Lipgloss Talks Movies • 11 August 2023
Todays movie is: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978) (Trailer)
Fun fact: this is where Aerosmith’s cover of Come Together originates from 😉 here’s the full album!! 😌 it’s so good 💜
It’s a musical! 🫣 filled with nothing but Beatles covers and George Burns narrating—he’s the only one who actually talks!
But it tells the whole story through songs which is amazing to me 🤭 and the covers are all top notch 🤩 they literally got who’s who in this movie at the time or so it seems lol.
It’s definitely not for everyone and it’s not like the best cinema out there but it’s cute and fun and I love the music.
Plus there’s Steve Martin (pre Little Shop of Horror so no surprise the Dentist role suited him 🤭)
And Alice Cooper being his usual weird self but his cover of Because is my all time favorite cause of the ‘sweetie’ line 🤣 it’s so condescending I love it
Anyways, this one is a rent or buy sadly as it’s not available on streaming from what I could tell.

Various Artists - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (RSO, Soundtrack, 1978) - Design by Tom Gross, Tim Bryant, Susan Herr and Tom Nikosey
Not to be confused with the Beatles' masterpiece, this soundtrack and the movie is anything but.
Enjoy this logo. It's the only good thing about this pile of dogshit ("Got To Get You Into My Life" is pretty good though; I'll give them that).

Originally, The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton were given dialogue in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1978). However, since Frampton had a British accent and The Bee Gees were Australian, their accents were not in line with a movie taking place in middle America, it was decided that they would do away with all dialogue, and use George Burns' role as narrator to supply the dialogue for all the characters.
Frampton wanted to get on the trampoline during "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite." It wasn't allowed because he wasn't insured.
During the filming of Strawberry Fields' funeral, Frampton forced himself to cry by thinking of the then-recent Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash that claimed the lives of several friends and associates.
The shooting script called for Frampton's character to kill Steven Tyler's. When it came time to film this scene, Aerosmith threatened to walk out. "There's no f*cking way that Steven is gonna get directly offed by Frampton," commented Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. "It's gotta be an accident, the way it was in the original script we f*cking agreed to." They finally agreed to a compromise, with Sandy Farina's character Strawberry Fields accidentally pushing Tyler's character to his death. (IMDb)
Happy Birthday, Peter Frampton!

Hi! I am so glad you "enjoyed" The Apple! I have another weird late 70s/early 80s musical movie with baffling and regressive politics- 1978's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! A Beatles tribute movie made without the Beatles (and long after they broke up) that is a jukebox opera of the Sgt. Pepper album (and also Abbey Road). It stars The Bee Gees (and Peter Frampton of Frampton Comes Alive) as our Beatles standin band, Aerosmith as the main villains, and Steve Martin and Alice Cooper as miniboss villains, Earth Wind and Fire for one song, and all narrated by George Burns. It is a very strange but fun (bad) movie! Also it was produced by the guys who made Grease
that sounds like a perfect storm (positive). i'll have to give it a watch!

The Twenty-First Night of September
Do you remember?
youtube
So, fun fact: "September" was the second single off Earth Wind & Fire's 1978 compilation album, The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1. Wait, why are they releasing a single off a collection of their old songs?
The first single was "Got to Get You into My Life," which they recorded for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie, as previously mentioned. The movie was released a few months before, so it made sense to put the single here for people who were more into EW&F than the Bee Gees.
But "September" was just a new song they felt like including, and when you're Earth Wind & Fire, you can just do stuff like put a new song on your greatest hits album and have it become your greatest hit ever[1]. That's confidence.
The date has no special meaning. It just sounded good.
[1] Greatest hit by sales, that is, since the single went 6x platinum in the US, by far their best-selling. But by chart performance, it hit #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, lower than several of their other records.

I just remembered that when I was in high school, I somehow got my hands on a novelization of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a movie from 1978 with no dialogue, just intermittent narration stringing together Beatles songs, as sung by the Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, and others into a semi-coherent story. What was even in that book? I could not tell you now.
