At @masseyuni, expect a large presence of masked lapwings, or spur-winged plovers (Vanellus miles novaehollandiae), whether it is day or night. They are actually a recent newcomer to New Zealand, having flown all the way from Australia in the 1930s, and are now quite common. You will come to recognize their loud calls that can even be heard at night. It's a characteristic many kiwis call annoying.
