Happy Birthday to the actor Gary Lewis, born 30th November 1957.
Born as Gary Stevenson and raised in Easterhouse, Glasgow Lewis seems an unlikely actor, he has had jobs as a roadsweeper and librarian, his brother, a teacher encouraged him to do more and he became in his own words a “voracious” reader, this pushed him into wanting to become an actor at the age of 32.
It was a chance meeting with fellow Scot, Peter Mullan that gave him his break, he joined the regular “in house” actors in Ken Loach films, starring with Mullan in My Name is Joe and Robert Carlyle in Carla’s song he was in good company to learn.
He had a cracking role in Peter Mullan’s film Orphans, with one of my favourite lines, “She’s not heavy, she’s my mother” Lewis won the best actor award for the part at the Gijón International Film Festival in 1998.
I think most of you will remember Gary Lewis playing coal miner Jackie Elliot, father to the films title role Billy Elliot. I sometimes feel like I m repeating myself when noting the CV’s of these actors, Taggart, Rab C Nesbitt and Rebus were early shows for Lewis, while Stonemouth, In Plain Sight and His Dark Materials are more recent in more recent times.
Then there is of course Outlander. Gary Lewis appeared in the first two seasons of the hit show, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon playing, Colum MacKenzie, laird of the MacKenzie family and Uncle to Jamie Fraser. Colum died in the season finale 2 finale Hail Mary. Of Outlander he says, “The fan base is extremely passionate. It is strange because I live in Scotland and Outlander isn’t massive here to the extent it is in Australia, America and Canada. There are fans all over the world.”
In the past year we have seen Gary crop up a few times onscreen, he appeared in the excellent channel 4 series It’s a Sin, he teamed up with James McAvoy in the Highland mystery drama film,  My Son, and in the BBC drama Vigil, with  Martin Compston.
On the cards is  North Pole: 90° North as  Norwegian Polar explorer Roald Amundsen, although  Imdb say it’s Roald  Amunsed, which I am sure is a typo.  I Feel Fine I have mentioned a few times, is in the “Announced” stage, it also has Billy Boyd and Sharleen Spiteri marked down for the project, but it is no further forward and was at the same stage last year.
Lewis was honoured by Glasgow Caledonian University with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters for his outstanding contribution to the TV and film industry in 2018

Noticias de series de la semana: Episodio musical también en 'Once Upon A Time'
Habrá episodio musical en Once Upon A Time
[Fuente]

On February 16th 1954 the writer Iain Banks was born in Dunfermline, Fife.
His first novel, The Wasp Factory, established him as one of the most distinctive voices in Scottish literature. His 1996 novel, The Crow Road, spawned a very successful television adaptation as did an adaptation of his novel Stonemouth in June 2015. My own favourite is Espedair Street,  story of the rise to fame of Dan Weir ('Weird'), a bass player in a rock band called Frozen Gold.
Banks was also a highly regarded science fiction writer under the name Iain M. Banks.
Iain also enjoyed appearances on TV, featuring on BBC's Question Time as well as special editions of University Challenge and Celebrity Mastermind, which he won.
In April 2013, Banks announced that he had inoperable cancer and was unlikely to live beyond a year. He died on 9 June 2013. His final interview was with Kirsty Wark and was broadcast as Iain Banks: Raw Spirit on BBC2 Scotland on three days after he passed away.

Happy 54th Birthday to another big favourite, Douglas Henshall born November 19th 1965 in Glasgow.
Henshall's mother was a nurse and his father a salesman. He attended Barrhead High School, while still at school he joined the Glasgow-based Scottish Youth Theatre. After graduation, he moved to London and trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.. He started acting in theatre while in London, and he received acclaim for his performances in plays such as Life of Stuff, staged in 1993, and American Buffalo.
In 1990, Henshall appeared in his first film, The Big Man. His performances have also been acclaimed: notably, 1995’s Angels and Insects, one of my faves,Orphans, The Man with Rain in His Shoes, and Lawless Heart.
Most of Henshalls acting credits, however, are on television. He portrayed different roles in television series such as The Bill, Dalziel and Pascoe, Psychos and Anna Karenina. In 1999, his performance in the 1999 mini-series Kid in the Corner earned him a Gold Nymph for Best Actor in that year’s Monte Carlo TV Festival. He also acted for radio plays, such as the BBC adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, and continued to appear in stage productions, such as the London production of The Coast of Utopia.
For me Henshall's breakthrough was the role of Professor Nick Cutter in the British science fiction series Primeval, while I didn't rate the series that well, it got him noticed Henshall has starred in the first three seasons of the program, of course he had been in loads of things before this, Taggart, yes another one! And yes Rab C Nesbitt.
Of his earlier films I totally recommend This Years Love, the film is set in and around Camden Town in London, however it has a strong Scottish cast and was written by David Kane, who Dougie would later team up with again in the Ian Rankin TV adaptation of Doors Open and his successful Cop show Shetland, (Kane also wrote the excellent TV adaptation of Stonemouth).
We last saw Dougie onscreen last spring in Shetland, I have scoured the net and there is sadly no sign of a new series as yet, I have tweeted him birthday wishes and asked him, hopefully he will answer, he "liked" last years post on Twitter so fingers crossed.
Meanwhile his latest project The Small Hand, about an antique book dealer finds himself haunted by the ghost of a young boy, he decides to investigate the strange occurrences within his life.It will be on Channel 5, the project has major investment from Screen Scotland. Filmed in Glasgow it is in Post Production and should be on our screens early next year. Douglas Henshall says:
“I’m absolutely delighted to join the cast of The Small Hand. Barbara Machin has written a brilliant script based on Susan Hill’s haunting, seminal novel. The combination of filming in my hometown of Glasgow and the strength of the material make this project a true highlight.”
