Breakdancing: the newest Olympic sport

Seriously. Not kidding. Not even a little.

Breaking is a style of dance that originated in the United States in the 1970s. It took form in the lively block parties in the Bronx, emerging from hip hop culture, and is characterised by acrobatic movements, stylised footwork and the key role played by the DJ and the MC (master of ceremonies) during battles.

International competitions were first held all over the world in the 1990s, popularising the dance form both among hip hop communities and the general public along the way....

I mean, I’m not saying that breakdancing -- pardon me, “breaking” -- isn’t wildly athletic and occasionally horrifyingly dangerous, as are the vast majority of Olympic sports. All’s I’m saying is ... this seems maybe 30 years late? Even for the glacial Olympic movement?

Also joining breaking on the Paris Olympic menu are surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing.

Breaking will be contested at the Place de la Concorde.

... No, really.

REALLY. Says so on the page. Presumably they will not set up a guillotine for historical reference and atmosphere.

(Side note: I wonder if World Dance Sport might have some devoutly mixed feelings about this. They’ve been trying to get ballroom dancing onto the Olympic agenda for ages, and somehow this johnny-come-lately is the thing that works? The fact that the athletes -- and therefore, it is hoped, the audience -- skews notably younger than ballroom dancing almost certainly plays a part, as well as the fact that it simply looks sweatier and therefore more athletic. The audience for breaking would be, after all, probably in their 40s and 50s, rather than their 70s.)
