More snippets from The Phantom Of The Opera as royalty shuggy au...
The days in the castle grew longer and the contract bound the jester to the king's presence. Every time Buggy snuck out or requested to go into town, the king would get jealous beyond what Buggy could tolerate. He found someone on the outside who could help him escape on occasion. Yet he still felt guilt rusting his insides every time. It didn't help that even on the occasion the king would catch him sneaking out, he'd forgive him as soon as he entered his threshold.
<<
Then Shanks turned round, for he believed me, and I also had faith in myself. He fell at my feet, with words of love... with words of love in his dead mouth... and the music had ceased... He kissed the hem of my dress and did not see that I closed my eyes.
"What more can I tell you, dear? You now know the tragedy. It went on for a fortnight—a fortnight during which I lied to him. My lies were as ghastly as the monarch who inspired them; but they were the price of my liberty. I burned his mask; and I managed so well that, even when he was not speaking, he tried to catch my eye, like a dog sitting by its master. He was my faithful slave and paid me endless little attentions. Gradually, I gave him such confidence that he ventured to take me walking on the banks of the lake and to row me in the boat on its leaden waters; toward the end of my captivity he let me out through the gates that closed the underground passages in the Rue Scribe. Here a carriage awaited us and took us to the Bois. The night when we met you was nearly fatal to me, for he is terribly jealous of you and I had to tell him that you were soon going away ... Then, at last, after a fortnight of that horrible captivity, during which I was filled with pity, enthusiasm, despair and horror by turns, he believed me when I said, 'I WILL COME BACK!'"
"And you went back, Buggy," groaned the other.
"Yes, dear, and I must tell you that it was not his frightful threats when setting me free that helped me to keep my word, but the harrowing sob which he gave on the threshold of the tomb. ... That sob attached me to the unfortunate man more than I myself suspected when saying good-by to him. Poor Shanks! Poor Shabks!"
>> {Chapter 12: Apollo's Lyre}
Buggy had denied the king's request to take his hand in marriage several times by now. First, it was the status, but when Shanks offered to step down from the thrown, the jester insisted that he was still too recognizable. He wanted nothing but to be able to walk the streets without having people gawk at him and whisper and stare. Then there was the issue of attitude. Buggy was no full, a king who had never lacked a thing in his life would never settle to be penniless in a barn. Not to mention that no one in their right mind would be able to endure him.
<<
" . . .
I can't go on living like this, like a mole in a burrow! Don Juan Triumphant is finished; and now I want to live like everybody else. I want to have a spouse like everybody else and to take him out on Sundays. I have invented a mask that makes me look like anybody. People will not even turn round in the streets. You will be the happiest of men. And we will dance, all by ourselves, till we swoon away with delight. You are crying! You are afraid of me! And yet I am not really wicked. Love me and you shall see! All I wanted was to be loved for myself. If you loved me I should be as gentle as a lamb; and you could do anything with me that you pleased."
Soon the moans that accompanied this sort of love's litany increased and increased.
>> {Chapter 22: In the Torture Chamber. The Persian's Narrative Continued}
(this one's a bit iffy)
<<
Three times over, Buggy fiercely bewailed his fate:
"You don't love me! You don't love me! You don't love me!"
And then, more gently:
"Why do you cry? You know it gives me pain to see you cry!"
A silence.

the mental image of a woman walking into a store and asking for the most depressing books to read is pretty amusing in a way :)
but would you mind sharing some of those books?
Yeah it was kinda sad, we were chatting while I was wandering around the store trying to see if we had any of my suggestions (we didn't really) and from what I could tell she was dealing with some crazy stuff and super depressed and just wanted to like Feel Something Deeply. Anyway. I can't remember exactly what I suggested to her but here are some sad/emotionally intense books: -Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart -No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai -House Of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski (checks the "emotionally intense" box but not necessarily sad) -Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (I'm biased, I've read it 3 times) -Orpheus Descending by Tennessee Williams -HERmione by HD (I found this book really sad but it might not be the same for others. Yes, it is spelled like that.) -Nightwood by Djuna Barnes -Sometimes A Great Notion by Ken Kesey (not sad, but at least for me it was very intense because of how human every single character was and how you get to see every angle of the conflict so you understand how much miscommunication there truly is. It's also one of my favorite novels.) -The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks -Acid Snow by Larry Mitchell (I think this one might be out of print; I bought it for 50 cents at a library sale in SLC on a road trip like 13 years ago. It's a novel that takes place during the AIDS epidemic and it's just tinged with grief and paranoia, it's very good.)
Oh and I haven’t read it yet but apparently A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara is incredibly sad.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Rendition Was In - posthumous collection of covers, some previously released,  some not
Often, in an effort to save the expense of licensing an original master from a major label, a music supervisor may request a song be re-created as closely as possible. Such was the case when a well-known bank asked the band to cut Stevie Wonder’s classic, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” for a TV commercial, or when Hank Shockley asked for a perfect replay of Bad Medicine’s funky instrumental, “Trespasser” for the American Gangster soundtrack. Both “Rescue Me” and “In the Bush” were among the outtakes on the cutting room floor of The Wolf of Wall Street motion picture soundtrack, for which the band recorded several unused sides. “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” was not just a remake of the Kenny Rogers’ First Edition hit, but more specifically a near re-play of Bettye Lavette’s 1968 version, and was notably the very first recording done at the Daptone House of Soul studio in 2002. Likewise, the band’s replay of Gladys Knight’s “Giving Up” was specifically requested but unused by a producer who was confident he needed it to sample for a beat on a Dr. Dre album. “Little by Little,” “Inspiration Information,” “Here I Am Baby,” and “Take Me with U” were cut for tribute projects to Dusty Springfield, Shuggie Otis, The Marvelettes, and Prince, respectively. The latter of which is a perfect example of the way the band was able to take a familiar tune and completely flip it on it’s head. Of course, there were also many non-contracted covers over the years that the band cut of their own volition, starting with the complete re-invention of Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done for Me Lately” on the their 2001 debut LP, Dap-Dippin’ with..., which convinced more than a few fans that Sharon’s version was in fact the original after a counterfeit news article surfaced claiming that Jones was suing Jackson for copyright infringement. Sharon’s heart-wrenching take on Bob Marley’s early Wailers ballad “It Hurts to be Alone” is a tender nod to the soul that Jamaica borrowed from the States in the early sixties. Though the band has mostly built their career on a prolific catalog of originals, these forays into other artists’ compositions lay bare their gift for arrangement and the unmatched studio prowess that earned them their reputation as The Baddest Band in the Land.

Daptone Records is releasing an album of cover songs from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings called Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Rendition Was In). The collection will have five never-heard-before covers and fan favorites previously released in different formats. Their version of Stevie Wonder's "Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours" is the lead single which was originally commissioned by a bank for a TV commercial.
"Rescue Me" and "In The Bush" were outtakes from The Wolf Of Wall Street soundtrack. “Little by Little,” “Inspiration Information,” “Here I Am Baby,” and “Take Me with U” were intended for tribute projects to Dusty Springfield, Shuggie Otis, The Marvelettes, and Prince. The band's cover of Gladys Knight's "Giving Up" was requested by a producer who had plans to sample the beat for a Dr. Dre album. “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” took inspiration from both the Kenny Rogers and Bettye Lavette versions. Legendary Public Enemy producer Hank Shocklee requested their reworking of Bad Medicine's "Trespasser" for the American Gangster soundtrack.
Through the years the group recorded some covers simply because they wanted to including Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and Bob Marley's "It Hurts To Be Alone." The Jackson song appeared on their 2001 debut album Dap-Dippin' With Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. The Marley cover is from the 2009 Waxploitation Presents Causes 2 compilation.
Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Rendition Was In) is the group's second posthumous release following Soul Of A Woman from 2017. Jones passed in 2016 from pancreatic cancer. The new album comes out on October 23rd.

Heavy Rotation: Spring 2017
Hey guys! Here's what I listened to a lot this Spring. As always, songs on these playlists may be explicit. The link: https://open.spotify.com/user/121147540/playlist/5KfODFKAGh2TJV4EiMdf1U
Notes:
I heard "Slow Rider" live when Mountain Stage came to Peoples Bank Theatre here in Marietta. It was my favorite tune of the night. Bridget Kearney (member of Lake Street Dive and Joy Kills Sorrow) and Benjamin Lazar Davis pulled in some African influences, including a special African guitar and a great mid-song meter-perception shift.
Some of my favorite artist discoveries this Spring were Lawrence, Sarah Jarosz (who will be touring with Punch Brothers, another favorite), Sampha, and Shuggie Otis.
I love knowing what people are listening to, so please feel free to share a playlist of your current faves in the comments!
Also, if you want to join in, I'm doing the #30daymusicchallenge on Twitter. Follow me there @jesskbaldwin

Using Names in Song Lyrics
Using someone’s name in lyrics you write can be powerful. And I probably don’t need to tell you that there approximate 8 million names of females who men have written about. There are female artists who write about names as well, but ironically, they are mostly woman as well. Joline by Dolly Parton, for example is about her begging another romantic rival to leave her relationship alone with her “man”. There are quite a few songs with male names in them, but by far more famous songs with female names.
This can be tricky. Because lyrics with names can get cheesy. The cheese factor is big. It needs to be written correctly and musically composed correctly. Here are some things to think about when writing lyrics with names in them.
When using a name in song lyrics sometimes it takes relatability out of the song for the listener. Except of course whose name is the same name in the lyrics. Think about it, I bet you can think of a song, a famous song, that sings your name. Because you think it could relate to you…even if it doesn’t at all. If it does it makes an even greater impact.
Using name in lyrics can be very loving and romantic. It shows the person you care enough about them and thinking enough about them to put their name in to a piece of artwork. That’s pretty cool.
Names in lyrics are fun and can have a great impact for the person you are writing it for. If the lyrics and song are good enough, they can have a very wide appeal – as you can see from this ridiculously long list of names from the website flashback.com:
1. Eleanor Rigby – The Beatles
