Theory: Gale isn't a wizard.
He's a sorcerer.
"The Sorcerer is known for its innate magical abilities. Unlike wizards, who study and memorize spells from spellbooks, Sorcerers possess an innate connection to magic, usually through their bloodline, ancestry, or some other mystical source."
He mentions he's been in touch with the Weave since he was little, that he could compose it like music. That doesn't sound much like a wizard thing, who learn how to use the Weave via books and writing, and does sound more like a sorcerer, who can access it intuitively.
(Specifically: I'm thinking Storm Sorcerer: "Whether crackling with the energy of ancient deluges or pierced by gales and hurricanes, your lineage is a strange tapestry scrawled by a tempest." Not just for the pun, also because there's at least two pieces of early art [here] and [here] that show him using lightning magic.)
Mystra is intrinsically linked with wizards, not sorcerers; her in-game description talks about how she's all about knowledge and lore, and preservation and protection:
"As the mother of all magic, Mystra oversees the Weave and spreads arcane knowledge to mortal spellcasters. Her clerics preserve ancient lore and protect bastions of magical energy."
If she sees an incredibly talented young sorcerer, I can see her appearing to him, nudging him on to the path of the wizard to almost... keep some level of control over him? If he's doing things only by the book and not by his own intuition and power, he's a lot more controllable than someone who can start electric storms with his brain, y'know?
I'd kind of love to see someone hear about magical prodigy Gale and be like, "Dude, if you were doing magic innately from childhood, you're a sorcerer, not a wizard." I suspect his brain might melt a little, but what's one more existential crisis on top of all the others? And imagine him being able to really tap into his abilities once he sheds all the restrictions Mystra had placed on him!
(Disclaimer: I'm still in act 3 and I haven't played any D&D before BG3. I have no idea if this is larger-lore-compliant, just going by what I've seen in-game so far.)

broke gale take: he couldn't possibly understand how to teach himself magic and to use the weave through study at such a young age because he was a child
enlightened gale take: he's fucking autistic janet

Kind of considering doing another BG3 run which would put me at eighteen total end me where I just. Respec everyone. Because Gale would be such a good Storm Sorcerer, and I was reading up on Wildheart Barbarians and thought that could fit Halsin pretty well, and, well. Now I have a whole list.
Would love to see other people's suggestions, people who have done the Everyone Gets Respecced thing, etc!
Astarion Original class: Rogue (Thief) New class: Warlock (Archfey) Explanation: Already bound to one master, Astarion making a deal to gain enough power to fight back against Cazador makes sense to me. Fey, in this case, fits Astarion's elvish background, and Misty Escape and Beguiling Defences would be very welcome.
Gale Original class: Wizard (Evocation School) - keeping 1 level New class: Sorcerer (Storm Sorcery) Explanation: Gale was summoning animals as a toddler. Man is a sorcerer, flat out. Much of his art uses lightning imagery, and then there's the appropriate name…
Karlach Original class: Barbarian (Berserker) New class: Fighter (Champion) Explanation: The in-game explanation does it best, honestly! "You approach the complex problems posed by combat with one distinctly effective solution - you hit those problems, really quite hard."
Wyll Original class: Warlock (The Fiend) - keeping 1 level New class: Paladin (Oath of Devotion) or Bard (College of Swords) Explanation: For paladin, the archetypal knight in shining armour. For bard, he loves dancing, tales of chivalry and drama, and has the charisma to pull it off. I sincerely believe either of these are what Wyll would have become anyway if he hadn't crossed paths with Mizora.
Shadowheart Original class: Cleric (Trickery Domain) - keeping 1 level New class: Druid (Circle of the Land) Explanation: Shadowheart is defined as being 'the healer'. Druids have a good swathe of healing spells (albeit not quite as many as a cleric, especially a Life cleric).
Lae'zel Original class: Fighter (Battle Master) New class: Monk (Way of the Open Hand) Explanation: Aside from monks being fairly common to githyanki, Lae'zel would appreciate the ability to fight even without weapons.
Halsin Original class: Druid (Circle of the Moon) - keeping 1 level New class: Barbarian (Wildheart) Explanation: Wildheart Barbarians take their power and influence from animals. Each has a Bestial Heart and two Animal Aspects; Halsin would have a Bear Heart and aspect, and some different aspect.
Jaheira Original class: Druid (Circle of the Land) New class: Ranger (Hunter) Explanation: Rangers still have a strong connection to the land, and hunters fit Jaheira's position as a quiet protector.
Minsc Original class: Ranger (Beast Master) New class: Druid (Circle of the Moon) Explanation: BECOME the Miniature Giant Space Hamster!

Tavias (Draconic Bloodline sorcerer) is 100% going to take one look at Gale and go, "Dude, you're a natural-born sorcerer too. No, look. Look I know you studied hard and can eat scrolls and stuff. But you were summoning stuff as a toddler. You're a sorcerer, dude."
And Gale is going to take that into serious consideration.
And then I am going to multiclass him as a Wild Magic sorcerer :)

tfw you're about to tell your Wizard Buddy(tm) he's actually a sorcerer and ruin his whole existence.
(He hit level 6 soon after this and I immediately added a level of Wild Magic Sorcerer. It's gonna be fun.)
