Worlds Recap: Play-In Stage W1D2
By Helmight
Tumblr media
Last night’s games gave us our first look at our competition in Groups A and B, and showcased more of the ever-evolving Worlds meta. A few surprises popped up, but for the most part the tournament is proceeding as everyone would have expected.
Standings:
Group A
Edward Gaming: 2-0
Dire Wolves: 1-1
Infinity Esports: 0-2
Group B
SuperMassive: 2-0
G2 Esports: 1-1
Ascension Gaming: 0-2
G2 Esports - Is the Curse Back?
Despite being absolutely dominant in their home region, G2 Esports used to fail miserably at international tournaments. That looked to be changing with their second-place finish at MSI two years ago, but their loss last night against SuperMassive might be indicative of another lackluster performance. G2 did manage to take down Ascension Gaming to at least maintain an even win rate, but it certainly raises questions about their ability to reach the bracket.
Pocket Picks and Permabans
Day 1′s trend of interesting champion picks continued with day 2′s games. Nocturne, Poppy, Azir, and Darius all saw play in at least one matchup, again with varying degrees of success. However, while the actual picks have been interesting, the bans haven’t - Urgot, Aatrox, and Akali have been near-universally removed from the champion pool, or were played the moment they were left open. Three must-ban champions also means that Kai’Sa has been able to slip through most of the time, letting the Daughter of the Void attain a near-100% presence in the drafts as well. It’s still early, but let’s hope this doesn’t lead to another Season 5 Worlds situation.
Jungle Diversity
The few champions that Riot buffed in 8.19 have yet to actually appear in games, but that doesn’t mean the jungle pool is stagnant. Popular picks like Olaf and Trundle have continued to see play, but old favorites such as Skarner, Lee Sin, and Graves have also made appearances. Of particular note is Xin Zhao, finally showing up in pro games after a years-long drought. Can’t say I’m too upset with the diversity - especially since neither Elise nor Gragas have been played yet.
Let me know your thoughts on Day 2′s games in the comments!

PlayStation Store Spring Sale — 7 Great Games You Should Pick Up
April 1, 2020 5:00 PM EST
The PlayStation Store Spring Sale has some of the best PS4 games available at a steep discount. Here are 7 games you should grab before the sale ends.
It’s Wednesday, April 1. Do you know what that means? A new sales event on the PlayStation Store, duh. Dubbed the “Spring Sale,” you can save up to 50% on some incredible games spanning all genres. Here are 7 great games you should pick up during the PlayStation Store Spring Sale.
DOOM (2016) — $7.99
youtube
2016’s DOOM is one of the best first-person shooters this generation. Heck, I would argue it’s one of the all-time greats in the popular genre. While it may not have the most complex narrative, the campaign is an absolute blast that touts some fantastic shooting mechanics, hellish visuals, and a ripping (and tearing) soundtrack. For $7.99, this is a steal and will help you get caught up with Doom Slayer’s story if you plan on playing its recently-released sequel, DOOM Eternal.
Kingdom Hearts All-In-One Package — $29.99
youtube
Normally, I would steer clear from anything Kingdom Hearts related, but this is an incredible deal for anyone looking to get into the beloved series. Kingdom Hearts All-In-One Package includes Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts 3. In short, this package gives you everything you need to experience Sora, Goofy, and Donald’s ridiculous adventure.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience — $5.99
youtube
Speaking of ridiculous adventures, Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience is also on sale. Say what you will about the actual story, but the gameplay in Metal Gear Solid V is incredibly crafted and tons of fun. I mean, you can command a horse to poop. Not many games can top that feature. Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience does pack both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, so you can play through the story in its entirety.
Tekken 7 — $9.99
youtube
There are a slew of great fighting games available at a discount with the PlayStation Store Spring Sale. Games like Mortal Kombat 11 and Dragon Ball FighterZ are exceptional in their own right. However, Tekken 7 is the fighting game I would recommend from this list. It is arguably the biggest fighting game right now. Even years after its release, it is still a headliner at major fighting game tournaments like Evo and Combo Breaker. It was also my personal game of the year back in 2017.
The Last of Us Remastered — $14.99
youtube
Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is one of the best PlayStation titles of all time, and this remastered version only improves what was already a fantastic game. Telling the dramatic tale of Ellie and Joel’s emotional journey across the United States during a pandemic that has completely changed civilization as we know it…sounds a little like now, to be honest. If you really have not played it, you absolutely should pick this up, especially with The Last of Us Part II releasing next month.
Until Dawn — $9.99
youtube
Supermassive Games’ narrative-driven horror romp Until Dawn is such a joy to play, especially with other people. While it only features a single-player mode, the choice-based gameplay makes it a great interactive experience for friends and family. If you love B-horror movies, Until Dawn is right up your alley.
Yakuza 6: The Song of Life — $14.99
youtube
I’m going to be honest, I haven’t played Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. However, I did just beat Yakuza 0 last night and started Yakuza Kiwami this morning. I can confirm that the Yakuza games are amazing and should be played. Putting a cap on Kazuma Kiryu’s long-running journey as the Dragon of Dojima, this is a game any Yakuza fan will probably want to play. I know I do.
You can check out the full list of games discounted during the PlayStation Store Spring Sale here. These offers last until April 28, but more games will be added to the lineup on April 15. Are there any games you think we missed? Let us know in the comments below what you will be grabbing while you stay in.

Worlds Recap: Play-In Stage Day 4
By Helmight
Tumblr media
The Play-in group stage is finally over, and only one more test remains to see which teams will make it to the next step. While the expected teams managed to qualify for the knockout stage, it wasn’t as clear-cut as many would have expected - and that leaves the final results of the play-in in question.
Standings
Group A:
Edward Gaming: 3-1
Infinity Esports: 2-2
Dire Wolves: 1-3
Group B:
G2 Esports: 4-1
Supermassive: 3-2
Ascension Gaming: 0-4
A Surprising Upset
I don’t think anyone expected Edward Gaming to drop a game before the Group Stage began, but nobody counted on Infinity Esports either. After trailing EDG for most of the game, Infinity put together a daring teamfight that aced Edward without losing a single man. That led to Baron, and ultimately to the game for Infinity.
The win didn’t give Infinity the first seed in the group, but it certainly means that G2 Esports - their competition in the knockout stage - will need to be on their guard.
Last-Minute Surge
G2 Esports might have qualified for the play-in knockout stage, but make no mistake - they got there by the skin of their teeth. After giving up a game to Supermassive last week, G2 had to win both of their matches this week, then defeat Supermassive in a tiebreaker in order to claim the top seed from Group B. Even with all of that work, they’re not out of the woods yet - Infinity Esports look good coming off a win over Edward Gaming, and G2 have been shaky at best.
Knockouts
With the play-in group stage concluded, we move on to the knockout stage - the true test for each of these teams. While Cloud9 and Edward Gaming should be able to easily overcome their adversaries, it’s the other two matchups that have the most potential. G2 Esports will have to perform at a higher level than they’ve shown all tournament to take down Infinity Esports, and G-Rex will need to keep their edge sharp to fend off Supermassive.
Let me know your thoughts on the play-in stage in the comments!

Why Mid-Season Invitational 2016 is Awesome
News
Why Mid-Season Invitational 2016 is Awesome
The League of Legends Mid Season Invitational (MSI) are usually not a prestigious event. While the tournament is well watched and often discussed on Reddit it’s results are often forgotten by the time Worlds comes around.
This year MSI featured 6 teams who met in a double round robin group stage. The top 4 teams then advanced through to the semi-final and final matches to determine the winner. We’ve now finished the group stage which means we have said goodbye to the team from Europe and the International Wildcard.
No one could have predicted what happened at MSI 2016 and this mixture of excitement, shock and drama has made this one of the most interesting international tournaments ever. Here are some of our reasons as to why you definitely have to watch the rest of this epic event.
Why MSI 2016 was Amazing
SKT T1 Haven’t Dominated
Korea is the king of the League of Legends eSports scene.
They won Season 3, 4 and 5 worlds and their region is often considered the best in the world. It’s extremely competitive which means players often practice for 12-14 hours a day. This breeds some of the best eSports players we’ve ever seen and Faker (the mid laner for the Korean team SKT T1) is arguably the best League of Legends player ever.
North America, on the other hand, is often considered the weakest of the main regions. It’s continuously mocked and not a single NA team managed to make it out of the groups in the 2015 World Championship. You can see why it’s such a shock that SKT T1 actually lost to the North American team CLG.
This makes CLG the only North American team to have ever defeated SKT T1 and Faker. This tournament wasn’t good for Faker as at one point he had the worst record of all the mid laners. It’s also the only time that SKT T1 have ever lost more than 2 games in a row to a non-Korean team. Fortunately for fans of the Korean scene they managed to rescue their campaign in the final few games to finish an embarrassing fourth.
The G2 Saga
The European champions G2 were extremely highly regarded going into this tournament. They had an extremely successful split in the EULCS and a lot of casters thought they could even make it to the final.
Unfortunately for Europe G2 decided to give their players a vacation before the tournament which led to them having an embarrasingly bad performance where they finished 2-8 and in 5th place. This angered a lot of the Europeans because they felt that their region was embarrassed by a team that didn’t take the event seriously.
This also has implications for the EU chances at worlds as the 1st seed in Europe will now be in Pool 2. This angered professional players such as Edward and added some drama to MSI 2016.
The Arena is Awesome
MSI 2016 has been hosted in Shanghai – a beautiful city in China. This is the first international event to be hosted in China since 2013 and Riot decided to host the tournament at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center which can be seen above.
The architecture of this arena is something else – It’s stunning. What makes it even more impressive is that Riot have gone all out inside the venue and made the stage look fantastic. The desks face inwards against each other and it’s an impressive sight – Professional League of Legends has come a long way from being played in a basement.
LMS Has Replaced EU
While the above graphic isn’t accurate (due to the NA region placing higher) it would seem Riot predicted the EU finish perfectly. Now before you start to yell scripted you can put your pitchforks away and understand that the above graphic was released in a series of hypothetical images before MSI 2016.
The real reason for including it in this post is that it now shows the Pool 1 teams (although BR would be replaced with NA). Yes that’s right – thanks to the poor showing of G2 at the MSI, EU won’t have a pool 1 team in the 2016 League of Legends World Championships. This is a new low for the EU region and will give them a tougher run throughout worlds.
MSI is Worth More Than the Money
In a bid to make MSI more prestigious Riot decided to base the World Championship 2016 seeding on the results of this tournament. This means that teams won’t just be playing for more money, but also to make their run at Worlds easier. This made the tournament worth a lot more than in previous years and has led to a much more competitive, and fun, event to watch.
Unfortunately for EU it would appear that G2 didn’t get the message about the MSI 2016 changes.
The Wildcard Regions are Growing
The wildcard teams at tournaments are often considered a free win. Despite all the jokes about EU being a wildcard the real wildcard this year came from Turkey – a team named Supermassive. While their 1-9 score doesn’t look great it doesn’t give an accurate picture of their campaign at the MSI 2016.
The players were entertaining, pressed advantages and proved their skills at a mechanical level. Their main Achilles heal was poor decision making but this will improve as they compete more at an international level. This team even managed to beat the North American Korean Slayers CLG which was truly counter logical.
The team, although only 5 months old, showed that the IWC regions are growing and will soon be able to compete with the lower seeds in the main regions. It won’t be long before some of these teams will get through the group stages at worlds and start to become a real threat and no longer a be considered a free win.
