Verconiik by Lindsay Vrckovnik (Linmick)
I was scrolling through my instagram explore page as you do on a Sunday afternoon and came across this fashion designer. I am most intrigued by the organic shapes embedded in some of the clothing and also the shapes of the earrings with the sort of loomed thread around them.
I just thought that this was quite interesting to see how some one else uses these kind of shapes and what context they’re used in.

help me up
It has been weirdly unnatural for me to see one of my pieces on the floor, so the title was kind of fitting in that sense. I feel that this work is a step in a new direction for me, working with both of the materials that I have come to know (silicone, plaster) and seeing how they can come together as one. It being on the floor was also more reason for people to bend down and feel the differences in these materials, but finding a way for people to do this on their own accord without me telling them, could be a challenge for the future.
This year, I am happy with my progression. I feel as if I am heading somewhere with these works and am excited to see where I can go with these ideas/methods. The things that I should have done more of was actually creating. I sort of lack in this area and feel as if I only create for the deadline, instead of making things in between also. I also should of got out to more galleries.
This work was a stepping stone, leading towards next year.

Making, Final hand in.
I wanted to stray from the oval/circular organic forms, into one that was full. I have also decided that with this change it was only fitting to keep it white. I intend to cover the crevice areas with plaster spikes and then the raised areas with silicone, showing the materials in their raw form. I still wanted to use spray paint, but not in an overwhelming way, I still wanted to show the medium but not to its full capacity, so I just softly pushed down on the spray can to create dots around the sculpture.
I was making this in order for it to be a wall piece, but I had looked at it on the floor for so long I couldn’t imagine it on the wall anymore. Unlike my other works this one was suited to the floor.

Next Steps
Summative hand in,
I would like to use this hand in as an experimentation. I think I am going to try out different forms. What I make will probably depend on what space I am showing in, but at this point in time all of the spaces are probably booked out so I will probably show in my studio space. Therefore I am thinking of doing a wall work.
I came across this artist named Sui Park,
“My work involves creating 3-dimensional organic forms in generic and biomorphic shapes. Through these forms, I attempt to express seemingly static yet dynamic characteristics of our evolving lives. While they resemble transitions and transformations of nature, the forms are to capture subtle but continuous changes in our emotions, sentiments, memories and expectations.”
She creates these forms from cable ties, here are some examples,

Even though we dont use the same materials, we sort of share the same ideas. I think looking at her works will help me to spring into this summative assessment with something that I can build on in the future.

The exhibition
Overview,
Rocky Mediocrity is a responsive exhibition that shows five artist’s consideration of a collectively chosen object. This process has bound us together and resulted in a display that shows each artist’s unique response to this object which can read ideas evolving over this observation period. The object was a small section of exposed and eroded intertidal rock sheltering rock pools at coordinates -41.331509, 174.830546 Located at Breaker Bay. We chose this site as it was intriguing in textural qualities, size and was easily accessible. The rock is represented through video as a visual reference point to each of our works. Viewers can interact with this site by taking a trip there by following the coordinates or simply viewing the projected video in this display. We are allowing the two-part video to create a sense of movement in the space and expose the more hidden aspects of our chosen rock. This also connects the audience back to our chosen site. This exhibition includes a variety of media that explore different aspects of the object and its surroundings. The combination of painterly and sculptural elements from our works results from all choosing to respond to various aspects of the rock. The Rock is our converging point.
The Experience
Overall, we worked really well as a group, we all put significant thought into this idea and process’. From this thinking we were able to create works that relate to this idea, then put them together for the exhibition. The only thing that was a shame was one of our group members said he was going to create 4 works that reflect on the site at different times of the day. This was then reduced to 2 works, then to 1. We showed up on the morning of the exhibition to it being unfinished, which was just a bit saddening.
But other then that i am incredibly happy with the way this exhibition has turned out and happy that the effort we had put into it was recognised.

My Work pt. 2
I had never worked with projection before, we almost weren't able to show this video in our exhibition because we did it quite last minute so mike was quite busy. But in the end we ended up being able to use the projector properly after a bunch of trial and error.
I took these two videos, one of the rock itself and one of the pool. We were originally only going to have the video of the rock but then I thought that the pool was also as relevant to our work as the rock was. This video can be used as a physical representation of the rock in the space and it also gives context to the multiple works in the space.
Overall, this was a very simple video task, but in the future I could be interested in perusing more video works that may go along with sculptures

My work,
In this work, I am questioning the inner and the outer being of the rock. How the current outer shell of this rock now could have once been the inner. It is mostly from its lasting relationship with the surrounding water that has changed this rock’s appearance. The unknown, I don’t know how this rock may evolve over time. The water, seemingly harmless but has harsh actions, the water can scarily alter this rock over time but the water seems to be somewhat comforting. In this rock there is a hidden pool. I have roughly taken the shape of this pool and made it the outline of this work, because I am a sucker for a silly circle like shape.
Overall, this making process was interesting to me. I was stuck for ideas when lockdown happened, and I didn't have access to materials in order to continue working/making. This was quite a hard task, to work together on the same kind of prompt, but I think since we have similar practices/ideas we worked well together.

Exhibition catalogue
This is our groups exhibition catalogue. Instead of having wall text, or titles under/next to works, we decided to have a catalogue. Our idea for this was so that people could walk around the space while reading and seeing what each work was and what it meant. We also thought that it was best for the works to stand alone, rather then having something on the wall next to it.
I really like the idea of a catalogue because it can give information about the exhibition without crowding the space/walls with information, leaving the space clear for the artworks.

This is a draft of the catalogue. So basically theres a title page then a map of the space with all of our work/names, so they can be located. then theres an outline of the exhibition and the ideas behind it, followed by descriptions of the artists and their work included in this exhibition.
I enjoy that it is short and sweet because then the audience has more time to look in depth to the works that are being presented

Catalogue Drafts/ideas
The inspo for this catalogue was for it to be sort of clean and refined. here are a couple of pictures
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mostly white/off white with one colour at the front/back. I feel that this sort of gives more interest to the pictures of the work and the actual work in the space.

My work for this exhibition
Working title: erosion
In this work, I am questioning the inner and the outer being of the rock. How the current outer shell of this rock now could have once been the inner. It is mostly from its lasting relationship with the surrounding water that has changed this rock’s appearance. The unknown, I don't know how this rock may evolve over time.
In my overall practice, I am investigating the relationship between my mind and body.  I am coming to terms with figuring out the emotions that these relationships evoke through my creative practice. I am exploring these ideas through the use of space and shape. I see my making process as taking control of feelings before they pass then creating something out of it with whatever was or will be involved. I aim to create sculpture that is relatable to an audience, sculpture that comes across as something that is unsettling yet familiar. I find relief in this making and my aim is that the audience can also stop and think, to find this relief in viewing.

Work for exhibition progress
making with silicone has been extremely faster than using plaster and it also dries much faster. The only downside is that I bought the really cheap stuff so it smells really bad and makes my eyes water sometimes (which is probably really dangerous). But other then that, i think the silicone spikes look really interesting, they look sharp and soft at the same time.
The next thing is spray paint, i am unsure it it will stick to silicone as well as it did with plaster but it might look interesting with patches, we’ll see. It is also pissing down for the next couple of days, so it may even just stay white u never know

text for catalogue (draft)
For me, my thinking is that I am questioning the inner and the outer being of the rock. Sorta about how the outer of this rock now could have once been the inner but its lasting relationship with the surrounding water has changed this rock. Working with ideas such as the unknown, I don't know how this rock may evolve? And the water how it comes across as something unsettling yet familiar, because the water can scarily alter this rock over time but the water is somewhat comforting (sounds, feel etc)
Working title ‘erosion’.
