Join American photographer Davin Ellicson in the Maramures region of northern Romania 12-19 April 2023 for a week of enchantment during Orthodox Easter in one of the most traditional villages left in Europe.
For decades Romania’s closed border policy under the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu as well as a natural fortress of mountains kept Maramures isolated from the rest of Europe. Even after the fall of communism change was slow to enter the region. The area is renowned for the strength of its traditions, folk costumes, idyllic landscape and is considered the heart of Romanian culture. In 2007 Romania joined the European Union and Maramures is at last changing. Come savor this rural life before it vanishes forever!
Davin is offering a seven day documentary photography workshop based in the village of Valeni where he lived for a year with a family and fell under Romania's dark spell. It is the subject of his first book coming out in 2023, designed by Dutchman Sybren Kuiper and Davin will explore his book making process for those interested. In his eighth workshop in the village, he will be sharing his passion for Romania with students. We will explore neighboring villages during Orthodox Easter week as well as attend three days of Easter ceremonies culminating with Easter Sunday on 16 April.
Davin will be working closely with workshop participants and providing daily critiques and group discussions. We will begin with a review of participants' past work. The goal of this workshop is to learn to create strong personal photographs about summer peasant life. We will shoot during the day and edit in the evenings. It’s a workshop open to amateurs and professionals alike. Technical, theoretical and aesthetic issues will be discussed as attendees work towards honing their individual visions.
Everyone will enjoy great access and homestays will allow for an immersive experience with local villagers and the opportunity to sample distinctive traditional Romanian food and 110 proof homemade plum brandy. It will be an opportunity to witness the last peasants in Europe living life as they have for millennia albeit with a few aspects of modern life mixed in! The week promises to be an intense, intimate and unforgettable experience where students will get to know the villagers first hand and live a romantic way of life forgotten in the rest of Europe more than a century ago.
It is an all digital workshop limited to 6 students and everyone should come with their own laptop and editing software. Knowledge of your digital SLR or rangefinder and workflow is essential.
DATES: 12-19 April 2023.
WORKSHOP LOCATION: Valeni, Maramures, Romania Homestays and all meals are included. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to Romania and up to Maramures although the option is available on a first come first served basis for three students to accompany Davin from Bucharest and back by SUV for an additional cost which includes food and accommodation one night each way in a restored Saxon house in Transylvania. A few airlines now fly from western Europe to the cities of Bucharest, Cluj and Satu Mare from where there are daily trains to the city of Baia Mare in Maramures.
REGISTRATION: The workshop is open to any professional or committed amateur who has knowledge of digital cameras and editing software. Participants must come with their own camera, laptop and editing software. All ages welcome!

ABOUT: Photographer Davin Ellicson, American, born 1978, works from Bucharest, Romania. His first major project was "Țăran" about the period during which he lived and farmed with a peasant family in the remote Maramures region of northern Romania. Davin went for a year without running water, drinking milk straight from the cow while photographing Romanians' fidelity to the earth and folk traditions that he knew were about to vanish. It is the subject of his first book coming out in 2023, designed by Dutchman Sybren Kuiper and with a text by Romanian/American writer and poet Andrei Codrescu. A psychological portrait of the city of Bucharest comprises the second part of Davin's trilogy of photographic works about Romania. Currently, he is working on the final volume, “The Dacia Project”, a retrospective journey around the country by car in both a 2002 Dacia 1310 (a rebadged 1970s Renault 12 and a symbol of Ceausescu's Romania) as well as Dacia's latest 4x4 SUV, the Duster. Davin's work has appeared in The New York Times, Le Monde M, The Guardian and The Official Ferrari Magazine among others. Awards include two grants from The Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest.

Film Review: Kodak Ultramax 400
Remember Wall’s Paddle Pop Trico Ice Cream?
I distinctly remember during my childhood days, while other kids were crazy over Wall’s Paddle Pop Rainbow, I was a sucker for Trico. It was my instant pick from the local shop every time I tagged along my parents when they went for groceries.
Yep. That’s how I see Kodak Ultramax.
As a 400 ISO film, produced by Kodak, most of the time Ultramax was overlooked because of another line of Kodak’s 400 ISO film, Portra 400. We all know how film photographers worship Portra so much, but as a part of professional film line, we cannot bat an eye on how costly it is, although, the price does come with a godlike quality film photographers starved upon.
Being a consumer-grade film, with 400 ISO giving it a wider versatility, and the fact that it is found abundantly in e-commerce, I was a total sucker for Ultramax, and here’s why.

Two words that stands out on Kodak Ultramax: sharp. vivid.
I have used this film in a variety of cameras - from pocket cameras to rangefinder and SLRs, and I must say: This film is insanely sharp.
Taking Ultramax for street photography under sufficient amount of light, on high aperture lens, results in really breathtaking photos. It has strong saturation, medium contrast, and renders the colors red and blue in a way that it almost gives off a punchy right-in-your-face, especially when you rate it at box speed.
Given its high ISO, it is more versatile and handles low light pretty well.

Now, another thing worthy to take note of: its dynamic range. Needless to say, when exposed properly, with just the right amount of light, the dynamic range of this film is surprising.
Leica Mini 3 (Summar Lens) - Noritsu Lab Scan (Soup n Film, Jakarta). It was merely a pocket sized camera, yet it produced such impeccable shades of the clouds in the sky.
Voigtlander Bessa R - Canon LTM 50/1.8. Frontier scan (Seni Abadi, Bandung). Look at the beautiful, breathtaking sunbeam.
Taking Ultramax for a morning stroll or golden-hour photowalk, given its warm characteristic, results in a more pronounced yellow. This should be taken into consideration especially when you’re taking portrait photos during those hours.
When used on a overcast day, the colors falls flat and the shadow area appears muddy. I tend to overexpose my films, rating 400 ISO at 200 and sometimes at 100, etc. However, I found myself struggling with the exposure latitude of Ultramax,
Another thing worth noting is that, under harsh light, this film struggles a bit as the highlight would easily blown out.

How do I feel about Kodak Ultramax?
It’s kinda hard to tell. Personally, this is a film that I really loved, since it was one of the first films I used during my very early days of film photography. Generally speaking, the results are great. However, even with a whole bunch of rolls I’ve spent with Ultramax, I’m still struggling with the idea of when is the perfect time to use Ultramax?
Some say it’s perfect for street photography, some say it’s an all-rounder film, ready for the get-go. But I’m not really sure if Ultramax falls under any particular category. It is a versatile film, readily available as well.
I used to LOVE this film so much, but if I have the choice, I would go with Xtra 400. Regardless, if there’s only Ultramax available in my fridge, I would still go out on photowalks with an Ultramax.
And that, is how I see my good old friend Trico. My friends would reminisce the times they had with that sick looking Paddle Pop Rainbow, but my childhood days were always Trico. Now that we’re adults (DAMN), they’ve outgrown Paddle Pop but I could never walk away from Trico.
However, if my parents called, I’d definitely ask for Cornetto.
What would be the equivalent of Paddle Pop Rainbow in film stock universe, you ask?
Probably the Agfa Vista.
I don’t know why I’m talking about ice creams.
Verdict:
In Indonesia, as of December 2020, Kodak Ultramax 400 is readily available in IDR115.000 - 130.000.
Having similar price range and ISO with Fujifilm’s consumer grade Xtra 400, we can’t help not to compare these two. The film grain is less apparent compared to Xtra 400, with impeccable sharpness, punchy contrast and saturated colors. As expected from a Kodak manufacturer, the warm tones of this film is definitely its signature look. Definitely an all-rounder film stock!

The D5 is extraordinary because its Auto W Balance works great in any light, giving great-looking results even under modern mixes of awful artificial fluorescent and energy-saving lighting. Its Auto White Balance the best I've used, along with its little sister the D500.
The D5 has by far the best high ISO performance I've ever used. It really does work great at ISO 102,400. Nikon is lying about the Hi+5 (ISO 3,276,800) setting, which gives nothing but useless garbage, but up to ISO 102,400 you can sell the images and no one is going to notice anything lacking.
Put these things together and no other camera matches the D5's ability to shoot anything, anywhere, in any light. It's the king of low light, and the king of action. It's sort of like what the US Marine snipers tell their targets: you can run, but you'll just die tired. If you want to shoot it, the D5 will get it, and it will be sharp and colourful as well.
Nikon always says that their new cameras are awesome, and it's usually just the same old thing with a new feature or two. With the D5's genuinely new AF system and Auto WB performance, along with ultra-high ISOs and 10-20% higher frame rate than the old D4 and D4s, the D5 really does let us shoot more better, which gives pro shooters significant competitive advantages.

History of Photography
Photography on average is less than 200 years old. The first "cameras" were used to study optics rather than to create images. A French scientist by the name of Joseph Nicephore Niepce developed the first photographic image using a camera obscura in 1827. I n 1839, another Frenchman by the name of Louis Daguerrewas also experimenting with ways to capture an image, where after trying for many years he was finally able to develop a more convenient and effective method of photography where he was able to reduce exposure time to less than 30 minutes and keep the image from disappearing afterward. In 1851, Frederick Scoff Archer, an English sculptor, invented the wet-plate negative. In 1856 by the American scientist Hamilton Smith, used iron instead of copper to make a positive image. In 1889, photographer and industrialist George Eastman invented film with a base that was flexible and could be rolled. Traditionally, linen rag papers were used as the base for making photographic prints. The idea was to use normal linen fiber-base paper and coat it with a plastic material that would make the paper water-resistant. Kodachrome was the first color film to produce prints that could last half a century. Instant photography was invented by Edwin Herbert Land, an American inventor and physicist. George Eastman not only invented roll film, but he also invented the box-shaped camera that was simple enough for consumers to use. By 2004, digital cameras were outselling film cameras, and digital is now dominant.

Many innovators have brought photography to where it is today. Photography has gone from just professionals doing it, to the whole world being able to do it. Photography has changed dramatically and has improved over time.
The first "cameras" were used to study optics rather than to create images. Ibn Al-Haytham, an Arab scholar, is credited as being the first person to study how we see. He invented the camera obscura, which is the precursor to the pinhole camera. It demonstrated how light could be used to project an image onto a flat surface. By the mid-1600s, artists were using the camera obscura to help them draw and paint elaborate real-world images (Bellis).
A French scientist by the name of Joseph Nicephore Niepce developed the first photographic image using a camera obscura in 1827. He would place an engraving onto a metal plate coated in bitumen and then exposed it to light. Gradually an image would appear once Niepce would place the metal plate in a solvent. However, Niepce's process required eight hours of light exposure to create an image that which would soon fade away. In 1839, another Frenchman by the name of Louis Daguerrewas also experimenting with ways to capture an image, where after trying for many years he was finally able to develop a more convenient and effective method of photography where he was able to reduce exposure time to less than 30 minutes and keep the image from disappearing afterward. He called it the daguerreotype process (Explore the Major Advances). The drawback to daguerreotypes is that the images could not be reproduced. The ability to create multiple prints came about thanks to the work of Henry Fox Talbot, an English botanist, mathematician and a contemporary of Daguerre. In 1841, he perfected the paper-negative process and called it a calotype, Greek for "beautiful picture."
In 1851, Frederick Scoff Archer, an English sculptor, invented the wet-plate negative. Using a viscous solution of collodion, he coated glass with light-sensitive silver salts. This wet plate created a more stable and detailed negative than the paper negative. In 1856 by the American scientist Hamilton Smith, used iron instead of copper to make a positive image. All these processes had to be developed quickly before the emulsion dried. This meant carrying along a portable darkroom full of toxic chemicals in fragile glass bottles. This all changed in 1879 when the dry plate was created. Like wet-plate photography, this process used a glass negative plate to capture an image, but now photographers would no longer need portable darkrooms. Photographers could instead hire technicians to develop their photographs, days or months after the images had been shot (Bellis).
In 1889, photographer and industrialist George Eastman invented film with a base that was flexible and could be rolled. The drawback to nitrate-based film was that it was flammable and tended to decay over time. Around 1920, Kodak and other manufacturers began switching to a celluloid base, which was fireproof and more durable. Triacetate film was later made and was even more stable and flexible as well as fireproof. In the early 1940s, commercially viable color films were brought to the market by Kodak and other film companies. These films used the modern technology of dye-coupled colors in which a chemical process connects the three dye layers together to create an apparent color image (Explore the Major Advances).
Traditionally, linen rag papers were used as the base for making photographic prints. Prints on this fiber-based paper coated with a gelatin emulsion were quite stable when properly processed. The paper would most likely dry out and crack under poor archival conditions. The image could also be ruined due to high humidity or from contaminants in the water that were used for processing. The next innovation in photographic papers was resin-coating and water-resistant paper. The idea was to use normal linen fiber-base paper and coat it with a plastic material that would make the paper water-resistant. Kodachrome was the first color film to produce prints that could last half a century. Now, new techniques are creating permanent color prints that last 200 years or more. New printing methods using computer-generated digital images and highly stable pigments offer permanency for color photographs (Bellis).
A camera is a lightproof object with a lens that captures incoming light and directs the light and resulting image toward film or the imaging device. The most popular cameras using the daguerreotype process utilized a sliding-box design. The lens was placed in the front box. A second, slightly smaller box slid into the back of the larger box. The focus was controlled by sliding the rear box forward or backward. A laterally reversed image would be obtained unless the camera was fitted with a mirror or prism to correct this effect. When the sensitized plate was placed in the camera, the lens cap would be removed to start the exposure.
Instant photography was invented by Edwin Herbert Land, an American inventor and physicist. In 1948, he revealed his first instant-film camera, the Land Camera 95. Over the next several decades, Land's Polaroid Corporation would refine black-and-white film and cameras that were fast, cheap, and remarkably sophisticated. Polaroid introduced color film in 1963 and created the iconic SX-70 folding camera in 1972.
George Eastman not only invented roll film, but he also invented the box-shaped camera that was simple enough for consumers to use. Once the film was used up in the camera, it could be mailed with the film still in it to the Kodak factory, where the film was removed from the camera, processed, and printed. The camera was then reloaded with film and returned.
In 1975, engineers at Kodak developed the very first camera creating a digital image. It used a cassette recorder to store data and took more than 20 seconds to capture a photo. In 1990, the first digital camera called the Dycam Model 1 sold in the U.S for $600. The first digital SLR, a Nikon F3 body attached to a separate storage unit made by Kodak, appeared the following year. By 2004, digital cameras were outselling film cameras, and digital is now dominant (Bellis).
Photography has changed dramatically and has improved over time. Without photography it would have set back technology a lot. It has gone from being complex and limited, to simple and wide spread. Now days, we cannot go a single day without seeing photography being used in our everyday lives. Photography not only has its own history, but is has helped us record the worlds history for over one-hundred years.

She is tangruixue, a 2020 graduate student majoring in journalism at the school of film and television media, Shanghai Normal University.
March 5 is the day before the first round of material delivery in Tinghui community. At that time, Tang Xiaoyan, Secretary of the neighborhood committee, expected to leave some marks on the staff and volunteers who silently contributed to the community epidemic prevention and control work, so he "casually" asked among the more than 200 volunteers, "is there any volunteer who signed up for the publicity group?" My first film camera! I got this FracturedFox disposable in an order I placed for their film zine months ago as a freebie. It sat for a while until this year started and I made the commitment to shoot film.
The specs (lol) are 400 iso film, flash, and plastic everything.
I have ran through 20 of the 27 exposures so far. I feel like this is a potentially important note: I am not one of these hipsters looking to take 6000 photos of the corner of a building (not that that’s a bad thing honestly I would buy that zine) so I really only take pictures of significant or interesting things to me, and I got almost all of these 20 photos hanging out working on my friends skyline. I just bring attention to this to say, don’t expect to run through a roll of film every day you go and shoot. Sometimes you just get caught in the moment and forget. I have also heard this is a great excuse to have multiple cameras if you shoot at both day and night (200 in the day SLR and 800 in the night SLR, lol). I don’t expect magical images out of this camera of course, but I think it should be interesting to see what comes of it. It certainly made it easy to just start taking flicks without thinking. I will absolutely update when I finish this roll and get scans back. Although this brings up a concern I have that I will definitely have to make a post about...

Maybe if it was a Walgreens Kodak and I was just gonna have Walgreens develop the pictures and accept the horrid quality I wouldn’t worry? But that is not the situation I am in.

Should you get a disposable as your first film camera?
It seems to be a common practice for those who know nothing to just pick one of these up and run with it, hell that’s what I did. However, I do not think that this should be the route someone who cares about getting into film should take. Nowadays disposable pricing is around 20$ on amazon, to 30$ at Walgreens and anywhere in between and beyond. This is abysmal value. The wonderland of eBay houses many cheap point and shoots for under 10$ shipped, I have personally picked up a couple. A cheap “Buy it Now” point and shoot, a roll or two of cheap film on B&H, and you are in with a better camera and more film to shoot with. I also believe that forcing yourself to learn to properly load film and otherwise operate a film camera is going to give you a better idea of what some of the quirks are in shooting film, as life will never be as easy as a disposable. You will also not have to worry about doing special nonsense to get your film developed, it’ll be just like anything else.

The Canon AE-1
This is the Canon AE-1, a stereotypical looking black and silver 35mm camera. Now, if this is your first 35mm camera, this might not be the one for you. This camera is best suited for an intermediate photographer who wants to start taking more control of their 35mm exposures. Unlike most point and shoot cameras that the average person would be familiar with, The Canon AE-1 is a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. Basically, meaning it is meant for use with interchangeable lenses. Upgrading to an SLR film camera from a point and shoot one opens you up to whole new world of possibility. SLR cameras usually allow you to adjust the ISO as well as Shutter speed, which most point and shoots don’t allow you to do. Not only can you adjust the quality and aesthetic of your photos by using different lenses, but you can also have longer exposures for lower light, motion blur, and under and over exposing options with shutter speed. SLR cameras also usually have a self-timer which allows you to take a photo of yourself, or just have the shutter release automatically. It is battery powered and supports either manual or automatic exposure. A Canon AE-1 will run you about 200$ nowadays, which is not super expensive for a high-end vintage camera. Most models that you'll be able to find online or in secondhand stores will be easily repairable and cheaply able to create beautiful 35mm exposures. Gaining the extra control over your photos that this camera offers will be eye opening for anyone interested in 35mm photography. Not only does it take great photos, but the design of this camera has inspired many others to come after it. First released in April 1976, the Canon AE-1 is a magnificent looking camera. It comes in the silver and black colorway as well as an all-black colorway. The 1970s and 80s consisted of intense competition with companies such as Minolta, Pentax, Olympus and Nikon. These companies have used similar designs on their cameras, because the design is timeless! It’s a great looking camera. Because of this camera’s electronic infrastructure, the Canon AE-1 was greatly differentiated from most other cameras of its era, most of which were completely mechanical. it also opened opportunities for some new ground to be covered in the field of camera accessories. The Canon AE-1 is compatible with motorized film winder, which replaced the burden of having to advance the film lever every time you take a picture. It is also compatible with a multitude of flashes and filters. Many people who took photography classes in the 1970s and 80s were instructed using Canon AE-1s. Its simple controls, convenient size, and exceptional photo quality were perfect for newcomers to photography.
These photos showcase what the AE-1 is capable of with black and white film. The whites pop out from the shadowy black, however the details aren’t lost in the shadows. The darker areas don’t appear muddy, or out of focus.
These photos using color film show how diverse the AE-1 can be with different film stocks and lighting scenarios. The contrast between the shadows and the light on this brightly colored building is outstanding. And the blue walls and water surrounding this dog, cause him to pop out so much more. What also stands out is his red collar, the AE-1 captures the bright red of his collar while simultaneously capturing the faint green of his worn tennis ball.
