Yay!! another Taifu no Myobu appreciatior! I love her, for such a relatively minor character she has a ton of charisma and it's hilarious to see her sass Genji back.

TAIFU NO MYOBU MY BELOVED!!!!! you’re so right about her charisma—it’s honestly a joy to see a character like her in the refined milieu of heian society, particularly considering its restrictive standards for women. and it’s doubly wonderful to see somebody talking back to genji 🤭

#I JUST LOVE HER #her sections also make me a little bit sad sometimes when i reread them #because it makes me think about how few genuine no-strings-attached friendships genji has in his life #his rank is so high that he doesn’t really have many social equals #and the friendships he does have with other men are often coloured by politics (even his friendship with to no chujo is in the end)#while his relationships with women are almost always conducted as love affairs #he rarely has the opportunity to just mess around with other people #so his friendship with taifu no myobu really represents for me a type of casual and easy human attachment which he can rarely attain #skdjfjdjgk yeah i just. i sometimes just stop and think about how lonely everyone in this book is #((((:#but that’s one of the reasons I love taifu no myobu!!! because she is so vibrant and charismatic and sassy #even though she’s a minor character she really lights up the page :)#characters like her remind me that while the tale of genji may be tragic at times it isn’t exclusively a tragedy at all #ask response #anonymous #tale of genji #genji talk
