We lost one of the Great Film Makers yesterday.  Her soul will live on In Cinema! Rest In Peace, Agnes! - Phroyd
Agnès Varda, a groundbreaking French filmmaker who was closely associated with the New Wave — although her reimagining of filmmaking conventions actually predated the work of Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut and others identified with that movement — died on Friday morning at her home in Paris. She was 90.
Her death, from breast cancer, was confirmed by a spokeswoman for her production company, Ciné-Tamaris.
In recent years, Ms. Varda had focused her directorial skills on nonfiction work that used her life and career as a foundation for philosophical ruminations and visual playfulness. “The Gleaners and I,” a 2000 documentary in which she used the themes of collecting, harvesting and recycling to reflect on her own work, is considered by some to be her masterpiece.
But it was not her last film to receive widespread acclaim. In 2017, at the age of 89, Ms. Varda partnered with the French photographer and muralist known as JR on “Faces Places,” a road movie that featured the two of them roaming rural France, meeting the locals, celebrating them with enormous portraits and forming their own fast friendship. Among its many honors was an Academy Award nomination for best documentary feature. (It did not win, but that year Ms. Varda was given an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement.)
It was her early dramatic films that helped establish Ms. Varda as both an emblematic feminist and a cinematic firebrand — among them “Cléo From 5 to 7” (1962), in which a pop singer spends a fretful two hours awaiting the result of a cancer examination, and “Le Bonheur” (1965), about a young husband’s blithely choreographed extramarital affair.
Ms. Varda established herself as a maverick cineaste well before such milestones of the New Wave as Mr. Truffaut’s “The 400 Blows” (1959) and Mr. Godard’s “Breathless” (1960). Her “La Pointe Courte” (1955), which juxtaposed the strife of an unhappy couple with the struggles of a French fishing village, anticipated by several years the narrative and visual rule-breaking of directors like Mr. Truffaut, Mr. Godard and Alain Resnais, who edited “La Pointe Courte” and would introduce Ms. Varda to a number of the New Wave principals in Paris.
These included Mr. Truffaut, Mr. Godard, Claude Chabrol and Éric Rohmer, all of whom had gotten their start at the critic André Bazin’s magazine Cahiers du Cinema, and who became known as the Right Bank group. The more politicized and liberal Left Bank group would come to include Mr. Resnais, Chris Marker and Ms. Varda herself.
Arlette Varda was born on May 30, 1928, in Ixelles, Belgium, the daughter of a Greek father and a French mother. She left Belgium with her family in 1940 for Sète, France, where she spent her teenage years. At 18, she changed her name to Agnès.
She studied art history at the École du Louvre and photography at the École des Beaux-Arts before working as a photographer at the Théâtre National Populaire in Paris.
“I just didn’t see films when I was young,” she said in a 2009 interview. “I was stupid and naïve. Maybe I wouldn’t have made films if I had seen lots of others; maybe it would have stopped me.
“I started totally free and crazy and innocent,” she continued. “Now I’ve seen many films, and many beautiful films. And I try to keep a certain level of quality of my films. I don’t do commercials, I don’t do films pre-prepared by other people, I don’t do star system. So I do my own little thing.”
Her “thing” often involved straddling the line between what was commonly accepted as fiction and nonfiction, and defying the boundaries of gender.
“She was very clear about her feeling that the New Wave was a man’s club and that as a woman it was hard for producers to back her, even after she made ‘Cléo’ in 1962,” T. Jefferson Kline, a professor of French at Boston University and the editor of “Agnès Varda: Interviews” (2013), said in an interview for this obituary. “She obviously was not pleased that as a woman filmmaker she had so much trouble getting produced. She went to Los Angeles with her husband, and she said when she came back to France it was like she didn’t exist.”
Ms. Varda was married to the director Jacques Demy (“Lola,” “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”) from 1962 until his death in 1990. From 1968 to 1970 they lived in Hollywood, where Mr. Demy made “Model Shop” for Columbia Pictures and Ms. Varda made “Lions Love,” which married a meditative late-’60s Los Angeles aesthetic to the New York counterculture. (The cast included the Warhol “superstar” Viva; Gerome Ragni and James Rado, the writers of the book for the musical “Hair”; and the underground filmmaker Shirley Clarke.) During that same period, she shot the short documentary “Black Panthers” (1968), which included an interview with the incarcerated Panther leader Huey Newton; commissioned by French television, it was suppressed at the time.
It was also during that period that she befriended Jim Morrison, the frontman of the Doors, who visited her and Mr. Demy in France; according to Stephen Davis’s “Jim Morrison: Life, Death, Legend” (2004), she was one of only five mourners at Mr. Morrison’s funeral in the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris in 1971. That same year she became one of the 343 women to sign the “Manifesto of the 343,” a French petition acknowledging that they had had abortions and thus making themselves vulnerable to prosecution.
In 1972, the birth of her son, Mathieu Demy, now an actor, prompted Ms. Varda to sideline her career. He survives her, as does the costume designer Rosalie Varda Demy, Ms. Varda’s daughter from a previous relationship, who was adopted by Jacques Demy.
“Despite my joy,” Ms. Varda told the actress Mireille Amiel in a 1975 interview, “I couldn’t help resenting the brakes put on my work and my travels.” So she had an electric line of about 300 feet for her camera and microphone run from her house, and with this “umbilical cord” she managed to interview the shopkeepers and her other neighbors on the Rue Daguerre. The result was “Daguerréotypes” (1976).
In 1977 she made what she called her “feminist musical,” and one of her better-known films, “One Sings, the Other Doesn’t,” which also seemed inspired by personal circumstance.
“It’s the story of two 15-year-old girls, their lives and their ideas,” she told Ms. Amiel. “They have to face this key problem: Do they want to have children or not? They each fall in love and encounter the contradictions — work/image, ideas/love, etc.”
One of Ms. Varda’s more controversial films, because of its casting, was “Kung-Fu Master!” (1988), a fictional work about an adult woman — played by the actress Jane Birkin, a friend of Ms. Varda’s — who falls in love with a teenage boy, played by Ms. Varda’s son. The title — it was changed in France to “Le Petit Amour” — referred to the young character’s favorite arcade game. The film was shot more or less simultaneously with “Jane B. par Agnes V.,” another of Ms. Varda’s border crossings between fact and fiction, which she called “an imaginary biopic.”
After Jacques Demy’s death, Ms. Varda made three films as a tribute: the biographical drama “Jacquot de Nantes” (1991) and the documentaries “Les Demoiselles Ont Eu 25 Ans” (1993), about the 25th anniversary of Mr. Demy’s “The Young Girls of Rochefort,” and “L’Univers de Jacques Demy” (1995).
Ms. Varda was then relatively inactive until 1999, when, armed for the first time with a digital camera, she set about making “Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse” (“The Gleaners and I”), which resurrected an artistic career now well accustomed to under appreciation and resuscitation.
“She was a person of immense talent, but also enormously thoughtful,” said Mr. Kline of Boston University. “When you look at some of the films you might think they were more spontaneous than thought out. A film like ‘Cléo,’ for instance, you might have said, ‘O.K., she just follows Cléo around Paris,’ but the film is extremely beautifully imagined and thought out beforehand.”
In “Vagabond,” an 1985 film in which Sandrine Bonnaire plays a woman who is found dead and whose life is recounted, often in documentary style, “the traveling shots in the film are always ending, and each subsequent shot beginning, on a common visual cue,” Mr. Kline said. “It makes you look at film in a completely different way.”
Alison Smith, author of the critical study “Agnès Varda” (1998), called Ms. Varda “a poet of objects and how we use them.” In an interview for this obituary, she added, “Varda as an artist intrigued, and intrigues, me by the constant freshness and curiosity which she brings to her inquiries into the everyday world and how we relate to it, particularly how she uses the detailed fabric of life.”
Richard Peña, who as director of the New York Film Festival helped introduce “Gleaners” to an American audience, praised that film and Ms. Varda’s “The Beaches of Agnès” (2008) as “touchstones for a new generation of nonfiction filmmakers.”
Ms. Varda is represented at the Museum of Modern Art by photographs, films, videos and a three-screen installation titled “The Triptych of Noirmoutier.” “A decision to change direction and move into installation art when over 80 is, by any standards, remarkable,” Ms. Smith said. “But her energy was awe-inspiring.”

What the Gluten
I’m not one to give into fads of any kind.  I find that when something is gaining a lot of  chatter it usually makes me question the validity of it.  I’m also not one to jump on the band wagon with everyone else, because I believe diets are designed to fail.  If everyone is veering left, I usually end up going right – I kinda have a bit of a rebellious streak (can you tell?).  I like the idea of self discovery and organically stumbling into something, whether it be an article of clothing or a dietary change.  So when I kept hearing about going gluten free for people with no real health issues, it was hard for me not to roll my eyes back into my head and think it was another dietary trend to lose weight.  It made me want to ask to pass the gluten my way at the dinner table and say “see look guys, I’m eating gluten and I’m turning out just fine!”
I strive to keep healthy and try to be fit.  I work out almost on a daily basis and I am a predominantly clean eater.  What that means is that I tend to eat more “whole foods” and less processed ones on a daily basis.  So when I went in for my annual check up and had my thyroid reexamined (I have hypothyroidism), I was told I would have to mess around with my synthroid prescription yet again to balance out my thyroid.  For those of you who don’t know, your thyroid helps your body use energy and keeps your brain and the rest of your body working as it should. So, when it’s out of whack, it can cause myriad symptoms that leave you feeling less than stellar (including brain fog, dizziness, forgetfulness, dryness, weight gain or loss depending, tiredness or anxiousness, agitation… the list goes on).  It’s incredibly common to have thyroid issues and hypothyroidism is something all the women in my family deal with.  So when I was sitting at my Drs. and he suggested I go gluten free to assist the regulation of my thyroid, it peaked my interest.  It also meant that maybe I could help treat the problem and not just the symptoms.  I figured, why not try for a minimum of a week? Ideally a month is optimal for an elimination diet, but I thought a week would be a fun way to document shopping, cooking, and snacking gluten free on a manageable scale.
Aside from my doctor, I also reached out to my nutritionist who gave me an incredible insight into gluten and why it could benefit my health as well as others.   When I asked her about trying a week of no gluten she both encouraged and supported me in doing so, and stated that there was zero harm in avoiding gluten – so why not try going for it?  The new way of thinking is that the gut is the gateway to all things in our body.  It’s the wall that lets our nutrients in and keeps potential invaders out.  That’s one of the main reasons to also maintain a healthy microbiome (that’s why you take those awesome probiotics, folks!  I could go on and on, but I’ll try and keep this succinct as I can!)
Now that a gluten free diet had officially landed on my lap, I felt I had to take a hard look at my health and started delving into the research.  Firstly, what actually is gluten? Gluten is a protein that is found in grains such as spelt, wheat, rye, barley and kamut.  Which means a ton of foods contain gluten – bread, bagels, crackers, pastas, cookies, cakes – basically all the good stuff.  It’s light and malleable, which is why it’s often used in baked goods.  It can also sneak up and behave as a binder and used in some meats to hold foods together. So it’s important to ask first and pay attention as it can sneak into other foods like soy sauce (tamari would be the gluten-free alternative).
Upon scratching the surface of this gluten free adventure, many sources (Wheat Belly for one) seem to think that one of the reasons gluten might have a negative impact is that it has been tampered with by human intervention as its been bred to be more resistant to pests and weather changes. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why some people’s bodies have an inflammatory response to gluten.  From what I understand, gluten can behave like a disruptor in our gut.  When our bodies eat gluten (mainly those with a sensitivity – which a lot of us have without realizing), our bodies attack one of the components of gluten.  When this happens, our bodies produce an inflammatory response which can manifest anywhere from brain fog to bloating, depression, anxiety, autoimmune disease (such as Hashimotos, which is associated with the thyroid), migraines, bloating, weight gain or loss… (all very similar to thyroid problems as well).
In one great resource of gluten elimination, the book Grain Brain, Dr. Perlmutter states “the nerve cells in your gut are not only regulating muscles, immune cells, and hormones, but also manufacturing an estimated 80 to 90 percent of your body’s serotonin.  In fact, your intestinal brain makes more serotonin than the brain that rests in your skull.”  Wow, this blew me away – so I can also curb my anxieties with the help of diet?! Now I’m definitely intrigued.  The more I read about the gut, the more it seems so much is at stake with our diet.  As Dr. Perlmutter further explores in Brain Maker, “Today, much of the focus is on studies that show a link between gut dysfunction and the brain, and, more specifically, the link between the presence of inflammatory markers in the blood (indicating that the body’s immune system is on high alert) and risk for depression.”  It just goes to show how much we can heal or be preventative with what we ingest.
While I am currently halfway through my gluten free week and am desperately missing my flour tortillas and regular multigrain bread, I have to admit, I do feel a little less bloated and a bit lighter.  It’s obviously to early to really tell, but I am glad that I am trying this elimination diet out.  If the goal is to achieve a healthier lifestyle (especially with proper guidance and under the care of medical professionals), I don’t really see the harm in trying.  Long term, I don’t foresee myself being disciplined enough to do this everyday and be so strict with every meal, but I could see how changing the way I look at food and paying even more attention into what I put into my mouth could have a positive impact. If I’m already seeing small improvements, then what’s the harm in feeling a bit better with the assistance of healthy eating? I also agree that a healthy balance and allowing small amounts of flour might need to be factored in for me in order to live in the real world.  I love all kinds of food too much to cut half out, but I do think I can focus more on putting gluten free products and ingredients first when meal planning and ordering.
What I have found good about this “challenge” is that it has made me question what is healthy and why. It’s not just good enough that food says “healthy” or “organic” on the label, but the ingredients and how they affect MY body is what’s at stake.  And for the record, I am not a doctor of ANY kind, but I am passionate about my health and my family’s health.  And because of my passion, I have sought out multiple medical resources for help.  In no way am I saying that going gluten free is is the only way, but I am saying from my experience this is what was recommended for me and I wanted to give it a try.  Thanks for following along, hopefully I didn’t bore everyone!  I’m just hoping I helped shed some light on why it could benefit your health by eliminating gluten – whether it be for a week, a month, or for as long as you can resist.

17 Surprising Sources of Gluten
Tumblr media
There is a wide range of gluten concerns varying from detected Celiac condition and presuming that when you prevent gluten, you feel much better. I just recently spoke with Dr. Davis, writer of Wheatbelly regarding the effects of wheat, gluten being simply one. However gluten, all on its very own, likewise lugs a rather magnificent wallop to our health and wellness if we are one of the numerous that have observed sensitivities. Why are so numerous people all of a sudden delicate to gluten?
According to a 2009 research, the frequency of undiagnosed Celiac illness seems to have increased drastically throughout the previous fifty years. The present estimate according to 133. org is that in 133 Americans have celiac and also one more 18 million have some form of non-Celiac gluten sensitivity. The reasons for this, though rather unofficial, is due to the large boost in gluten-containing foods in our processed standard diet plan combined with an adjustment of the grain itself to consist of a greater gluten concentration.
What is gluten?
Gluten is a healthy protein present in wheat, spelt, kamut, barley, rye, and also some oats. It's gunky and glue-like and discusses why you can roll a piece of refined white bread into a gooey little ball. It usually gunks up the lining of the intestines making it harder to soak up the nutrients from our food, as well as it could contribute any type of variety of physical health and wellness symptoms from mood swings to constipation.
Watch Out! Gluten is Concealing In Greater Than Simply Your Bread, Past, Cookies, Crackers as well as Cake
You may be amazed to locate this thick, clumpy gunk hiding in position you would not expect and causing mood swings, headaches, and additional scrap in your trunk. Cutting out your favorite cookies and cakes is hard enough-you do not intend to be unknowingly sabotaging your heroic efforts.
Check out the list of surprising resources of gluten below to earn certain you typically aren't accidentally consuming more of it compared to you think.
1. Shampoo Many gluten-containing active ingredients are considered to be healthy and balanced for the hair, including ingredients made from wheat, barley, and rye. Enjoy out for shampoos that consist of any of those grain-based oils, or oat-based ingredients, as the oats they utilize might not be gluten-free. What you scrub into your scalp does get in your body, so select very carefully. Dr. Bronner's soaps as well as leave-in conditioners are gluten-free.
2. Chewing Gum Some brands utilize flour to layer items of periodontal to keep them from adhering to the packages. Check the brand name's website to make sure (we like PÜR PERIODONTAL for gluten-free chewing) or chew on a sprig of fresh mint or an item of ginger rather. A lot of industrial gum tissues have sweetening agent, so that's reason enough to remain away.
3. Flavoured Potato Chips Potato chips need to practically be gluten-free, yet lots of potato chip flavorings consist of gluten (or the chips obtain polluted with gluten in handling). Not that you're eating them anyhow, right? Chew on gluten-free kale chips instead.
4. Soy Sauce Did you understand routine soy sauce contains wheat? Try organic, wheat/gluten-free tamari rather, or obtain a little adventurous as well as example some coconut aminos.
5. Salad dressings Many salad dressings utilize gluten-containing components as thickeners. Try making your personal salad clothing instead.
6. Oats Oats are practically gluten-free, however numerous brands could be contaminated with gluten. Always purchase licensed gluten-free oats.
7. Store-Bought Sauces Many packaged as well as canned sauces contain gluten as a thickener (not to state man-made colours, flavours and MSG). Try making your personal gluten-free sauces rather, like this Almond Dipping Sauce.
8. Puddings and Pie Filings Many desserts as well as pie fillings contain gluten-based thickeners. The very best pie dental filling is ordinary old fruit (perhaps with a little of natural sweetener like honey). If you do need a thickener, arrowroot starch is a fantastic gluten and corn complimentary alternative. As well as if you need a gluten-free pie crust, this one rocks.
9. Mustard Some prepared mustards include wheat flour. Check the components label to earn sure your own doesn't.
10. Deli Meats While meat is generally risk-free on a gluten-free diet regimen, ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook meats can often contain unsafe sauces or bread crumbs. Choose natural, regional, fresh meats rather. Besides, deli meats are just simple creepy.
11. Whole Grains Many entire grains such as couscous and also spelt appear risk-free to consume, but they in fact typically aren't. See out for orzo, rye bread, triticale, and kamut, too-they all have gluten.
12. Ground Spices Many spice blends (curry powder, Cajun spice mix, etc.) include gluten as an anti-caking representative. Attempt making your very own blends from pure, whole spices instead!
13. Instant Coffee and Other Drinks Many split second coffee brand names include gluten as a bulking representative and also powdered milk likewise contains wheat. There are fantastic instantaneous coffee options. Dandy Blend is preferred which is accredited gluten-free, or try out these very amazing split second chaga and also reishi drinks from Four Sigma Foods. Make sure to try out this UnCoffee recipe while you go to it.
14. Canned Soups Many canned soups consist of wheat-based thickeners and also loads of other preservatives. Try as well as obtain organic variations in containers rather than canisters, as well as see out that the only components are the vegetables (possibly meat bones) as well as sea salt. Of course, you could constantly make your personal and also freeze it. Here's an excellent vegetable soup as well as one more remarkably healing bone broth.
15. Licorice Some licorice brand names includes wheat flour as a binding agent.
16. Alcohol Many alcohols are made from gluten-containing grains. While the purification procedure ought to theoretically obtain rid of gluten healthy proteins, not all business distill their items completely sufficient to do so. Check the firm's site or take pleasure in a gluten-free mocktail instead.
17. Caramel Colour Depending heading it's manufactured, sugar colour might or may not include gluten. Best to avoid the whole business and also stick to whole, unprocessed, fabricated, and natural colour-free and flavour-free foods rather.
If you have an interest in attempting going gluten-free, even just for sixteen days, look into this directed online Gluten-Free Renewal Cleanse.
Which of these covert sources of gluten surprised you most?

Saying yes to the end of summer
Sorry I left you high and dry there for a few days.  The end of summer is getting a little crazy and I’m jut trying to prioritize the right stuff.
Kyle was gone for a few days last week – I think I already mentioned that and blogged about the first couple solo nights – so now I’m picking up on the end of that stretch.
I made nothing into something with fridge leftovers and it turned into an amazing dinner!  I’ll get to it in a sec.
First, breakfast.
I started out wanting to make a blueberry almond smoothie and totally changed courses when I looked into the freezer and saw there was frozen watermelon…next thing I know I’m making a tropical smoothie!
The rest of the smoothie had strawberries, blackberries, frozen banana and coconut milk.  It was alright, but I think the combo of blueberries with  banana and almond is still my very favorite.
I made a kale salad for lunch and heaped on the candied walnuts.  And is that not the most perfect avocado ever?  Once fall hits (sooooon!) I have a feeling roasted squash is going to be calling to me.
So now back to dinner.  I had half a bag of cauli gnocchi already made, as well as a few handfuls (hands full? handfuls? what’s the correct grammar?) of an arugula and spinach mix.  Since I love finishing small quantities of things off near the end of the week, I knew that’s what I wanted to focus the meal around.
To make it a complete meal, I added walnuts, sun dried tomatoes (plus the lovely oily marinade they came in), as well as fresh basil from the garden and then the rest of the manchego.  Dinner. Perfection.
The kids had a different meal because I didn’t have enough gnocchi made for them.  It still came together in under 5 minutes though.  Yep UNDER FIVE minutes.  Here’s how it went down.  90 seconds of that time was spent heating the already cooked rice in the micro.  I buy the 6 packs of them at Costco just for moments like this, and while it PAINS ME to no end buying food in individual plastic – both from a health and environment perspective – it’s one of those convenience things that I’ve granted myself a bit of grace on.  Most of the time I am on top of planning enough that I can make rice in the rice cooker or pressure cooker super fast.  So I don’t use them very often.  But this was a night that I went for it.
Then I added avo, frozen edamame, and tamari and called it a day.  Sushi bowl for the win.  They loved it of course, and why wouldn’t they?  Any time you combine avo and tamari you know it’s going to be a hit.
But I still think I won.
I have zero photos of breakfasts or lunches on Thursday because I went to California Academy of Sciences (again!) with some friends.  We carpooled which made the HOURSSSS in the car way more fun.  Both for us and the kids.  🙂
Driving in and out of SF takes major mama energy because it is a wild adventure each and every time.  We had to get pretty creative when traffic threw some curve balls, but in the end we all had a blast and we got to hang with friends for a full day!
I left this in the instant pot that morning so the house smelled fantastic as soon as we stepped inside.
I used the last of the shredded Mexican beef from my parents’ anniversary party, but in order to stretch it, I added beef broth and turned it into a stew…which I then topped with chips and plain cashew yogurt.
I almost don’t want to tell you this but I didn’t have anything green that whole day.  Actually, it’s worse than that.  I didn’t have a single vegetable.  Not a one.  Eek!
Back on track on Friday with this guy…
Oh also on Friday!
A graduation for the mini striders. 🙂
These little people will no longer be cheering on their mamas in strollers at 9 am classes because they will be in SCHOOOOOOOL!!!  It was a sweet little ceremony followed by a potluck.  I made butterfly skewers with triangle shaped wings cut out of cantaloupe with raisins as the body.  The winner was the mama who brought Califia mocha cold brew, naturally.
And then guess what happened for dinner!!  The new chill and less OCD Elise made another impulsive decision and accepted a last minute invitation over to a friend’s house!
Woo hoo!  It was SO SO FUN!  I am still in shock that I said yes to this day-of invite, but Kyle and I agreed it was the most fun night.  The kids ate at a separate table and were completely insane the entire time, but aside from that, it was awesome to hang out and eat fish tacos with newish friends who we are getting to know better.
Thanks to stroller strides, my already very big social circle just seems to be growing and growing and I couldn’t be more happy about it.  Sometimes you think you’ve found all “your people” and then you go and discover another whole group of friends who you feel like you were meant to know and that group introduces you to more and more people and then the next thing you know you are the mayor of Davis.  Kidding! But for reals, I feel like pretty soon there won’t be a parent in town that I don’t know.
Also, this dessert was amazing.  I think it was just frozen berries with melted white chocolate poured over it.  It was phenomenal!!  I’m 100% making this at our house.  The kids had plain frozen berries and came away from the night with blue fingers and lips and more rock solid friendships.
Turns out, saying yes brings much more joy than holding on to the “safe” plans that you’ve already scheduled out in your head.  I wish this came more naturally to me, but I’m starting to get it, so hopefully this trend continues.
