How is your snurfer doing?
Not sure if i was supposed to look this up or just say something that entertains me but others may find tedious, but I looked it up and today I learned.

North Conway - Day 3
Sunday - 10/15
Today was mostly sunny with occasional clouds and periods of overcast. In the early evening we had periods of drizzle. The last couple of days have reminded me how unpredictable New England’s weather can be, changing quickly. I have gotten used to California weather and forgot how the weather is very different here.
When we checked into our hotel on Thursday, the receptionist asked if we wanted to schedule a time at the water park. I didn’t know what she was talking about or how it made any sense given the forecasted highs of 50s for the week. After we finished breakfast this morning, we decided we were going to find out. Turns out our hotel has an indoor water park. I didn’t know there was such a thing and it is the first time I have ever stayed in a hotel that had one. Hopefully they won’t automatically add an additional a resort fee as a result! Needless to say, we won’t be taking advantage of this amenity.

We then went and checked out the Lands End outlet store and the REI store in North Conway. Then it was back to searching for old covered bridges and fall foliage. Here are some highlights from our travels this morning.

Later we went to the grocery store to buy food for lunch and went for a three mile walk on the North Conway Recreation Path. It is a relatively new paved path specifically designed for walkers and bikers.
After lunch we went to the New England Ski Museum. They had a great 10 minute movie that had film clips of skiing in New England in 1930s and beyond.

The picture on the left below is a car from the Skimobile. The Skimobile was a unique ski lift system developed exclusively for Mount Cranmore in New Hampshire, and the design was quite different from traditional ski lifts. Each Skimobile car traveled up a raised trestle, pulled by an underside traction cable. MaryEllen used to ride one of these when she was a kid and got a chance to relive her childhood memories.
The picture on the right below is a “Snurfer,” which is a type of snowboard. The Snurfer is considered one of the early predecessors to the modern snowboard. It’s a board designed for snow, and the user holds onto a rope attached to the front while riding down a snowy slope.

We also went to a craft fair and walked the main commercial area in North Conway. Here are a couple of more interesting pumpkin decorations we saw along the way.

By chance Rich and Debby, our friends from Moraga, along with Paula and Richard, former neighbors from Moraga now residing in New York, happened to plan their vacation in North Conway the same time as us. We’d prearranged to meet, and the six of us enjoyed dinner together at Vito Marcello’s Italian Bistro.

(more…) “”

Snowboarding
Sherman Poppen is a surfer that found interest in surfing on a different medium, which, in this case, is snow. He built the first snowboard and called it the “snurfer”. The first batches of this board came out in the years 1965 to 1975. From a single board known as the “snurfer”, the snowboard developed into a “split type” at the beginning of 1991 to the early 2000s.

Q’S TOP 10 SNOWBOARDS –
q has had a lot of boards come in and out of her life, probably as much as 50 or so boards, whether it was because she needed them for competition or would need to replace one or just be gifted a bunch of them. these are her top 10, not really ranked but also sort of ranked(?) who knows.
1. ollie
this was ( meant to be ) her go-to snowboard at the olympics. she’s started using it a bit more again, but it’s still a bit of a sore spot sometimes. it is, however, the board she used in that fateful practice run and as much as the memory of her injury still gnaws at her, it’s also a reminder that she did actually make it to the olympics like she said she always would.
2. ripstick
tbh the design really reminded her of a ripstick.  also it’s probably her best board for carving.
3. boardie ( out of commission )
this was her first snowboard, and she blames her 9 year old brain for the entirely unoriginal and childish name. she’s since grown out of it, but she’s still very fond of it.
4. burt
r.i.p. burt !!  yet again, a slightly unoriginal name for a burton brand board, but it was one of her most frequently used boards because it rode really well, which is why she used it so often just for riding down the mountain. the bright yellow with a black tip look also reminds her of burt from sesame street. anyway, this is the board the wolf got it’s bite into and while it’s not split, it’s got a massive crack from the force of wolf’s bite.
5. blue
honestly this is just a bright blue snowboard. it’s one of her favorite to use for tricks. one of her extra boards she brought to the olympics.
6. smurf
ironically, not a blue one. this is a vintage snowboard called a snurfer that was gifted to her by her father when she was 13. it’s sort of a gimmick from the 60s – a monoski, ridden like a snowboard, but without any bindings ( like a skateboard or surfboard ).  she would always call it a smurfer instead of a snurfer, so she just started calling it smurf.
7. elmo
bright red snowboard, also one of her extra boards for the olympics. yes, she was going for a red, white, and blue theme.
8. johnny tsunami
yellow and red board. name is because it reminded her of the 1999 disney movie johnny tsunami, which is one of her favorite movies of all time.
9. cappie
a capita snowboard, one of her newer ones so she hasn’t really used it as much, but it rides well enough.
10. bass
she got this in her first sponsorship deal with burton, which is pretty cool. it’s an army green snowboard, also good for just riding down the mountain.

Technological ray of hope for the snowboard scene
The first boards for gliding over snow existed as early as 1900, but it was not until 1963 that American surfers brought the feeling of surfing to the snow and developed the original snowboard—the so-called snurfer. A few years later, the snowboard drew the interest of the winter sports industry, and since 1998, snowboarding has been recognized as an Olympic sport.
Chemnitz University of Technology researchers have presented an innovation from the 2020/2021 winter sports season: Together with silbaerg GmbH, a spin-off from the Institute of Lightweight Structures at Chemnitz University of Technology, they have developed a lightweight snowboard that can also be manufactured far more sustainably than comparable boards. This is made possible by a new type of textile fiber, a semi-finished product made of carbon fibers. By using the dry fiber placement process, fiber waste in snowboard production can be reduced by around 60%. "This not only saves costs, but thanks to the board's sustainable production, its carbon footprint is also significantly reduced," says Prof. Dr. Holger Cebulla, head of the Chair of Textile Technologies.

My brother just called snowboarders “snurfers”
7 notes · View notes
Note
The original name for a snowboard is "snurfer" which combines the words snow and surfer. It was invented in 1960 when Sherman Poppen put together a pair of skis for his daughters to play with.
“Shoulda kept snurfer,” Katherine says with a serious nod.
“That sounds like one of those snail memes you know?” Anna asks with a chuckle. “Like it’s a snail surfer, a snurfer.”
Katherine laughs loudly at that.
