and acknowledging how far I have come in my life’s journey, and how far I have yet to go!
I wanted a new commitment and a new symbol for me: one of growth, optimism, cultivating positivity, love and endurance, grief and bereavement but also living life to the fullest. And since I was going to South Korea with my friend Roberta, who was celebrating her life while fighting cancer, I wanted to get a tattoo with her. We decided that Sion Tattooist was perfect in so many ways. The traditional Korean embroidery was calling us. I did research into the meaning of the knots:
Tumblr media
Chrysanthemum Knot: in knot work they symbolize optimism and joy; “In some countries of Europe (e.g., France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Poland, Hungary, Croatia), incurve chrysanthemums symbolize death and are used only for funerals or on graves, while other types carry no such symbolism; similarly, in China, Japan, and Korea, white chrysanthemums symbolize adversity, lamentation, and/or grief. In some other countries, they represent honesty.”
Sakura (cherry blossoms): Cherry blossoms are a symbolic flower of the spring, a time of renewal, and the fleeting nature of life. “The significance of the cherry blossom tree in Japanese culture goes back hundreds of years. In their country, the cherry blossom represents the fragility and the beauty of life. It's a reminder that life is almost overwhelmingly beautiful but that it is also tragically short.”
Ginger knot: good luck, and hey, I’m a ginger 😉
Green embroidery: Green, the color of life, renewal, nature, and energy, is associated with meanings of growth, harmony, freshness, safety, and environment. *from white to green to dark green/black: I asked for a movement from dark to light as a reflection of this journey too.
Tattooist Sion did an amazing job, and I’m so thankful to Roberta for including  me on this trip and this tattoo adventure.
I am happy to mark the start of 2020 with this new commitment and outlook.
Here’s to starting a new book, not just a chapter, on life.
