Some interesting cars sold only in South Africa - your opinions on these? via /r/cars
Some interesting cars sold only in South Africa - your opinions on these?
I've been reading about cars unique to South Africa and these are the ones which seem interesting:
BMW 333iS: The first-generation BMW M3 was not sold in South Africa, so instead a version was made with BMW's M30 3.2-litre/194hp 6-cylinder engine. Only 204 were made.
BMW 325iS: This was made as a rival for the Opel Kadett 16V, and had a 2.7-litre/194hp 6-cylinder engine. It had race-tuned suspension taken from the M3 which was never available in South Africa.
Ford Granada Perana: This had a 4.9-litre/252hp V8 [Ford's Windsor engine] and is fairly rare nowadays.
Ford Sierra 3.0 XR6: In the United Kingdom, we got the Sierra XR4x4 with the 2.8-litre/148hp V6 Cologne engine, but South African buyers got the XR6 which had a 3.0-litre/138hp V6.
Ford Sierra 5.0 XR8 [1984-1988]: Only 250 of these were made for the purposes of homologation. Powered by the Mustang's 4.9-litre/206hp V8, it was quite rare. It looks sporty too
Ford Bantam / Mazda Rustler: This was a pick-up version of the European Ford Escort MkIII, and the only Ford Escort version to be rebadged as a Mazda. Image. Not to be confused with the Ford Escort sold in the U.S. and Canada which was based on the Mazda 323.
Honda Ballade: This was a Honda sold via Mercedes-Benz dealers, and it was identical to the Civic sedan sold in the U.S. and Canada. Engines were a 1.5-litre/90hp 4-cylinder [150i], 1.6-litre/106hp 4-cylinder [160i], 1.8-litre/142hp 4-cylinder [180i] and 1.6-litre/158bhp 4-cylinder [160i VTEC]. Models were badged as 150i, 160i, 160i VTEC and 180i.
Mitsubishi Colt 1600/2000/2500 AT: This wasn't a Colt [as most Colt models were based on the Mirage], it was identical to the Galant sedan sold worldwide, and marketed by Sigma Motor Corporation. Due to the size of the automobile market in South Africa, this replaced the Mazda 626 [the first generation was sold in South Africa, but the second generation was not, as Sigma did not market both the 626 and the Colt together in the range].
Opel Kadett Superboss 16V: More powerful than the Kadett GT and Vauxhall Astra GTE sold in Europe, this three-door only Kadett had a 2.0-litre/169hp 4-cylinder engine. It was also sold as the Passport Optima in Canada which had the same bodyshell and alloy wheels, but not the same engines.
Opel Kadett 200iS: This was, until the 1998 Astra [1999 in South Africa] was launched, the only five-door sports/hot hatch Astra in existence. In Europe, the only sporting Astra was the 2.0 GSi, which was a three-door. The Kadett 200iS had a 2.0-litre/127bhp 4-cylinder engine and was the sporting model.
Opel Rekord: This continued past 1986 when it was discontinued in Europe, and also offered a 3.0 V6 petrol never available on any European version.
Peugeot Canter SWB/LWB: The Mitsubishi Canter, sold by Sigma Motor Corporation, was a Peugeot until 1984.
Toyota Tazz: This was a version of the Corolla E90 five-door hatchback available from October 1996.
Volkswagen Transporter T3: Although the new T4 was launched globally in 1991, in South Africa the T3 continued until June 2002. This had Audi engines offered - a 2.3-litre/122hp 5-cylinder, a 2.5-litre/136hp 5-cylinder and a 2.6-litre/136hp 5-cylinder. It was sold under the Kombi and Microbus nameplates.
Are there any South African automobile/car enthusiasts here, what do you think of this list? Are there any models you remember, or cars I missed off?
What do you think of the current state of play of the South African new car market?
