సనత్కుమారుడిట్లు పలికెను- తన సైన్యములో ప్రముఖభాగము నశించుటయు, తనకు ప్రాణముతో సమమైన వీరులు సంహరింప బడుటను గాంచి అపుడా దానవుడు మిక్కిలి కోపించెను (1). అతడు శంభునితో, 'నేను యుద్ధములో నిలబడి యున్నాను. నీవు కూడ నిలబడుము. వీరిని సంహరించుట వలన లాభమేమి గలదు? ఇపుడు నాఎదుట నిలబడి యుద్ధమును చేయుము' అని పలికెను (2). ఓ మునీ! ఆ దానవవీరుడు ఇట్లు పలికి దృఢనిశ్చయము చేసుకొని యుద్ధమునకు సన్నద్ధుడై శంకరుని ఎదుట నిలబడెను (3). ఆ దానవుడు మహారుద్రునిపై దివ్యములగు అస్త్రములను, బాణములను, మేఘము నీటిని వలె, వర్షించెను (4). దేవతలలో, గణములలో గల శ్రేష్ఠులందరు కూడ ఊహింప శక్యము కాని, కంటికి కానరాని, భయంకరములగు అనేక మాయలను ఆతడు ప్రదర్శించెను (5). అపుడు శంకరుడు వాటిని గాంచి గొప్ప దివ్యమైన, మాయలన్నింటినీ నశింపజేయు మహేశ్వరాస్త్రమును అవలీలగా ప్రయోగించెను (6). అపుడు దాని తేజస్సుచే వాని మాయలన్నియు శీఘ్రమే అదృశ్యమగుటయే గాక వాని దివ్యాస్త్రములు కూడ తేజోవిహీనములాయెను (7).
అపుడా యుద్ధములో మహాబలుడగు మహేశ్వరుడు ఆతనిని వధించుటకై గొప్ప తేజశ్శాలురకు కూడ నివారింప శక్యము గాని శూలమును వెంటనే పట్టుకొనెను (8). అదే కాలములో ఆ ప్రయత్నమును అడ్డుకొనుటకై ఆకాశవాణి ఇట్లు పలికెను : ఓ శంకరా! ఇపుడు నాప్రార్తనను విని శూలమును ప్రక్కన పెట్టుము (9).

🌻 Śaṅkhacūḍa is slain - 1 🌻
Sanatkumāra said:—
1. On seeing the important and major portion of his army killed, including heroes as dear to him as his life, the Dānava became very furious.
2. He spoke to Śiva. “I am here standing ready. Be steady in the battle. What is it to me, if these are killed? Fight me standing face to face”.
3. O sage, after saying this and resolving resolutely the king of Dānavas stood ready facing Śiva.
4. The Dānava hurled divine missiles at him and showered arrows like the cloud pouring rain.
5. He exhibited various kinds of deceptive measures invisible and inscrutable to all the excellent gods and Gaṇas and terrifying as well.
6. On seeing that, Śiva sportively discharged thereat the excessively divine Māheśvara missiles that destroy all illusions.
7. All the illusions, were quelled rapidly by its brilliance. Though they were divine missiles they became divested of their brilliance.
8. Then in the battle, the powerful lord Śiva suddenly seized his trident which could not be withstood even by brilliant persons, in order to slay him.
9. In order to prevent him then, an unembodied celestial voice said—“O Śiva, do not hurl the trident now. Please listen to this request.

🌻. కార్తికేయుని కొరకై అన్వేషణ - 4 🌻
బ్రహ్మ ఇట్లు పలికెను -
త్రిపురారి యగు శివుడు వారి ఆ మాటలను విని ఆనందించి బ్రహ్మణులకు ప్రీతితో అనేక దక్షిణల నిచ్చెను (33). పుత్రుని వార్తను వినిన పార్వతి అంతరంగములో మిక్కిలి సంతసించి బ్రాహ్మణులకు కోటి రత్నములను, వివిధ ధనములను ఇచ్చెను (34). లక్ష్మి సరస్వతి, మేన, సావిత్రి, మరియు ఇతర దేవతా స్త్రీలు, విష్ణువు మొదలుగా గల సర్వ దేవతలు బ్రాహ్మణులకు ధనము నిచ్చిరి (35).
తరువాత దేవతలు, మునులు, పర్వతములు ప్రోత్సహించగా, ఆ ప్రభుడు తన పుత్రుడు ఉన్న చోటికి గణములను దూతలుగా పంపెను (36).
వీరభద్రుని, విశాలాక్షుని, శంకుకర్ణుని, కరాక్రముని, నందీశ్వరుని, మహాకాలుని, వజ���రదంష్ట్రుని, మహోన్మదుని (37), గోకర్ణాస్యుని, దధిముఖుని, అగ్ని జ్వాలలవలె ప్రకాశించు అక్ష క్షేత్ర పాలకులను, మూడు లక్షల భూతములను (38), రుద్రులను, శివునితో సమానమగు పరాక్రమము గల భైరవులను, వికృతరూపము గల ఇతరులను లెక్కలేనంత మందిని పంపెను.
ఓ నారదా! (39) అనేక శస్త్రాస్త్రములను చేతులయందు ధరించి గర్వించి యున్న ఆ శివదూతలు అందరు కృత్తికల భవనమును చుట్టు ముట్టిరి (40).
ఆ కృత్తికలు వారిని చూచి భయముతో కంగారుతో నిండిన మనస్సు గలవారై, బ్రహ్మ తేజస్సుతో వెలిగి పోవుచున్న కార్తికునితో చెప్పిరి (41).
కృత్తికలిట్లు పలికిరి -
కుమారా! లెక్క లేనన్ని సైన్యములు ఇంటిని చుట్టు ముట్టినవి. ఏమి చేయవలెను? ఎచటకు పోవలెను? గొప్ప భయము సంప్రాప్తమైనరది (42).

Brahmā said:—
33. On hearing their words, the destroyer of Pura[2] became glad. In his joy he gave monetary gifts to the brahmins.
34. On receiving the news of her son, Pārvatī was delighted. She distributed a crore of gems and much wealth among the brahmins.
35. Lakṣmī, Sarasvatī, Menā, Sāvitrī and all other women, Viṣṇu and all other gods gave much wealth to the brahmins.
36. Urged by the gods, sages and mountains, the lord sent his Gaṇas as his emissaries to the place where his son was staying.
37-39. O Nārada, he sent Vīrabhadra, Viśālākṣa, Śaṅkukarṇa, Parākrama, Nandīśvara, Mahākāla, Vajradaṃṣṭra, Mahonmada, Gokarṇāsya, Dadhimukha who was comparable to the blazing flame of fire, a hundred thousand Kṣetrapālas, three hundred thousand Bhūtas, Rudras, Bhairavas, and innumerable others of the same exploit as that of Śiva and of hideous features.
40. All the emissaries of Śiva went and haughtily encircled the abode of the Kṛttikās with various miraculous weapons in their hands.
41. On seeing them the Kṛttikās were extremely terrified. They spoke to Kārttikeya blazing with divine splendour.
Kṛttikās said:—
42. Dear boy, innumerable soldiers have encircled the house. What shall be done? Where are we to gc. A great danger has beset us.

🌻. శంఖచూడుని సైన్యమును వధించుట - 5 🌻
తన గద ముక్కలు కాగా ఆ దానవుడు చాలా కోపించి శూలమును చేతబట్టెను. తేజశ్శాలియగు ఆతని శూలము మండుతూ శత్రువులకు సహింప శక్యము కానిదియై ఉండెను (37). శూలమును చేతబట్టి మీదకు వచ్చుచున్న సుందరాకారుడగు ఆ దానవచక్రవర్తిని హరుడు తన త్రిశూలముతో వేగముగా హృదయము నందు పొడిచెను (38). త్రిశూలముచే చీల్చబడిన హృదయమునుండి ఒక గొప్ప పురుషుడు బయటకు వచ్చెను. శంఖచూడుని హృదయమునుండి వచ్చిన ఆ పరాక్రమశాలియగు పురుషుడు 'నిలు, నిలు' అని పలికెను (39). ఆతడు బయటకు వచ్చుట తోడనే శివుడు బిగ్గరగా నవ్వి ఆతని భయంకరమగు శిరస్సును కత్తితో నరుకగా ఆతడు నేలగూలెను (40).
తరువాత కాళి తన నోటిని తెరచి అనేక మంది రాక్షసుల తలలు పళ్ల మధ్యలో నలుగుతుండగా క్రోధముతో భయంకరముగా వారిని భక్షించెను (41). మిగిలిన రాక్షసులలో చాల మందిని కోపముచే కల్లోలితుడైన క్షేత్రపాలుడు భక్షించెను. మరి కొందరు భైరవుని అస్త్రములచే చీల్చబడి మరణించిరి. ఇతరులు గాయపడిరి (42). బుద్ధిమంతుడగు వీరభద్రుడు అనేక మందిని క్రోధముతో సంహరించెను. దేవతలను హింసపెట్టిన అనేక రాక్షసులను నందీశ్వరుడు సంహరించెను (43). అపుడీ విధముగా వీరులగు అనేకగణములు కోపము గలవారై యుద్ధసన్నద్ధులై దేవతలను పీడించిన అనేకమంది రాక్షసులను సంహరించిరి (44). ఈ విధముగా ఆ యుద్ధములో శంఖచూడుని సైన్యములో అధికభాగము మట్టుపెట్టబడెను. మిగిలిన అనేకమంది వీరులు భయభీతులై పారిపోయిరి (45).
శ్రీ శివమహాపురాణములోని రుద్రసంహితయందు యుద్ధఖండలో శంఖచూడసైన్యవధ వర్ణనమనే ముప్పది తొమ్మిదవ అధ్యాయము ముగిసినది (39).

🌻 The annihilation of the army of Śaṅkhacūḍa - 5 🌻
37. When the mace was split, the Dānava became very furious. The brilliant Dānava took up a spear that blazed unbearable to the enemies.
38. By means of his trident śiva hit the comely king of Dānavas rapidly in the chest even as he approached with the spear in his hand.
39. From the chest of Śaṅkhacūḍa pierced by the trident, a valorous huge being came out and said “Stand by, Stand by”.
40. Laughing noisily Śiva severed the terrible head of the being that was coming out, by means of a sword. He fell on the ground.
41. Then spreading her mouth wide open Kālī furiously devoured innumerable Asuras whose heads were crushed by her fierce fangs.
42. The excited and infuriated Kṣetrapāla devoured many other Daityas. Some were killed struck down by Bhairava’s missiles. Others were wounded.
43. Vīrabhadra furiously destroyed many other heroes. Nandīśvara killed many other demons.
44. Thus the other Gaṇas, readily prepared and furiously heroic, destroyed many Daityas, Asuras and suppressors of the gods.
45. Thus a major portion of his army was destroyed there. Many other soldiers, cowardly and terrified, fled.

మరల శివశంఖచూడుల మధ్య పెద్ద యుద్ధము చెలరేగెను. పర్వతములు, సరస్సులు మరియు సముద్రములతో కూడియున్న భూమి మరియు స్వర్గము కూడ కంపించెను (29). ఆ యుద్ధములో శంఖచూడుడు ప్రయోగించిన బాణములను శివుడు, శివుడు ప్రయోగించిన వేలాది బాణములను శంఖచూడుడు అనేక పర్యాయములు తమ తమ వాడి బాణములతో ఛేదించిరి (30). అపుడు శంభుడు కోపించి త్రిశూలముతో వానిని కొట్టగా, ఆ దెబ్బకు తాళజాలక ఆతడు మూర్ఛిల్లి నేలపై బడెను (31). అపుడా రాక్షసుడు క్షణములో తెలివి దెచ్చుకొని ధనస్సును ఎక్కుపెట్టి రుద్రుని, ఆయన అనుచరులనందరినీ బాణములతో కొట్టెను (32).
ప్రతాపవంతుడగు శంఖచూడుడు పదివేల బాహువులను పొంది ఒక్కసారిగా పదివేల చక్రములతో శంకరుని కప్పివేసెను (33). అపుడు దుర్గకు భర్త, దుర్గమములగు కష్టములనుండి గట్టెక్కించువాడు నగు రుద్రుడు కోపించి వెంటనే ఉత్తమములగు తన బాణములతో ఆ చక్రములను ఛేదించెను (34). అపుడా దానవుడు పెద్ద సేనతో గూడి గదను చేతబట్టి వెంటనే శివుని కొట్టుటకై వేగముగా ముందునకురికెను (35). దుష్టుల మదమునడంచు ఆ శివుడు మిక్కిలి కోపించి వేగముగా మీద పడబోవుచున్న ఆ శంఖచూడుని గదను పదునైన కత్తితో ముక్కలుగా చేసెను (36).

29. Again the great battle between Śiva and the Dānava was resumed. The heaven and the earth including all mountains, oceans and rivers shook and trembled.
30. Śiva split up the arrows discharged by the son of Dambha by means of hundred and thousands of his fierce arrows. Similarly the arrows of Śiva were split up by the Dānava.
31. Then the infuriated Śiva hit him with his trident. Unable to bear that blow he fell unconscious on the ground.
32. The Asura regained consciousness rapidly. He seized his bow and hit Rudra and all others by means of his arrows.
33. The valorous Saṅkhacūḍa assumed ten thousand arms by means of magic and rapidly enveloped Śiva by means of ten thousand discuses.
34. Then Śiva, the infuriated consort of Durgā, the destroyer of all insurmountable distress split the discuses rapidly by means of his excellent arrows.
35. Then the Dānava seized his mace and accompanied by a huge army rushed at Śiva with the intention to kill him.
36. The infuriated Śiva, the destroyer of the pride of the wicked split the mace of the Dānava rushing headlong by means of a sharp-edged sword.

🌻. శంఖచూడుని సైన్యమును వధించుట - 3 🌻
తన మీదకు వచ్చుచున్న ఆ దానవుని గాంచి శివుడు ఉత్సాహముతో డమరుధ్వనిని చేసి, మరియు సహింప శక్యము కాని ధనస్సు యొక్క నారిత్రాటి శబ్దమును కూడ చేసెను (19). ఆ ప్రభుడు కొమ్ము బూరా ధ్వనితో దిక్కులను నింపి వేసెను. ఆ కైలాసపతి అపుడు రాక్షసులకు భయమును గొల్పువాడై స్వయముగా గర్జించెను (20). ఆయన అధిష్ఠించిన మహావృషభము బిగ్గరగా నాదములను చేసి ఆకాశమును భూమిని ఎనిమిది దిక్కులను శబ్దముతో నింపివేసెను. ఆ నాదమును విన్న ఏనుగులు తాము గొప్పయను గర్వమును విడువవలసినదే (21). భయంకరాకారుడగు రుద్రుడు నేలపై రెండు చేతులతో కొట్టి ఆకాశములోనికి ఎగిరి చప్పట్లు కొట్టగా ఆ ధ్వని త���్పూర్వమునందలి ధ్వనులనన్నిటినీ మించి యుండెను (22).
ఆ మహాయుద్ధములో క్షేత్రపాలుడు అమంగళకరమగు పెద్ద అట్టహాసమును చేసెను. భైరవుడు కూడ పెద్ద నాదమును చేసెను (23). సంగ్రామమధ్యములో భయంకరమగు పెద్ద కోలాహలము చెలరేగెను. అపుడు గణముల మధ్యలో అన్నివైపుల నుండియు వీరుల గర్జనలు బయలుదేరెను (24). భయంకరములగు ఆ పరుషశబ్దములను విని దానవులందరు చాల భయపడిరి. దానవచక్రవర్తి, మహాబలశాలి యగు శంఖచూడుడు ఆ ధ్వనులను విని మిక్కిలి కోపించెను (25). హరుడు 'ఓరీ దుర్బుద్ధీ! నిలు నిలు' అని పలుకగానే, దేవతలు మరియు గణములు వెంటనే జయజయధ్వనులను చేసిరి (26). అపుడు దంభుని పుత్రుడు, గొప్ప ప్రతాపశాలియగు ఆ శంఖచూడుడు వచ్చి జ్వాలల మాలలతో మిక్కిలి భయమును గొల్పు శక్తిని రుద్రుని పైకి విసిరెను (27). యుద్ధరంగములో పెద్ద నిప్పుల గుండమువలె వచ్చుచున్న ఆ శక్తిని క్షేత్రపాలుడు వెంటనే తన నోటినుండి పుట్టిన పెద్ద ఉల్కతో చల్లార్చివేసెను. (28).

🌻 The annihilation of the army of Śaṅkhacūḍa - 3 🌻
19. On seeing him coming on, Śiva sounded his Ḍamaru enthusiastically and twanged the bowstring, the noise whereof was unbearable.
20. The lord filled all the quarters with the sound of his horn. Śiva himself roared then, frightening the Asuras.
21. The lordly bull then bellowed putting the haughty trumpeting elephants to shame. The deep roar filled the sky, the earth and the eight quarters.
22. With his hands the fierce lord Śiva clapped the earth and the sky. All the previous shouts and roars were surpassed by that sound.
23. The Kṣetrapāla produced a boisterous laughing sound boding ill to the Asuras. In that great battle Bhairava too roared.
24. There was a terrific tumult in the midst of that battle. All round amongst the Gaṇas, the shouts of heroes rose up.
25. The Dānavas were frightened by those harsh and terrible sounds. On hearing them the powerful king of Dānavas became very furious.
26. When Śiva shouted “O wicked one, stay by. Stay by”, the gods and the Gaṇas rapidly shouted “victory, Victory”.
27. Then coming again the valorous son of Dambha hurled at Rudra his spear terrible with shooting flames.
28. While it came on, blazing brilliantly like a great conflagration in the battleground, it was immediately suppressed by Kṣeṭrapāla by means of the meteor springing from his mouth.

🌻. శంఖచూడుని సైన్యమును వధించుట - 2 🌻
ముక్కంటి, దుష్టశిక్షకుడు, శిష్టరక్షకుడు నగు మహారుద్రుడు కోపించి వాని అవయవములను శస్త్రపరంపరలతో కొట్టెను (10). అపుడా రాక్షసుడు పదునైన ఖడ్గమును, డాలును తీసుకొని శివుని శ్రేష్ఠవాహనమగు వృషభమును శిరస్సుపై వేగముగా కొట్టెను (11). వాహనమీ తీరున కొట్టబడగా రుద్రుడు వాని ఖడ్గమును మరియు గొప్పగా ప్రకాశించే డాలును అవలీలగా శీఘ్రమే తన క్షురప్రమనే ఆయుధముతో విరుగగొట్టెను (12). తన డాలు విరుగగానే ఆ రాక్షసుడు అపుడు శక్తిని ప్రయోగించెను. తన మీదకు వచ్చుచున్న ఆ శక్తిని హరుడు తన బాణముతో రెండు ముక్కలుగా చేసెను (13). కోపముతో మండిపడిన శంఖచూడాసురుడు చక్రమును ప్రయోగించెను. హరుడు వెంటనే దానిని కూడ తన పిడికిలితో కొట్టి చూర్ణము చేసెను (14). ఆతడు వెంటనే గదను వేగముతో శివుని పైకి విసిరెను. శంభుడు దానిని కూడ వెంటనే విరిచి బూడిద చేసెను (15).
అపుడు దానవచక్రవర్తి యగు శంఖచూడుడు చేతితో గొడ్డలిని పట్టుకొని క్రోధముతో వ్యాకులుడై వేగముగా శివుని పైకి పరుగెత్తెను (16). గొడ్డలి చేతియందు గల ఆ రాక్షసుని శంకరుడు వెంటనే తన బాణపరంపరలచే కప్పివేసి అవలీలగా నేలపై బడవేసెను (17). తరువాత ఆతడు క్షణములో తెలివిని దెచ్చుకొని దివ్యములగు ఆయుధములను బాణములను ధరించి మంచి రధమునెక్కి ఆకాశమునంతనూ వ్యాపించి ప్రకాశించెను (18).

🌻 The annihilation of the army of Śaṅkhacūḍa - 2 🌻
10. Mahārudra, the odd-eyed Śiva, the punisher of the wicked and the goal of the good, angrily hit his limbs with various weapons.
11. Taking up his sharp sword and the leather shield the Dānava rushed at the sacred bull of Śiva and hit it on its head.
12. When his bull was hit, Śiva sportively cut off the sword and the shining shield by means of his Kṣurapra.
13. When the shield was split, the Asura hurled his spear. Śiva split it into two with his arrow as it came before him.
14. The infuriated Dānava, Śaṅkhacūḍa hurled a discus. Immediately Śiva smashed it into pieces with his fist.
15. He hurled his club with force at Śiva. Rapidly split by Śiva, the club was reduced to ashes.
16. Then seizing an axe with his hand, the infuriated king of Dānavas, Śaṅkhacūḍa rushed at Śiva.
17. By the volley of his arrows Śiva sportively struck the Asura with axe in his hand.
18. The Dānava quickly regained consciousness and got into his excellent chariot. With divine weapons and arrows he encompassed the whole sky and shone.

వ్యాసుడిట్లు పలికెను- కాళి యొక్క వచనములను విని ఈశానుడు ఏమనినాడు? ఏమి చేసినాడు? ఓ మహాబుద్ధి శాలీ! నీవా విషయమును చెప్పుము. నాకు చాల కుతూహలముగ నున్నది (1).
సనత్కుమారుడిట్లు పలికెను - కాళి యొక్క మాటలను విని, పరమేశ్వరుడు, గొప్ప లీలలను చేయువాడు, మంగళకరుడు నగు శంభుడు నవ్వి ఆమెను ఓదార్చెను (2). ఆకాశవాణి యొక్క పలుకులను తెలుసుకొని, తత్త్వ జ్ఞాన పండితుడగు శంకరుడు తన గణములతో గూడి స్వయముగా యుద్ధమునకు వెళ్లెను (3). మహేశ్వరుడు గొప్ప వృషభము నెక్కి, వీరభద్రాదులు తోడు రాగా, తనతో సమానమైన భైరవులు, క్షేత్రపాలురు చుట్టువారి యుండగా, వీరరూపమును దాల్చి రణరంగమును చేరెను. అచట ఆ రుద్రుడు మూర్తీభవించిన మృత్యువువలె అధికముగా ప్రకాశించెను (4, 5). ఆ శంఖచూడుడు శివుని గాంచి విమానమునుండి దిగి పరమభక్తితో శిరస్సును నేలపై ఉంచి సాష్టాంగ నమస్కారమును చేసెను (6). ఆతడు శివునకు ప్రణమిల్లిన పిదప యోగశక్తిచే విమానము నధిష్ఠించి వెంటనే ధనుర్బాణములను గ్రహించి యుద్ధమునకు సన్నద్ధుడాయెను (7).
వారిద్దరు అపుడు వర్షించే రెండు మేఘముల వలె భయంకరమగు బాణవర్షమును కురిపిస్తూ వందసంవత్సరములు చేసిరి (8). మహావీరుడగు శంఖచూడుడు భయంకరములగు బాణములను ప్రయోగించగా, శంకరుడు వాటిని తన బాణపరంపరలచే అవలీలగా చీల్చివేసెను (9).

Vyāsa said:—
1. O intelligent one, on hearing the narrative of Kālī what did Śiva say? What did he do? Please narrate to me. I am eager to know it.
Sanatkumāra said:—
2. On hearing the words of Kālī, lord Śiva, the actor of great divine sports, laughed. Śiva consoled her.
3. On hearing the celestial voice, Śiva, an expert in the knowledge of principles, went himself to the battle along with his Gaṇas.
4. He was seated on his great bull and surrounded by Vīrabhadra and others, the Bhairavas and the Kṣetrapālas all equal in valour to him.
5. Assuming a heroic form, lord Śiva entered the battle ground. There Śiva shone well as the embodied form of the annihilator.
6. On seeing Śiva, Śaṅkhacūḍa got down from the aerial chariot, bowed with great devotion and fell flat on the ground.
7. After bowing to him he immediately got into his chariot. He speedily prepared for the fight and seized the bow and the arrows.
8. The fight between Śiva and the Dānava went on for a hundred years and they showered arrows fiercely like clouds pouring down incessantly.
9. The heroic Śaṅkhacūḍa discharged terrible arrows playfully. Śiva split all of them by means of his arrows.

ప్రతాపశాలియగు ఆ శంఖచూడుడు మరుక్షణములో తెలివిని పొంది లేచి నిలబడెను. ఆమె యందు తల్లి యను భావన కలవాడగుటచే ఆమెతో బాహుయుద్ధమును ఆతడు చేయలేదు (29). ఆ దేవి మహాకోపముతో ఆ దానవుని పట్టుకొని పలుమార్లు గిరగిర త్రిప్పి పైకి వేగముతో విసిరివేసెను (30).
ప్రతాపవంతుడగు శంఖచూడుడు వేగముగా పైకి ఎగిరి మరల క్రిందకు దిగి నిలబడి భద్రకాళికకు ప్రణమిల్లెను (31). ఆతడు ఆనందముతో నిండిన మనస్సు గలవాడై శ్రేష్ఠమగు రత్నములతో గొప్ప కౌశలముతో నిర్మించబడిన మిక్కిలి అందమగు విమానము నధిరోహించెను. ఆ మహాయుద్ధములో ఆతడు కంగారు పడలేదు (32). ఆ కాళి ఆకలితో దానవుల రక్తమును త్రాగెను. ఇంతలో అచట ఆకాశవాణి ఇట్లు పలికెను (33). ఇంకనూ గర్వించి యున్న లక్ష మంది దానవవీరులు గర్జిస్తూ యుద్ధరంగములో మిగిలి యున్నారు. ఓ ఈశ్వరీ! నీవు వారిని భక్షించుము (34). యుద్ధములో శంఖచూడుని సంహరించవలెనని కోరకుము. ఓదేవీ! ఆ దానవవీరుడు నీ చేతిలో మరణించడు. ఇది నిశ్చయము (35). ఆకాశమునుండి వెలుబడిన ఆ పలుకులను విని ఆ భద్రకాళీదేవి అపుడు అనేకమంది దానవుల రక్తమును త్రాగి మాంసమును తిని శంకరుని సన్నిధికి వచ్చి యుద్ధములో జరిగిన ఘటనలను ముందు వెనుకల క్రమమును తప్పకుండ చెప్పెను (36, 37).
శ్రీ శివ మహా పురాణములో రుద్ర సంహిత యందలి యుద్ధ ఖండలో కాళీయుద్ధ వర్ణనమనే ముప్పది ఎనిమిదవ అధ్యాయము ముగిసినది (38).

29. Immediately the Dānava regained consciousness and got up valorously. He did not fight her with his arms by the thought that she was a woman like his mother.
30. The goddess seized the Dānava, whirled him again and again and tossed him up with great anger and velocity.
31. The valorous Śaṅkhacūḍa fell down after being tossed up very high. He got up and bowed down to Bhadrakālī.
32. Highly delighted thereafter, he got into a beautiful aerial chariot of exquisite workmanship set with gems and did not lose the balance of his mind in the battlefield.
33. Hungrily Kālī drank the blood of the Dānavas. In the meantime an unembodied celestial voice said:
34. O goddess, a hundred thousand haughty leading Dānavas have been left out in the battle still roaring. Devour them quickly.
35. Do not think of slaying the king of Dānavas. O goddess, Śaṅkhacūḍa cannot be killed by you. It is certain.
36-37. On hearing these words from the firmament, Bhadrakālī drank the blood and devoured the flesh of many Dānavas and went near Śiva. She then narrated to him the events of the war in the proper order.

భయంకరురాలగు ఆమె శంఖచూడుని భక్షించుటకై వేగముగా పరుగెత్తెను. ఆ దానవుడు దివ్యమైన రౌద్రాస్త్రముతో ఆమెను ఆపి వేసెను (20). అపుడు దానవవీరుడు కోపించి, గ్రీష్మకాలము నందలి సూర్యుని బోలిన పదునైన మిక్కిలి భయంకరమగు ఖడ్గమును వేగముగా ప్రయోగించెను (21).
ఆ కాళి నిప్పులు చెరుగుతూ తన మీదకు వచ్చుచున్న ఆ కత్తిని గాంచి కోపముతోనోటిని తెరిచి, శంఖచూడుడు చూచుచుండగా, నమిలి వేసెను (22). దానవవవీరుడగు ఆతడు ఇతరములగు దివ్యాస్త్రములను ప్రయోగించెను. కాని ఆమె వాటిని తనను చేరుటకు ముందే ముక్కముక్కలుగా చేసెను (23). తరువాత ఆ మహాదేవి ఆతనిని భక్షించుటకై వేగముగా మీదకు వెళ్లెను. కాని శోభాయుక్తుడు, సిద్ధులందరిలో గొప్ప వాడునగు ఆ శంఖచూడుడు అంతర్ధానమును చెందెను (24). ఆ శంఖచూడుని గాన రాక, కాళి వేగముగా తన పిడికిలితో వాని రథమును విరుగగొట్టి సారథిని సంహరించెను (25). తరువాత మాయావి యగు శంఖచూడుడు వేగముగా మరలి వచ్చి భద్రకాళిపై ప్రలయకాలాగ్ని జ్వాలలను బోలియున్న చక్రమును వేగముగా ప్రయోగించెను (26). అపుడు దేవి ఆ చక్రమును ఎడమచేతితో అవలీలగా పట్టుకొని కోపముతో వెంటనే నోటిలో వేసుకొని భక్షించెను (27). ఆ దేవి మిక్కిలి కోపముతో వేగముగా వానిని పిడికిలితో కొట్టగా, ఆ దానవవీరుడు గిరగిర తిరిగి క్షణకాలము మూర్ఛిల్లెను (28).

20. The terrible goddess rushed at Śaṅkhacūḍa to devour him. The Dānava prevented her by means of the divine missile of Rudra.
21. Then the infuriated leader of the Dānavas hurled a sword, as fierce as the summer sun, with sharp and terrific edge.
22. On seeing the blazing sword approaching, Kālī furiously opened her mouth and swallowed it even as Śaṅkhacūḍa stood watching.
23. The lord of Dānavas hurled many divine missiles but before they reached her she broke them into hundreds of pieces.
24. Again the great goddess rushed at him in order to devour him. But that glorious Dānava, leader of all Siddhas vanished from sight.
25. Thus unable to see him, Kālī who rushed with great velocity crushed his chariot and killed the charioteer with her fist.
26. Then Śaṅkhacūḍa, an expert in using deception returned quickly and forcefully hurled the wheel blazing like the flame of fire of dissolution, at Bhadrakāli.
27. The goddess sportively caught hold of the wheel with her left hand and immediately swallowed it.
28. The goddess then hit him with her fist forcefully and angrily. The king of Dānavas whirled round and fainted for a short while.

అపుడా దానవవీరుడు కోపించి వేగముగా ధనుస్సును ఎక్కుపెట్టి మంత్రములను పఠిస్తూ దేవిపై దివ్యాస్త్రములను ప్రయోగించెను (11). ఆమె విశాలమగు నోరును తెరచి ఆ అస్త్రమును ఆహారమును వలె భుజించి గర్జించి అట్టహాసమును చేయగా దానవులు భయపడిరి (12). ఆతడు వందయోజనముల వెడల్పు గల శక్తిని కాళిపై ప్రయోగించగా, ఆ దేవి అనేక దివ్యాస్త్రములతో దానిని వంద ముక్కలుగా చేసెను (13). ఆతడు చండికపై వైష్ణవాస్త్రమును ప్రయోగించగా, ఆమె మహేశ్వరాస్త్రముతో దానిని తప్పించెను (14).
ఈ తీరున వారిద్దరి మధ్య చిరకాలము యుద్ధము జరిగెను. దేవదానవులందరు ప్రేక్షకులుగా నుండి పోయిరి (15). అపుడు యుద్ధములో మృత్యుసమానురాలగు కాళీమహాదేవి కోపించి మంత్రముచే పవిత్రమైన పాశుపతాస్త్రమును స్వీకరించెను (16). దానిని ప్రయోగించుటకు పూర్వమే ఆపివేయుటకై ఆకాశవాణి ఇట్లు పలికెను : ఓ దేవీ! కోపముతో ఈ అస్త్రమును శంఖచూడునిపై ప్రయోగించకుము (17). ఓ చండికా! పాశుపతాస్త్రము అమోఘమైనదే అయినా వీనికి దానివలన మరణము రాదు. వీరుడగు శంఖచూడుని వధించుటకు మరియొక ఉపాయము నాలోచించుము (18). ఈ మాటను విని భద్రకాళి ఆ అస్త్రమును ప్రయోగించలేదు. అపుడామె ఆకలితో కోటి మంది దానవులను అవలీలగా తినివేసెను (19).

11. Then the infuriated leader of the Dānavas drew the bow violently and discharged divine missiles at the goddess with due invocation through the mantras.
12. Opening the mouth very wide she swallowed the missiles and roared with a boisterous laugh. The Dānavas were terrified.
13. He then hurled a Śakti, a hundred Yojanas long at Kālī. By means of divine missiles she broke it into a hundred pieces.
14. He hurled the Vaiṣṇava missile on Kālī. She blocked it with the Māheśvara missile.
15. Thus the mutual combat went on for a long time. All the gods and Dānavas stood as mere onlookers.
16. Then the infuriated goddess Kālī, as fierce as the god of death on the battleground, took up angrily the Pāśupata arrow sanctified by mantras.
17. In order to prevent it from being hurled, an unembodied celestial voice said—“0 goddess, do not hurl this missile angrily at Śaṇkhacūḍa.”
18. “O Caṇḍikā, death of this Dānava will not take place even through the never failing Pāsupata missile. Think of some other means for slaying this warrior Śaṅkhacūḍa.”
19. On hearing this, Bhadrakālī did not hurl the missile. Sportively she devoured ten million Dānavas as if in hunger.

సనత్కుమారుడిట్లు పలికెను- ఆమె యుద్ధ రంగమునకు వెళ్లి సింహనాదమును చేసెను. ఆ దేవియొక్క నాదమును తాళజాలక దానవులు మూర్ఛను పొందిరి (1). ఆమె అమంగళకరమగు అట్టహాసమును పలుమార్లు చేసి మధువును త్రాగి యుద్ధరంగములో నాట్యము చేసెను (2). ఉగ్రదంష్ట్ర, ఉగ్రదండ, కోటవి అను పేర్లుగల దేవీ మూర్తులు కూడ ఇతర దేవీమూర్తులతో గూడి ఆ యుద్ధములో మధువును అధికముగా త్రాగి నాట్యమాడిరి (3). శివగణములలో మరియు దేవతల దళములలో అపుడు పెద్ద కోలాహలము బయలు దేరెను. దేవతలు, గణములు మరియు ఇతరులు అందరు అధికముగా గర్జిస్తూ ఆనందించిరి (4). కాళిని చూచి శంఖచూడుడు వెంటనే యుద్ధమునకు వచ్చెను. భయమును పొందియున్న దానవులకు ఆ రాక్షసరాజు అభయమునిచ్చెను. (5) కాళి ప్రళయకాలాగ్నిని బోలిన అగ్నిని విరజిమ్మెను. కాని ఆ దానవేంద్రుడు దానిని వెంటనే వైష్ణవాస్త్రముతో అవలీలగా త్రిప్పికొట్టెను (6). అపుడా దేవి వెంటనే అతనిపై నారాయణాస్త్రమును ప్రయోగించెను. ఆ దానవ వీరున��� గాంచి ఆ అస్త్రము వర్ధిల్లెను (7).
ప్రళయకాలాగ్ని జ్వాలను బోలియున్న ఆ అగ్నిని గాంచి శంఖచూడుడు దండమువలె నేలపై బడి పలుమార్లు ప్రణమిల్లెను (8). వినీతుడై యున్న దానవుని ంచి ఆ ఆయుధము వెనుదిరిగెను. అపుడా దేవి మంత్రమును పఠించి బ్రహ్మాస్త్రమును ప్రయోగించెను (9). ఆ దానవవీరుడు నిప్పులు గ్రక్కు చున్న దానిని గాంచి నేలపై నిలబడి ప్రణమిల్లి బ్రహ్మాస్త్రముతో దానిని తప్పించెను (10).

Sanatkumāra said:—
1. Going to the battle ground, the goddess Kālī roared like a lion. On hearing that the Dānavas fainted.
2. She laughed boisterously again and again boding ill to the Asuras. She drank the distilled grapewine and danced on the battle ground.
3. The manifestations of Durgā viz—Ugradaṃṣṭrā (one with fierce fangs) Ugradaṇḍā (one with fierce baton) and Kotavī (the naked) danced on the battle ground and drank wine.
4. There was great tumult on the side of the Gaṇas and the gods. All the gods and the Gaṇas roared and rejoiced.
5. On seeing Kālī, Śaṅkhacūḍa hastened to the battle ground. The Dānavas were frightened but the king Śaṅkhacūḍa assured them of protection.
6. Kālī hurled fire as fierce as the flame of dissolution which the king put out sportively by means of Vaiṣṇava missiles.
7. Immediately the goddess hurled the Nārāyaṇa missile at him. The missile developed its power on seeing the Dānava Śaṅkhacūḍa.
8. On realising it as fierce as the flame of fire of dissolution, the Dānava Śaṅkhacūḍa fell flat on the ground and bowed again and again.
9. On seeing the Dānava humbled the missile turned away. Then the goddess hurled the Brahmā missile with due invocation through the mantra.
10. On seeing the missile blazing he bowed and fell on the ground. The leader of the Dānavas thus prevented the Brahmā missile from attacking him.

అతడు దానవుల ప్రభువు ఛాతీపై సూర్యునివలె తన బల్లెమును విసరెను. ఆ దెబ్బకి స్పృహతప్పి పడిపోయాడు. (33). ఆ శక్తివంతమైన అసురుడు ఒక ముహూర్తంలో బాధ నుండి విముక్తి పొందాడు మరియు స్పృహలోకి వచ్చాడు. లియోనైన్ శక్తితో అతను లేచి గర్జించాడు. (34) అతను తన ఈటెతో గొప్ప శక్తి గల కార్తికేయుడిని కొరికాడు. ఆ బల్లెమును చేయక, బ్రహ్మ వరము, వ్యర్థము, కార్తికేయుడు నేలమీద పడ్డాడు. (35).
కాళి ఆతనిని తన ఒడిలోనికి తీసుకొని శివునిసన్నిధికి చేర్చగా, శివుడు తన జ్ఞానముచే ఆతనిని అవలీలగా జీవింపజేసెను (36). మరియు శివుడు ఆతనికి అనంత బలము నిచ్చెను. అపుడు ప్రతాపశాలి, శివపుత్రుడునగు స్కందుడు లేచి నిలబడి, మరల బయలుదేరుటకు సిద్ధపడెను (37). ఇంతలో వీరుడు, మహాబలుడు అగు వీరభద్రుడు యుద్ధములో గొప్ప బలమును ప్రదర్శించే శంఖచూడునితో పోరాడెను (38). శంఖచూడుడు యుద్ధములో ఏయే అస్త్రములను వర్షమువలె కురిపించెనో, ఆయా అస్త్రములను వీరుడగు వీరభద్రుడు తన బాణములచే అవలీలగా ఛేదించెను (39). ఆ రాక్షసరాజు వందలాది దివ్యాస్త్రములను ప్రయోగించెను ప్రతాప శాలియగు వీరభద్రుడు వాటిని తన బాణములతో ఛేదించి వానిని కొట్టెను (40). అపుడు ప్రతాపవంతుడగు శంఖచూడుడు మిక్కిలి కోపించి ఆతనిని శక్తితో వక్షస్థ్సలము నందు కొట్టెను. ఆతడు ఆ దెబ్బకు చలించినేలపై బడెను (41). గణాధ్యక్షులలో అగ్రసరుడగు వీరభద్రుడు క్షణములో తెలివిని దెచ్చు కొని లేచి నిలబడి మరల ధనస్సును చేతబట్టెను (42).
ఇంతలో కాళి స్కందుని కోర్కెపై, దానవులను భక్షించి తన వారిని రక్షించుట కొరకై మరల యుద్ధరంగమునకు వెళ్లెను (43). నందీశ్వరుడు మొదలగు వీరులు, సర్వదేవతలు, గంధర్వులు, యక్షులు, రాక్షసులు, మరియు నాగులు ఆమె వెనుక నడిచిరి (44). వాద్యములను మ్రోగించువారు, మరియు ��ధువును అందించు వారు పెద్దసంఖ్యలో అనుసరించిరి. మరల రెండు పక్షములలోని వీరులందరు యుద్ధమునకు సన్నద్ధులైరి (45).

33. He hurled his spear refulgent like the sun at the chest of the lord of Dānavas. At the blow he fell unconscious.
34. That powerful Asura got rid of the affliction in a Muhūrta and regained consciousness. With a leonine vigour he got up and roared.
35. He bit Kārttikeya of great strength with his spear. Not making that spear, a gift of Brahmā, futile, Kārttikeya fell on the ground.
36. Taking him on her lap Kālī brought him near Śiva. By his divine sport and perfect wisdom Śiva enlivened him.
37. Śiva gave him infinite strength. As a result of that the valorous Kārttikeya stood up and felt inclined to go to the battlefield.
38. In the meantime the heroic Vīrabhadra of great strength fought with the powerful Śaṅkhacūḍa in the battle.
39. Whatever arrows were discharged by the Dānava in the battle were split playfully by Vīrabhadra by means of his own arrows.
40. The lord of Dānavas discharged hundreds of divine missiles. The valorous Vīrabhadra split all of them by means of his arrows.
41. The valorous Śaṅkhacñḍa became infuriated and hit him on the grounds.
42. Regaining consciouness in a trice the leader of the Gaṇas, Vīrabhadra caught hold of his bow again.
43. In the meantime Kālī went to the battle ground again at the request of Kārttikeya to devour the Dānavas and to protect her own people.
44. Nandīśvara and other heroes, the gods, Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas and serpents followed her.
45. Drum-bearers and wine-carriers[2] accompanied them in hundreds. Heroic warriors on either side were active again.

శంఖచూడుడు పర్వతములను, సర్పములను, కొండచిలువలను, మరియు వృక్షములను వర్షరూపములో కురిపించెను. భయంకరమగు ఆ వర్షమును నివారించుట సంభవము కాదు (22). ఆ వర్షముచే కొట్టబడిన శివపుత్రుడగు స్కందుడు దట్టమగు మంచుచే కప్పబడిన సూర్యుని వలె నుండెను (23). ఆతడు మయుడు నేర్పించిన వివిధరకముల మాయను ప్రదర్శించెను. ఓ మహర్షీ! దేవతలలో మరియు గణములలో ఒక్కరైననూ ఆ మాయను తెలియలేకపోయిరి (24). అదే సమయములో మహామాయావి, మహాబలశాలి యగు శంఖచూడుడు ఒక దివ్యమగు బాణముతో స్కందుని ధనస్సును విరుగ గొట్టెను (25). ఆతడు స్కందుని దివ్యరథమును విరుగగొట్టి, రథమును లాగు గుర్రములను సంహరించి దివ్యమగు అస్త్రముతో నెమలిని కూడ నిష్క్రియముగా చేసెను (26). ఆతడు సూర్యకాంతి కలిగిన ప్రాణములను తీసే శక్తితో స్కందుని వక్షఃస్థలముపై కొట్టగా, ఆతడు ఆ దెబ్బచే వెంటనే క్షణకాలము మూర్ఛిల్లెను (27). శత్రువీరులను సంహరించే స్కందుడు మరల తెలివిని పొంది, గొప్ప రత్నమును పొదిగి దృఢముగా నిర్మింపబడిన తన వాహనము నెక్కెను (28).
పార్వతీ సమేతుడైన శివుని ఘనకార్యాన్ని స్మరించుకుంటూ, ఆయుధాలు, క్షిపణులు తీసుకుని, ఆరుముఖాల దేవత భయంకరంగా పోరాడాడు.(29) తన దివ్య క్షిపణులతో, శివపుత్రుడు సర్పాలు, పర్వతాలు, చెట్లు మరియు రాళ్లను, అన్నిటినీ ఆవేశంతో చీల్చాడు. (30) అతను ఆకాశ క్షిపణి ద్వారా మంటలను నిరోధించాడు. అతను శంఖచూడు యొక్క రథాన్ని మరియు విల్లును సరదాగా చీల్చాడు. 22. The king of Dānavas showered mountains, serpents, pythons and trees so terrifyingly that it could not be withstood.
23. Oppressed by that shower Kārttikeya, the son of Śiva, looked like the sun enveloped by thick sheets of frost.
24. He exhibited many types of illusions in the manner indicated by Maya. O excellent sage, none of the gods or Gaṇas understood it.
25. At the same time, the powerful Śaṅkhacūḍa of great illusion split his bow with a divine arrow.
26. He split his divine chariot and the horses pulling it. With a divine missile he shattered the peacock too.
27. The Dānava hurled his spear as refulgent as the sun fatally on his chest whereat he fell unconscious by the force of the blow.
28. Regaining consciousness, Kārttikeya the destroyer of heroic enemies, mounted his vehicle of sturdy build, set with gems.
29. Remembering the feat of lord Śiva accompanied by Pārvatī, and taking up weapons and missiles, the sixfaced deity fought terrifically.
30. With his divine missiles, the son of Śiva split the serpents, mountains, trees and rocks, everything furiously.
31. He prevented a conflagration by the missile of cloud. He split the chariot and the bow of Śaṅkhacūḍa playfully.
32. He split his armour, coronet and the vehicles. He roared like a hero and shouted again and again.

ఆ యుద్ధములో వేలాది మొండెములు అనేక రకములుగా నాట్యమాడినవి. పిరికి వారికి భయమును గొల్పు పెద్ద కోలాహలము చెలరేగెను (10). మరల స్కందుడు పెద్దగా కోపించి బాణముల వర్షమును కురింపించి, క్షణకాలములో కోటి మంది రాక్షస వీరులను నేల గూల్చెను (11). స్కందుని బాణ పరంపరచే తెగిన దేహములు కలిగి మరణించగా మిగిలిన దానవులందరు అపుడు పారిపోయిరి (12). వృషపర్వుడు, విప్రచిత్తి, దండుడు మరయు వికంపనుడు అను వారందరు వరుసగా స్కందునితో యుద్ధమును చేసిరి. (13). మహామారి కూడ వెన్ను చూపకుండా యుద్ధమును చేసెను. స్కందుని శక్తి- ఆయుధముచే వారు తెగిన అవయవములు గలవారై అధికమగు పీడను పొందిరి (14).
ఓ మునీ! అపుడు మహామారి, స్కందుడు విజయమును పొందిరి. స్వర్గములో దుందుభులు మ్రోగెను. పూల వాన కురిసెను (15). మిక్కిలి భయంకరము, అద్భుతము, ప్రకృతి శక్తులను బోలి దానవులను వినాశమొనర్చునది అగు ఆ స్కందుని సమరమును గాంచి (16), మహామారిచే చేయబడిన వినాశకరమగు ఆ ఉపద్రవమును కూడ గాంచి, అపుడు శంఖచూడుడు మిక్కిలి కోపించి వెంటనే స్వయముగా యుద్ధమునకు సన్నద్ధుడై (17), అనేక శస్త్రాస్త్రములతో గూడినది, దానవవీరులందరికీ అభయమునిచ్చునది, అనేక శ్రేష్ఠవస్తువులతో నిర్మితమైనది అగు శ్రేష్ఠవిమానమునెక్కి (18), మహావీరులతో గూడి యుద్ధరంగమునకు వెళ్లెను. ఆతడు ఆ విమానరూపమగు రథమధ్యములో నున్న వాడై ఆకర్ణాంతము నారిత్రాటిని లాగి బాణముల వర్షమును కురిపించెను (19). ఆతని ఆ బాణవర్షము భయంకరమైనది, నివారింపశక్యము కానిది. వధస్థానము వంటి ఆ యుద్ధభూమిలో మిక్కిలి భయంకరమగు చీకటి నెలకొనెను (20). దేవతలు, మరియు నందీశ్వరుడు మొదలగు ఇతరుల అందరు పరుగెత్తిరి. రణరంగములో స్కందుడు ఒక్కడు మాత్రమే నిలబడి యుండెను (21)

10. Many thousands of headless bodies danced in the battle field. There was a great tumult that terrified the cowards.
11. Again Kārttikeya became furiously angry and showered volleys of arrows. He struck crores of leaders of the Asuras within a trice.
12. The Dānavas wounded in their bodies by the numerous arrows of Kārttikeya fled in fright. Those who remained were killed.
13. Vṛṣaparvan, Vipracitti, Daṇḍa, and Vikampana fought with Kārttikeya by turns.
14. Mahāmāri also fought. She was never routed. All of them afflicted by Kārttikeya’s spear were wounded.
15. O sage, Mahāmārī and Skanda won the battle. Big wardrums were sounded in the heaven. Showers of flowers fell down.
16-17. On seeing the wonderfully terrible fight of Kārttikeya that caused wastage in the rank and file of the Dānavas like natural disasters, as well as the harassment and havoc wrought by Mahāmāri, Śaṅkhacūḍa became furious and himself got ready for the battle.
18-19. He got into his excellent aerial chariot that contained different weapons and missiles, that was set in diamond and that encouraged and emboldened the heroes. Śaṅkhacūḍa drew the string of the bow upto his ear and discharged volleys of arrows from his seat in the middle of the chariot. He was accompanied by many heroes.
20. His volley of arrows was terrifying. It could not be withstood. A terrible darkness spread in the battlefield.
21. The gods Nandīśvara and others fled. Only Kārttikeya stayed behind in the battle field.

సనత్కుమారుడిట్లు పలికెను- అపుడు దేవగణములన్నియు దానవులచే ఓడింపబడి శస్త్రాస్త్రములచే గాయపడిన దేహములు గలవారై భయభీతులై పారిపోయిరి (1). వారు విశ్వేశ్వరుడగు శంకరుని వద్దకు తిరిగి వచ్చి దుఃఖముతో నిండిన వాక్కుతో 'ఓ సర్వేశ్వరా! రక్షింపుము, రక్షింపుము'అని పలుకుతూ శరణుజొచ్చిరి (2). ఆ దేవాదుల పరాజయమును గాంచి భయపూరితములగు వారి మాటలను విని ఆ శంకరుడు గొప్ప క్రోధమును పొందెను (3). ఆయన దేవతలపై దయాదృష్టిని బరపి అభయమునిచ్చి తన తేజస్సుతో తన గణముల బలమును వర్ధిల్ల జేసెను (4). అపుడు మహావీరుడు, శివపుత్రుడు అగు స్కందుడు శివుని ఆజ్ఞను పొంది యుద్ధములో భయములేని వాడై దానవగణములతో పోరు సలిపెను (5). తారకాంతకుడగు ఆ స్కందుడు సింహనాదమును చేసి కోపించినవాడై యుద్ధములో వంద అక్షౌహిణీల సైన్యమును మట్టుబెట్టెను (6). పద్మములవంటి కన్నులు గల కాళి వారి శిరస్సులను దునిమి శీఘ్రమే రక్తమును త్రాగి మాంసమును భక్షించెను (7).
ఆమె అన్నివైపుల నుండి ఆ దానవుల రక్తమును త్రాగుచూ, దేవతలకు దానవులకు కూడ భయమును గొల్పు వివిధరకముల యుద్ధమును చేసెను (8). ఆమె కోటి శ్రేష్ఠమగు ఏనుగులను మరియు కోటి మంది మానవులను ఒకే చేతితో పట్టుకొని అవలీలగా నోటిలో పారవైచుకొనెను (9).

Sanatkumāra said:—
1. Then the gods were defeated by the Dānavas. Their bodies were wounded by weapons and missiles. Terrified, they took to flight.
2. Returning to Śiva, the lord of the universe, they sought refuge in him. In agitated words they cried “O Lord of all, save, O save us.”
3. On seeing the defeat of the gods and others and on hearing their cries of fear, Śiva was greatly infuriated.
4. He glanced at the gods sympathetically and assured them of his protection. With his brilliance he enhanced the strength of his Gaṇas.
5. Commanded by śiva, the great hero Kārttikeya, son of Śiva fought fearlessly with the hosts of Dānavas in the battle.
6. Shouting angrily and roaring like a hero, the lord, the slayer of Tāraka killed a hundred Akṣauhiṇīs[1] in the battle.
7. Clipping off their heads, Kālī with eyes like a red lotus, drank off the blood and devoured the flesh rapidly.
8. She fought in diverse ways terrifying both the gods and the Dānavas. She drank the blood of the Dānavas all round.
9. Seizing ten million elephants and an equal number of men with a single hand she playfully thrust them into her mouth.

ఆ యుద్ధములో గొప్ప బల పరాక్రమములు గల వీరులు మిక్కుటముగా గర్జిస్తూ అనేకరకముల శస్త్రాస్త్రములతో ద్వంద్వ యుద్ధములను చేయుచుండిరి (29). కొందరు బంగరు అగ్రములు గల బాణములతో యుద్ధమునందు భటులను సంహరించి వర్షాకాలమేఘముల వలె వీరగర్జనలను చేయుచుండిరి (30). ఒక వీరుడు మరియొక వీరుని, ఆతని రథము మరియు సారథితో సహా, వర్షాకాల మేఘము సూర్యుని వలె, అన్నివైపులనుండి బాణపరంపరలతో కప్పివేసెను (31).
ద్వంద్వయుద్ధవీరులు పరస్పరము దాడిచేసుకొనుచూ, ఆహ్వానిస్తూ, ముందుకు దుముకుతూ, ఒకరి నొకరు మర్మస్థానములయందు గాయపరుస్తూ యుద్ధమునుచేసిరి (32). ఆ మహాయుద్ధములో వీరుల గుంపులు తమ చేతులతో ధ్వజములను, ఆయుధములను ధరించి సింహనాదములను చేయుచూ అంతటా కానవచ్చిరి (33). ఆ యుద్ధమునందు మహావీరులు మహానందము గలవారై గొప్ప ధ్వనిని చేయు తమ శంఖములను వేర్వేరుగా మ్రోయించి బిగ్గరగా కేకలను వేయుచుండిరి (34). ఈ విధముగా దేవదానవుల మధ్య చాలకాలము గొప్ప భయంకరమైన బీభత్సకరమైన యుద్ధము జరిగి వీరులకు ఆనందమును కలిగించెను (35). పరమాత్మ, మహాప్రభుడు అగు శంకరుని ఈ లీలచే దేవ, దావన, మనుష్యులతో సహా సర్వప్రాణులు మోహింప చేయబడుచున్నవి (36).

29. With different kinds of miraculous and ordinary weapons and missiles, the heroes of great strength and valour fought one another shouting and leaping.
30. Some heroes killed the soldiers with their arrows fitted with goden tips and roared like water-laden rumbling clouds.
31. One hero fully encompassed another hero as well as his chariot and charioteer, by discharging heaps of arrows like the rainy season covering up the sun under the clouds.
32. Fighters of duel rushed against one another, challenging, thrusting and diving in at the vulnerable points.
33. Everywhere groups of heroes were seen in that terrible war roaring like lions with various weapons displayed in their hands.
34. The heroes in their joy shouted and leapt blowing on their conches of loud sound severally.
35. Thus for a long time the great combat between the gods and Dānavas continued, terrible and tumultuous but delightful to the heroes.
36. Such was the divine sport of the great lord Śiva, the great soul. Everyone including the gods, Asuras and human beings was deluded by it.
