okay so for the new armour customization, you have:
base material
accent colour/material
template
each piece of armour
there are 6 base materials (leather, iron, chain, gold, diamond, netherite). then there are 9 accent colours - though you can't use the same base material and accent material - meaning you can get 50 base and colour combos out of this.
then add in the templates. there are 12 of them (including plain, though with plain amour you don't get colour combos). this means you can make 556 different armour sets.
and then finally, you can customize the four different pieces of the armour differently, which is 556 ^ 4, which means you can make almost
ONE HUNDRED BILLION UNIQUE SETS OF ARMOUR
(specifically 95.5x10^9 unique sets of armour, which is crazy!)

thoughts on the armour trim from the 23w04a snapshot
losing my mind over the armour trim!!!!! this is the first time i've EVER explored a snapshot, i mean look how cool this is?? [mojang article]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ward helmet, Wild chestplate, Sentry pants, Rib boots just as an example! in order to get this in survival i'd have to raid an ancient city, a jungle temple, a pillager outpost, and a nether fortress. plus a bastion to get the smithing template in the first place! here's all the colour combos on netherite, posted from reddit.
Tumblr media
misc thoughts:
i really like that it encourages exploration. it's always cool to check out the world.
i don't know why rib is such a dark colour. it looks a little out of place when you try to mix n match yknow?
i LOVE that they force you to raid a bastion. makes netherite a little more late game and that much more tantalizing/valuable. awesome revamp!
the actual templates look a bit too moddy for me. i love the trim feature so much tho that it's a small price to pay and idc
i like that you can mix and match the colours and templates! lots of customization. it's hard to choose my favourite colours and designs :D i spent like an hour playing with them and couldn't pick my faves
i like that they reduced the enchantment glint. i always found it was a bit excessive and obscured the armour (especially on netherite, which has such a cool design) so this is a welcome change
we definitely need an advancement for collecting every template!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ECHO SHARD COLOURS. IMAGINE IF IT WAS ANIMATED. SCULK ON THE ARMOUR. HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE.
please mojang............. let my add trim to my tools................ do you know how often i've accidentally fortuned/silk touched the wrong block :( i'd love to be able to tell which tool is which at a glance!
trim idea: it's the same design no matter which one you select (like wild trim on a pick will look the same as the dune trim), or you can have 'tool trim' and 'weapon trim' (or maybe every tool/weapon needs a trim? so you need to find the sword trim for the sword etc) and find it in a blacksmith chest.
more trim ideas: ELYTRAS. BOWS. THE EDGES OF SHIELDS (to not obscure any banners). ARMOUR FOR HORSES (and dogs..... pls..). SADDLES. CROSSBOWS. TRIDENTS.
i'm so excited!!!!!!

Just a quick bash at looking at the proposed armor trim feature for 1.20, available in the 1.20 experimental data pack in snapshot 23w04a. Barely scratching the surface in this screenshot; check after the break for the list of trims and materials. Works on the pants, boots, and helmets too, not just the chestplates.
I likes. Especially having more uses for copper, though that amethyst looks pretty snazzy.
Java snapshot change log. Bedrock beta with trims not available at time I made this post. Announcement.
At first I was a bit worried about the proposed change to netherite upgrade process, but you can duplicate the templates with 7 diamonds, the template itself, and a block of what the template is made out of. Appears to be a shaped recipe, but it is in the crafting book.
Tumblr media
And the netherite upgrade template isn't made out of netherite -- it's made out of netherrack. Get one out of a bastion raid and make it back, and you're set. The expensive part of any template dupe is going to be the 7 diamonds.
Templates are consumed when applied, so duplicating via diamonds is something you'll likely want to do.
Possible trim materials:
Iron
Copper
Gold
Lapis
Emerald
Diamond
Netherite
Redstone
Amethyst
Quartz
Can't use the material of the armor as a trim for itself. Leather armor not getting the trim system; they've got their dye system.
Finding templates means there's more reason to explore many structures in the world. The list as of this snapshot:
Pillager Outpost - Sentry Armor Trim
Desert Pyramid - Dune Armor Trim
Shipwreck - Coast Armor Trim
Jungle Temple - Wild Armor Trim
Ocean Monument - Tide Armor Trim -- Not in a chest, chance to drop from Elder Guardian (wonder if that replaces their sponge drop? I've heard it said that was always a placeholder)
Ancient City - Ward Armor Trim
Woodland Mansion - Vex Armor Trim
Nether Fortress - Rib Armor Trim
Bastion Remnant - Snout Armor Trim
Stronghold - Eye Armor Trim
End City - Spire Armor Trim
Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates can be found randomly in all Bastion Remnant chests, and there is a guarantee of 2 in every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant

How to use smithing table in Minecraft (2023)
Introduced in Minecraft 1.14, smithing tables are intriguing blocks that allow players to upgrade their diamond gear to netherite while functioning as job site blocks for toolsmith villagers. However, these blocks will serve an expanded purpose in update 1.20. Thanks to Mojang’s release of Java Edition snapshot 23w04a, Minecraft players can now utilize smithing tables to not only upgrade diamond…

My current ranking of the armour sets (left to right):
#1: spire - I like the boots mostly, but it's decent all around
#2: tide - the pants are good, and I like the overall look, but I don't really like the helmet
#3: rib - it looks awesome when its a subtler effect so it doesn't look that great here with netherite on diamond, but i usually like it
#4: ward - decent all around, the helmets great but the chestplates weird.
#5: wild - I loveee the chestplate, but besides that it's plain
#6: eye - the helmets goofy, but the chestplate could be good depending on what youre going for.
#7: sentry - a bit plain, but the pants and boots go nice together
#8: coast - its not terrible but the design's not that good either
#9: dune - I hate the chestplate and helmet, but the boots and pants are pretty good
#10: snout - It looks like I'm cosplaying ironman. I can only imagine using this armour if I'm roleplaying the avengers
#11: plain - the classic
#12: vex - I love vexes but I hate this one. I look bisected. even though the helmet isn't split in half it still looks weird
Best in each piece:
Tumblr media
HELMET: coast
Its simple but effective
CHESTPLATE: wild
I love the triangle like shape and the shoulders
PANTS: eye
this was a hard one since I also like dune, but I like how it looks like pockets
BOOTS: spire
spire is awesome, I love the chain mail looking pattern
