Tasting Notes
I was late. And I got street parking really close. I loaded my hand truck. Jules had the elevator ready for me. Really, the cards were falling into place for a smooth set. Which is good, because I had no plan, except that I was going to start with the PiL track “Memories.” On 7” single. Import. A record I’ve had since release in 1979.
I didn’t play PiL. At all.
An Athletic and a bottle of water were waiting for me in the booth, as I set up and did an equipment check. I started late. With Iggy. Which sounds great. I decide on a UB40 LP cut to follow it up. Turntable left is dead. And I’m starting late so I get a nice dead spot. You know what? I roll with it. I figure out I haven’t potted up the channel, and the power cord is loose. I fix it. Surprisingly, I’m not rattled. I just deal.
I get in a 7” groove going, but I can tell I’m strangely disconnected from the scene. There are people in the house, but they don’t stay long. It’s St. Patrick’s Day (observed), and there is green in the building. Even though I’m half-Irish, I’m not a Catholic, I don’t drink, and I’m old, so I’m out. I’m not a participant in amateur holidays. Not a joiner. Never have been. I’ve missed out on a lot of fun being this way, but I don’t care.
I’m consciously trying to organize the set in a different way. Introducing new tracks into the mix. I’m not really sure if things are in the right order. I play “Down On the Street” from Funhouse by The Stooges, which I love, but maybe I should have gone with “Loose.” Either way, the pressing sounds great – thundering low end and a great track.
Another NA is delivered, by CP, and even though I’ve admired them, and their work outside the bar, it’s the first time we’ve ever spoken to each other. They remark that the 7” boxes are cute. It seems to be a theme. The majority of the first hour is 7” singles. It’s not a plan, it’s just the way it’s worked out. It’s never a plan. I played Tony Basil for instance! And, not because it’s Irish.
It’s hard to get a bead on the room's energy. It seems like people are coming and going faster than normal. I can hear people, but they feel like they are a long way away. My transitions are sloppy, not always tight and good. I need to start concentrating.
Jules comes up, and tells me that this is her last Third Space Saturday. That is not welcome news. When I can’t get a good feel for the crowd, I can always watch Tavis, Jules, CP and Brando to key on. It’s going to be different in the future.
My friend Geneva shows up after going to a flamenco show earlier in the evening. I was unable to satisfy her craving for a ELO song. Maybe next time. I couldn’t find any of my ELO records. 7”ers, of course. “Last Train to London” would be a great jam to have.
I’m not tired, but I’m not entirely engaged either. There is something in the air. Geneva helps, she is always a good audience, but I’m mentally elsewhere – maybe at the legislature, maybe at Treefort. Geneva says I have some girls dancing in the video games section, so that sharpens me up and gets me back in the groove.
Jules comes up and asks me for more hip-hop, and I kind of oblige. Although I am not a genre DJ, I love to throw it in the mix, because it is music, and it stands up.
I go a little over, but when I play the Kendra Morris 45 at 33, and don’t notice until the chorus, I know it’s time to pack up.

ANIMATING UI IN UNREAL
Unreal's Animation system is quite good, I was able to make this text fly across my canvas with relative ease by adding keyframes with the position that I want and then using the curve editor to finalize the look.
This little blueprint will allow me to play an animation whenever the spacebar is pressed, the spacebar is not needed and can be replaced with anything else, it was just for testing.
Animating UI can be great for arcade games, adding impact to things that are usually quite static. Usually it would just be scaling a button up and down, rotating text, making things glow whenever the cursor is over it, etc... it just makes it look more alive.

Week 5: Asteroid Elevator Pitch
Introduction
One of the oldest video games in both its genre and the industry was Atari's 1979 Asteroids. Despite its simplicity when you compare it to modern gaming, Asteroids was innovative for the industry during its time and opened the asteroid-shooting style video games. These games have the potential for interesting designs and mechanics, which is why I created the pitch below.
Pitch:
"Star Scrubber is an arcade-style action game based in a time of space travel and cosmic exploration. Controlling the janitorial ship SqueeGee, players must navigate through asteroids and space junk to collect as much scrap as possible. To do this, players must combine the usage of powerups and their laser cannons to avoid and destroy projectiles for as long as they can.
Elaboration:
As I did previously, I asked myself 5 questions that helped guide me in my design process:
1. What is the goal for the player?
2. How does the player win or lose?
3. What are the conflicts in the game?
4. What is unique about this?
5. Is this game feasible to make?
As previously stated, Game Design Workshop was the inspiration behind most of the questions listed above. Tracy Fullerton described the importance of understanding the core mechanics and goals for the player before the production, so that it leaves you more time to focus on developing the prototype and to study your game's systems in depth. I was also, however, inspired by Fullerton's other message about how what a designer does with an idea is incredibly important, as Asteroids has such simple objects and properties yet has a lot of potential in regards to how they interact with the system. As chapter 5 described, players need information on the structure, objects and their relationship to proceed the game, so I decided to have the map move downwards, along with the asteroids, player and items, to inform the player that they cannot proceed by sitting in the middle and shooting around them in a circle - they must keep moving upwards.
Core Mechanics:
To understand what a player might want from a game similar to Asteroids, I again adopted the player-centric approach and experimented playing with the genre's games. The mechanics below are what I found necessary and desirable for prototyping:
- Shooting
- Scoring
- Moving
- Projectiles
- Increasing Difficulty
- Powerups
- Salvage (Resource Collecting)
- Constant Screen Movement
Audience:
The audience being targeted for this game are retro enthusiasts and score chasers. This game appeals to both demographics, in which the aesthetics of the game are reminiscent of retro video games whilst score chasers would enjoy playing to reach top scores.
Control Diagram:
Players will use the arrow keys on their keyboard to move their ship around the screen. To shoot the floating junk, players must use the spacebar, in which they then must collect the resources from the shot junk to score points. Some junk leave behind powerups for the player to temporarily take advantage of, which they simply collide with to activate for a certain set of time. The players must avoid having their ship collide with any floating junk or the borders of the screen to prevent themselves from losing.
1. What is the goal for the player?
The player's goal is to score the highest score they can without exploding from colliding with the screen borders or flying projectiles. The player collects the debris that lies where a projectile was just shot to add points to their score.
2. How does the player win or lose?
The player can lose by either colliding with the screen border or any of the floating projectiles. In regards to winning however, there is technically no direct win screen that pops up to alert the player. They simply aim to beat their previous score.
3. What are the conflicts in the game?
The conflict consists of 2 things: The floating projectiles and the constant, moving screen. Players want to avoid hitting the border and projectiles but also want to destroy said projectiles so that they can score points.
4. What is unique about this?
There are 3 things about this game that are relatively unique about it:
4.1. Powerups
Players can collect powerups through the projectiles they shoot. Occasionally, an exploded projectile may drop a powerup instead of points, giving players some special ability for a short period of time. This was because, as Fullerton suggested, it sets up more pieces for players to interact with, providing more opportunities for fun gameplay experiences.
4.2. Salvaging Points
Unlike the normal Asteroids where players automatically scored points for exploding asteroids, players have to collect leftover debris floating where the projectile was. This not only ties to the theme of cleaning up junk but it also adds more for the player to do.
4.3. Constant Screen Movement
The constant screen movement upwards is to counter the tactic in Asteroids of sitting in a spot and shooting every object around the player. It encourages players to move and adapt to a changing environment.

ARKcade test
This code allows the changes made in the project settings to enable the movement that has been modified. The adaptation to the movement changes allow the game type to be manipulated.
Here I made it so the character was able to be controlled with the keys A and D rather than clicking as your only option of movement.
After this I also added left and right input for the keys W and S so the top down character can be controlled with the keys rather than the left mouse button.
I had to add another add movement input to allow the left and right controls. I also added snap to grid to the code to make the movement feel more arcade like.
I created a new actor blueprint to make a new projectile. I added a projectile movement which allowed me to manipulate the properties the projectile contain. In this screen shot I had changed the gravity so that it would either float or fall.
In this screenshot I modified the initial and maximum speed the projectile is able to achieve when it is fired.
This is the code that allows the project setting to convey the push of the spacebar so the projectile gets fired. It doesn't work but due to there being more important things to do I can't waste any time as there are issues with getting a certain blueprint to communicate.

“I will stay here, playing the third Saturday of every month, for as long as they want me. So, I will be back next month, 17 February 2024 at 9pm. Hope to see you then.”
Well, I didn’t see you. I missed that gig because the state yanked the bars beer and wine license, and they reduced their hours to work around it.
So I stayed home. I’m bummed not to be playing, but I understand. I will do whatever they ask of me. But they are in a really tough spot. Going without a liquor license is hard, and merely having a beer and wine license after having hard alcohol is not ideal.
Zack and Will continue to fight though. Crowdfunding and advocating for themselves in the media and statehouse. It’s an uphill battle, the old boys network is hard to penetrate.

Congrats on beating Junimo cart!!! Do you have any advice for that game? I cant beat either arcade game. I haven't even made it past the first level of junimo cart 😭😭😭

But I would say find ur preferred method to jump first
U can use the c on the keyboard, spacebar or the mouse
I use the spacebar
You will also need to really learn how to measure out ur jumps, how long to press to make a tiny jump. Like practice that without Shame, you will need those a lot when there is a very small platform cut off from a continuous trail. Like sometimes jumping for the higher plataform will give u nothing so try to stay on path
-first level advice: tbh some rocks are unavoidable hdhhsgshs so don't feel bad if die a lot on a spot. U can jump and hit em w the bottom of ur cart but u can't jump on em so it's not recommended to use when u need to jump soon after
-slippery place was hard to get used to, you basically need to avoid the downhills that appear before long jumps, like as soon as u touch one jump by urself, cuz they rlly mess up with the control. if u forcefully gotta use one cuz I dunno a piece of fruit is at the end of it, you either jump rlly delicately or u lose a life and do it again and do it like I told u at first. This doesn't apply if at the end of said downhill there is a small normal trail spot cuz then u would have recovered ur normal speed!
If u have a certain amount of lives u will get send to either slime place or whale area
-slime: iTS CHASING U! the only way u have to be faster is by jumping over all slimey spots or jump as soon as u touch one to not lose ur speed. U get into a kind of rythim
-whale: it shoots deadly bubbles at u! this one became fairly easier when I learned that if u jump, hold jump and hit one of the bubbles, u will jump even higher!!!! U end up skipping a lot of the level bcuz of this so getting the fruits is difficult, but it's the best way to pass this level.
-ghost trail: good luck, this one is faster and u cannot touch the ghosts like how u were able to jump on rocks/stop signs/bubbles, these ones kill u immediately. On this one once again u gotta measure out how much u gotta press to get the jump u one cuz speed modifies it.

Week 11 (First Prototype)
The first prototypes included only level one and the starting character designs. Two players that I had assigned, had playtested the first prototype. Both players enjoy space arcade games, because of the simplicity and learnability of them. This is very similar to the Last Man Standing game, all the users found it extremely easy to learn, however, both users found the first level very easy and the controls were a bit uncomfortable. The original controls were, A and D to move left and right and Spacebar to shoot. Users found these controls to be very limited as the game allows players to traverse around the map, but the controls prevent the ship to aim backwards or sidewards. This made it difficult for the players to survive as they would be constantly under fire if they were to try and avoid the enemies. This forces players to stay at the bottom of the map and players found that the game was very easy to complete when doing this as, the enemies only move side to side, making them an easy target and easier to predict. Moreover, users stated that the artwork of the game made it very difficult to identify enemy ships as their colour was very dark, close to black, similarly to the background.

How to Play: There are 3 different modes so there are different sets of controls. You can choose which mode you want to play on the main menu screen. In Single Play, you play by yourself but in Cooperative and Deathmatch modes there are two players.
Single Play: This is classic Boxhead, get out there and eliminate as many Zombies as you can. You play as Jon Bambo – leader of the anti-Zombie resistance. Use your Arrow Keys to move. Hit Spacebar to shoot. As you collect more weapons, you can access them using the number keys. Alternatively, hit the comma key ( , ) to select the previous weapon, and the period key ( . ) to select the next weapon. Keep collecting boxes to upgrade weapons and replenish your health and ammo. Your health bar appears above your character’s head along with how much ammo you have left.
Cooperative: This is the same as Single Play, but there are 2 of you, so the controls are different. Before you start, choose your characters on the menu screen. For Player 1 – you still use the same Arrow Keys to move. To shoot, hit the forward slash ( / ) key. Toggle through weapons using the comma ( , ) and period ( . ) keys. For Player 2, to move use W(up); A(left); S(down); D(right). To shoot, hit Spacebar. To toggle through your weapons, hit the Q and E keys.
Deathmatch: This mode is a 2 player mode and uses the same controls as Cooperative. The only difference is that the goal is not to destroy Zombies, you have to destroy each other!
Tip: Zombies move slowly, so steady yourself and take time to aim and fire anywhere at these pests.
