Note: This was an old prompt that I wrote this one-shot for, since it has been sitting in my Google Docs ever since, I decided to just post it.

The “villain” dubbed Deceit by the local news outlets jotted down notes at his desk as a video of his last clash with his arch-nemesis, Logic played on the screen of his computer.

Nodding with satisfaction, he adds one last note and moves to the computer's mouse to close the program, but is interrupted by the buzzing of the intercom from the front gate to his estate.

Pressing the intercom button on the phone on his desk, he evenly responds, “Yes, what is it?” He didn't remember any guests or deliveries being scheduled, and was a bit curious, yet suspicious.

“Sorry to disturb you, sir. But there is a man who says he needs to see you. He says his name is Logic.” The guards voice reports over the device.

The villain's eyes widen, and quickly responds, “Bring him up. I will meet you at the front door.”

“Yes, sir.” The guard replies, and the intercom falls silent.

Deceit exits his study, grabbing his signature cape and donning it with a practiced swirl as he strides to the front door to his large home. Stopping at a side table next to the large door to put on his mask, gloves and bowler hat that rested there, he glances at the mirror next to the table and adjusted the mask slightly so no sign of his “disfigurement” could be seen. He tugs on the cuffs of his gloves nervously, and opens the door.

Before him stands a disheveled, bloodied Logic, dark blue and black costume ripped in several places, one sleeve of his jacket barely attached by a thread book-ended by the two large gate guards.

Before Deceit can take a breath to demand an explanation, the injured man spoke in a faint, trembling voice. “They didn't do this, someone else did.” As the hero hangs his head in fatigue.

Deceit dismisses the guards with a wave of his hand, and uses a gloved hand under the chin of the injured man to coax him to look up at him. “ Why did you come here, instead of tending to your injuries at home?”

“I can’t do this anymore.”

Deceit stared in shock at the hero, standing uninvited in front of the villain's home, weak and trembling in the cold.

“I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know how to keep fighting. Just... just k-kill me. Or lock me up. Or whatever you’ve been planning this whole time, I don’t care. But I can’t do this. I can’t live like this anymore. I can’t... I can’t keep fighting you—“ Logic's breath hitches, as he fights back a sob.

Deciet’s heart melted at the sight, the shaking hero, pale and exhausted and on the verge of tears.

“Hush, little hero, who did this to you?” Logic flinched at the sound of Deceit’s smooth  voice, their eyes going wide behind the mirrored visor as they were pulled into the villain’s arms. “Come in and have a cup of tea, I promise you’ll be safe here. I won’t let them hurt you anymore.”

Deceit steers the injured hero into his home, closing the door behind them, and ushers him towards his den, settling the hero in a plush chair near the fire, and rings for his butler, who arrives within moments of the summons.

“Thomas, get me the first aid kit and we will take tea here next to the fire.” Deceit instructs the butler as he takes off his gloves and hat along with his cape and hands them to the waiting man. “Yes, sir.” The butler says with a small bow and leaves the room.

Deceit grabs the thick, plush blanket draped over the back of his chair and wraps it around Logic's shoulders, then settles into the chair across from the battered hero and simply looks at the man before him.

Disheveled hair, a split lip, and the hero's mirrored visor mask is all he can see as Logic gathers the blanket around him. Scraped knuckles adorn the hands clutching the blanket, as the hero pulls the blanket tighter around his shoulders.

Thomas re-appears, setting a tray with a porcelain tea set down on the table next to Deceit, and slips the strap of a field med kit off his shoulder and hands it to his employer. “Is there anything else, sir?”

“This is quite satisfactory, Thomas. That will be all for now.” Deceit says as he sets the med kit down to pour the tea.

The butler bows, and Logic swears he saw the shimmer of scales on the man's neck in the firelight. “Yes, sir.” The butler swiftly turns, and before leaving, winks at the hero with a small smile before striding from the room.

“How do you take your tea, Logic? One lump or two, or do you prefer honey?” Deceit asks.

“One lump is adequate.” Logic softly responds as he reaches up to his visor mask, and to Deceits surprise, pulls it off, revealing two red-rimmed brown eyes. Dropping the visor to the floor, he reaches into his tattered jacket and produces a pair of glasses with thick black frames that survived unbroken somehow and slides them on his face. Deceit looks into Logic’s eyes as he hands the teacup to the battered hero and leans back into his chair with his own teacup as he realizes that he recognizes the broken man sitting before him.

“Logan Spaulding.” Deceit murmurs. “I know of you. You hold several doctorates and probably have a IQ higher than the entire mayor’s office combined. I have read all of your published papers. Why do you moonlight as the hero “Logic”? You can just sit in a lab, working for the betterment of mankind instead of hacking computer networks, making gadgets, catching cars and falling rubble with your telekinesis, and being the forensic lab for the other so-called heros this city has to offer. You waste your potential.”

Logan takes a sip of the tea and winces as his split lip objects to the movement. “I am surprised that you know who I am.”

Deceit chuckles. “We could have eventually been colleagues, or even possibly friends, if I hadn’t had my...accident.” He says as he motions toward his mask covered face. “I was the foremost authority on herpetology, with snakes as my focus. They are fascinating creatures. I also was well respected in the genetics and chemistry fields. I was so close to a genetic regeneration breakthrough before my work was stolen and my last experiment explosively sabotaged, injuring me and my lab assistant.”

“You are Drake Conroy. I should have been able to piece it together sooner.” Logan drinks the rest of his tea and sets the cup down on the small side table, wincing as his bruised body complains. “You signed everything you sent to your former employer with D.C., and on every device you used in your attempts to destroy their computers or labs. I noticed that everything you did was only against your former employer and their satellite labs and offices and no one else.”

Deceit downs his tea in one gulp and sets the cup down on the tray. “They need to be held accountable for their treasonous actions. They took my life’s work and tossed me aside like garbage. I have every right to be angry.” Deceit reaches down and grabs the med kit. “Let’s take a look at your injuries, shall we?”

Deceit starts with Logan’s face, taking stock of the minor abrasions, and the split lip, he moves down to the neck, watching Logan’s face for pain indications the entire time. As he raises Logic’s left arm, the hero winces and hisses in pain, and gets the same response when he checks the torso.”I think we should go to my lab. I can do a full body scan there so I will know the full extent of your injuries.”

“You have a body scanner? Wait, you stole it didn’t you?” Logan weakly says as Deceit helps him stand and carefully helps him walk to a nearby elevator.

“Of course, do you think that warehouse I destroyed last week held nothing of value? I got some wonderful brand new state-of-the-art lab equipment on my former employer’s dime. They were none the wiser. They probably think it was all destroyed, and already have received the insurance check.” Deceit chuckles as the hero looks at him with wide eyes. “I could afford to pay for it myself, of course. But it was just so satisfying to just steal it.”

The elevator door opens and Deceit carefully ushers him into a brightly lit and well-organized lab. A young assistant quickly approaches. “Dr. Conroy! Let me help you.”

“Careful of his left arm, Joan. We need to get him to the scanner.” Deceit instructs the assistant as they take Logan over to an examination table, the assistant carefully helping the hero with the task of sitting on the table, and gingerly helping Logan with taking off the tattered dark blue and black jacket, leaving the hero with only a blue undershirt, and helps Logan lay down on the table, grabbing a small pillow from a storage bin on the bottom of the table and quickly putting it under the hero's head as he laid down.

Deceit was powering up the scanner nearby, and as the system booted up, he positions the scanner in it’s starting position above Logan’s head. “Logan, this is Joan. They are my faithful lab assistant, and will be assisting me in your scan. Say hello, Joan.”

“Hello! It is good to meet you, Logan.” Joan says as they offer a hand for a handshake. Logan takes the offered hand and notices smooth green and yellow scales on the back, while giving the assistant a small smile. “A pleasure.”

Logan looks over at Deceit. “I have taken off my mask, why are you still wearing yours?”

Deceit flips some switches on the scanner and turns on the monitor that would display the scan findings. “I am a creature of habit, I’m afraid. If those idiots in the news outlets got a picture of my uncovered face, they would be even more adamant about the ridiculous name they have saddled me with.”

“They made up the name Deceit? Oh, wait. D.C. could easily be twisted by those idiot talking heads. My apologies.” Logan murmurs. “I would still like to see you, your secret is safe with me, I am at your mercy, remember.”

“Yes, you are. So be it.” Deceit grabs the bottom of his mask and pulls it off, showing the injured hero his guarded secret. The left side of his face was covered in yellow and green scales, with his left eye snake-like and yellow. “Behold, the lengths that Sanders Labs would go to steal my life’s work. I think they thought the explosion would kill me, but there was only flying glass and my genetic regeneration serum, Inland Taipei genetic material from another experiment and several other compounds in the destroyed glass beakers that infiltrated the cuts and burns on the left side of my body and eye that caused this. I was saved by the inept positioning of the explosive device. Joan only received burns on their arm and hand helping me out of the burning lab, but the experimental compounds soaking my clothes also got into their burns. They can cover their arm, and live a relatively normal life. My face is a more prominent feature. I rarely leave the house now.”

“Now I know why you preferred to work at night.” Logan whispers. Raising his right hand to touch the smooth scales on Deceits face. Deceit lets it happen without flinching, feels the touch, feather light, then is gone.

“Let us scan you now, shall we?” Deceit says after clearing his throat and pushes a series of buttons, then slowly moves the scanner over Logan’s body, glancing at the monitor occasionally.

“No permanent head trauma, neck looks good, rotator cuff on left arm is torn, right arm is okay, bruised ribs...oh, no.” Deceit stares at the monitor, then whispers to Joan, and the assistant scurries over to a workstation and retrieves a new needle and blood sample vials from the supplies there. “Stay still, they need to take some blood samples.”

Joan deftly and painlessly collects the samples, and quickly strolls over to a complicated machine and inserts a vial, and the machine immediately begins analyzing the blood. A few minutes later, a readout is printed, and handed to Deceit, who reads it and winces, glancing over at Logan with panic in their eyes.

“What did you find? What is going on?” Logan says with wide eyes as Deceit looks at him.

“Who did you fight that brought you to my doorstep, Logan. Don’t leave anything out.” Deceit sternly states, all business as he holds the readout in his hand.

Logic blinks and takes as deep a breath that he could manage with his bruised ribs. “I had to defuse a rather complicated bomb at the diamond exchange, so I had to do it in person since Prince or Morality claimed that they didn’t want to do it, when this mysterious individual jumped me with two others and proceeded to beat the hell out of me. I am not used to physical altercations, so it was a rather easy fight to win. I was taken completely unaware, I couldn't even use my telekinesis. Then I felt something sting me as I lay barely conscious on the ground. When I came to, I made the decision to put myself at your mercy since I had inadvertently read your mind and pulled your address from your thoughts after one of our exchanges last week, and we seem to have mutual respect for one another.” Logan quickly says, slightly panicked.

“You have been poisoned by boomslang venom.” Deceit says. “The people who beat you up wanted you to die an unpleasant death, it seems. It may even have been a hit.”

“The venom is hemotoxic, which destroys red blood cells and disrupts the clotting process. I will die of tissue and organ degeneration and internal bleeding.” Logan says with tears of panic welling in his eyes. “I don’t want to die, not like this.”

“Boomslangs are native to sub-Saharan Africa, meaning there is no anti-venom readily available here, and I won’t be getting a specimen until next week, so I wouldn't be able to make anti-venom until it is too late for you. I told you that they will not hurt you anymore when you appeared on my doorstep, I intend to help you by any means necessary. Luckily, boomslang venom works slowly, and you came here for help. You will not die. Not in my lab.” Deceit states with anger flashing in his yellow eye. He directs Joan to start an I.V. as he walks over to a small storage cabinet.

“I was recently able to steal back my research, and that is how I am going to save you. I know you noticed Thomas's neck. He had burned his hand rather badly one day, as in so bad, he would have lost fingers if he went to a conventional hospital. He came to me, and I was able to heal him. The only side-effect is the scales you undoubtedly saw.”

“You see, my genetic work included the study of the ability of some lizards to regenerate their tails after they have detached them to keep a predator busy as they make their getaway. I was working to apply that regenerative affect to humans during my last experiment. Strangely enough, the explosion combined the correct materials, but I do not know which were the correct ones, and which are just there to apply unwanted side effects. I am forced to combine everything that was on the table, including snake genetic material. I am working to narrow it down, but I have just started, and I only just recently received the correct equipment to do so. The only thing that I have concluded is that the type of snake genetics do not matter, but it will not work correctly without them at the moment.”

“As a kind of odd hobby, I made serums based on all the heroes of this fair city, using samples from snakes that fit their “signature colors”. This is yours. It has Blue Racer and Black Phase white-lipped python samples in it, along with the regenerative and healing serum we will add just before we administer it, because that needs to be freshly made. I do have a little Boomslang genetics in my samples to add to help nullify the venom as well. Are you willing to let me administer this serum to save your life, regardless of any side-effects? This is still very experimental.” Deceit asks, holding the bottle so Logan could see it.

Logan looks at the bottle in Deceits hand, weighing the pros and cons. Pros: he would not die a horrible death. Cons: he could possibly have snake scales on his body. The “not dying a horrible death” part outweighed the cons by a few tons. “Do it.”

Deceit nods and simply says “Restraints, please, Joan.” And Joan appears at Logan’s side, attaching padded wrist and ankle restraints to the table, and proceeding to restrain the hero to the table.

“We don’t want you to hurt yourself even more that you already are.” Deceit says as he works at a nearby counter. “It is simply for your safety. We don’t want you to thrash about and cause more trauma to yourself.” Deceit walks over to the restrained hero, and injects a large syringe full of the prepared serum into the top port of the I.V. bag attached to Logan’s arm and adjusts the flow to go faster. “It will begin soon. I will give you a sedative.” He then prepares another syringe, and injects it at the port nearest Logan’s arm. The heroes eyes flutter closed, as the sedative takes effect.

Joan cuts off the remains of the heroes shirt, and they notice the bruises on the pale torso. “Who do you think did this to him?” Joan asks with a whisper as they take Logan’s glasses off the sedated hero and attach heart monitor electrodes to the pale chest, and begin to hear the steady beeping of the heroes strong heart.

“I do not know, my friend. But when he awakes, we will find out together.” Deceit replies, while watching the bruises begin to fade as the serum takes effect, and a small patch of iridescent shimmering dark blue scales slowly appear under Logan’s right eye.

How to Backup WhatsApp Data [Images, Chats & documents] to PC

Data Backup is referred to as  –  copying or moving files or folders from regular storage device to backup storage device.  You can access this backed up data whenever you are in need of it. Data Backup is very necessary due to limitation of space in the  device you use on a daily basis for almost more than 15 hours a day  such as  a computer or mobile/smart phone.

Now-a-days, there are a lot of smartphones available with – the storage capacity of  16GB, 32GB, 64GB. The smartphone occupies space and there is  important data. Due to limited space in the phone,data backup becomes necessary. Even phones with big memory need backup as the memory fills up with the usage of multiple applications and important data.

Now, the question arises what kind of important data is there in a smartphone that needs a backup. Data like pictures, audios, videos and documents. Everybody “today” is using a smartphone and there are a lot of applications that are used for sharing data, videos, important documents and messages etc. One of the highly used applications is WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Usage

WhatsApp has a multi-purpose usage. You can freely chat with your contacts, share / exchange information in the form of marketing messages, greetings, occasional wishes etc. This type of information or data doesn’t require much space, however when it comes to sharing the content like pictures, documents, audios, videos  that are  larger in size and take  a good amount of space on the phone, that is when backup of WhatsApp data comes into picture. Your continuous usage of the WhatsApp application with such information will keep increasing the data and occupying the storage.

 A smartphone user also accesses other applications like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and so on.. These applications also fill up a lot of space in your phone hence Backup of important data becomes very necessary. If you are a smartphone photographer, the pictures you take are stored in your photos folder and it becomes one of the most data occupied folders.

Before taking the backup of your WhatsApp folder from your phone, you can manage your storage and data usage settings. There are ways to manage your data. Let us understand how you can manage data in your WhatsApp application.

WhatsApp – Manage Storage and Data Usage

While using WhatsApp, there are certain ways you can manage data and storage by using various options.

Remove duplicate images, videos, audios and documents. To do this:

Open your WhatsApp app.

Tap the 3-vertical dot icon from the top right corner. The menu opens up as below.

Tap Settings option. Tap the Storage and data usage option.

You will see the Manage Storage option.

Tap the Manage storage option. You will be able to review and delete duplicate images and documents. 

From the Forwarded Many times section, you can remove duplicates.

Tap the right arrow to see the images and other content that are forwarded many times.

Select by tapping the content box or select the Select All option to remove all duplicates.

You have successfully removed duplicates.

The second way to remove unwanted files from WhatsApp is to go to the WhatsApp folder and remove the content.

Go to your phone’s file manager. You will see the WhatsApp section as below.

Tap the right arrow and remove unwanted WhatsApp data from the list of documents, images and other media files.

The third way is to remove unwanted chat. To do this:

Go to the Chats tab in WhatsApp.

Long press the contact. You will see the contact name ticked. On the top, you will see the options to delete or archive the chat.

To remove the chat messages of the selected contact, tap the delete icon.

To archive the chat messages of the selected contact, tap the archive icon.

Another way to manage your WhatsApp chats is to go to the Settings option.

Tap the Chats option. 

Tap the Chat history option. You can select the appropriate options such as Clear all chats, Archive all chats Delete all chats or Export chat.

You can also go to your phone’s Internal Storage folder and select the WhatsApp folder and the Media folder.

From the list of folders, select unwanted folders and remove the data.

After performing the above steps, you are ready to take data backup of your WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Data Backup to PC [step-by-step guide]

The first thing you need to do is – schedule the backup based on the frequency available in your WhatsApp settings.

To schedule the backup, follow the steps below.

For taking Chat Backup, go to your WhatsApp → Settings menu → Chats option. 

Tap the Chat backup option. 

Select the option Back up to Google Drive for setting the frequency of taking backup.

Never – refers to not scheduling the backup

Only when I tap “Back up” – refers to manually taking backup as and when you need

Daily – refers to taking backup daily

Weekly – refers to taking weekly backup

Monthly – refers to taking monthly backup

To manually take backup, tap the BACK UP button. The backup will start and show you % in terms of progress.

Once the data is successfully backed up on your Google Drive, you can download the same folder in your PC.

To do so, open Google Drive on your PC. To open Google Drive, type www.drive.google.com.

Go to Backups on the left menu for your Google Drive.

Click on the backup to download on your PC.

Another way to copy WhatsApp data backup files to your PC is by connecting the USB data cable to your PC and phone. Once you have connected your phone successfully, you will see the internal storage of your drive in your PC’s file explorer.

Your backup files will be created in the Internal Storage of your phone. Go to the WhatsApp folder and tap the Database folder.

To move the data, you can cut and paste the folder on your PC’s directory where you want to keep the backup files.

To copy the data, you can copy and paste the folder on your PC’s directory where you want to keep the backup files.

Another simple way is to send/attach the backup files to your email account  and whenever you open your email box on PC just download and save all the backup files. Save the files in your backup folder or directory of the PC.

There are some quick tips while taking a backup of your WhatsApp data. 

You can enable the setting to backup the data when your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. This will save your mobile data.

To do this, go to Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up over → Wi-Fi only.

You can choose to include video received and sent via chat while taking a backup.

To do this, go to Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Include videos. Switch it ON.

How to buy into journalism’s blockchain future (in only 44 steps) » Nieman Journalism Lab

I’m pretty sure I purchased Civil tokens yesterday — literally buying into an experiment to strengthen journalism by putting some of it on the blockchain.

After passing two tests, uploading my passport and driver’s license to unfamiliar websites, and plunking down a large (for me) sum for a cryptocurrency, I was cleared for token takeoff. When the sale began at 10 a.m., I indicated how many Civil tokens I wanted and sent off that valuable cryptocurrency to pay for them.

And I got nothing.

No tokens appeared in my digital wallet. No comforting “your tokens are being shipped” email. Not even a “Share your purchase with a friend!” button. The “purchased” area in my account was blank.

But I’m actually at peace with that. I think it’s going to work out, and I’m into this journey.

My motivation

Earlier this year, my friends Manoush Zomorodi and Jen Poyant left their public radio jobs to join this new journalism…thing named Civil. I had heard tidbits about Civil, and was honestly pretty confused. All the smart people I talked to seemed confused, too.

Manoush’s and Jen’s podcast ZigZag attempts to explain it, and I think I can take a stab now: Civil is a system designed to foster and reward quality journalism in a decentralized way, in contrast to platforms like Facebook and Google. The system’s backbone is the blockchain-based Civil token, abbreviated CVL. Holders of tokens can start news organizations in the system, challenge the membership of other news organizations in the system, and/or cast votes when such challenges arise.

I have no idea if it will work. But I’m interested, and I’d rather participate than watch from the sidelines. So I was willing to give it a whirl — and was okay with losing a little money in the process. (Plus my employer, Quartz, just launched a new cryptocurrency newsletter called Private Key I’ve been reading.)

So the time seemed right to jump in. I just needed to buy some CVL…though it turns out there’s no just about it.

The ingredients

Here’s what I actually needed to participate:

Quick note: I’m talking about real money here and there was a moment when I technically lost $100. So please don’t take my experience as gospel, or even 100 percent accurate — I’m a beginner at this, I expected to be imperfect along the way, and even Civil’s instructions have changed in the last few days.

That said, about a week ago, I followed the path described in this PDF. Here were my steps.

Get a Token Foundry account

First stop was at Token Foundry, the site from which I’d eventually purchased my CVL tokens. At this point, I:

Started the sign up process.

Studied this PDF about how it all works, what the risks are, and how I shouldn’t toy with large parts of my net worth.

Took a quiz to make sure I actually understood all of those things.

Passed the quiz!

Uploaded a photo of my passport to prove I’m me. This was not my favorite step, but I knew it would be coming and also that it was required.

Took a selfie with my laptop camera.

Waited for the email saying I was legit and verified as me.

Got the email, and was good to go.

Register for Civil’s token sale

To get CVL, I needed to register for the sale at Token Foundry. So I:

Went to the Civil project page.

Read the constitution

Read the white paper

Read the four uses of CVL tokens

Read all of the other material on the site (some of which I knew from the ZigZag podcast).

Clicked “register.”

Took yet another quiz specific to Civil, which included the contract into which I enter by buying CVL tokens. This was pretty key, because here I learned that I can’t sell my tokens to just anyone; they have to be Civil-approved. Also, I can’t sell CVL unless I actively participate in the Civil system by, for example, voting.

Passed the quiz!

Declared my intent to buy a specific dollar amount of CVL tokens.

The upshot is that CVL isn’t designed as a way to get rich quickly. Fortunately, that wasn’t my goal. Also, I’m bad at that, always.

Get a cryptocurrency account

I would soon need to turn real dollars into blockchain-based cryptocurrency — in this case, Ethereum tokens, which is abbreviated ETH. I needed ETH to buy CVL.

Two things have changed since I did this. First, Civil announced that, starting October 2, they would allow people to buy CVL directly with dollars — so no need to buy ETH first. Second, the website recommended to buy ETH shifted from Coinbase to Gemini.

I used Coinbase, and on that site, I:

Signed up for a Coinbase account.

Set up two-factor authentication.

Provided a picture of my drivers license, front and back, using my laptop’s camera.

Got verified as me, which took about a minute.

Linked a debit card to the account.

Looked into my bank account to find two tiny withdrawal “holds” and reported them back to Coinbase to confirm my account.

At this point, I was ready to inject real dollars into the process.

Set up Metamask

But neither Coinbase nor Token Foundry is where I’d actually buy, sell, or exchange tokens. That happens in Metamask.

Metamask is a browser extension that added a little fox icon to my browser’s toolbar.

Clicking the fox opens a window where I could buy Ethereum and, later, exchange Ethereum for CVL tokens. It is also the temporary “hot wallet” where I can store my Ethereum and CVL tokens. (For longterm storage, I’ll use a “cold” hardware wallet.)

So here’s how I set up and used Metamask:

Installed Metamask from the Chrome Web Store.

Created a Metamask account.

Got a list of 12 words that constitute the passphrase for my Metamask wallet — and, per the instructions from Token Foundry, decidedly did not photograph nor store these electronically anywhere. I put pen to paper, and then put paper in a safe deposit box.

Then, inside the Metamask window, clicked “buy” and instructed Metamask to use my Coinbase account (and the debit card stored there) to buy some Ethereum.

And it didn’t work.

Troubleshooting

Turns out I was trying to buy too much. I knew the Coinbase limit for debit cards was $300, so I entered $300. But it failed.

I tried $299. Also failed.

I figured out that there were some transaction fees that were putting me over the limit. So I tried $250.

At this point, my bank was on high alert and declined the transaction. (I later confirmed this when I had to ask my bank to unblock my card.)

So I gave Coinbase another debit card, which promptly got declined. I was clearly setting off alarms everywhere. (Again, confirmed.)

Finally, I tried linking a bank account directly to Coinbase. The instructions said this could take up to seven days to go through, which was okay because I was still more than a week out from the CVL token sale. But since my bank was on the Coinbase list of banks it can readily talk to, it worked right away.

I went back to the Metamask window and yet again tried to purchase Ethereum, this time using my bank account.

And it…worked?

The sale went through, it said. But there was no deduction in my bank account and no Ethereum in my Metamask wallet. Was it gone?

Then I found that there was Ethereum in my Coinbase account. Maybe this was the seven-day wait?

We’re in the Ether

The next morning, the Ethereum was sitting in my Metamask wallet.

And…it had already dropped in value by $25. It would drop a full $100 — and then recover — before I got to use it to buy CVL. As the excellent Quartz headline writers point out, the cryptocurrency markets had suffered a “sudden and severe faceplant.”

But I was ready for the sale.

Time to buy

At 9:59 a.m. Tuesday, I popped open my laptop. The Civil token sale opened a minute later.

I went to the Civil site on Token Foundry and clicked “buy.”

For my payment method, I chose “Metamask,” the browser plugin and cryptocurrency wallet holding my Ethereum. I confirmed the purchase amount, waited a minute and saw this:

I even got a link taking me to the digital details of the transaction on the blockchain, clearly showing my ETH went to Token Foundry.

But there was no record that once there, those tokens had become CVL tokens, or even that they will at some point in the future. The only receipt I had of a CVL token transaction was the “success” screenshot above I happened to snap because I planned to write about my experience.

After reading so much about the immutability of blockchain records and keeping your cryptocurrency secure, the lack of even a “pending” transaction record was a little odd.

Looking good

But I wasn’t concerned. One thing I’ve learned in this process is that the Civil folks have thought a lot about this system and this sale. Plus, I had both the screenshot and a blockchain transaction showing I sent Token Foundry a bunch of Ethereum.

Then, about 6 p.m. Tuesday evening, eight hours after clicking “buy,” I got a comforting “your purchase is its way” note from Token Foundry:

Of greater concern might be that the entire sale won’t go through at all if Civil doesn’t sell more than $8 million in tokens by October 15.

After exactly 12 hours, the tally of CVL sold was at $98,984. At that rate, assuming people buy 24 hours a day, I think Civil would come up a couple million short. [Editor’s note: After 24 hours, at 10 a.m. ET Wednesday, the total was at $116,655.]

I hope I’m wrong. I’d like to see how this experiment plays out — and I have a small stake in it.

Navigation Wars: Google Maps vs Waze vs Apple Maps The dawn of the smartphone age had us cheering for GPS chips and easy, on-the-go navigation. No longer were we beholden to sites like MapQuest (which still exists as a mobile app, by the way) and printing out directions. Instead, we could open up our maps app, input a destination, and receive live, turn-by-turn directions. It was like having a pocket-sized Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, or Ferdinand Magellan as your permanent wingman. It was surely also a death blow to paper maps — but it didn’t stop there. Once we could navigate with our smartphones, the question became: “which software does it better?” Obviously, Google Maps is the best-known map app — it’s basically synonymous with mobile navigation. In fact, Google Maps was originally the iPhone’s default, preinstalled navigation software, until Apple launched its own Apple Maps. An app called Waze emerged as a third-party alternative, developing quite a following before Google bought it. We at Android Authority decided it was time to settle this once and for all. We’ve analyzed of all three apps, identifying their weaknesses and breaking down their unique strengths. Welcome to the Navigation Wars: Waze vs Google Maps vs Apple Maps. Who will reign supreme? Waze vs Google Maps vs Apple Maps — Google Maps One might expect Google Maps to take the gold. It’s Google, after all. The company has put incomprehensible amounts of money and resources into mapping the world. Beyond simply mapping the streets, the search giant sent out a fleet of Street View cars — which, according to a report from a few years ago, have collectively driven an estimated seven million miles — to take 360-degree photos along 99 percent of all public roads in the U.S. Users get to actually preview their route from a first-person perspective. Google is continuously repeating and perfecting this process in countries all over the world. Google Maps can give you directions on your next Florida vacation, but also when you finally take that trip to Greece. More recently, Google started providing detailed 3D imaging in lots of highly-populated and tourist-heavy areas. So in addition to getting a first-person street view of your route, you can zoom out to see a computer-rendered model of the surrounding area for contextual information such as the shapes and sizes of buildings. Algorithms built into Google Maps can even account for things like traffic jams. Basically, the software monitors user location and movement to see how they move through certain areas and compares that to historical data, so Google Maps can put out a traffic alert when drivers start to slow down. It may sound simple, but making it all work requires some finesse. Google has invested into complex software that provides detailed 3D imaging in lots of highly-populated and tourist-heavy areas. When you open Google Apps, you get a very clean interface. At the top, you’re invited to either search for your destination — obviously employing Google’s popular search engine — or input an address. Whether you’ve selected a destination, the map shows you the destination on the map, as well as reviews (if it’s a business), the amount of time it would take you to travel there, an option to learn more about the destination, and a big blue button that says “DIRECTIONS,” which will begin plotting your route. It will typically give you the choice of a few routes, depending on how many different ways there are to get to your destination. Arguably the biggest selling feature of those standalone GPS units we used to buy for our vehicles was spoken turn-by-turn directions. Google Maps rolled out turn-by-turn directions a couple years back and currently offers three options: spoken directions for each step of your route, no spoken directions, or an alert mode, which means Google Apps will only speak to you about things like travel alerts and missed turns. Google Maps allows you to program multiple stops into a trip or conduct a search for an additional stop while still en route. In operation, Google Maps maintains its clean UI. Your location is denoted by an arrow points in the direction you’re facing. From what I can tell, the app uses the direction in which you were last moving to determine the direction to point the arrow since the arrow will change direction if you begin to reverse. On occasion, though, the app seems to get confused about which direction you’re facing. This tends to happen when you’re sitting still for a few minutes (like at a stoplight), or if you initiate a trip while you’re sitting still, at which time the app may think you’re diverting from the route and begin needlessly amending it. If I start a trip while sitting at a stoplight, for instance, the app can’t seem to remember the direction in which I had just been traveling and may tell me I need to turn around when I’m actually facing the right way. These hiccups are easy to deal with and won’t cause any catastrophes, but it’s worth making note of them. Some Google Maps features are particularly useful. You can program multiple stops into a trip or search for an additional stop while still en route. The options menu offers toggles for different map views, including satellite (replaces the standard map appearance with satellite images), terrain (overlays a topographical map over the existing roadmap), and traffic (adds color-coded traffic details to all roads instead of just the ones you’re traveling). Even something as simple as being able to choose different modes of travel — car, bus or public transit, walking, and biking — is a thoughtful addition that really expands your options with Google Maps. On top of directions, Google Maps contains tons of useful information about nearby businesses, restaurants, and points of interest, with plenty of filters to find what you're looking for. Due to the bevy of information Google Maps contains, it has a few added functions. One of my favorites is using it to find restaurants. When you open Google Maps, open the menu bar on the lefthand side and select “Explore.” This will open a directory of restaurants and other venues nearby. Along the top, you have a toggle with which you can filter the results by meal (options are Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner), find a place where you can get your next caffeine fix (Coffee), or plan for your evening social hour (Drinks). Naturally, Google is always rolling out new features and improvements. It’s gained some pretty robust offline functionality, asking you for your permission to download a chunk of the map (your general vicinity) or to save trips to local storage so you can pull them up without a data connection. Essentially, it makes Google Maps useful even when you don’t have an internet connection. If you are using Google Maps with Android 8.0 Oreo or higher, you can use the picture-in-picture mode. You can see a small window that shows Google Maps working on the main app page. You can see the map, a turn indicator, which road you are currently traveling on, and an ETA for your destination. Google Maps recently added a way to search for reviews of stores, restaurants, hotels and other places from within the app. There’s also a new tab labeled “For You” which offers recommendations of places and businesses in your immediate area, especially brand new or “trending” ones, based on Google’s data. A number of voice commands also work with Google Maps to do things like mute or unmute the voice guidance, inquire about your next turn, avoid highways or tolls, and find a gas station. It may sound like Google already has it in the bag, but keep reading to find out if that’s really the case. (Insert devilish grin here.) Waze vs Google Maps vs Apple Maps — Waze As someone who appreciates and uses both Android and iOS devices, I’m pretty familiar with both Apple and Google’s navigation apps. Aside from a handful of times over the past few years, though, I’d never really used Waze much. Before I started writing this article, I took a good 10 days or so to familiarize myself with Waze. Did you know that Google has owned Waze since 2013? If we’re splitting hairs, Waze is technically owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet. It allegedly operates mostly independently from Google, but there has definitely been some crossing of the streams. The acquisition of Waze brought traffic alerts to Google Maps later that year. Waze has incorporated some of Google’s data too, including Street View. You wouldn’t know Waze was owned by Google by looking at it — it has a completely different aesthetic. Personally, Waze’s cartoonish appearance reminds me of emojis. Everything looks very bubbly, but Waze manages to maintain minimalist elements, which keeps it from being too much. But the differences between Google Maps and Waze are more than skin deep. When you open the app, you’re prompted to login or create an account, both of which are done by either connecting your Facebook account or using your mobile phone number. Once you make it to the main screen, the map includes a notification to let you know how many “Wazers” are in your proximity. Right off the bat, there’s an inherently social element to Waze throughout much of the user experience. Unlike other navigation apps, Waze suggests logging in to make the most of its social features. While Google Maps is sparse and almost utilitarian, Waze feels a little more dressed-up, with more bells and whistles. You can connect Waze to your Spotify accoun to manage your music directly from the Waze app by adding a bar along the top of the screen to select from your playlists and preferred stations. You can report traffic, car accidents, speed traps, road closures, and other such things to your fellow Wazers. This function plays a significant role in Waze’s ability to keep users abreast of their local traffic conditions. Waze almost goes overboard on extra features, ranging from Spotify integration, to petrol station prices, and a huge range of novelty turn-by-turn navigation voices. You can do things like manage your account details (set a profile picture, view your friends list, read your messages), as well as manage your favorite places and check your planned drives in the main menu. The planned drive feature is really interesting. In essence, you set a destination for a future date, so when the time comes you can start navigating there with just one or two clicks. It’s really easy, too; when you search for a destination, you can either click “Go” or “Later” to choose the date and time for your trip. Alternately, it can glean information from your Facebook calendar, scheduling trips to specific destinations based on the events you’re attending. If that’s not impressive enough, Waze adjusts how long the trip will take based on traffic at different times of day, so a 15 minute trip in the morning may take 30 minutes during rush hour. Waze is even courteous enough to remind you when it’s time to leave so that you’ll arrive on time. In addition to being able to either schedule or initiate a trip to that destination, Waze can guide you to the closest parking lot to your destination. I your destination happens to be a mall or retail outlet, it’ll give you the option to set your destination as the closest parking lot or allow you to choose from other parking options nearby. I didn’t really get to take advantage of this feature, but I can see it really being a godsend in an unfamiliar place. If you like customization options, Waze offers a bunch of different voices for turn-by-turn instructions. Many of the most populated countries get at least two options, but English-speakers have a plethora of options. Each voice is given its own name, like Jane, Nathan, or Boy Band for Americans, and Kate, Thomas, or Simon for those in the U.K. In the past, Waze even offered celebrity voices, including Morgan Freeman and more recently Liam Neeson. Waze relies on data collected and posted by its real-time users and has a much more inherently social feel than your standard map app. As you get deeper and deeper into Waze, you find all these nifty little surprises. In the settings menu, you can go into “Gas stations & prices” to choose your preferred gas station chain (if you happen to have one). You can also set the speedometer to only show up if you happen to go over the speed limit. With a toggle, you can control whether or not you see nearby Wazers on your friends list. There’s a whole host of map display options you can toggle, including speed cameras, other Wazers, road hazards, and more. A few months ago, Waze got a big update adding hands-free navigation, using just your voice. The feature, called simply Talk to Waze, can be turned on by heading into Settings > Sound & voice > Talk to Waze > Toggle Listen for “OK Waze.” Then just say “Ok Waze” to initiate a drive, get a preview of the route ahead, send reports, or add a pit stop without touching your phone. Other recently added features include adding routes optimized for motorcycles. There’s also a new HOV lane feature for carpooling drivers, or those with a special pass or in an electric, hybrid, or clean-fuel car. If you are driving such a car, and there are HOV lanes available on your route, Waze will show you additional navigation options and arrival times. Another recent update improved the ETA feature, allowing users to get an estimated traffic forecast for your route. Waze may sound bloated with needless features, but most of them are tucked out of the way and accessible only from the menus. None of Waze’s additional features feel imposing or like they’re coming between you and the purpose of the app, which is to get directions from one place to another. There are tons of bells and whistles available if you want to use them. As mentioned previously, there’s something inherently social about using Waze, an interesting but not totally surprising concept in 2018. Overall, my experience using Waze was extremely pleasant. Despite having so much going on, the app is very snappy and responsive, although I may not have used it long enough to encounter the hiccups that surely come up from time to time. Waze vs Google Maps vs Apple Maps — Apple Maps Prior to iOS 6, Apple smartphones had Google Maps preinstalled as the default navigation app. In hindsight, Apple creating its own alternative to Google’s popular trip-mapping app was inevitable, if for no other reason than to boot the competition’s software off the iPhone. As usually happens with newborn software, Apple Maps was plagued with bugs and map inaccuracies for the first couple years. It’s gotten a lot better since then. I’m a lover of both Apple and Android, so I’m nearly as familiar with Apple Maps as Google Maps (although having access to the latter with any desktop browser basically ensures some disparity between the two). In certain ways, I may even like Apple Maps best of all. Compared to both Google Maps and Waze, Apple Maps has arguably the most pleasing look and has exemplary integrations with other iOS apps. After that rough first year, Apple invested lots of time and energy (and money) into improving Maps, and it shows. Compared to both Google Maps and Waze, Apple Maps has arguably the most pleasing look. Of course, appearance is subjective, but there’s something very polished and contemporary about Apple Maps, particularly since its slight redesign earlier this year. It manages to achieve a modern feel without looking sparse like Google Maps or borderline-cartoonish like Waze. It’s elegant, and very Apple. Perhaps taking a cue from Google Maps, Apple Maps has much better integrations with other iOS apps. Sprinkled throughout Apple Maps, you’ll find suggestions for scheduling and upcoming events for which you may need to travel. It’s reminiscent of how clicking addresses will take you into Google Maps from Gmail or Inbox or Google’s numerous other services. However, Apple Maps integrations extend even outside the Apple apps family, including things like OpenTable for making restaurant reservations, ride-sharing apps, and, of course, Apple Pay to pay for it all. Similar to Google’s app, Apple Maps has a very clean and straightforward interface. Opening Apple Maps brings up the map with an overlap toward the bottom, giving you a place to input an address or search for a destination. It also offers suggestions and the ability to click a single button to begin navigating home. If you were already home, it may offer you navigation to your workplace or a destination pertaining to an upcoming event in your calendar. It sounds like a lot, and while everything is big and readable, it’s also not totally in the way. One of the updates to Apple Maps brought something called “Flyover Mode,” a Google Earth-esque feature into the mix. In essence, it creates a 3D render of the map, allowing you to essentially fly over it like you’re in a helicopter. The feature itself isn’t especially groundbreaking, but it’s fun and certainly a welcome feature. Anything not already visible in the app is usually accessible with an upward or downward swipe, appearing neatly and organized on overlaying cards. You can swipe upward on an upcoming trip to view alternate route options. It’s a nice feature to have if, for instance, you happen to see that there’s traffic on your would-be route. And yes, the app can give you that traffic information, too. Apple has tried to make Maps as informative as possible and, in doing so, includes some really thoughtful details. If you click on a landmark, it usually brings up a card showing a picture, offering you directions, reviews (via Yelp, of course), and a link to Wikipedia to learn more about it. As well, if you zoom into a part of the map sufficiently far away from your actual location, it’ll show you that location’s local weather in the bottom-righthand corner. Apple Maps is focused on providing navigation. By comparison, Google is much more focused on places, which means that it’s able to provide both navigation as well as allowing you to simply use Google Maps like tourists would use paper maps as they explored their surroundings. When it comes to the actual map, though, there’s both good and bad news. The bad news is that Apple Maps just isn’t as robust as Google Maps (or Waze, for that matter, since it incorporates Google data). If you zoom into the same section of a large city on both Google and Apple Maps, Google’s map contains more accurate data, particularly when it comes to the names and locations of businesses. In fact, someone decided to track changes to both maps over a year and found that for any given section of the map, Apple Maps averaged fewer businesses than Google. However, as long as you search for and bring up the address of the business, Apple Maps can get you there — even if the business isn’t on the map. That brings us to another key difference between Google and Apple Maps. Clearly, Apple Maps is focused on providing navigation, and that’s a good thing since navigation is the point of these apps. By comparison, Google is much more focused on places — it’s able to provide navigation while allowing you to simply use Google Maps like a tourist would a paper map as they explore their surroundings. Again, Google simply has more data with which to build a map containing. It’s almost an unfair comparison, but it’s a difference that’s worth mentioning. It seems that Apple Maps is mostly reliant on map information licensed from TomTom and from acquiring a handful of smaller companies over the years. Some of those companies are WifiSlam for interior maps, HopStop and Embark for public transportation, Locationary for improving mapping abilities, and BroadMap for managing and analyzing map data. TechCrunch This is all expected to change soon. Apple’s SVP Eddy Cue recently told TechCrunch the company is working a major revamp of the Maps app and service, and will use first-party data collected from iPhone owners. My daughter broke her arm. She is insured with my husband's insurance. The insurance company agreed to pay for the hospital and doctor bills but the doctor's office never submitted the bill to our insurance company. 1 Preamble

For the purposes of this assignment I have demonstrated 3 different ways in which photo images may be presented they are as follows:

a) An A3 print on a foam board which was displayed within college.

b) A Google Slides presentation which illustrates how to attach a print to a foam board, but could also have been used as a method to present a series of other images such as those contained in either one of my chosen themes for the image capture assignment. This presentation is not included here on Tumblr but has been shared separately with my tutor.

c)  A photobook, the whole of which is presented via a series of screen grabs in a post below,I have the book in my possession and am happy to submit it if required.

2 Introduction   

Photo images are dear to us all,and more people than ever are taking pictures whether they be of family and friends,their travels or some other interests and once those images have been captured the question arises as to how best to present or display them.In the not too distant past, before the advent of digital cameras and the ubiquitous camera phone that question was fairly easily answered,as whatever method was chosen to show the final image it almost invariably entailed the use of hard copies of pictures  printed on photographic paper. However,the rapid rise in the  popularity of digital photography in the past decade or so, fuelled by the fact that most people now carry mobile phones which have integrated cameras, has radically changed the way we interact with photographs.Much of this change can be attributed to the transformation of photos from physical objects to pieces of data,and so where envelopes and shoeboxes containing prints and negatives once ruled they have been replaced by hard drives and, more recently, “cloud” systems, as preferred methods of image storage. Similarly,those digital images are far more likely to be shared on computer and phone screens, often via password protected online photo galleries that have easy to share links which make them easily accessible to any authorised person,anywhere in the world at any time.What can only be described as a revolution in photography has therefore introduced a myriad of new ways in which photo images may be presented.

3  Some Options For The Presentation Of Photo Images

Before discussing my chosen method for presenting a series of images for this assignment, along with my reasons why, I will give a fairly brief overview of some of the more popular digital and practical options for the presentation of photo images. 

3.1 Digital Options For The Presentation Of Photo Images 

I have to say that I really appreciate the ease in which digital images can be stored,displayed and shared with others,not least because it is very inexpensive especially if you choose not to turn those images into hard copies.Digital image capture essentially enables everyone who has a camera to present and share their images,and there are many freely available platforms available for the storage,presentation and sharing of digital images.I personally store my images on the hard drive of my lap top: Canon Irista, a free online storage facility available to registered Canon equipment users and Google Drive as back ups.I also use 2 Tumblr blogs, one for presenting work undertaken for C&G 305 Photo Image Capture and for some elements of this assignment,and the other as a digital album to share with family and friends, and what a great thing to be able to do - share images with people at any time, anywhere in the world.All in all I love the opportunities provided by digital technology and not least the fact that it saves me a lot of money through not having to pay to have rolls of film developed, but also because I can store lots of images for viewing easily without taking up physical space.Arguably there are also environmental benefits through reducing the use of  ink and paper. 

There are a whole host of digital options for presenting and sharing  photo images, and these options taken together probably account for how the vast  majority of photo images are presented and viewed nowadays.This is not really surprising for as already mentioned, it is relatively inexpensive to use these digital options as compared to the more practical options which entail using hard copies of images.I will discuss a few of the main digital options here before looking at the more practical options in section 3.2 below.

a) Digital Slide Shows On A Computer: I always upload images from an SDHD card into a file onto the hard drive of my computer to begin with in order to view them and then sort them from there.After sorting I retain most files on my hard drive but I always back them up by utilising Canon's online image storage space called Irista which allows the storage of original size images including RAW. It is easy to create a presentation using photos stored on your computer hard drive, and in my case I usually do so via Windows Photo Viewer which is part of the Windows 7 software package installed on my PC..The photo viewer enables you to produce a slideshow presentation of images on the computer in order to share photos of holidays etc. with others.This form of presentation is probably the most cost effective as it does not require an internet connection.   b) Digital Photo Frames: are another good way of presenting either single images or a series of images via a slide show by simply inserting an SDHD card containing images. c) Blogs: Probably the widest used method of digitally presenting photo images is via a blog which is essentially an online journal or diary.A blog site, or as some people prefer to call it, a blogging platform, is a service that lets you publish your content in the form of a blog straight onto the internet.Blogs are both easy to use and free which enables tens of millions of people around the world to engage with using them.A blog is a place to express yourself to the world,a place to share your thoughts and your passions,it goes beyond just writing,and can involve videos, photos and other forms of media It’s really up to you as the author of your blog to shape it into what you want it to be.  This is also a great method of showing the world your work for anyone,with your  consent, can view the images you wish to display on it.

ci) TUMBLR Of all the available blogging platforms I am most familiar with Tumblr. Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking website which allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog.Bloggers can follow other bloggers' blogs and have other bloggers follow them. Bloggers can also make their blogs private or accessible to a select band of family and friends.For bloggers the website's features are accessed from a "dashboard" interface which is very easy to use.

Through the dashboard, users are able to comment, reblog, and like posts from other blogs that appear on their dashboard. The dashboard allows the user to upload text posts, images, video, quotes, or links to their blog with a click of a button displayed at the top of the dashboard. Users are also able to connect their blogs to their Twitter and Facebook accounts, if they have one which I don't, and so whenever they make a post, it will also be sent as a tweet and a status update.

I currently use 2 blogs on Tumblr one of which (this one!) I  use as an online workbook for my Level 3 City and Guilds assignments which includes written work and many photo images related to the courses.The other is used as a photoblog to which I upload images of the things I have been up to - mainly holidays, and share them with family and friends who can access them via a password and view them online much as they would a physical photo album.While this is fantastic,and free,it is also very utilitarian when it comes to how photos can be presented as their is little room to customise or be creative with presentation. 

cii) FLIKR is a photo sharing platform and social networking site where users upload photos for others to see.Flikr is a photo-centric platform built for both professional photographers and enthusiasts to show off their work while enjoying the work of others.Users create a free account and upload their own photos (and videos) to share with friends and followers online.A free Flickr account gets you 1,000 GB of storage,along with powerful photo editing tools and smart photo management. 

ciii)  Instagram is a mobile, desktop, and Internet-based photo-sharing application and service that allows users to share pictures and videos either publicly, or privately to pre-approved followers.

d) Online Digital Slide Shows:There are many slide show software programs on the market the two most popular being Microsoft's Power Point and Google's Slides. There appear to be many pros and cons relating to both programmes,but as I've never used any programme other than Slides I'm not really in a position to begin to make any comparisons based on experience although the consensus in reviews of both suggest that PowerPoint has more features.However,there is one key difference between PowerPoint and Slides and that is that PowerPoint along with other options on the market has to be purchased whereas Slides does not, which as an amateur enthusiast makes it the clear winner for me.   

di) Google Slides is a free presentation program which is part of a free, web-based software office suite offered by Google within its Google Drive service.Slides is Google's flagship presentation app that lives inside the browser as a part of Google Docs. It's completely free and the only requirement to be able to use it is to have a Google account. Moreover,the cloud based software means that there is no need for software installation and makes it accessible anywhere.It also allows multiple users to collaborate and, if necessary,edit the same document without getting in each others' way.Presentations are automatically saved and instantly shareable.Slides has a variety of presentation themes, hundreds of fonts, embedded video, animations, and can also be created on DVD to music which is a good way to present wedding photography for example.One of its more common uses is to make a live presentation to a class or conference and this can be facilitated by linking a computer to a projector in order to use a large screen.I love Slides because it is a multi purpose,user friendly piece of software, and I would have had no problem using it as my main presentation method for this assignment had it not been for the fact that I love the option I have chosen even more.

Nevertheless,I have used this presentation method to demonstrate one way in which Slides may be used via describing and illustrating the process for attaching a print to a foam board.The task of attaching the print was undertaken in order that it could be displayed in college as another component of Assignment 211. 

3.2  Practical Options For The Presentation Of Photo Images   Hard copies of photo images are still popular when it comes to presenting images due to the fact that there are so many different ways of doing so.I will give a fairly brief overview of some of the more popular practical options for the presentation of photo images,including the photobook which is the option that I have chosen for the presentation of my own images in line with the requirements of this assignment. a) Photo Albums: The photo album containing any number of individual printed images or photos has been around since Victorian times and was,until the digital revolution,one of the most popular ways of presenting photo images and most families would have at least one family album containing photos of a wedding,holidays etc.. As discussed earlier, since digital image capture took over from film  people have become less inclined to have their photos printed, and while the photo album still has a role,especially for weddings,they are far more likely to share them on their computers and/or phones, often via the accessing of online photo galleries.   b) Photo Frames: Framing prints is probably still one of the most, popular ways of presenting them as nearly every home seems to have some framed photos usually of family members and special family occasions..There are a multitude of different types of frames to choose from giving a choice of different shapes, sizes,colour and material depending on,amongst other things,the style of photo;the setting in which it will be placed; an individual's taste and the context etc.etc..  c) Miscellaneous: Digital technology has made it possible to print a photo image on just about anything you care to think of, and all of the major players in the industry are ready to oblige at very competitive prices.Standard fare includes calendars,wall art,posters,canvas prints,acrylic prints,foam board prints, photo greeting cards,postcards,playing cards,jigsaws,mugs,cushion covers,T Shirts,aprons,bags and so on and so forth.   d) Photobooks: I have chosen a photobook as a method of presentation and will therefore give a fairly detailed outline of both how to create one,and the reasons why I chose one as a presentation method. Photobooks are a  popular choice for presenting photographs these days and have probably replaced photo albums as a means of presenting a collection of photographs.A photo book is essentially fairly simple to create although you do need to be able to access the internet in order to do so. There are a host of different companies offering this service, and fierce competition between them, which means that a no frills photobook containing 30 6x4 inch images can be got for as little as a fiver. Once you have chosen which company you wish to go with,I chose CEWE which is a market leader,you can build a book either on line or by downloading free software.Having decided how you wish to proceed you can then upload the images you wish to use and you are ready to create your own photo book, or for those who, for whatever reason, would prefer not to design their own book they can simply upload images and the book will be designed for them. For the majority who choose to create their own book most, if not all, bookmaking sites will guide you through the building process while affording you full creative control over the process.You start by choosing what size and format you want your book to be. CEWE offers a range of sizes and formats starting with what they describe as a pocket book measuring 15cm x 11cm and ending with an XXL landscape book measuring 38cm x 29cm.In between there are a number of options in both landscape and portrait modes as well as squares,enough options to accommodate most.Having chosen the size and format of the book you then choose either a hard or soft cover both have options for finishes.Finally you need to decide on the quality of photographic paper you desire and the number of pages you require.Once you have settled those things you can then embark on building your book, and you have full creative control while utilising the hundreds of templates available for deciding page layout,masks and frames, background colour and clip art. I will illustrate, via a few examples, just what is possible,the images are all screen grabs taken from a mock CEWE photobook and are shown in the post that follows this. 

4 WHY I CHOSE A PHOTOBOOK AS A PRESENTATION METHOD

As mentioned earlier,I love and fully appreciate the ease in which digital images can be stored,displayed and shared with others and don't know what I would do without my computer hard drive,Google Drive, Tumblr,Slides etc as they have become part of my life as a photography enthusiast.However,for all their convenience digital images  have never, for me, really replaced the satisfaction gained from hard copy images that can be physically touched,put in an album or hung on the wall, in the same way that for me kindle can never replace the satisfaction of holding a real book.I can't explain why that is so but it is, and yet I went about 8 years capturing digital images without getting any printed until 2016 when I got an image printed for C&G Level 1 Photo Image Presentation.Following that I got a small number of other images printed to display at home on foam board and this started me thinking that I ought to seriously consider putting together an album of travel photos. I did this as a matter of course in the old days when there was no choice but to use  film and get it developed, and then  wait to see how eg. my holiday photos had turned out before putting the best ones in an album - I have dozens of albums going back thirty years. After much deliberation about which presentation method I should use for this assignment I decided that it would be a good challenge to present a series of images in hard copy. After considering the various options open to me I eventually decided that I would produce a photobook as my main presentation method.This was a new departure for me as it was the first time that I had undertaken the task. In order to fulfill the requirements of this assignment it was necessary to choose a minimum of ten images for any presentation.However,having decided to create a photobook I then decided that I would be more ambitious and create a book for posterity containing  images of places I had visited with my wife during a 12 month period spanning May 2016 to April 2017, I gave it the simple title of 'Some Places We Flew To: May 2016 - April 2017'.The finished version contains a total of 56 images on 50 pages,13 of the 22 images included in the 2 themes undertaken for C&G 311 are displayed within the book.Screen grabs of the cover and all pages of the book can be viewed in page order on my Tumblr account 'Rosefield Rocker.' Having decided on the theme I then had to decide on the size of the book,it's format and which photographic paper I would use. I was fortunate enough to be able to afford the best in terms of both size and quality and so went with that.To begin with I opted for CEWE's XXL Landscape format which allowed for A4 size images on each page,I then chose  best quality classic photographic paper for the prints,and a hard cover to encase them in. Having decided on such a large format made the page layout quite straightforward in that an A4 size image would appear on each page,it therefore came down to how I was going to frame each image,if at all,and what colour/s I would use for any frame/background.I decided that I would simply create a black border/background for all the images and insert text in a stand out white text box under each describing what the image is of. I chose black because,to my mind, black frames or borders are classic, they look great and make the image that they surround stand out without detracting from it. I have to say that over all I am happy with the photobook that I created.I am particularly impressed with the quality of materials used in making it, as the print quality and the binding of the book  is excellent,I am also happy,and relieved,that all of the images included are sharp even though they are slightly bigger than A4 prints.This was my first attempt at creating a photobook, and I am now more convinced than ever that nothing beats printed photo images,and there is no question that when you have a collection of images of personal memories and get them bound in a sturdy book it does feel special.However, I am also acutely aware that creating a bound photobook can have its downside in that once an image is included it can't be deleted in the way that digital images can be,or removed as photos can when put in an a photo album.With a photobook if there is something you decide later that you don't  like because you come to realise it is not as good as you originally thought you are stuck with it, and this is true of a small number of images contained in my photobook.The trick,I guess,is to learn from this and to try not to repeat the errors in future.Another slight niggle is that if you choose the landscape format you cannot display full size images taken in portrait mode. Despite the niggles I have become a convert and am now working on the next edition of 'Some Places We Flew To:  May 2017 to April 2018',and from then on I will probably do the same each year.
