The rare discipline to transition rapidly between the application of absolute violence to the application of medical care and compassion is a discipline that is required in very few roles and is captured nicely in this photo. Also worth considering when looking at this image are the conditions in which the Special Operations medic works - in his assault kit, on his knees on concrete in a poorly lit, filthy room covered in the casualty's blood, balancing his attention between managing the patient and updates on the tactical situation coming through his comms gear, which may necessitate him to switch back to absolute violence at any point. Finally, consider the steadiness of hand to confidently draw up drugs with a syringe and needle as seen here having just been part of a gunfight only moments before! @danpronk ”On the day this photo was taken we’d been sent on a mission to recover and destroy an Afghan National Police utility that the Taliban had ambushed, killed the occupants of, and stolen. We had inserted onto target unopposed, secured the village, and found the utility. In the village we also found an elderly man who had been badly stabbed and lacerated across his chest, upper arm and back, and was lying bleeding in the dirt on our arrival. We didn’t have an interpreter with the small element I was with so I didn’t get the details of the assault – they wouldn’t have mattered either way, irrespective of this man’s race, religion or affiliations, at that point in time he was simply another human being who needed our help. After finding him a makeshift bed, we found the rudimentary pharmacy in the village, and using a combination of their and my medical supplies we treated the man. After a thorough wash out I sutured and dressed his wounds and then gave him some intravenous fluids and antibiotics. I left him with a supply of tablet antibiotics and pain relief, which through a game of charades and in broken Pashto we did our best to instruct him to take. I have no idea the outcome of the case as we blew the utility shortly after we finished treating the man and then extracted off target.
