Joy of Life S2, ep 13 - 15 comments
Chen Pingping continues to be both using Fan Xian and a good mentor. He contains multitudes! Which is what makes him such a compelling character.
Second Prince is the least interesting he's ever been when he's in scenes with Ye Ling Er playing the victim. It's just too easy to manipulate her and so I can't care very much.
The way Fan Xian's mother is this powerful spectre that haunts the narrative... and it's not just her Seductive Beauty™ . It's in the way we more commonly see with a Great Man trope: a famed marital arts master, a dead legendary general or past king.... a father or grandfather figurehead. I both wish we knew about her but DON'T. She works best as a partial sketch; an unsolved poignant mystery.
Ep 14
Saintess!!!!!!!!!!!! reappears! After Fan Xian finally called her friend in ep 13 (朋友!). I don't believe you either, girl, that it's all about the treasury. You're bros!!!!!! He seduced a bromance out of you.
They basically gave 2P's new guard enough characterization for us to be interested in what happens to him. RIP your hopes & dreams my dude, it's been real
Guao Baokun and Loser Brother is a match made in heaven. I missed all the Beiqi people so much. Fan Xian playing 4D chess and getting them to babysit Guo Baokun. "Let's leave a good impression, he might come back." 😂 The way they have to escort those dumbasses to the border.
Fan Xian wants friends SO BAD it's literally tragic to me. He wants to make Censorate guy his friend because there's no one he can trust not to turn on him for benefits (other than the Fan family).
Ep 15
Chen Pingping & Fan Xian put on a ridiculous show. Very amusing but I feel like they should have been more convincing, if for no other reason than giving the emperor his due. 2nd Prince simply tried harder. Hate to say it about the enemy but facts are facts.
We already got a read on the emperor about Second Prince. A temporary grounding is all he can countenance (even that is a gift to Fan Xian and a warning to not exceed boundaries). To any extent he likes the faction wars and is happy to stir shit up & eat popcorn. But at least right now, he's gonna protect all his sons. In his own twisted way he cares about Crown Prince, Second Prince, and Fan Xian. Just not more than he cares about himself & power & control.
Censor Lai pushing the emperor too far "Are you saying everyone is confused but you?" It's honestly shocking he wasn't executed before this. Bro you just tired of living?
Crown Prince pinching his leg and having fake hysterics while his flunky joins in while 2P looks disgusted. This is why CP is my bestie. He's hilarious.
Fan Xian finally realizing what his brothers already know - that there are limits to the emperor's condescending forbearance. They can't become a potential threat to him and he can't feel they are out of his control. When FX is playing with His Majesty, all is permissible. But when he's not...
The burning indentures scene reminding me of Blossoms in Adversity, a drama I ended up enjoying more than I expected. (If only it was blessed with the quality of acting we see in every cast member of JOL.)

Joy of Life livelogging episode 5
This is my first watch, so don't tell me secrets ;)
I really like our protagonist, he's interesting. Assassin bro kneels to him with the quintessential, blah blah do this thing for me and my life and soul will be yours and ML says no. no. and also no!
ML just wants truths.
Assassin bro's story is super sad and so effective in that way that cdramas can do - people being crushed by systems, ordinary people being selfish in a human way without being evil, the inability to obtain justice for all the wrongs u suffer, that resentment that nestles in the heart
So his family is missing & he can only trust ML... which pays off because ML wants to help him because of his lingering decency. He doesn't want a wuxia slave, he wants to do the decent thing, because that's the type of person he wants to be.
the great cdramas and danmei write "good isn't weak" characters in just the way I like. not sanctimonious, pretentious, and hypocritical, just very centered & fiercely determined.
🍗 drumstick girl keeps coughing blood, if this was western tv I'd presume she'd be dead within weeks

This is my first watch, so don't tell me secrets ;)
A lot of sweet romance stuff. These two do have a very warm chemistry together. It already feels like they've known each other awhile. As the viewer you do believe that they like each other very much.
Now that the idiotic forced misunderstanding is over, I can relax my blood feud. Go forth, my children, and be logical!
ML owes his family SO MANY APOLOGIES for the bullshit he put them thru about this idiocy. It bet it's not over, but at least everyone knows who everyone is now

Joy of Life S2 E16 comments
The Second Prince and Ye Ling Er subplot is gonna become my new sworn enemy and source of futile rage, like the first 10 episodes of Fan Xian and Wan'er.
I guess it's only fair that this season gives me something to loathe, as nothing can be perfect.
But what was absolutely perfect: FX picking public fights with generals & dukes to signal that he isn't developing a span of control past Overwatch Council and His Majesty.
Chen Pingping and the emperor alone time is always good theatre.
Fan Xian hiding in the palace and hanging with his aunt & idiot prince was also incredible. FX does great with dumbass nobles so I hope we see more of that pair.
The Spring Imperial Examination is an obvious trap.
I am really wondering if this drama is gonna end with FX and his family traveling to live away from the capital. Feels like they've foreshadowed this multiple times now.
Lone Shijia town survivor has no idea that multiple powerful people have a reason to want him dead. (Including me! Since I unofficially officially boarded CP's ship last season) That's...probably not gonna work out for him.

This is my first watch, so don't tell me secrets ;)
The "I'll kill someone" favor conversation is fantastic.
I'll probably offend more than one person by saying this, but the snappy dialogue in ep 2-7 so far feels quite reminiscent of Aaron Sorkin at his height, when West Wing and Sports Night were really humming, plus his script for The Social Network.

Aw even Second Madam has come around! She's realized that her loser son just needed a big brother who can look out for him
I realize I'm saying aww a lot but the fam stuff is quite good. (I realized this about me with Blossoms in Adversity - I can be very won over by crap family members forming a sort of found/chosen family. When they didn't ever intend to care about each other & stick together, even if they were related, but events in the story make them realize they LIKE each other and WANT to be family.)

The emperor's spy network has that city on LOCKDOWN. He knows when you BREATHE WRONG. (This is what the intelligence agency in the Luoyang drama was supposed to be, no wonder aunt empress was so pissed off. She was robbed.)

watching for the 1st time, so don't tell me secrets ;)
Fan Xian seems really sure he's the emperor's son. Hmmmm Do I feel confident the emperor likes him, as much as a selfish schemer of his kind can like anyone? Sure. Do I feel confident at this point that the emperor thinks FX is his illegitimate kid? IDK because this could be another cover and he was actually helping her hide something. I'm just not at the place yet where I am taking that as an irrefutable fact.
The look on FX's face when Xiao En says as long as he knows he's a Xiao. Good acting! You can see the compassion FX has for him. He's not only ruthless and vicious.
"Don't bury me. I don't want to be underground anymore." 😢😔
"I am sorry I am not your grandson. Sit tight. You won't be bothered anymore." All of his dialogue in this scene is simple but full of sincere feeling. FX is not as wholly dark as he thinks he is. What a fantastic, complex character. I really like him.
That secret was indeed underwhelming for me but Xiao En had a fantastic arc.
Chen Pingping always has like 5 reasons for anything he does. Love that about him.
LMAO Chen Pingping even set up things so evil Princess' plot ended up giving FX a chivalrous bestie. (He reminds me a lot of Korn, the mafia kingpin from Kinnporsche. Can't predict everything but makes great bets based on all the variables he can control and his understanding of people's hearts. Willing to risk it all for the reward.)
Hi Gao Baokun! Ohhhhhhhh now FX is on the trail of Chen Pingping's 5th Reason. Teng Zijing was set up to be in that village! Hand selected to be positioned into FX's life. Just a pawn.
Gao Baokun is just a random loser who got dragged into the mud (but wait--we already knew he didn't try to kill Teng Xijing's fam in the end, and that part was the Bureau? Or at least I thought we knew that.)
It's touching that after all FX still trusts Teng Zijing. His one true friend! ❤
ahhhhhhhh Fan Xian is super pissed at his uncles. Guys you may have miscalculated this. Like my beloved Korn from Kinnporsche, Chen Pingping & Emperor want it all and are betting big that they can have their power AND their chosen people. Or at least the Emperor really wants both. Korn won the day in that drama (tho fandom keeps punishing him in fanfic). We'll see if FX can eventually forgive.
His Majesty is actually calling it out that they say to each other & perhaps even to themselves that they see Fan Xian as their baby boy and yet.... I like the emperor for his self awareness and inner conflict about his hypocrisy
Does Fan Jian truly think of FX wholeheartedly as his foster son? Are Chen Pingping and His Majesty actually having real trust issues..? Remains to be seen.
We're back with Yan Bingyuan and FX admitting this was a test for him.
Who's Xiao En's real grandson? Yan Bingyuan? ....... LMAO that took the drama like 3 min to answer. Yep it's probably him.

I believe the emperor sees what I do: that a fealty to Qing & determination to make it the most powerful does not necessarily = fealty to the current emperor. Saying Chen Pingping is dedicated to the best for the country does NOT read like perfect loyalty to His Majesty. It's not that he's against the emperor or FX and doesn't gaf, it's just that his obsession for the bigger goal is what it is. A common fear that cdrama royalty has to grapple with. They both hunger for personal loyalty & can't trust it.
oh is it Shen sister? She's way more fun than her erstwhile boyfriend, let her in!

Let's meet Noble Consort Yi! Her son is Third Prince
ML feeling a lil empathy for the consort and crown prince in their prisons (which doesn't mean he's foolish enough to trust them)
next we meet Consort Shu (I actually got the "shu" joke, very proud of myself lol) Mother of the Second Prince! She cracks me up. ('Your son likes me!' '..Sounds fake but ok.')
Lady Ning's son, who isn't in succession, is out fighting at the border. Not sure he's truly accepted his fate.

I feel like the Crown Prince is both helped & hurt by the Royal Princess as his main supporter. She's become so narrowly focused on eliminating Fan Xian and it's blinding her to the variety of paths before them. CP is RIGHT that Fan Xian hasn't picked a side. (Though we are teetering on a Forbidden Bromance.) I'm feeling like maybe CP wouldn't even be determined to making an enemy of this new player if his aunt wasn't forcing the issue constantly. He wasn't going to interfere at ALL in the trial until she made a big deal about it... and then blames him when that goes wrong? It's honestly not doing him any favors to be making all this noise.
I'm on strike and refuse to acknowledge that the forced romantic misunderstanding is happening.
