Deltarune Theory: Spamton, The Player & Freedom

As some of you might know by my occassional ramblings and the fact that i post 10 pics of the guy per day bc of my 100+ queue I've been a little unwell about Spamton and Deltarune as a whole lately, and recently while trying to ramble about a different topic I realized something:

I think we, the player, the soul, are a bigger part of this game that we are giving credit for.

After all, what are some of the main themes of Deltarune? Lack of freedom, lack of control, how your choices don't matter... And if we look on a smaller scale, if we look at characters like Kris and Spamton you can also add to the mix a certain level of disconnect with your own body, but maybe i'm going too off topic there... (maybe?)

This is to say, don't you think these things apply quite well to the soul, to us, too? Sure, we control Kris, but Kris is free of ripping us out temporarily and often adds their own input to the things we ask them to say (and even says things on their own), not to mention how they get around to avoid doing what we asked or avoid revealing certain information to us.

On top of that, there's our vessel. The body we were meant to have and freely use, that was, in theory, discarded. And i think this is very imporant because many pick up on Kris being trapped with us, but not as much on us being trapped with KRIS. What we have is an uneassy alliance, a sort of symbiotic relationship, we need one another to exist. But we still aren't free.

And this is where Spamton comes in, our EV3RY BUDDY 'S FAVORITE [[Number 1 Rated Salesman1997]] and number 1 freedom yearning puppet, who offers us the highly valued [Hyperlink Blocked] which he believes will carry one to freedom and such.

And it is true that freedom is something Kris might want, but don't forget Kris isn't the only one in control of their body. We too are the ones going straight back to that salesman and doing his little quest.

And this is even more true in the Weird Route, the route where we strip all control from Kris AND Noelle to the point she can only hear us talking, and it's the route where Spamton says at the end "IT’S YOU AND THAT [Hochi Mama]! YOU’VE BEEN [making], HAVEN’T YOU! YOU’VE BEEN MAKING [Hyperlink Blocked]!".

And if you, like me, believe the meaning of [Hyperlink Blocked] is LOVE, then this would make a lot of sense, after all, what were some of the biggest complaints people had about chapter 1 when it released?

Lack of multiple routes, namely a genocide one, and lack of control.

And Toby Fox, being the monkey paw ass guy he is, obligued to the fans request. You want control? You want murder? Okay, there you go.

Not only that, but the weird route is the only one where Spamton never learns Kris' name, only called them kid, making the fact that Kris has nothing to do with our insane rampage even more explicit.

And on top of everything, Spamton was right. We did in fact gain control and a certain level of freedom thanks to this, our choices, the player choices, now REALLY mattered. And the consequences were devastating, hell, even Spamton died here.

So, with all this said, I think my point has become clear. I think our role in the story is very significant, and it even perfectly ties with the themes and the existing characters.

Very excited to see this develop further as more chapters come out 😁

tbf there are women (like me) who when we put on makeup are fully aware that we are putting it on only to conform to gender norms and avoid social stigma. like yeah it’s different than women who have never worn makeup, but i feel like there’s more of a scale. i only wear it once or twice a month and honestly it makes me a little angry when i do. if/when i become more willing to take on the consequences of eschewing gender norms i will never wear it again

ok so that post was one i put in my queue when i was angry - bc u shouldnt argue on the internet when ur angry lmao and i do too often so sometimes i put shit in queue to discuss when ive calmed down. problem is my queue is currently over two weeks long so sometimes i forget exactly what prompted the post. HOWEVER.

if i recall correctly that was abt this attitude i see, more often than not from gender-conforming women, that gnc women who disidentify with their sex are. basically self-absorbed sexist idiots who, by disidentifying, are implying that all women except them must love the female gender role and must love being oppressed. like a ~im not like the other girls~ thing. but with 'not like the other girls' i think a lot of ppl are now coming to recognise that, yeah, sometimes it's a sexist statement bc one particular woman thinks she's sooooo much deeper and more human than the other women around her - but sometimes, it's because she can see very clearly that she's NOT like other women. and has felt ostracisation and loneliness about that nd has felt like there must be something wrong with her for being so unlike the typical women in her life. and with trans identity it's often the same thing.

i just can no longer make the space in my heart to sympathise with gender-conforming women who act like gnc women disidentifying w womanhood is some kind of personal attack on them, or on all women. women in makeup and heels who act like it's a slight against them for a gnc woman (who will pretty certainly have faced shit in her life for being gnc) to look at them and say. i'm not her. i'm not whatever she is. i must be something different because if that's what women are then i'm not one and i don't want to be one. it's an argument i'm so fucking tired of hearing and nine times out of ten i will stand w a gnc female who identifies as trans bc she doesn't see any room in the definition of womanhood for her any day before i stand w gender-conforming women who mock or belittle her for that.

i recognise there's a scale of gender conformity, and makeup was just one example, and i know not all women who wear makeup wear it all the time - but, as you say, it is a concession to avoid social stigma. so to me it's like. let she who is without sin cast the first stone. how's a woman who makes concessions to gender because she doesn't have the strength to face the repercussions of refusing to conform going to criticise other women for the concessions they make to get through the repercussions they are facing for refusing to conform.

and one extra point: you say 'it’s different than women who have never worn makeup' but, while i know there are such women out there (and by god, good for them), it's worth noting that for some women - for me, personally - they might have made concessions to gender at times. because they felt like it's what they had to do. what they were supposed to do. as a girl. as a woman. and sometimes, it's disidentifying with womanhood that makes them feel like they're ALLOWED to not do that shit anymore. for several years as a teen i shaved my legs & my pits, wore light makeup most days, even wore skirts and dresses at times. it made me feel like an alien. i hated it. but i'd always been given the message that it was just What Women Do and it's part of growing up that you have to get used to that. and when i discovered i didn't 'have to be a woman' there was a freedom in that for me. i could stop shaving. i never had to wear makeup. when someone told me i walked like a man or dressed like a man or talked like a man or whatever, it didn't have to be an insult. i could take pride in being as masculine and as free & unconstrained by the trappings of femininity as i liked. sure, that's a concession to gender in its own way. patriarchy isn't going to be overthrown by women only feeling comfortable with gender non-conformity when they convince themselves they aren't women. but patriarchy isn't going to be overthrown by women wearing heels and makeup so people will be nice to them, either. you're no better than us.

7. what’s one thing you could improve on?

I’ll give you a bit of a weird answer to this : Organization.

I'm a disorganized person. That bites me in the ass when it comes to roleplay - I never know what to do when it comes time to log on and write.

I have 5 threads to reply to, 20+ asks, 40+ posts in my drafts, people I need to DM, plots I need to work out... But I cannot organize my brain to actually tackle these things.

I'll start on one thread, then start answering an ask, then go to DM someone, then midway through typing I'll think oh I need to send in an ask to this person, then I realize that I should start queueing a bunch of posts, and then nothing gets done and I end the day stressed and having made 0 progress on any of it.

I am trying my best to improve on this and beat the meat slab in my skull into submission with discipline but it is a struggle.

8. what’s one thing you think you’re good at?

I think I'm good at making long replies that stay focused?

I have no clue what to call this to be honest!

I write replies which lean onto the longer side by general RPC standards, and I think I’ve managed to hit a sweet spot between too much detail and too little detail? Too ‘prose-y’ vs too ‘plain’. I’m able to touch upon a character’s thoughts, feelings, and actions, without it becoming either a big wall of hard-to-comprehend prose that doesn’t add much to the post, or a list of “He did this. He thought this. He said this” without any further descriptors.

I have nothing against either of those types of writing, by the way! But I just personally am really proud of where my writing sits right now - enough detail, but not hard to comprehend.

... But admittedly it sometimes is a struggle for me to hit the balance between the two, though. I’ll oftentimes go too detailed or realize my writing is starting to become prose-y end up dialing it back, while other times I struggle to think of anything to include other than “Palmer did X”.

30. what’s the hardest character type to interact with?

Reclusively shy characters. Shyness is fine if you push your muse into interactions anyways, and it can actually lead to some fun scenes! A shy character being pushed out of their comfort zone is always fun, but... it’s very very hard when the muse kind of actively avoids interaction and is never pushed out of that comfort zone. It's like you have to fight to get the muse to engage with yours, and the thread can't move forwards.

32. what's the best way way to approach you and why?

If you want to approach me to chat about threads or muses or anything, the best thing you can do - if you don't have my ( current ) Discord - is probably... send me an ASK with your Discord info in it and ask me to add you. I check Discord much more often, Discord doesn’t eat my messages, and it isn’t a pain to use!

You can come to me in Tumblr DMs to exchange Discord info - or to chat or plot in general - but there is a very high chance that I will see the notification, check it, then forget to reply... or that I won’t see the notification at all. I check my ask box often and I will see your Discord info there.

Okay SO an idea struck me today:

John was trained to be a Kingsman. Sherlock had the option bc of his family but rejected it. He doesn't think about it again for years before he introduces John to his parents, thinking that it'll go okay bc everyone loves John. It goes PERFECTLY. Mummy loves him. Mr. Holmes is suspicious bc I mean the man HAS TO be a spy or something no one slips into a scene that perfectly without training

I'm talking John being his usual polite self

Multilingual conversations where Mycroft condecendingly tries to translate for him and John diplomatically retorts in perfect French

I'm talking ettiquette and being proper

I'm talking they start talking about Mrs. Holmes' work in science and John follows it quoting living with Sherlock as his largest source of knowledge

I'm talking Mr. Holmes and John going off about classical litterature

I'm talking they talk about John's time as an army medic and how he got into the army with perfect gun control and top physical condition (let's say he was recruited from med school?)

And that's when everyone starts leaving notes to Nile whenever they're away from her on missions or vacations.

Booker sends her letters during his banishment. Postcards, full-lenght novels, small updates, inquiries, you name it. He starts them with 'Chère rivierette'. It's how Nile learns French. Her French accent is very american.

People assume she's from NO or Quebec. She just tells them she's learning.

No but you know what I would LOVE to read in a Merthur fanfic once?

Arthur asking why not all sorcerers would come out after he legalizes magic, and Merlin is like 'Well you legalized same-sex relationships too, but you don't ask why they don't all come out because you know' and it just hits Arthur 'Emotionally repressed, light haired bisexual in love with his best friend' Pendragon like a tonne of bricks

And when Merlin tells him he's Emrys he's like 'Hold on a bloody second'
