“I don’t give my songs any instructions, when they are presented to the public. They are completely on their own and they...I really feel they can take care of themselves. Even when they’re uh, brutally violated such as Joan Baez did to the song, “Suzanne”—She violated it?—“Well, I wouldn’t consider it a violation but she didn’t want to sing “touched your perfect body with my mind.” At a certain point she had an idealogical position against mysticism. She thought that line was drug induced...and she sang “I touched your perfect body...with my thumb”....or something, I don’t know exactly—Something materially coherent. There was something she couldn’t except about being able to touch the material world with the mind. She had a great respect, has a great respect for the world as it is and she doesn’t want to present this mystical approach. And uh, I still love the song, as she sang it, you know, I couldn’t care less that she couldn’t except that line. I feel the same way about almost any song. Actually during The Rolling Thunder Revue when it came to Montreal I met her behind stage in The Forum, where the concerts were and she sang it according to my lyrics and she smiled at me, and said, “I finally got it right Leonard.” She had come around, her idealogical position had dissolved.”
