doing violence unto zam becomes the only way vitalasy can fulfill his desire for zam. violence is not the underlying true nature of vitalasy's desire, it's a sublimation and a compromise he makes at the cost of some element of his selfhood. it paradoxicallly hurts zam less To hurt him than to try not to; where does that leave someone who is trying very hard to please him. even if he instead does really try to hurt zam, it pleases him! how confusing! how frustrating! there is no winning. this is how it works, in my beautiful mind.
