Ok thank god bc I was about to ask you more about this AU 😂
The ghost fic is actually a different fic (it's more like Ghost Adventures, Ghost Files, etc.)!! But I'm feeling silly so I'll talk more about this au anyway 🫶
• Johnny was born into a family of vampire hunters. Not every family/group of hunters has a focus on one specific monster, but Johnny’s does. It's a personal vendetta.
• Bouncing off of the last one I think that Nitara would be a huge blow to everything that Johnny knew growing up about vampires. She's not nice per se, but she isn't the mindless and violent being that he had been taught to kill.
• Kenshi wasn't born into hunting like Johnny, but he was always aware of it. A group of rogue hunters protected his family hundreds of years ago and their descendants continue to do so, but in exchange ask for money, weapons, housing, etc.
• The Lin Kuei boys in this one are also hunters, and I like to think that Tomas was picked up after a monster killed his family. He was taken in after it was killed. The Lin Kuei are still the Lin Kuei, but they also hunt monsters
• Johnny and Kenshi met, surprisingly, not on a hunt. By chance, they ended up in the same antique store in the middle of nowhere. They bonded over some old items, and Johnny happened to mention Sento, an ancient sword said to be able to slay any monster. Immediately Kenshi is interested because that's his family sword and "What the hell does this guy know about it?"
• Continuing from the last one, they teamed up to fight some werewolf that had made its presence known. Either Johnny or Kenshi get injured (unused to hunting with a partner) and suddenly Johnny suggests that they start working together more often. Kenshi says no, but then Johnny says that he'd help him track down Sento. Kenshi agrees.
• Johnny still goes by Cage in this AU, but it's less of a stage name and more for protection than anything. His mother was a badass vampire hunter and people knew her name, so it was all around easier to come up with a new one.
• Kenshi is the most efficient at killing monsters, but will use the same weapon until it breaks if Johnny lets him. For this reason, Johnny has a whole arsenal to split between them.
• Johnny is in charge of handling witnesses and gathering info/researching when he isn't fighting. Kenshi is in charge of finding places to sleep and contacting other hunters.
• Mileena in this AU is a monster, but she was cursed to be one rather than born. She travels with Tanya, Baraka, and Syzoth. Ashrah comes and goes, but she hunts demons and has her own personal mission.
• Sindel has a coven that she's the Supreme Witch of, and Kitana stays with her to learn magic.
• After a hunt, there's always a debrief. It's like an unspoken rule between all hunters. No matter who you're with, or what your relationship is, you take care of your own. Johnny is the one to push for this the most when they're all together, and is typically the first one up and gathering medical supplies.
• Kung Lao and Raiden are married, and have been training to be hunters since they were young. They focus on spirit extermination and demons, but Kung Lao has an affinity for shapeshifters. He likes the challenge. Raiden still has his amulet, and it was given to him by Liu Kang.
• Liu Kang is the same in this universe. He's just also kind of the network control center and hunters come to him for advice or guidance. He only hunts if the threat is big enough, but he's more than happy to help.

Hello! (^-^) I saw your post in which you said that you would be happy to talk about pre-MK1(2) Raiden, and so I have to ask: Would you be so kind to share your headkanons about Lord Raiden?👉👈
So my HCs for raiden mostly have to do with a backstory/lore addition thingy ideas for a story. Its all in my head and not written down concretely so it may be a mess.
Raiden as a young god was fierce, and scary to anyone who gained his ire. Luckily he was pretty reclusive and traveled slowly. His brother fujin, on the other hand, was more likely to interact with mortals and cause mischief. Contrary to what mortal kombat set up, Although young god fujin interacted with mortals more, it was only for his own amusement.
Raiden was dragged into helping mortals by his other fellow shinto pantheon when the elder gods contacted them. Raiden's first interaction with a mortal was in mortal kombat as a demonstration from shinnok (who at the time wasn't fully evil/did evil things) and raiden lost due to his own arrogance. The mortal was a middle aged woman who was exceptionally skilled with a bo staff, she inspired raiden to fight mostly with a staff and prefer it to any other weapon. She was his first unofficially trained warrior, although she was trained by inari first in preperation to fight against raiden.
So raiden has a fondness for older women, but women warriors in general. Needless to say this mysterious milf left quite the impression on raiden (did he fall in love with her? Thats a question lost to time)
Raiden's second humbling moment came from bo rai cho, as raiden was ment to travel earthrealm and meet the mortal masters who would train warriors to participate in the very first mortal kombat earthrealm would face. Raiden and bo rai cho first met at a tavern, got wasted, raiden was mad and fought bo rai cho for putting him through all these hijinks, and then lost bc bo rai cho kicked his ass with drunken style. And ever since then, the thunder god and drunken immortal were best friends.
In the very first tournament to defend earthrealm, they lost the first rounds badly. And raiden firsthand felt the taste of what mortal kombat brought. But in the final rounds one of his warriors saved the first tournament and became the first mortal kombat champion of earthrealm. Shang tsung.
But shang tsung had many personal problems that raiden could not understand as a god, and due to miscommunication and mishandling of emotions, along with dealing with the aftermath of shinnoks betrayal and slaying of many of his fellow gods. raiden drived a wedge between him and shang tsung. And that would cost earthrealm dearly in more ways than one. For shang tsung brought them their first victory, and their first betrayal and defeat.
Raiden learned from his mistakes and trained the great kung lao, became more sympathetic with mortality and his training less harsh. But Although the great kung lao defended earthrealm greatly, alas he was unprepared for greater threats of outworld. Great kung Lao was ultimately no match for prince goro.
Bitter defeat after bitter defeat, raiden was desperate for warriors. And ultimately when the turning of the modern ages came, raiden yet still, saw hope. In three young boys, liu kang, chan kang, and kung lao descendant of the great kung lao. Either one of them held potential to be the new mortal kombat champion, the protector of earthrealm. But so did many a warrior before them...
Raiden at this point in the time became more like what we see in the 95 movie or defenders or the realm. Wise, stubborn, a bit cheeky, but hopeful.
But enough about story, time for more personal hc! (Put under read more for convenience)
Raiden hates coffee and loves tea, will playfully give you shit for drinking coffee.
Kid thunder is actually raiju, the thunder beast that is raiden's furry companion. He had transformed into a youthful miniature version of him in recent years, raiden does not know why they do that. Johnny cage had given raiju's nickname out of misunderstanding that the thunder beast is blood related to raiden. Raiden is confused but accepts this.
Bo rai cho is actually not really from outworld and is from earthrealm. But he disclosed both times that fact while drunk, only raiden knows the truth. Raiden does not disclose the truth because he thinks it's amusing to see people guessing.
Raiden adores spicy foods, almost to intolerable degrees. He remains completely unaffected by the spice. It unnerves even his brother, fujin. His favorite food is spicy chicken karaage, which is basically fried chicken.
Raiden does not care about sexuality nor gender, he's a god and his true form is condensed electricity in the form of an oni-like being. But he's definitely masculine above all else.
Raiden is of yang (order, light) orientation but in a destructive manner. Fujin, his brother, is yin (chaos, dark) and opposite of him. But they love each other and have a strong brotherly bond. When fujin arrives, his brother is not far behind. Hence why fujin was depressed to be left guarding the sky temple alone while raiden trained warriors to protect earthrealm from mortal kombat, but fujin does not tell a single soul this fact.
Raiden and fujin are the only gods left in earthrealm. The other gods have not yet reincarnated, and several gods in other realms are unknown or dead and also awaiting reincarnation.
Raiden used to admire cetrion before she eventually lost his trust as well as the rest of the elder Gods.
Raiden has a complicated relationship with all of the ninjas, to varying degrees amongst each one. Raiden keeps his opinions about them to himself, lest he accidentally inact Mortal kombat...
Raiden adores children and protects them especially fiercely. Tries to make them feel comfortable and protected.
Raiden likes taking long hot baths.
Raiden does not like asserting his divine authority when unnecessary. Over the centuries he's learned that divinity is overrated, but he cannot help feel some satisfaction when using his power towards those that earned it. Good or bad.
Raiden has a strong bloodlust connected to his nature to destroy with light. It took many years to repress and hone this, only failing when shinnok's influence brought out those traits. Raiden has once told fujin that if he ever were to fall down such a path again, if it threatened earthrealm, to kill him. Without hesitation.
Raiden's hatred of shang tsung is not only out of resentment for betrayal, but of guilt from causing shang tsung down such a path. Raiden regrets and represses, shang tsung has forgotten the exact reason why he resents raiden in such a personal way beyond foiling his ambitions.
Raiden hates walking around when he can teleport. Raiden is lazy in certain areas.
Raiden has a dry sense of humor, as well as crude Although he tries to be appropriate.
Raiden sees kung lao as much a son as liu kang, and sonya and Johnny as well.
Raiden hates anything even remotely related to the nether realm, which makes his relationship with hanzo hasashi as an ally very... interesting.
Raiden wears a headwrap to not only hold his hair back in practical komabt use, but because he is lazy to tie it up in another style.

Examining MK1: And the Rest
Earthrealm and Outworld bear the brunt of the characters in this game, but there's a smattering of outsiders running about the twin realms as well.
Ashrah
What a surprise it was to see Ashrah here. Between MK1 and Cage Match, they seem to be pushing Ashrah pretty hard right now. That's nice of them; She's a cool character. Netherrealm demon blessed by a sacred sword, allowing her to slay demons to purify her soul. It's a neat concept.
As an ex-member of the Brotherhood of Shadow, she also has potential to examine this particular corner of the MK-verse. One controlled by Quan Chi, occupied also by Noob Saibot and Sareena, but rarely dwelt on.
MK1 doesn't dwell much on it either. Ashrah shows up, explains her backstory, fights Quan Chi, and then leaves the plot. It's not much, and feels like it's only here to justify adding her to the roster. But as a character entirely snubbed from the first reboot, it's more than she's had in many long years.
Geras
Geras is a dedicated guardian of time, here to do all the Time Keeper stuff while Liu Kang gets to fart around as Protector. Divorcing Kang from the Time Keeper role and leaving it mostly in Geras's hands was a good choice.
I like Geras, but I also wouldn't mind if he took the Hourglass and left. We need to start bringing down the stakes somehow; This shit is already out of control. Giving the protags limitless omniscience and even a degree of control over all of time and space is a big part of why it's out of control.
The Hourglass makes Liu Kang too powerful, such that the kind of multiversal timeline-hopping threats that drag down the end of the game became necessary. Shifting it over to Geras only shifts that burden. Passing it right back to Kang at the end, even moreso.
If there's a way to scale back from the Hourglass while keeping Geras, I'm all for it. But as it stands, he's the living embodiment of the out-of-control threat escalation bubble that Mortal Kombat currently finds itself in.
Havik
Speaking of characters getting a big push recently, we have Havik. Returning in an MKX comic, then making his video game re-debut in MK1.
Chaosrealm's been culled from the lore for the sake of simplicity, turning Havik into a Seidan terrorist revolutionary instead. Which is typically Darrius's role. But he's not Darrius. He's inexplicably Dairou? But he's doing Darrius's shtick, which is why he has Darrius as his Plus One. They consolidated every Seidan character that isn't Hotaru into Havik.
Havik is the villain who most feels like he's along for the ride. He's here for the sake of having Havik in the game. He's rarely focused on, while his non-regenerative but unique fleshy-weird abilities get zero explanation whatsoever.
Like Ashrah, Havik's role in the game seems to be to assure audiences that the 3-D Era characters aren't forgotten, rather than having anything that the story wants him to actively contribute.
Also in that boat is....
Nitara
While several characters took a heroic turn with MK1, Nitara took a turn for the wicked. As a vampire, there was always a necessary darkness to her character. But ultimately, her ambition was to free her people from Outworld's enslavement, and to protect them from being slaughtered by Ashrah. In a sense, she was a heroic figure - albeit a hero of vampires. It's complicated.
The new Nitara is still a hero of vampires. She seeks a way to solve a food shortage among her people, which she ultimately does by instituting livestock programs. Horrifying livestock programs. But. Y'know. Vampires.
But she's mainly here as a punching bag for the heroes. She allied with Quan Chi because she thought he could solve her problems. When he doesn't, she goes off and solves them herself.
She shares the problem that plagues Havik and Ashrah: These third-party characters are individually interesting, but are contextually so divorced from the events and characters and places driving the plot that there's not much they can bring to the table.
Quan Chi
Quan Chi's problems are two-fold, suffering separately from a problem plaguing the Earthrealmers and one plaguing the Outworlders.
First, the problem of slavish devotion to reference. Quan Chi isn't here for any reasons that pertain to him as a character. He's here because he needs to be here, to fulfill all of the Deadly Alliance references that the game wants to make.
This is especially true of Titan Quan Chi - A character who stands with Titan Shang Tsung at the height of the ultimate conflict but who, and I cannot stress this enough, has not been present in this story until this point.
Titan Tsung went out and got an army of Titans, and decided to keep one of the Quan Chis to himself purely for the sake of Deadly Alliance nostalgia. Titan Quan Chi is Shang Tsung's purse.
The other issue is that Chains of Iconicity thing acting up again. One of the spirits from his Soulnado generator breaks free and, uh, bleaches his skin white. That's it. It wanted his skin to be white, because it's supposed to be white. The ghost wasn't after vengeance or anything; it was just bothered because he didn't look right.
Uh. Okay. Cool? Have a nice afterlife, vengeful spirit of a canon purist.
It's a funny reversal from the way the original series tried to treat Quan Chi as the newer, better, cooler, all-around more awesome Shang Tsung. We've gone from that to Shang Tsung dragging Quan Chi around by the ear for the sake of nostalgic aesthetic.

My live reaction to this mk1 story expansion leak ignore I’m one month late my dumb ass didn’t think there was a reddit for leaks
Disclaimer: potential spoilers ofc, I’m aware this might be not completely accurate to the future story expansion this is just for funnsies don’t take me too seriously also I’m new here pls have mercy
while reading this whole thing I felt like the “we are so back, it’s so over” meme it was a roller coaster my god
Midway reading this I felt a headache coming idk why I thought the reboot meant the story line would get less crazy I clearly misjudged by A LOT
But don’t get me wrong I was loving it lowkey
We are getting the lin kuei bots I think and I’m kinda excited for that
Anyways, I’m so excited about getting to see kuai and harumi’s wedding omg <3 and apparently everyone from the crew is going (or almost everyone)
I hope we get to see Hanzo
Harumi is going to appear in the story line and we might see her kick some ass hell yeah
Whoever is the person who betrayed the Shirai Ryu I’m coming for your ass
Anyways, wedding is ruined 💔 it became a war zone 💔

The fact that WW2 Johnny apparently plays an important role in the story expansion it still so funny to me because it’s just so random
What’s also so random is his team up with scorpion I wonder how is their dynamic
I’m going on a tangent for WW2 Johnny but the potential for angst of him it’s so big like what if he wanted to be an actor but was forced into the military to help with the war, him feeling jealousy of his counterpart who did get to be an actor..

Final thoughts: that’s crazy. If they change everything I would be ok as long as we still get wedding and ww2 Johnny (IM HOPING FOR THAT MONTAGE) anyways spare the awful grammar it’s 2am.

initial thoughts after my first MK1 playthrough:
(disclaimer that i didn't actually play the game, i watched a full no commentary playthrough on youtube!!)
i fucking love this game so much holllly SHIT- expect sosososo much MK1 posting from now on. i will be on brainrot for a WHILE.
i have so many thoughts and observations and feelings, from the story to the characters to the gameplay.

MILEENA:

CANON LESBIAN I LOVE IT SO MUCH
so very badass. slays so hard
she's the kind of character i just love on instinct. i have no words about her. just so much love
SHANG TSUNG:
i hated him at first but his flamboyant and unintentionally silly ways entranced me
my only note is that he would look so much better covered in blood and dirt and slightly beat up. i would pay to see that.
he is so silly and flamboyant that i cannot take him seriously. he's the kind of guy i hold like a disobedient kitten and show you and say "look at my dog"
LIU KANG:
no notes. phenomenal
the type of character i would show you and say "this is my favorite. he is very sweet and well-behaved."
just a good guy. i want him to be my uncle. he has very good uncle vibes for some reason.
QUAN CHI:
ugly as shit. next question
how did sindel fall for this guy he's like. a carbon copy of those evil timeline destroying monks in dr strange. the two are no different.
not even silly to make up for being criminally ugly. can't believe this.
BI-HAN
i knew he was fake from the beginning. just saying.
RAIDEN
beautiful sweet country boy. perfect in every way. no notes. next.
my thoughts on the story and worldbuilding:
this game absolutely blew me away with the level of detail and intricacies- i've never been so immersed in a game before. it really felt like i was brought into the story right next to the characters, and everything felt real and tangible in so many ways. outworld felt like a real, tangible place i could visit if i wanted to, thanks to the careful additions and placement of every last piece of detail, down to the costumes and cultures and worlds.
i loved the political world-building we got throughout the whole thing, down to the cultures, the peoples, their biases, their afflictions. the virus, the conflicts behind the scenes, everything- it was so fucking cool.
so many of the twists i did NOT see coming, i think because of the incredibly careful world-building- we never got clear, obvious exposition. it all came through the story itself, the beats and events, and that was sosososo fucking cool. i., ksdjgfkajshgef
the gameplay:
the story and the gameplay just blend/lead right into each other seamlessly, and it's so. LK:JEFG HLQW$UG ITS SO FUCKING COOL.
the fact that all the characters connected to sindel had similar movesets and animations, showing how they clearly learned from each other, there's a clear connection there.
there was also some connection i didn't quite understand between a bunch of characters who had this one move where they. barf blood on your face?? which was baffling but also, despite me not fulling understanding WHAT connection there is, i know there is one, which is what's important.
there are a LOT of instances of this in the game, where characters with connections to each other will show it in how they fight. it's so fucking cool to me and such. KLJG FLQ FKLJGQW ITS SO COOOOOL KJGF ARGGGHHGHG

Honestly I haven't thought about it tooo much but I have sort of an idea. (thank you for showing interest btw!)
His powers are a wip, but I think it would be something like forming jade weapons(with the marbles he has) or turning things into jade? something like that
He's on the younger side and he's a monk (If you couldn't tell) and a very grumpy one at that. He has a temper and is rather impulsive but at the end of the day will listen to Liu Kang. (I imagen him and Hanzo would get along if they were to meet)
Liu Kang is kind of like a mentor to him but being caught up with god stuff means they don't get to bond as much as he'd like.
As for his childhood he doesn't know much, only that his older brother left him at the monks door step and left without a trace. (the only possession he has from him being a scarf)
Some time passes, He feels unfulfilled being a monk and finds himself unable to use his powers to their full potential, and Liu Kang advises him to travel to outworld to find himself, and maybe his brother.
I think it would be cool if at some point in his travels he looses an eye and replaces it with a jade one instead, though he mostly goes around slaying monsters and helping small villages- maybe he meets the Shirai Ryu and joins them at some point?
Though who knows what's in store for his future? hopefully nothing too painful! >:3c
Just ignore him, he's a little grumpy because I told you :3
